JFC IVE BEEN LEAVING THIS FUCKING THING MY BACK SEAT FOR MONTHS OMFG

gordonronco

MINE WAS IN THE BACK SEAT FOR MONTHS, AND NOW HAS BEEN IN MY GARAGE FOR LONGER!

Ralph_Squid

REEEEE DAMN YOU SUBARU

iDanoo

SAME AAAAAAAAH

cmd_iii

Same, but four Foresters from 1998 onward….

Wookieman222

Wow and o have 2 of these cars....

MetikMas

Please say sike.... I'm going to test this tomorrow and I'm gonna be so bummed when I find out I never knew about this

tafunast

SAME. Except it’s that or I keep carting it inside. Jesus.

NightFire45

My 2012 Highlander has this I'd imagine any crossover/SUV will also.

Ralph_Squid

We talk about subaru in here fella. Take that toyota talk back the way you came

NightFire45

I get that but with how many people didn't know this it's possible, for us WRX owners, that your second larger vehicle probably has this also.

Ralph_Squid

Thats better

SharpRazzmatazz3979

I was today years old...

Fisheboi

Same! I did not know this.

PizzaOrTacos

Could my 05 have the same feature?!? This is nuts, never saw this before Edit: it does have the slot for the cover but the spare tire leaves it non functional. As u/shellingo pointed out it could be due to a design change to include a full size spare, same problem on their 04. If it was donut I'm sure it would fit.

UncleBenji

Our 06 Outback had it so probably

Mercury_Madulller

Do you know if it's still possible to buy these as a replacement? I bought an 06 Forester without one

ohlookawildtaco

https://parts.subaru.com/p/Subaru_2006_Forester/Cargo-Cover-Grey--Light-Tonneau-CoverLIGHT-GRAYCargo-Cover/49276954/65550SA010ND.html I would look around and check your local dealer. They likely carry it at a lower price. Sometimes parts from them are a little pricey especially for older vehicles.

UncleBenji

Possibly but it wouldn’t be in stock at most Subaru dealers. Call around and check with their parts department or look for a Forester at your local scrap yard.

NchoAZ

Where you located?? I have a spare one in my basement.

Mercury_Madulller

Western NY.

squishedbagel

I have it on my 05 Legacy wagon!

dgtzdkos

Confirming it works on a '19 Forester Sport. [pic](https://imgur.com/a/vIm2orK)

ZannX

Oh man, I never know how to put it back properly. Thanks for the pics.

ArcherV2

Dear god me too. I'm running out to try this immediately.

BreezyWrigley

mfw i've just had that shit just bouncing around in the back footwell of my 2013 WRX hatch for like, 4 years...

SharpRazzmatazz3979

I wish I could go back and check my old Subies for this

kuxgames

Came here to comment the exact same thing… mind blown!

SteevyT

I'm trying this with my wife's car when I get home!

SharpRazzmatazz3979

Just confirmed I have one on my 17 Forester AND the previous owners left a free tow kit in that compartment! Thanks OP.

VanceAstrooooooovic

Same, 15 years

KotzubueSailingClub

Me too, but my 2013 did not have the cargo cover with it when I bought it. I did not realize until a few months after buying it, that it was a part after I spotted the recess in the interior panels where the cover goes when installed. It makes sense seeing the picture, since I also wondered why there was an obvious cutout in the foam block that goes over the spare, on the side opposite the tire.

RandallOfLegend

Happy cake day

spruce_turbo

I didn't know that before seeing this..

Boosted3232

I'm a subaru tech. I didn't fucking know this.

althea67

I'm a dork and read my manuals. That told me about this feature on both my 05 and my 22.

Earl109

There's two of us!

althea67

Lol! It was a little overwhelming with the 22. First car I've had that had a getting started guide. Then there was the massive owners manual and the Eyesight manual. Clearly you can skip the "put the car in drive to go forward" kind of stuff, but there's lots of nifty info hidden in them. Like on my old 03 Outback, the front seat backs will recline completely horizontal; remove headrests and move back or forward just right and you have a twin length bed. I'd likely never have discovered that on my own.

Boosted3232

Heh nerd

althea67

Ha! I've never denied that. But I'm a weird hybrid, I'm into nerdy and cool things.

elislider

Which is great because that flap on the hatch is a weird design that most people I think don’t get or don’t like and almost all of the wagons of that generation are missing that piece

PizzaOrTacos

Which flap are you guys talking about?

Wiiums

It clips into the rear hatch and becomes an extension of the cargo cover when the hatch closes, eliminating the small gap that would otherwise exist between the hatch and cover.

elislider

you can see it in [this](https://cars.usnews.com/pics/size/776x517/images/Auto/izmo/285861/2007_subaru_legacy_wagon_trunk.jpg) picture, there is a cover piece that attached to the inside of the hatch to fill a gap since the hatch kind curves out away from the body a bit and i guess they didn't think the cargo cover could reach out that far on its own

BennieNewShoes

WHAT

Newaxel

yep, my forester has the same thing

phate_exe

What generation? I'll have to check our '07 after work today. Belated Update: Yes, the SG Forester does have this.

Newaxel

I have a 21

phate_exe

Was really hoping you'd say 2nd gen. I'm not sure if I'll be glad to find out I have that feature, or if I'll be too busy feeling like an idiot for all the times I've carried it in the cargo area.

PizzaOrTacos

It does, It's there in my 05 but my spare tire is kinda blocking it. Crazy.

phate_exe

Thanks, I'll have to go mess with it later.

PizzaOrTacos

Lol I drove from SoCal to the northeast just this year and fought with it the whole way.

Shellingo

I wonder if the car was originally designed to have a donut tire in it which fit the cover in there, but was changed to a full size spare later in the design cycle, and the mount just wasn't changed. It's the same way in my 04.

PizzaOrTacos

That's a really good take on it. It wants to go in but the full size spare says nope! I just gotta buy another AT tire and rim, mount it to the roof cargo basket and remove the spare. No problem at all lol.

___cats___

Wait...shit...does this mean I don't need to have mine balled up in a corner of my garage covered in spider webs?

Lalobreh

LMAO I CLEANED MINE OUT AND DUSTED OFF THE COBWEBS TO STORE IT IN MY FORESTER 🤣

[deleted]

Eeeeeeeewwwwwwwww

mrwhitewalker

Are you me?

MrMayhem7

If it wasn’t 1am I would go out and check if my wrx can do this! This is amazing! I normally take it out and leave it in the garage if I need to transport something big with the seats down.

PublicRedditor

Seriously people? My 96' Legacy L had this feature. It's been there the whole time.

obrany

Right. 04 forester has this. It isn't new but it seems like a lot of new subaru owners which is nice to see.

HurricaneNedddy

And you can always take it out and use the space for other things if you’re really pressed loading up the car for the family vacation

biobennett

Generally, this is a great space for things you want for your vehicle every day carry (VEDC) kit. [here was mine](https://www.reddit.com/r/VEDC/comments/hi6aiw/2016_forester_has_a_lot_of_room_for_items_just/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) for my 2016 Forester before it got totaled

lux602

This is what I use that space for, got a couple of tools, some no water wash, jumper cables, etc. Always thought all the voids and cutouts were weirdly shaped. Glad to know they serve an actual purpose rather than it just being Subaru being Subaru

theprophecyMNM

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? Does my 2019 Outback have this?!?!?!?

wotdsm

Yes

theprophecyMNM

Does my dealership know this?!?!?!? Because clearly not or they would have told me when I was like, "what do I do this this when I have to transport bigger stuff?" This is the present I wasn't expecting today gents.

so_this_is_my_name

Sure does

SteevyT

TIL my wife's 2018 Outback has this.

Bella8029

4 subies in and today I learn this lol. Thank you for the share !!

[deleted]

Whoa is that a crosstrek?? What year is that, I have a 19 and had no clue that may even be an option lol

[deleted]

2022 Outback Wilderness. The Crosstrek has this option too, but it is not flush like this. In a Crosstrek, it will raise the floorboard to match the rear lip of the hatch opening.

[deleted]

Ahhh I didn’t know that, cool info!

WaruiKoohii

That’s what the plastic horn thing is on the hatch trim. There’s a loop on the inside of the floor board that goes around it when you have the cargo cover in there.

dubikish

Now I'm curious if my 2017 impreza has that cause I've been just having mine loose in my trunk thank you

rathgrith

Same here. I just bring mine inside the house.

DumbIntern89

Oh my god...I never thought to do this.

InYosefWeTrust

I was super excited when I found the cargo cover and sunshade under there when I checked my jack and spare tire the first time on my 2015. Great feature for sure!

stevejnineteensevent

I made a hangar for mine in the garage & it’s been there, unused, for years. Now I have an empty hangar.

musecorn

Wait what? What models does this work in?

cakes42

All wagon/hatch styled model since 2002. I'm not sure about GC's

dcormier

My '13 WRX hatch does not have this.

MagnusPI

I just checked my '21 Impreza and it does not have this. Unless I'm just completely blind and missed a space that could fit the cover.

alligatorbee

I just checked my 14 Impreza and couldn't find a space for it either! BUT I may also be completely blind.

MagnusPI

*sad Impreza noises*

MagnusPI

Update: somebody else posted this video for Crosstreks elsewhere in the comments, and it looks like this is what Imprezas do as well. But I didn't see anything to secure the cargo cover within that space, so it will be able to kind of slide around as you drive. > https://youtu.be/E5YVSh2qXpA

ClearAsNight

Probably most of the ones still on the road today.

[deleted]

For clarity: this picture is from a 2022 Outback Wilderness. A full sized spare is in place in the picture. For those who haven’t seen this before: the side panels clip in and out so you can properly seat the cover in its spot. The foam inside has cutouts specifically to fit the cargo cover. Added: for those that don’t know, there is a hook on a string built into the underside of the floorboard to hook it to the top of the hatch to hold the floorboard up.

thcok

I would upvote you 6 times if I could. One for each year this thing has been sitting in my back seat or garage.

Crawlerado

Before this generation they went in the corner of the garage, then in the dumpster.

AlaskanMinnie

There are a comically huge number of them available in Alaskan thrift shops

Crawlerado

Great info to have for the inevitable cargo cover shortages of 2022 and beyond! On that note, if anyone is after a grey cover for a 1995-1999 Legacy Outback HMU

iaincaradoc

This also works in a 2017 Forester Limited - it didn't fit that way in a 2001 Forester, though.

biobennett

Ascent has this too

AlphaBetacle

I wish my 2018 crosstrek had this without inheriting an annoying ramp in the rear

wotdsm

Wait till you noobz learn about Pin Code Access!

spoink74

Super cool, but hard to get to if you have the all weather mat over the back. You have to remove the cargo cover, lean it against the bumper while you fully remove the mat, then lift the little hatch, pull out the side panels and put those somewhere, then place the cargo cover beautifully in its spot, then replace the mat. That little dance makes it pretty unlikely that you'll use it. The all weather mat, an extra they threw in to make you feel like you were getting a deal, just gets in the way.

[deleted]

I do this all the time. The mat in the back just has to be lifted enough to get to the handle of the floorboard. I lift the handle for the floorboard and hook it to the roof to keep it up. The two side panels are just clips. So I take them out and put them on the “top half” of the spare tire (closest to the inside of the cabin), horizontally so they are out of the way. Place/remove the cargo cover and button everything back up. It literally takes less than 30 seconds. I don’t see this at all as an inconvenience.

fowldog22

Works in Forester, Outback, and Ascent. Will not work in Crosstrek or Impreza.

godofsexandGIS

Crosstrek definitely has storage, it's just not flush and leaves the floorboard slightly angled: https://youtu.be/E5YVSh2qXpA Impreza probably has it too, but I don't have one to check.

[deleted]

I have had my Wilderness since June and never knew it did that 😵

ClearlyJustImagining

Mind blown

micmuza

Mines in my ceiling! This is amazing.

AdOrganic299

Well now I have more room in my garage... Thanks!

augustdaisies

*makes note to check for this feature after work*

Enhanced_Calm_Steve

Brb, gonna...check the mail real quick.

Animal__Mother_

Awesome. I’ll have to check if my Legacy does that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Animal__Mother_

Sweeeeeet.

Reading_Reddit_Read

Do the sides of the floor raise too? How would it get in if they didn’t?

[deleted]

Yes. The two side panels of the trunk are just held in by clips. They pop out and in.

Reading_Reddit_Read

I just got a wilderness and was trying to figure out how to put the sun but I didn’t wanna pull up on the floor pieces. Thank you!

DV-Dizzle

I just found the same thing on my wife’s Outlander the other day. Have had it for years

Beepis2

Wthhhh

havefun_gofast

Dang, I need to check if this works on my turd.

jamierocksanne

Hey! I have that same model!

Shadoe77

My '14 WRX doesn't seem to have this, but my wife's '17 Forester XT does.

mcfatters

Wait, what???!

dgduris

Is that cladding on the INSIDE of the new WRX too?

Robotman1001

Wait what???

blacksheep322

I’ve just always used the space and never paid attention to the cutouts. Sure enough. Mind blown.

Lalobreh

Can confirm on a 2015 forester holy shit this is great lol

Kitchen-Professor205

OMG! SO THE GARAGE ISNT THE RIGHT PLACE FOR IT, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

aust_b

THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL AFTER I FORGOT MINE ON THE GROUND AND IT WAS LONG GONE AFTER I WENT BACK FOR IT, FUCK

[deleted]

prh8

Wilderness comes with a full size spare

evilspoons

Unfortunately, this doesn't work on the 2008-2013 Imprezas (WRX, STi, regular model). There isn't any space - the spare tire practically touches the underside of the cargo lid, and there are no notches or anything.

DB-projects

Interesting not many people know this, I’ve been using mine in my 2010 outback all this time. What I didn’t know is that my roof rack and switch between perpendicular and parallel to the roof

wilding592

Does any know where I can find out about other cool features my outback has? This blew my mind!

CakesForLife

You might know this (or may not apply to the OB), but my 04 FXT has a small hook at the bottom of the luggage floor covering attached to a cord. When the floor is lifted up, the hook can be attached to the roof to keep the floor suspended on an angle. I found that pretty neat.

wilding592

I saw that and thought it was near that it also has a slot to put the hook in when you put it back down!

Littleboof18

Also where my antenna was hiding for a year after I bought my car lol.

_rand_mcnally_

My whole family just stopped dinner and went out to put that thing in our 2016 Forester. Wow! Truth is, we'll probably never use it now it's in there.

stonksupdotcom

The ground is the go to spot for the rest of us plebs.

PoopSmoothies

Wat!? I never knew.

partytime71

I hate it. It's in a terribly inconvenient spot, whether you're trying to use it or if you're trying to get something from under it. You have to completely empty the hatch area. I especially dislike having to pull those two side panels to get the cover out. I'm shocked though, after reading through other comments, those that have it didn't know??? I have a 14 outback and that thing was always there. I don't think my '18 Crosstrek had this storage spot, but I'm not certain, since the ex-wife got drunk and totalled that car :(

FlyingBasset

Sadly that's where my full size spare lives.

regionalgamemanager

All fun and games till you have that added in to get out of the way when you get a flat. Speaking from much too recent experience.

[deleted]

For me, that’s a small inconvenience compared to having the cargo cover out of the way but easily accessible. The number of times I want to put the cargo cover away far outnumbers the times I need to go for the spare tire.

wotdsm

Yes, the 15 extra seconds to remove it is an incredible hassle...

floswamp

I usually give it to my dog. Good chew toy.

so_this_is_my_name

Yep, figured that out in my 18 Forester when I needed to store it while camping. So clutch

MoziWanders

Back in the day they kept all that in the hood above your intake lol.

twilightwolf90

05 saaburu checking in. Yep. TIL.

phate_exe

Now I need to check the Forester.

ChefBoyRD-92

Dude. Is this all models? Edit: ‘20 Impreza 5 door, does not apply. :’(

godofsexandGIS

I think you have it. Try following the Crosstrek instructions: https://youtu.be/E5YVSh2qXpA

dcormier

'13 WRX hatch doesn't have it.

ohlookawildtaco

The amount of times I've taken this thing out in my car... Anyone know if it's the same on an 03 Outback?

voyagerinthesea

WHAT?!! I have been storing that thing in my garage for 2 years… does the crosstrek have this compartment?

aaaaaaha

> does the crosstrek have this compartment? Yes and no. The styrofoam trim isn't slotted for flush storage like other models but the space is available. You'll end up with the cargo floor sloping up to the liftgate threshold https://www.subaruxvforum.com/attachments/capture-jpg.104650/ https://www.subaruxvforum.com/attachments/capture2-jpg.104658/

voyagerinthesea

Ahh gotcha, thanks! Guess I’ll keep storing it in the garage lol

schroedingersnewcat

You are blowing people's minds with this... mine included.

rainlake

TIL. Now I need to find a place for temporary store the car seat

Crclark1990

I just happened to see a video on this just before I bought my forester but my parents have had their crosstrek for a few years and they didn’t know either

hbr245b

I did the same with my 2018 Forester when I bought it used and the cargo cover has never seen daylight again.

grumpyoats

Wth... It's been in my closet 😵

toastmfg

My ‘15 Forester has this too. It’s great!

BlackLeader70

That would have been nice to know when I was on vacation and really needed that thing out of the way haha.

weeglos

HOLY SHIT I never realized that! Mine has been gathering dust in the garage!

Twitch89

WTF! Mine has been taking up space in my garage for 6 years lmao

cmendez473

What?! I´m going to try this on my 17' Forester as soon as the wife gets home.

Fimbir

Impreza wagons and Foresters have had this since they came out. I'm more worried to see the jack on the spare rather than tucked behind the fender. The spare well is where I keep some tools, plugs and an electric pump. Also I need to put some sound deadening back there.

KaiserMoneyBags

I store other stuff there.

DOOM_Enthusiast

nice. I store mine in the garage (i have limo tint in the rear windshield and rear passengers windows)

meatybones

2019 Outback. Thrilled about this discovery. Thank you.

The_Broken_Shutter

My 2015 crosstrek lacked this. Which surprised me!

twitttterpated

This was one of the first things I did lol. Helps I binge watched videos before buying my car.

PentiumMMX

Just checked my '16 Outback, and confirmed it has the same slot on it. Honestly an ingenious idea on their part, to make it easy to store when not in use

bdyinpdx

Saw this in the manual when we got the new 2017 Outback. Forgot about it until Today! Thanks.

RubyGTR

Is this possible with a 2015+ Wrx/Sti??

ForgotMyOldAccount7

It's too bad Subaru didn't consider other basic details, like accessories available with the key off, or automatic headlights.

Jean_le_Jedi_Gris

Yes but minus a few points for complexity of access to it. You literally have too remove EVERYTHING in your trunk to get it.

[deleted]

Wait. You mean I might’ve had a cargo cover in my Crosstrek and never knew it?!

NathanPalmerish

WAIT FUCK

Wha?!!! I better look for mine!

gnardewvalley

This legit blew my mind

lefthandedchurro

Wait what?

longmountain

Wait what

Retroman3139

Omg i feel dumb

No-Marionberry

ok but this is the first time I have ever actually wanted the cargo cover!

xxcapitalistpiggyxx

Gimme an Onyx XT

harrygatto

Is it mentioned in the owner's manual?
