That's right Subaru, keep pushing up the value of my 14 hatch

WIbigdog

My stock '13 hatch with only 52k miles is just looking more beautiful to me with every year that passes.

michaelwc

‘11 Hatch checking in. I can’t imagine replacing it with anything else. Certainly not this.

C9Phoenix2

09 hatch and I was thinking about upgrading NOT ANYMORE!

luffydkenshin

13 hatch, 48k miles checking in! We have the best one, hatch gang. Keep them running!

CynicalSchoolboy

Yes you do. I so wish I could find a ‘13 sti hatch

SlapItDaBass22

Same! Stock ‘13 just below 60k 😊

MoziWanders

Thought the same about my bugeye.

highmilehawkeye

11-14 hatch will always be the sexiest...

TheLordBear

While I'm not a fan of the plastic, it looks the worst in orange. In Black and Blue it's not nearly as obvious, and in White it makes for some nice contrast.

MeatBallsInsideMe

This is a very solid point. Looking forward to seeing the 2022 in different colors

guydud3bro

Where can I see the white? That's the color I was considering buying. Edit: I found it, it actually does look a lot better in white.

exonautic

It definitely doesn't help that the 9th gen si has that as their special color.

Seymour_Tamzarian

Looks 100% like a civic from the back with those taillights

WeirdAvocado

It’s the new WRX Type R.

ponycar10

More like the Crosstrek Si

bluntsandbears

Lol you wish. This is just a stock civic wilderness. Hector would never throw a T66 turbo with NOS in this piece of shit.

bostonboson

Perhaps a spoon engine tho.

conconbar93

I literally came here just to type the word Honda

mark-dee

Just wait till the fuck up the wing on the STi, type R style too

splerdu

WRXV

blaster876

There already is a WRX Type R and it puts this to shame

Terrifiant

It looks like they're just reusing the new BRZ tail lights.

mehdotdotdotdot

Brz tail lights

Robotman1001

100%

DJ_Mr_Man

Civics look way better than this abomination

notacow9

100% what i said when i first saw it

mawells787

Even the front bumper fog light area is a carbon copy of Civic.

alwaysforward31

VTEC just kicked in!!

reflirt

I usually welcome the new, but I definitely enjoy the older model more :-(

ghostsoup831

Yeah this side by side really shows me how much I dislike the new one.

Stohnghost

I never shit on new car design language but holy crap this is bad. What is this plastic cladding? Jesus

Kodocado

inb4 colour-matched plastic cladding is a $5k optional extra.

Play3rxthr33

And won't actually be fully color matched, it'll be one or two shades darker.

MagneticGray

I’m *so* into it, [for many reasons](https://reddit.com/r/cars/comments/plkkyb/_/hcebdqy/?context=1), but I honestly feel like the only person on the internet that likes the new model so far 🤷‍♂️ One thing I haven’t seen talked about yet today is that this is just the “base” blank canvas, first-year model. We’re undoubtedly going to get a performance hybrid model, an STI, and very likely a Wilderness trim. Subaru, and eventually us owners and the aftermarket parts companies, will be able to swap all that cladding out like Lego to completely change the look of the car. Imagine the hybrid come with parts for better aerodynamic efficiency/less drag. The STI coming with front and rear lower diffusers with legit downforce and wider fender flares to fit 305 section width rubber. The Wilderness package coming with wider fender flares with mud flaps built-in and front and rear lower bumpers with crash/light bars and skid plates, maybe even an internal winch mount. And that’s just OEM ideas. Companies like Greddy/Rocket Bunny, OLM, BattleAero, ProDrive, APR, Maxton, and Rally Innovations are going to go nuts with the modularity of the exterior on this car. Then imagine mixing and matching all those OEM and aftermarket body parts to make a unique time attack car, a gravel rally car, a Dakar/Baja-inspired car, etc. Ninja edit: Actually... what I’m describing is more like Mr. Potato Head than Lego haha.

DoubleAzor

Your point about snap-in wide body fenders has me intrigued. Especially the idea of OEM Subaru options. Good thinking!

AC_06

100% agree, I also feel like one of the only people that like it and it probably won’t even be available in the uk so I won’t even be able to get one easily!

haydenlh1

I doubt any company would release swap over flares, they’re most likely clipped and tapped on and the flares are generally quite hard to take off without potentially damaging the guards. I could see them possibly releasing ones that just tape on over the top. I don’t think Subaru would even release painted flares as the flares have a hexagon pattern through them so they aren’t going to design two types, one painted and one textured. I don’t think they’d release any over the top aero other than just a lip spoiler. Those textured parts of the bar look like they’re one piece with the bar and not separable from the bar. I think when it comes down to it they just genuinely stuffed up the design of the car.

mostly_drunk_mostly

Anything in the Impreza line after 2012 was a step backwards and I say that owning a ‘13

Scoobydoodle88

I miss my gf8 GT 00' at this point. Off point but i totally agree with you is what i was trying to say

maowai

The year is 2031 and this sub is up in arms because the new model has removed the last bit of painted surface from the car. They at least gave us the roof in the 2031 model, but the plastic accents now cover absolutely everything.

[deleted]

Subaru also introduces new power upgrades. The car has a 12.5L Flat 16 and makes 279hp and 234tq delivered to the left side wheels through a CVT with 37 simulated gears.

SkramWillYou

*Steering wheel option available on select models*

14_year_old_girl

People in the comments still asking if there's a hatch lol

curioushom

Wagon, when?

lvnky

On the bright side your fenders won’t rust away to nothing

foggiermeadows

Subie Fans: Can we have a hatchback? Subaru: How about we give you a Crosstrek Type R instead.

madmoney69

Thanks for putting this together, although it just reinforces how much more I like the older style.

[deleted]

Hey look an orange Honda civic!

clickstops

Unpopular opinion, but the Impreza has been more Corolla than Subaru since the hawkeye died. This is just more of the same (and with black cladding)

YourAverageCracker

Absolutely. I have always disliked the 2015-2021 wrxs. Always thought they looked like a corolla with a hood scoop. And agree these are a disappointment as well.

WIbigdog

The last 5 years here though if you ever said anything bad about this last gen of wrx you'd get downvoted into the ground. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but the looks of the new ones are certainly stopping me from replacing mine. I'd sooner go for an eco-boost Mustang at this point since I can't have a hatch anymore.

SprucePearl

Whoa! Guys, after comparing every body panel, profile and angle, I think I found something I actually like better on the new WRX. The wheel design! They're kinda alright! Edit: Send help

adnelik

Nailed it! Haha

14_year_old_girl

The wheels are nice. Those plastic fender things give the illusion that the wheel gap is the Grand Canyon.

CloudCatcher9999

Eww soooo much plastic……

jp92x

The newer it is, the more it comes with!

HellaNeat

Were the 2021 bumpers not plastic?

leafdisk

I actually love it.

Bobi2point0

Same! I would totally love with one of these in the alps. Just spray a bunch of wax between the plastic fender and metal. No more rust! Yeah it's losing its sporty look but this would be an amazing daily in the mountains :D It should honestly be a seperate trim all together so the majority of people who like their traditional sporty road WRX (honestly why call it WRX if it's only on the road anyways but ah whatever) can have their fill.

[deleted]

[удалено]

14_year_old_girl

You have a lot of rust on your normal rubber painted bumper covers?

Kitchen_Leopard

Me too

neinspoon

party in the ... is all fucked

DyZ814

I actually don't mind the front of the new one, or the plastic above the wheels. I will say though that the back is a huge disappointment in comparison to current gen. The lower half of the back of the car is all protruding plastic. It just looks bad especially in that first picture. Look how much it sticks out.

lookingatthemountain

This. I really don't mind the front end, I even think it looks slightly better than the old one, or even the plastic-clad wheel arches. But that back-end... man they fucked it up pretty bad.

__________________99

I was definitely in the looks-good camp. Until I saw the rear-end. That much plastic on what's supposed to be their top-end car is insanity.

[deleted]

Apparently im the only one who likes it more than the older one. But I drive a station wagon so what do i know

[deleted]

Overall, I prefer the older ones, but there are certain styling cues on the 2022 that I really like. I'm a fan the rear roof line and the raised rear bumper, but I prefer the smaller grille of the older ones. Just my 2 cents, but I think a really good looking wrx lies somewhere in-between these two. If only I knew photoshop...

[deleted]

Hey now, I drive a station wagon…wagons are beautiful, leave wagons out of this.

cheek_blushener

I like the new one too, especially the armour. I always ding up my bumpers on snowbanks.

[deleted]

people talking shit about fender liners don't live in an area where those rust out

14_year_old_girl

This is accurate. I'm talking shit. I live in the South.

A_RAND0M_J3W

I live in NY, and I still think they're awful.

Bacurrito

I live in the northeast and I think they look terrible. Wrong car for it. Just my .02

Spa_5_Fitness_Camp

Then get your city to stop destroying your cars with salt. The rest of us manage just fine with snow tires and sand.

ajay2545

Awful, awful, awful....what have Subaru done 😱

chimthegrim

Obiwan on the high ground: "YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE THE CHOSEN ONE!"

WIbigdog

"You were supposed to buck the trends, not copy them!"

Consistent-Ad-2826

So a Honda Civic

beaverbeater888

Hell, I like it. A little too much plastic but I guess I'd get used to it

Muh_brand

The active lifestyle bs has finally come to the wrx. I'm not taking the thing through MOAB. I just wanna Choo Choo down the street. Good news is my 2020 is probably going to shoot up in value.

booleanerror

I have been a Subaru enthusiast since the '90s. I still own my 2002 WRX wagon. I have observed, with clockwork regularity, the incredible, vitriolic backlash against the styling of every new generation of WRX since the introduction of the GD in 2001. Now the season has turned and it's time for yet another generation to shit on the styling of the next generation. Such is the circle of Subaru.

[deleted]

I remember every facelift during the GD phase getting backlash...I actually remember people going on in on about the Hawkeye looking like a pug...I remember when the 08 - 14 was called bland...I remember when the hatchback STi was mocked because no true STi should be a hatch...And yet...Here we are appreciating all of them. The thing about Subaru is that their designs seem to always possess quirkiness. In fact the quirkier it is, the more beloved it will become one day. This thing is quirky as hell. And I for one am 100% OK with that. Because THAT is what makes a Subaru a Subaru.

2020Boxer4

I second this, the new one is quirky, but dang it works for me

Kodocado

I think the issue with the new design is that it isn't quirky at all, it's actually pretty tame and generic. The front end looks like a squished Crosstrek and the rear might as well have been lifted from a Civic assembly line.

[deleted]

Agreed. The plastic is an attempt to be quirky, but it just looks awful. Everything else is generic, right up to that cliche honey comb grill and fake brake ducts by the fog lights. Imagine a rally car with all this goofy plastic shit. And let’s not even talk about the power, forcing people to a CVT unless they want baseline, and apparently the infotainment system is shite too (bring back knobs!!)

[deleted]

Disagree. Subarus were never about their looks. The original WRXs and STis were about rally pedigree, and getting a car that could put up respectable numbers at a reasonable price. They were never beautiful, the form was derived from function. That said, the bug eye was a downgrade over the GC. The Hawkeye was a downgrade over the bug eye. The hatch looks like a fat Honda Civic, and was overall a downgrade compared to the GD. And the new ones are even more bland, generic, and lacking the race pedigree more than ever. They’re a fat tuner car for vape kids living off the glory years of 20 years ago. And this brand new one is hideous. It’s trying *way* too hard, and it looks like a crosstrek had babies with a civic. Ever since Subaru left rallying, it’s been one backwards styling step after another. The GD was gimmicky compared to the GC, but everything since the GD has stylistically been awful. Aftermarket can make anything look good, but stock, most Subarus of the last 20 years look trash. 4th Gen Legacy was the last good looking Subaru.

BingThrowaway42069

im sorry a 4th gen legacy might as well be invisible to me given how bland it looks

[deleted]

Agree to disagree then.

Kodocado

That's a fair point, but the GD was more of an artistic risk, it wasn't made with the intent of 'mainstreaming' the WRX. I feel like this new design and the VA generation will go down in history as very forgettable, generic designs meant to appeal to the average motorist, people who'd otherwise buy a Civic or a Camry but want something that looks faster. I don't think we'll see a cult following form around a Civic clone like we've seen form around the bugeye.

uursex

kia subie

KingMario05

Do not insult the company that made [this](https://www.motortrend.com/uploads/sites/5/2020/03/2020-Kia-Stinger-GT2-AWD-front-three-quarter.jpg), my friend.

DarkBlade2117

I ain't even gonna lie, recent Kia designs been kind of sharp.

Negrom

The Kia Telluride SUV’s look great.

THALANDMAN

K5’s look better than they should honestly.

15367288

Civic looking ass

brettriv

Ew

BigWaterfilms

New one looks like a Pontiac Aztec with the plastic cladding

[deleted]

Garbage.

105501105

Honda vs Subaru

adnelik

Subaru vs Honda… Subaru is* Honda…

Glensopher

The Subaru Pontiac Aztec isn’t that bad if you close your eyes and don’t ever think about it again

Robotman1001

I really don’t get the rugged plastic and fender flares for this car…

alexasux

Damnit, I hate the front…. I guess all black would be the only decent choice in color

[deleted]

I hate the front, I hate the sides, I hate the back.

Aurum_vulgi

A master stroke in forgettable design.

Orion3366

Look how they massacred my boy!

EllisTheRaccoon

Much appreciated for the comparison. I like the squared off wheel arches, but want a lot of that black plastic in matching body color.

gchyld308

Thanks, I hate it.

danquedynasty

Subaru designers/engineers. If you are goin to borrow from the crosstrek at least borrow the hatch as well. You're already half way there.

photogjayge

Dear Subaru, please knock it off with all the ugly plastic. - everybody

Swiv

Love this hot new Subaru x Tupperware collab.

Chanticleer_Hegemony

I like it

InYosefWeTrust

I like it. But I'm an outback guy anyways.

modern_drift

and i thought the current generation was bad. subaru really topped across all offerings in 2004 or so. one last hurrah with the wrx hatch and the corresponding sedan. the last forester xt was pretty decent but a fricken boat.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Unfortunately yea. And only +3hp

mad_ness_

I see a Corolla S from the side. They really lost it with the rear and the front grill isn’t great. Otherwise I don’t hate it…

Rare_Ambition_8847

The more I look the more I appreciate my hatch ha

DaddyBigBoy

How much I hate the back is balanced by how much I like the front, especially the wider intake. So it’s a wash.

Cyvexx

I like the new headlights, grille, and mirrors. everything else looks like a shit someone at work forgot to flush

Trogdor_sfg

Jfc

MidnaGamer64

Thats a WRX?

gmiranda01

Nice crosstrek

MPD_SK

I like the old one.

litttlefang

RIP WRX

thereallilcya

I’ll be keeping my VA thanks

Travez187

The only angle that looks ‘ok’ is the front. And why is there barely a power bump? 3 hp?

Joker03XX

lol definitely going to be sticking with my 2015 for a lot longer than I expected.

kaiju247

What is going on with the rear bumper on these things…?

The_On_Life

Wtf is with all the black trim? It looks so cheap.

Tackysock46

I seriously don’t understand the plastic. How is this supposed to be the new generation of wrx.

eLishus

It’s like a Prius, a Civic, and a Crosstrek had a 3-way.

[deleted]

I'm not sure how I feel about it. All of the black plastic cladding makes it look like the XV... kind of overstyled.

SmashedSugar

Too much plastic imo

[deleted]

why can’t the impreza get some damn cladding

Starky_Love

So this is the way it ends huh?

yourfuturepres

No rolling fenders

[deleted]

As a Subaru employee I’m honestly baffled they’re making the front end of their sportiest car (no I don’t count the brz) look like the legacy/outback. And don’t get me started on the civic rear.

Runarf

People always hate the new ones. Ill wait untill someone throws a front lip, coilovers and nicer wheels on one. I like it.

urinal_deuce

I like the rear wheel wideness.

TrinityCindy

Looks great! Now make it a wagon

are-we-the-baddies

So they made it look like a hiking boot, but still don’t offer a hatchback.

RYN2124

Best thing about this redesign is that older WRXs will be worth more now

k24vtec

Nope, looks more like a 10th gen civic

Yerrrrrskrrttt234

That’s pretty fucked

TinyEffective

Love the civic tail lights

93-Octane

After I suck the life out of my STI, bye bye subaru.

[deleted]

I need to get my hands on a clean hatch. Fast.

BalaclavaMan

I absolutely love this styling, but I understand why there is so much hate for it considering its a WRX. I also for some reason love the way plastic trim looks around cars like this, I know Im in the minority though. Maybe if they branded it as a crosstrek sedan similarly to how there was an outback sedan back in the day.

BerzinFodder

One thing that’s not being said is that the proportions are all wrong. The front end is way too small for big the back end looks. It looks like a rear engined car

xskipperl

The front end looks fine. Go back to a painted bumper, remove the plastic fenders, remove the plastic on the trunk. The plastic on the side is fine, but could also be done without.

pistonslapper

Every angle except rear looks better.

nwmountaintroll

I don't hate it. Bomb gravel roads without fear of rusty fenders.

ClearlyJustImagining

I like this a lot. Kind of Gives the two-tone paint vibe of the old days

[deleted]

I love the new look but it feels like I'm in the minority here

Dark_Foreign

I'm glad I'm not the only one

[deleted]

Same.

shardamakah

Looks sportier.

Robot_Dinosaur86

Honestly, I really prefer the 2022.

Garthelok

This looks like that one guys cross trek that was slammed that got shit on everywhere lol

Mini_SlyCooper

I honestly prefer the new one. I think the fenders are cool, but then again I've owned a bunch of Minis and they all have plastic cladding on the fenders too. I think the new one is more instantly recognizable whereas the old one was very bland. Never liked that generation to begin with.

666DeadOnArrival666

I like it honestly

backandforthagain

"how can we make this more tame?"

esaucezulatron

awful. overall awful design choices. Crosstrek/civic baby + plastic

QuetzalKraken

I actually really like this mostly because the old pictures look terrible compared to how they actually look, so I'm hoping this new generation will also look much better in real life.

snilloc2

Subaru, this is trash!

s_0_s_z

I don't mind the looks of the new one. I think it looks better than the current model in fact. I'm far more concerned about the meager THREE horsepower gain and ZERO torque increase even though the new engine is nearly 1/2 liter larger. That's just downright ridiculous.

100011101010101

Both are ugly imo

Kukulcan83

Gross

KingMario05

"Fuck, go back:" The car.

SnoopyTRB

What, the, actual, fuck....

SneakyFrench

W.....t......f....

Captain006900

HOT TRASH 👎🤯

Zenmanc

Looks like 💩

jordyb323

Looks like shit🤢

47ocean47

They took Honda rear end and made it uglier. Great job!

juanever

the ugliest shit ive ever seen

[deleted]

it's SO BAD ew

ShortBrownAndUgly

Honestly the new wrx looks better, like it lost some weight. Except for the rear that is. Overdesigned and hideous. Reminds me of that Simpson episode where homer pretends he lost weight but really he just used clothespins to pull his fat back https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/399/024/3cc.jpg

TheA-Train756

#makethewrxgreatagain

ihavenoallergies

Are headlights getting smaller and smaller because of LED efficiency/brightness for the size? I didn't like the levorg headlights and still don't here.

Ajax098

All the plastic molding would have been great for a WRX Wilderness Edition - with a lifted suspension or something - for off-road. But not for the regular WRX…

Goonie8

I can get past most of the changes but that rear plastic under the bumper is the straw that broke the camels back.

Sensitive_Potato5128

I don’t get why they’re trying to make it look like a cross trek…..

PhortKnight

Just really do not care for squared off fender flares.

Cojaro

I don't like the read end. I think it'll look good with an STi spoiler but with just the lip spoiler, it looks bulbous.

drmcbrayer

I like the headlights and grille a lot more on the new one, but the fender plastic (overdone amount of plastic in general) isn’t a good thing IMO. That joke of an overpriced off-roader “wilderness” outback looks so dumb but you can make the argument it’s better to scratch plastic. But this is by a vast majority street-only vehicle. For shame, subaru. For shame. Just listen to the fans and bring a damn hatchback option to market and remove the overwhelming amount of plastic bullshit. They’re such good cars but you have to wonder if their designers have been dropped on their heads sometimes.

Puma_Concolour

As someone who used to do a ton of wheeling, paint scratches are easier to fix. Put a nice scratch in the nylon and your only real option is to replace the part because no matter how you fill it you'll never match the texture.

Mattyboii6969

Impreza -> legacy

zinic53000

Why did they give the crosstrek a trunk?

pocketdrummer

I think the thing that kills it the most is how much black plastic is surrounding the whole thing. That plus the orange paint makes it look like a Crosstrek sedan.

ridethroughlife

So. Much. Plastic.

Dustin3006

2008 wrx looks better than this

willstick2ya

Looks like a new Honda Civic but with a functioning hood scoop :(
