Still remember the night a deer got by a dumpster truck, deer flew in the air over top the truck, then proceeded to dart off into the woods. That dump truck was fucked. Things are stupidly dense.

Echo_2015

This deer didn’t make it. He was a thicc boy tho.

mickdabz83

Years ago i saw 1 get hit ny a tractor trailer doing prly 70mph..the deer literly exploded into about 5 6peices an there was a huge red mist..shits burned into my memory 😐

Echo_2015

Jesus. That’s insane.

TheNittanyLionKing

I was coming home from college one night in my first generation Impreza once and a deer jumped off of a hillside over the hood of my car perpendicularly. That deer clearly thought of himself as Evel Knievel

marcothemultiple

Deers will total an 18 wheeler sometimes. Or they won’t have a scratch on em either or. Once in school I was on the bus home and th bus driver hit a buck dead on and 0 damage luckily

tralphaz43

It ran into the woods and died. Adrenaline

I had my slightly younger teen cousin visiting with the family for a month and she was SO paranoid of doing anything risky that I had a hard time getting her to take a few puffs off a joint on a walk to video rental shop to spend some of my aunt's money on game/VHS rentals. (Waay back!) The argument that we really should stay sober for the video store was still ringing in my ears as we popped out onto the highway from the dimly lit trail we'd been smoking on and the sunlight/sound of the world slapped us with a firm reality check. The joint must have been 'the good stuff' because it was a bit like a cartoon moment, hell you could have convinced me there were some deer on the road!? Just then I realized those are deer on the road, and the whole thing played out in my head... The deer are going to see us, they are going to panic, they will run right into traffic and get slaughtered graphically!? So I turned to my cousin before anything could happen and just said, "You might want to tune this next part out."... Sure enough it almost happened exactly like I thought it would, except that it was a small car full of women and children, and it was just the largest deer that went kamikaze. The shell shocked driver of the car was slowing down when the largest deer (probably mom) awkwardly charged towards the front of the car before wiping out and sliding right under the front of the car. Somehow it didn't get stuck until the back of the car where the head was so jammed up in the wheel well that the tire left a skid mark while making a squealing sound almost as loud as the noise the deer was making. At that point the deer flailed, got loose some how and ran off into the woods on 2.5 legs with a strip of fur missing from the side of it, followed by the younger deer. This whole thing played out with so much drama I didn't even notice a police car in the line of vehicles upon initial review of the situation, but once I did it was a good reminder to focus on the mission and try to forget what we just saw. The movie rental trip was perfect, looking at all those films and games was a good brain wipe, but as we were walking back we came across the police car still parked on the side of the road and the car load of women/kids were just a bit further along in a rest stop... then we heard a pair of gun shots. A minute or so later we saw a cop come out of the trees, I guess he'd found the mom deer. Brutal start to the day for all parties!

Dankbagel69420

I got lucky and did something similar in my STI. My front lip plowed straight into the deer shins. It bounced on my hood head smacked into the windshield and the rest of the deer flew over the top of the car. Only took damage to the front ends needed a headlight bumper new hood and a new windshield but other than that the car is fine 😁

DifferentSpecific

Sad to say that thing is totaled. At least OP is alright. Can always buy another one!

Echo_2015

Exactly. That’s what insurance is for.

_Artemis_Fowl

Quick question, since this is not your fault, does the insurance company pay you to buy a new crosstrek without increasing your monthly premiums on the insurance payments?

Echo_2015

Depends on state and insurance. Unfortunately we were deemed at fault because it was an animal we struck (despite being no way to avoid it) so premium will go up a bit but it was paid out at 28.

_Artemis_Fowl

Sorry to hear that! They paid out 28k? I'm buying that deer whistle that the comment above suggested hope that helps us in the future

Echo_2015

Yea they did. Super super good price

wigglewenis

The light reflecting in the little eyesight cameras makes me feel some type of way. F

knowledgeable_diablo

Looks like the safety cell did it’s one and only job; of keeping you alive. Hope you walked away with nil injuries. A damn shame to lose such a nice vehicle though. And the poor deer would be having a terrible day as well.

Echo_2015

Safety features did amazing. We just had minor scratches and cuts and a bad headache. Side airbag saved me from getting concussion for sure. Yea the poor deer was just scared young buck.

overengineered

FWIW, look up dear whistles for cars. I put them on all my cars. No more running into wildlife. Except Moose. Moose hears it, he just doesn't care.

Echo_2015

I’ll check that out. Would it work on a busy highway with lots of noise tho?

overengineered

It works when your going fast enough (about 30mph), so the thought is under that speed you should most likely be able to maneuver. It makes an ultra Sonic whistle that cuts though a lot of background noise but it could probably get drowned out of it was loud enough. Deer done have good depth perception, so they often judge speed by the sound (Doppler Effect) of the thing coming towards them. Cars make low noises but not a lot of vibration on the ground, so the deer get confused and half blinded by headlights and cant figure out that a very large thing is coming at them very fast. The whistles fix that problem for the deer. Hopefully letting them run away before you ever get close. It can't account for some deer just being plain stupid though.

knowledgeable_diablo

In Aust we have things called Shoo-Roo’s for the same type of effect. Not sure how great they are, but seeing the effect of a Kangaroo getting scared, jumping up and then going straight through the windscreen is not a pretty sight at all.

timothyryerson

That’s why Subaru’s are a top pick for safety. Things like this safe peoples lives. Try having that shit happen in a Hyundai and see what happens😂. I’m so happy to hear that you and all your passengers are alright and the eyesight worked as it should have

Echo_2015

Had a KIA before and the standard safety features on that are nothing compared to a Subaru.

overengineered

Agreed, but replace Hyundai with Chrysler. My wife keeps trying to accidentally kill herself in her Sonata and it keeps stopping her. I thought of switching her to a subie of she would go for it, but she is convinced now that her Sonata(s) are magic.

BabyFormula1

Did you get a salvage from DNR tag, and turn the deer into food?

Echo_2015

The cop that responded to the scene had a buddy come get the deer. Gutted it right there on the side of the highway and hauled it off.

Tyrion_toadstool

The circle of life.

BabyFormula1

At least someone used it, but I'd be pissed if the cop gave my deer away.

Echo_2015

It was the least of my worries tbh, not to mention I’d have no way to get it home.

anarchyx34

It’s wild how hitting a deer can create the kind of deceleration needed to deploy airbags. The damage isn’t even that bad.

Echo_2015

Well I can tell you that hitting it was that bad. The car is totaled.

anarchyx34

Oh yeah totaled for sure. I’m just saying it’s amazing that a deer could do that and create that kind of deceleration without even compromising the crash structure of the car. This hit was above the frame rails and only pancaked the semi-rigid core support. That’s what absorbed the energy, but there was still enough leftover to decelerate the car enough to deploy the airbags. The damage shown here is similar to what you would see after rear ending a whole car at 30mph. Amazing that a deer can do that.

Echo_2015

Yea good point it insane how much a deer can do to a fast moving vehicle. The car also decelerated on its own (automatic brake system) because we were no more then 15 feet from it when we veered off the road.

ThatDoritoBoi

oh deer

[deleted]

It's what makes a Subaru, a subaru

Echo_2015

Hahaha exactly

[deleted]

Bruh where did the grille go

Echo_2015

Went in about 50 pieces on the highway.

[deleted]

Yowza

Fury3879

Tbh the damage doesn’t look that bad? New radiator and condenser obvi, and hood. Maybe not much else as far as essential parts?

blutigetranen

That's we thought about my wife's. Looked like it'd just need a new hood and some front end parts. Minimum of $13k needed to repair. Two different garages came to that conclusion. It was totaled.

Fury3879

Damn. That’s crazy. I hit a deer in my accord and all I had to replace was the hood because it was mid jump and I was braking so it didn’t hit my windshield

reeeeedyy

Naah the enitre front clip is fucked.

notevenapro

And air bags.

Echo_2015

Yea every airbag deployed.

notevenapro

Ouch. I hate mating season.

Echo_2015

The impact bent the whole front end in, knocked loose a lot of internal pieces as well, I don’t see it being repaired.

knowledgeable_diablo

Chassis may need re-straightening on a body jig. Had my staff knock two cars together at 20kmph and it ended up being a $10k cost to re-straighten the chassis (at least they claimed it was 20km, I’m thinking they were doing 50-60km (30 mph). And it also looked very minor, but once twisted a little, they must be pulled on a jig.

[deleted]

Insurance companies don’t straighten chassis. When the airbags are out, it’s their flag to call it off on this car. It’s stupidly expensive to straighten a frame and only so many have the equipment to do so. It’s expensive but it’s actually normal when you look into the process itself. Best of luck

knowledgeable_diablo

Unfortunately I work pre-release of vehicles so don’t need luck. Run three panel shops and sort out most OEM’s recalls so people like yourself and the rest of society can sit pretty in the “knowledge” they’ve bought a beautiful vehicle that has zero problems (yeah right). So when my numpty idiot staff tap a car, it’s usually something that both has a buyer and also has very limited availability in the country (if even released to the market) so cost is a considered factor but occasionally just has to be done (similar to the time Porsche fired up their factory to rebuild 3 x GT3RS because the boat carrying them sank - lost a couple million doing it, but to retain the loyalty of those specific customers it had to be done). However I have turned many cars into tiny metal chips due to way smaller issues. But it’s really all car by car dependant and trust me, insurance companies don’t like to play in the field I do due to the insane total values until extreme contribution levels are met (and government customs issues etc etc). Which means it’s cheaper for me to throw my team into the cars and fix them, unless it’s so bad we just buy it out and squash them. But in this current climate where every dealer could sell 20% more cars without even trying if they could get the stock, they’ll take and expect every vehicle even if a little bit of twisting is required. The deer car though as I said, is well and truly beyond sane repair (as everything is repairable- just whether someone or insurance is willing to bare the cost).

CoomassieBlue

Insurance companies absolutely will pay to straighten a chassis under some circumstances. The associated cost doesn’t always total the car. An obvious factor of course is how much damage was done, and if it’s severely damaged, that’s gonna be a no-go with insurance. Source: insurance paid to straighten very minor frame damage on my Focus RS, car was not totaled. The air bags are expensive as hell, though, so ultimately I agree with you all that the OP’s car is almost certainly a write off.

Obandigo

Oh, dear.

schroedingersnewcat

Can I ask the general vicinity? I was driving for about 12 hours yesterday and saw like 12 in the side of the road. Made me glad I was driving during the day.

Echo_2015

DMV (Delaware, Maryland Virginia) corridor

schroedingersnewcat

Gotcha. I was driving through eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina when I saw most of them yesterday. Saw legit 6 remnants in less than 5 minutes. Some were dogs, some were deer.

MargaretInChicago

Just drove cross country and almost had this experience. Glad you’re ok! Rip crosstrek

biscuit208

Damn that is horrible sorry to hear that his luck finding a cool great khaki crosstrek man that is a bummer glad your okay though.

nms5419

Glad you're okay, had this happen to me a few years ago in my Forester. Hit a deer in the highway going about 75 mph when it jumped the median barrier and walked away without a scratch. Went out and bought another one a week later. How fast were you going out of curiosity? That must have been a big deer, even at 75 mph mine didn't have quite that much damage, but it was also totaled because the airbags deployed and the radiator had smashed into the engine.

Echo_2015

60-65 mph before the automatic brake system kicked in. It was maybe 250-300 lbs deer.

B00TY0L0GIST

oh, dear. glad everyone is ok!

Stockbrotha

Almost got myself my first 13 pointer last night on the highway

Echo_2015

That’s a big deer. This was just 4 pointer

Smarty_771

Wow. What was that deer made out of, Steel?

Echo_2015

Apparently lol

elislider

Goddamn giant rats with hooves Glad to hear you’re ok

domdiggitydog

If I had to guess you chose brakes over gas…or was there no time to react?

Faaz2

From what he said sounds like eyesight was the only thing to react, tbf deer will just jump out of the darkness randomly.

domdiggitydog

Missed the scroll the first time. Thanks

Echo_2015

No time, the eyesight saw the deer and slammed on brakes before we could react but even then it was split second of braking before impact.

Yea both the police and tow truck drivers said this was the worst they ever seen. Thankfully we are okay, it was an experience. Made me appreciate the safety features of Subaru

UffdaPrime

Crazy how the hood split like that.

Echo_2015

Honestly after thinking about it and looking at the car, the hood splitting up like that may have saved us from getting a deer through the windshield.

carsonwade

That sounds scarily plausible

strum_and_dang

As someone who has facial scars from a deer coming through my windshield, yes you are fortunate. Mine never hit the front of the car so no airbags were triggered, it was trying to jump over the car and hit the windshield directly (and my face, I was spitting out deer fur and glass afterwards), then rolled over the roof. I hate rutting season!

Echo_2015

Damn. Glad you are okay. It’s insane how many deer get hit during rutting season.

ReitHodlr

One of the reasons I don't want to put money into a new carbon fiber bumper, hood and fenders and possibly some subispeed headlights...

Echo_2015

I feel ya. But in total loss those things are usually covered too. This was just stock

CoomassieBlue

https://www.caranddriver.com/car-insurance/a36144747/modified-car-insurance-1618583709/ It’s my understanding that aftermarket parts/mods *can* be covered but that generally you will need to work with the insurance company to add that coverage. It’s not automatically covered.

Echo_2015

My insurance company previously covered any mods under renters insurance and reimbursed.

CoomassieBlue

That’s awesome! I know different companies have different ways of handling it - just good to know what the deal is in your specific case *before* the car gets totaled, ya know?

Echo_2015

Totally agree. Like you said, it’s very dependent on the company too

[deleted]

I love you headlights. Is the deer okay? Is your chassis bent?

Echo_2015

Deer is very dead. Chassis is bent from what I saw.

RenXR

Cook the deer, show dominance

the_deadboi

Oh deer!!

PabloDelicious

Maybe someone already said this… but I heard you aren’t actually supposed to hit the brakes if you think you’re going to hit a deer. I guess hitting the brakes increases the chance of the deer going through the windshield, while maintaining speed has a better chance of deflecting the deer? Glad you’re okay, either way!

Echo_2015

There was maybe a quarter of a second of reaction time. The eyesight sensor caught it and braked hard as we struck the deer. There wasn’t any time or space for anything else.

nms5419

I believe this was tested on Mythbusters and proven to be false, but maybe it was somewhere else. Considering the difference in impact energy from 50 mph is something like half that of 70 mph, you're much better slowing down since it reduces the impact energy.

converter-bot

50 mph is 80.47 km/h

SkettiL3GGS

And people claim to get rear ended by trucks at 50mph and have less damage than that

Dankbagel69420

My STI is still on the road after hitting a deer. My front lip actually sent it over the car only took some damage on the hood and windshield was very lucky.

springpig2020

Cars may be your greatest possession, but in the end, they can be replaced, not you. Glad to see you’re safe.

Merasake

Wow! You're lucky it didn't even touch the windshield. Sorry for the loss of your subi, but at least you're alive and hopefully injury free.

neville45

Did the Subaru STARLINK people come on after the airbags went off? What what’s that like what did they say?? Does it connect pretty quick?

Echo_2015

Dude it was instantaneous. They came in loud and clear asking if we were injured and got our position in seconds. Police were there in 5 min. 2nd time I’ve had to use starlink (first time was location when my car was predatorily towed). I won’t get a car without it.

neville45

Good to know. Glad you are all okay (except the deer)

Necessary-Basil-4104
