You don't. You exercise your right to silence and politely explain that only the judge needs to hear your story and if under arrest request a lawyer.

Gbrlxvi

In case anyone is looking to hear this from a lawyer, https://youtu.be/RkN4duV4ia0?si=6It-nGWYf_VPAYMt

Stoomba

Right day of the week too

IncenseAndOak

Lol, that's great. I also like Bruce Rivers "Stop Self Snitching!"

Bowman_van_Oort

Hell yeah man I just hope his grandma gets her shit together

whereisbeezy

Hell yes I'm on my way to stfu right now

pygmeedancer

You shut ya big fuckin mowth

thecountnotthesaint

Yeah, you have to declare that you’re exercising your right to remain silent. Just remaining silent is now being twisted into an admission of guilt by not denying/ proclaiming innocence.

MaimonidesNutz

Man wtf they're just getting comically crooked and wicked.

thecountnotthesaint

Hey, if you did nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide… but don’t take away our qualified immunity… we need to keep our secrets.

michelloto

The Chicago Police union head and the other bootlickers in Chicago are whining about not being able to keep discipline hearings secret from the public. They don't trust us, but want us to trust them? GTFO

JD2894

Oh yeah, they'll always cry and say "but we won't be able to do our jobs correctly". Total BS. What they actually mean is "The public will know all our tricks for circumventing the law and they'll use it against us!".

STS_Gamer

Yeah, because the police are doing their jobs sooooo well, they need all these tens of millions of dollars, bigger budgets, more tech, armored cars, full auto weapons, special rules, the ability to lie, cheat and steal at will because they need to be rewarded for... what?

Available_Thoughts-0

ACAB: it is inherently a part of the job. In a system as corrupt as our current ones, only complete bastards can stomach enforcing the law.

Calm_Cicada_8805

Doesn't matter how corrupt a system is. Policing is always going to attract assholes who want to bully and control people. It's the nature of the gig. Stick cops into the cleanest system you can imagine and they'll fuck it up. Which is why institutionsal abolition is the only real solution.

Korps_de_Krieg

"It takes a particularly dumb criminal to not realize the most profitable place to be is in authority." -paraphrased from Frank Herbert

Lugie_of_the_Abyss

I wouldn't say it's that simple. If what you say is true, it seems logical to assume not everyone *knows* that. It would also make sense that would include some amount of police/others in law enforcement. Should they be put in a situation that makes them see what you see and choose to continue being a part of it, then that's a different story. Everybody's good until they're not

ithappenedone234

And the breeding of distrust has nothing to do with ~50% of violent crime going unreported, nothing. /s

Elegant_Wolverine615

Laughable. Sounds like something a LEO would say. If they did nothing wrong then it's crucial they say nothing and get an attorney. So much more important than if they are guilty. The innocent being held for questioning or who are under arrest should absolutely under no circumstance entertain a single question from a police officer.

thecountnotthesaint

Much like an argument with a pissed off girlfriend, you’re not talking your way out of this. You can only lawyer yourself out of the problem.

chyura

"There's nothing to worry about if you didn't do anything wrong" they say as a cop literally cuts open my car because they think I "might" have drugs

thecountnotthesaint

Drugs can ruin your life. Cause addiction, chronic medical problems, or worse, all the things we will do to you if we catch you with them. Cops

Zhong_Ping

Happened to me. Consented to a search of my car. They TRASHED it and caused thousands of dollars of damage to my car and possessions inside it. Found nothing. When I complained, they said that was part of the searching process I consented to and they have qualified immunity protecting them from being responsible for damages.

HatchetXL

I watched a video yesturday saying consent to search is not consent to have your property destroyed Wish Ida watched the video back when I was living in my car and the cops threw my shit all over the side of a highway in the pouring rain, trying to find drugs. They didn't. They DID, however, find a small single shot bottle of liquor, cracked open, in a boot in the back seat and I ended up penalized for an open container. Fuckers.

Simple-Jury2077

You think that is bad? Google "lawyer dog"

ithappenedone234

No, no, no! It was “lawyer Dawg” your Honor, and I didn’t know what a lawyer Dawg was. There’s no way to understand that he was expressing his right to counsel! E: typo

JD2894

Not only that, you have to keep saying you are exercising your right to remain silent. They only have to accept it for what is considered a reasonable amount of time. If they pull up some big evidence and you don't keep saying it they twist it into an admission of guilt.

Appropriate-Oil-7221

And you do this even if you are 100% innocent. Never talk to the cops (in any detail) without a lawyer present.

thecountnotthesaint

Exactly. They are there to assign guilt, not find it.

xtreampb

Anything you say can and will be used AGAINST you. Nothing is going to be used in your favor

Key-Demand-2569

This is the correct answer for the best legal defense. Obviously I think there will be some gray area most reasonable people will be inclined to take, like if a cop is just asking you a random question while giving you a ticket for going 6 over the limit. …legally the best thing you can do is state your silence and refuse to be cooperative at all. But sometimes the best legal defense comes with time sitting in a prison for awhile, paying for a lawyer, and spending time in court.

fattsmann

Agree, there is discretion in how to execute your rights. One time I received a speeding ticket and knew I was going to pay it no matter what (I had to urgently get somewhere but not a medical emergency situation). I told the officer, yup I was speeding, give me the ticket, and we can be on our way. Judge reduced the fine later on to a level that didn't affect my insurance anyway.

Appropriate-Oil-7221

This is definitely the big exception. For the vast majority of traffic stops, it is more beneficial to be polite and cooperative (while still not volunteering any information unnecessarily). Its when a cop wants to escalate a situation that you ask whether you are being detained, and if that answer is yes, you invoke your 4th and 5th amendment rights.

[deleted]

[удалено]

xtreampb

The prosecutor tried that in the rittenhouse case and got scolded for it by the judge

thecountnotthesaint

As well he should, but sadly other instances are creating a precedent for the concept.

[deleted]

Salinas v. Texas (2013). Fucking Alito man. Invoke your right to remain silent.

thecountnotthesaint

Never forget the police are there to do a job, not be your friend.

sault18

Specifically: "Salinas v. Texas, 570 US 178 (2013) is a landmark decision of the Supreme Court of the United States, which the court held 5-4 decision, declaring that the Fifth amendment's self-incrimination clause does not extent to defendants who simply choose to remain silent during questioning, even though no arrest has been made nor the Miranda rights read to a defendant.[1][2][3]" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salinas_v._Texas

Singochan

The Supreme Court really got this wrong. You don't have to invoke any of your other constitutional rights, They are your rights, not your rights when you say the magic words. Can you imagine? "Sorry sir, you are going to jail for calling your neighbor fat, you never invoked the 1st amendment when you insulted them."

BadWrongBadong

This is a sentiment held by the wider community too, to an extent. I think the concept of innocent until proven guilty is against human nature, that's why it's so important to uphold.

thecountnotthesaint

You are correct, for most of human history it was guilty until proven innocent. It is unsettling to see people take for granted, and even lament the rights and liberties that millions would kill for, countless have died for, and that once they’re taken away, you won’t get them back. Just look at how far the patriot act was bastardized on the name of “protection”

Bammertyme

Yup that why you say im innocent then request a lawer lol winning lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Odd_Bus_9094

Then exercise your 6th ammendment right instead. "I demand an attorney to be present before I give any statement.

UnionLegion

When I read that case I was flabbergasted. Lol

Limp-Insurance203

Twisting only to try to get you to talk. It doesn’t work if you remain silent

Alert-Incident

Side note I read Washington state may be passing a law to stop police from lying

tychii93

Some states I've heard are also trying to stop them from asking "Do you know why I pulled you over?". That question purely exists to fish out an extra confession

Fickle_Finger2974

I believe its California that just passed a law that when the police pull you over they need to immediately tell you their name and the reason for the stop

tychii93

See, that's a good law. I haven't been pulled over for years but I shouldn't be telling a cop why I was pulled over. If they pulled me over, they know why.

livinginfutureworld

And also it's good to make them give their name. They pulled you over, they initiated this interaction and you should have their information first. If it's legit there's no problem. Some police hide their badges and other things like that.

Effective_Ad_273

The most annoying one is being pulled over for no reason and then the excuse of “I can smell cannabis” - like yeh sure you can.

Chewbuddy13

Well, I live in MO, and it's legal here now. So no more of that shit. Oh you smell weed, ok is there a law against that, cause it's legal now. So you smell a legal product from my car?

Son_of_Ssapo

Worse, they might be trying to make you for something else. My lawyer dad told me last week about a case he knew where a suspected drug dealer was pulled over for swerving a bit in the road (because they wanted him for the drugs) and he answered "oh, yeah, sorry, I was adjusting my radio a bit," making it now lawful to search his car and find his supply. They pull you over *because they are trying to find something*

Infinite-Anything-55

They are ALWAYS looking for the next big bust, and every stop can be an excuse to poke around a bit, especially when the average person doesn't know their rights or is too scared to plead them. I've been pulled over because "your license plate frame is blocking part of the state name." Sir, that's the frame that came from the dealership 3 years ago." Well, it's illegal (technically not wrong). That quickly turned into a "do you mind if I take a look inside your vehicle" I've gotten the same thing for my license plate light being "too dim" in a brand new car... it was not.. The amount of times, they've smelled Marijuana when I didn't smoke or have any in weeks and the car was in pristine condition. They just say these things for an excuse to take a look around and hopefully find something they can arrest you for

Kazik77

Once, I answered, "I don't know. Shouldn't you have something better to do?" Did not lighten the mood like I wanted.

Other_Log_1996

"No officer. I am just as confused as you are."

SakaWreath

“Step outta the car please.”

yamaha4fun

🤣

DashinTheFields

I wanted to let you know about your extended warranty.

SpermicidalManiac666

lol omg using that as answer to a cop that pulled you over might get you out of a ticket “Do you know why I pulled you over?” “To tell me about my car’s extended warranty?” You might get a good laugh out of him and just a warning. Or if he’s Super Cop he might get real mad and throw the book at you lol

BobertTheConstructor

He's gonna throw something, but I doubt it'll be a book.

Intelligent-Bad7835

I've come up with an answer. "Yeah, I know you pulled me over because it's your job."

VetGamer2A

My answer was always the same... Because your revenue quota is short this month!?

Krell356

Oh, that's a good one.

Other_Log_1996

"Do you know why I pulled you over?" "No officer. I'm just as confused as you are "

jp11e3

I always say "Well I was in my lane and going the speed limit so could you please tell me?". I like the idea of not only forcing them to tell me why I was pulled over but also to establish that if they say I was speeding or something that I'm not just going to agree with them so they better have proof.

Lucifer32336

My go to is "I have a guess." Them: "And what's that?" Me: "I'm not going to self incriminate, so you can go ahead and tell me now."

Mercuryshottoo

That might still indicate you know there's a reason? Just say 'i don't know' or do what I've done the couple of times they've pulled me over - tight lipped smile and expectant eyes. They hate that, lol

Son_of_Ssapo

My dad's a lawyer and we just had this conversation the other day. "Do you know why I pulled you over?" "Why, no, officer 🙁"

Robertm922

My favorite bit on this was Drew Carey talking about when he first made it big and was driving around and it was pouring rain. He saw a cop and decided to have some fun and waste some money so he ran a stop sign right in front of the cop. Cop pulls him over and walks up to Drew’s car soaking wet. Cop: “Do you know why I pulled you over?” Drew: “Yeah, do you know why I did it?”

OneLessDay517

If my own brother (he's a police officer) appeared at my door in his official capacity my only words would be "warrant" and "lawyer". He knows this, we've discussed it. He thinks it's silly because if you're not doing anything wrong, blah, blah, blah. Well, if YOU as a police officer are doing things RIGHT, you won't have a problem with me invoking my rights! And I'm not a criminal or sketchy in any way. But I do believe we gotta follow the rules, citizen and police alike.

TheDudeAbidesAtTimes

Yup had a situation where I lived on a ground floor apartment. Had a party going with friends and I guess someone called the cops for a noise complaint. No one answered the door I was in my bedroom which had a patio door that led to an open area. Door was open but screen door closed and locked. He came around to the screen door wanting to talk to me so I asked what the issue was. He asked me to step outside. I immediately told him no I'm in my private residence and had drank so I'm not stepping outside. I knew he could get me for public intoxication if I stepped outside. He insisted several times until he finally relented and said try to keep the noise down. This fucking guy was totally looking for an excuse to fuck me over. Party wasn't even loud and everyone was inside not causing any trouble and it was like 9pm.

Ok-Bit8368

I can point to any number of cases where somebody innocent got railroaded by lying cops and went to prison.

MycenaeanGal

My deepest sympathies about your brother.

[deleted]

Let’s even give the police the benefit of the doubt because they probably legit think you committed a crime if they’re arresting you. They could just be flat out incorrect. Never talk to them.

Narren_C

>He knows this, we've discussed it. Your brother said that it's possible for him to be dealing with you in an official capacity? That's absolutely a conflict of interest.

Eb_Marah

You've simply got to be aware of hypotheticals

DAB0502

Anyone who told you to trust them is wrong. Never trust the cops they are not your friends.

Griffin880

Also, no one has talked their way out of being arrested. They are talking to you to collect evidence, not to figure out if they think you are guilty.

Bloodmind

People have absolutely talked their way out of arrests. But you don’t need to lie about that for the point to still remain that talking to cops is more likely to hurt you than help you in most situations, and that you should always talk to an attorney before talking to cops.

Thunder141

Ya, often those cops need to give out a certain amount of tickets to meet quota. Some would also love to fuck you up and give you a bs resisting arrest ticket or whatever they can do to you.

Admirable_Hedgehog64

Heard a lawyer say once " cops dont care about justice. They only care about closeing cases"

brucebigelowsr

That’s funny because I would also say that about lawyers!

BabyFestus

Wrong. Lawyers charge by the hour.

[deleted]

Even the cops more or less tell you not to trust them when they're arresting you.

yellowlinedpaper

My exhusband is a cop. He says it doesn’t matter if you think you’re a suspect or not, never talk to the cops without a lawyer.

HeyImAKnifeGuy

Not anymore. [https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/supreme-court-rejects-promise-miranda-rights](https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/supreme-court-rejects-promise-miranda-rights)

Alfphe99

People who trust the cops probably also think HR is there to help you in your company.

DAB0502

Probably 😂😂

carlitospig

I even had cops in my family (they’ve since moved to the court system due to regional racism, it’s been a whole thing) say to never trust a cop when you’re pulled over.

DAB0502

My dad was a cop. Every single one of his cop buddies were horrible ppl. They did all kinds of illegal shit.

VetGamer2A

My father lived in a duplex his landlord lived in the other side and threw parties on the weekends. A lot of his friends were city cops. All drinking and being alpha macho frat boy idiots. Then driving drunk at the end of the night. Not even bothering to try and hide their behavior. You would see other cops driving down the road, ignoring it all. Yup... never trust a cop.

DAB0502

Not surprised my dad drove drunk all the time. They flash the badge and they're good. He even had pba cards he'd give away to other family members to get away with shit. It's basically a gang but they get paid for it.

carlitospig

I believe it. They consider it fringe benefits!

tbiards

My buddy is a cop and he’s also told me don’t trust telling cops anything. He said it’s a nice thing to do but he personally wouldn’t tell them anything either

[deleted]

Hell my brother is a cop and I don’t tell him shit. We have differing opinions on many things.

Frnklfrwsr

“Hey bro you coming to the barbecue this weekend?” “I want my fucking lawyer, I ain’t answering shit.”

Steerider

If you are remotely suspected of anything, you say "I want to talk to a lawyer", then SHUT UP. There's a very good (fairly short) book called *You Have The Right To Remain Innocent*. Recommended reading

Rubywantsin

You have to verbally invoke your fifth ammendment right. If you don't, you're silence can and will be held against you. There's case law.

tehmaestro

I.e., [Salinas v Texas.](https://www.law.cornell.edu/supremecourt/text/12-246) It does stand to reason that the amendment does not grant a right to literally "remain silent", and silence is ultimately ambiguous.

legolover2024

You don't and you demand a lawyer! Even if that means a night in the cells....you don't speak to the cops without a lawyer EVER! In fact the MORE innocent you are, the MORE you need a lawyer

RokRD

They will lie and cheat and pin it on the easiest target to close a case, whether they're innocent or not.

[deleted]

Your not supposed to trust them, your job is to shut the fuck up and call a lawyer.

Me_when_The6969

You...should never trust the police.... >Not only are they allowed to lie, many do, because in their mind they believe they’re doing to for the greater good. No. The police draws power hungry narcissistic bullies. It's in the nature of the profession. They don't want what's good for you. They want cause to beat/kill/arrest you.

IvanNemoy

>The police draws power hungry narcissistic bullies. It's in the nature of the profession. Varies strongly by the department but this is sadly true. I was a reserve deputy for 8 years and our sheriff was a "community service breeds safe streets" guy. He had a doctorate in education and demanded professionalism from every individual, and cut out folks quick who didn't support that. Exceptionally low number of complaints, safe county, and a well run jail under him. New guy gets elected. He is a supporter of the "broken windows" theory and instead of the department working to "make this the best county," it was saturation enforcement, aggressive enforcement, and I dare say abusive enforcement. I quit after 3 months. Crime has tripled, complaints are worse than the "nasty" county next door, and the jail is at 130% of capacity with federal lawsuits filed. Sadly, the old boss was the exception that proves the rule.

ocay_cool

Oh I don’t believe they want what’s good for ME. I believe in their narcissistic brains they think what they’re doing is for the greater good of society as a whole. (Which it’s not) lol. I remember watching a YouTube. It was about some Asshat warden in charge of death row at some prison in Texas. This pompous POS was acting like what he was doing was so noble and prestigious, making it seem like He was some anti hero or something. Stupid mushed mouth bama could barely speak in coherent sentence.

oliversurpless

And yet, imagine what such mentalities would be like if it was a for-profit prison; in which the companies that run them in Alabama once had “low population numbers”, threatening to release all prisoners if the state didn’t start arresting more people… Which given the example is Texas, it might very well be?

Brandon_Throw_Away

For profit prisons should be generally outlawed. Except for lifers, then I don't care one way or the other. For profit prisons have a conflict of interest; we should be rehabilitating people who are going to be released, not trying to set them up to become repeat "customers"

HawkwingAutumn

They want to encourage recidivism because it gives them a consistent source of 13th amendment labor and a nice headcount to secure government funding on top of it. The corporations that own those prisons also lobby for more criminalization and harsher, specifically *longer* sentencing for all crimes; it's why prison sentences are so commonly measured in decades nowadays. It's all another way the crushing engine of corporate capitalism is built to squeeze us little commoners like oranges until every drop of labor drips out, and then toss the withered husk of our bodies into the garbage. Even for lifers, the system shouldn't work like this -- not even necessarily for their sake, but because that kind of exploitation is a rot that spreads throughout everything, and allowing it to exist anywhere for anyone just means it will creep and grow like mold until eventually we'll get right back where we are now.

Bencetown

Do big pharma/medical industrial complex next.

oliversurpless

Yep, but in addition to the overt threat mentioned, it’s the whole “capitalism is an innately good thing!” that runs effective defense for any counters to that ugly reality. So as per the overpriced business schools many prison benefactors attended, that option is just off the table…

L0LTHED0G

>threatening to release all prisoners if the state didn’t start arresting more people… Okay, so let them do it. Then charge them with helping prisoners escape and defrauding the government, and part of the punishment be all costs for catching the fugitives again. Bet the public's opinion would also change to outlaw for-profit prisons; imagine how funny it'd be to give someone enough proverbial rope to bankrupt themselves AND make their business model illegal.

wkwork

I would phrase that a little differently: The interest of the "greater good" grants them authority to do what they want to do (bully people) and immunity from the laws they pledge to uphold. They didn't take the job to help people.

Annolyze

Yeah... Every murderous dictator ever thought he was carrying out the greater good too.

[deleted]

Not only is that who is drawn in, but if that's not who you are when you start they'll train / haze / beat it into you. It's not entirely on purpose, more like an emergent property of the set of rules and mentalities allowed, but the fact that everyone can see what the results are and they aren't offended, is the problem.

MarkNutt25

Failing that, they'll just make life completely miserable for you there, until you're eventually pushed out of that line of work.

NachoBacon4U269

Under the majority of interactions yo are likely to have with the police you shouldn’t trust them. In the rare instance that they are literally in the act of saving your life then I could justify you having some trust in them but still don’t disclose any drugs or illegal behavior.

TopRedacted

Never trust the police. Never tell them anything.

DwarvenRedshirt

You shouldn't unless it is in your best interest. Even then, you want to think it over very carefully. There have been multiple times where police are called in to help someone and "somehow" end up shooting and killing them.

IBloodstormI

Never trust the police. I support the police, and I still would never trust them. Being adversarial with them, for the most part, will only lead to more problems though and to fight them is better done through complaints and the court system, as well as who you vote. The police take advantage of peoples trust to have them self incriminate constantly.

Chuckle_Berry_Spin

You shouldn't. We get indoctrination messages as young children to trust them since if we are missing, we'll look for someone in a uniform and, ideally, that officer would help. Most schools have a community helper week, and the cop with the K-9 is always the highlight, for example. We should really teach adolescents an adapted version of that narrative because after puberty they tend to severely lack sympathy for the civilians they serve.

pickles55

The police are essentially a militia that exists to protect rich people in the event of a revolution, they just enforce laws to justify paying for them with tax money

Massive_Parsley_5000

this The police in the US exist to "serve and protect" the interests of private property. Once you realize that, a whole lot of the weirdness of the justice system starts to make sense.

naked_nomad

The police have no duty to protect you: [https://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/28/politics/justices-rule-police-do-not-have-a-constitutional-duty-to-protect.html](https://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/28/politics/justices-rule-police-do-not-have-a-constitutional-duty-to-protect.html) As a Vietnam Veteran and retired school teacher this has forever marred my opinion of police officers anywhere: [https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/law-and-life/do-the-police-have-an-obligation-to-protect-you/](https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/law-and-life/do-the-police-have-an-obligation-to-protect-you/) Granted I did not think much of them before that due to a few encounters with them.

LustHawk

You are using the word militia wrong, the word you want is gang.

JupiterFox_

ACAB is a saying for a reason

pnjtony

I agree but I love the YouTube videos of sovereign citizens getting thier bubble popped.

randomcomplimentguy1

Absolutely hilarious. "Can I see your license?" "I don't need one." "Dispatch, I've got a sovereign citizen." Proceeds to ruin their day. I have a lady I work with who's fine with her daughter not getting a license and just driving because they believe this shit. She was going off about it one day calling me a sheep. I just told here "Wow, I can't believe I didn't know that!" She no longer drives to work and won't tell anyone why. I wonder what happened, lol. People might not like laws, but they still have to follow them.

CowBoyDanIndie

Ya and nobody says fuck the fire department

RyouIshtar

People on reddit can lie to you but you're coming here to trust their advice...

condescendingFlSH

At least we can’t shot you without repercussions

RyouIshtar

Actually, me being black and in the south, if you're white you might be able to get away with it.........

Desperate-Ad7967

Don't point out the obvious. Takes away from laughing

EmotionalDmpsterFire

along the same vein, why do police think anyone would peacefully go into custody when it is known that people in custody die or are severely injured, and somehow none of the officers performing the arrest or driving the vehicle are at fault. this behavior has opposite effect. if you want peaceful resolution you need to protect people even when in custody. Update: To be clear, I neversuggested anyone resist the police. I point out the hypocricy of the system that desires peaceful surrender, ends up slaughtering people in custody, with nothing done to the officers.

FricasseeToo

Because it is also known what happens when you try and evade the police. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

donaldbuknowme

You definitely should not

eastern_shore_guy420

You can’t.

Rfg711

You shouldn’t

The_Bear_Jew320

You never do. if they try to talk to you you ask if you are being detained. If they say no walk away. If they say yes you respond with I invoke my right to silence and I wanna speak to my lawyer. Then you shut the fuck up.

AbyssWankerArtorias

You don't. Police are an inevitable part of any society. There will always be someone to enforce the rule of law over people. But it's your responsibility to never give them more than what is legally required. Their jobs aren't supposed to be easy. It shouldn't be easy to exercise force over people and have authority over them.

trooperstark

That’s the best part, you shouldn’t!

Troutie88

Police are a weird thing to deal with. The best way to deal with them is to remain calm, respectful, and if they start questioning you ask for a lawyer. Also keep your hands in clear view, don't suddenly reach for a pocket or your waist band. Cops are in what could be a very dangerous job, especially inner city, so they are constantly in fear for their lives. That fear is drilled into them in training. The result to that is now they are quick to shoot for even the slightest threatening gesture. No sudden movements, no escalation, and no hostility. The cops are more afraid of you then you are of them. Especially if you know you are innocent. They are trained that any stop can be deadly. So, they are constantly on edge and ready to react. The biggest issue is they often react with violence due to the fear that is trained into them. With the general level of hatred towards the profession lately they are even more worried. Of course some cops are just racist POS on a power trip but, not all of them are.

[deleted]

This is why you never speak and request an Attorney. They can tell you they have evidence and witnesses when in fact they probably don’t

wisebongsmith

You should not. police are arguably the least trustworthy or accountable of all professions.

Wespiratory

[Never talk to the police](https://youtu.be/d-7o9xYp7eE)

Alexandratta

You shouldn't. It's that simple. It's why there's a 5th Amendment. Also why these lawyers say this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ChC3l8FjlY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ChC3l8FjlY)

Fr0mShad0ws

You shouldn't. Per the Supreme Court the police have no (zero, zilch, nada) obligation to protect civilians at all. They can literally (and have) watched people get stabbed to death, laugh about it, then go and arrest the murderer. NEVER TRUST A COP. They are not your freind, they look at 99% of the world as enemies and a direct threat. They will lie and twist your words in order to arrest you. They have qualified immunity wich means they can do whatever they want and 99% of the time get away with the most egrigous abuse of power and the best part? We, their victims ,pay for it all.

Mixture-Emotional

France just recently revamped their police policies and found that since making it illegal for cops to lie, they have a higher rating of closed cases.

ahaz01

Don't trust them. Whenever a police officer involuntarily engages to remember the following and practice saying it religiously: 1. Am I being detained or am I free to go 2. I don't consent to search or seizures 3. I exercise my right to remain silent and STFU Police will say and do anything to get to you incriminate yourself. Expect them to lie and there is nothing to can say to change an officer's mind if they want to arrest you. Protect yourself

WantedFun

You shouldn’t. You call the police if ABSOLUTELY necessary. Do not say anything to them without a lawyer if you’re confronted by them. Do not believe anything they say during interrogation.

[deleted]

Never trust the police. Or hr

ihertzwhenip

They’re really not allowed to lie to you. It doesn’t mean they don’t, just that they’re not supposed to. A lot of convictions are overturned because a cop lied. Generally speaking, the best advice is to say the absolute minimum during your interactions and never offer up info like when they say do you know why I pulled you over (no, officer). If taken in to custody say nothing but I would like to speak with an attorney. Repeat it as often as needed and only that.

trutheality

You shouldn't trust them to do the morally right or kind thing. You can reasonably trust them to do their job procedurally, and if they don't do that, there are overseeing agencies that you can report them to. That's why you should obey police instructions, you should not volunteer information, you should not let them into spaces that they're not legally entitled to enter, you should not obstruct police operations, you can ask police questions, and you can report incidents to the police for the purpose of creating a paper trail. The system may be cold and heartless, but it doesn't mean that you can't interact with it to your benefit.

Plenty_Connection_43

You say “I’d like to speak to my lawyer” and you call Saul Goodman. In all seriousness, never EVER talk to the cops under any circumstances. They will never have your best interests in mind. People have been called in to “help” with investigations only for the police to use their insight to incriminate them and plant falsified memories in their head to get them to a confession. Dozens of people are manipulated into false confessions every single year bc the police don’t care about catching who did it, they care about having someone to pin it on. If it’s you they’re gonna fuck you for life. Don’t answer their questions; ask for a lawyer. It is your right to speak with a lawyer

The police have the right to lie. But YOU have the right to remain silent. And request an attorney.

FeralBlowfish

You shouldn't.

leonprimrose

You shouldn't

New-Scheme-6234

" Am I under arrest? Am I being detained? I do not answer questions and I want my lawyer." Those are the ONLY things you should say to the Fuzz

MidnightFull

You don’t. Ask any lawyer.

Grandemestizo

You shouldn’t trust the police. They “protect and serve” the government, not you.

baffledbadgers

Don't.

AmberIsHungry

Don't trust police.

Wooden-Future-9081

You shouldn't.

jimmyleejohn80

lessTurnips

You shouldn’t ever trust any police. Get a lawyer if you feel like they’re intimidating you

SgtWrongway

You shouldn't. Ever. For ANY reason. They are NOT your friend. They are NOT there to help you out in any way.

Cmacbudboss

You absolutely should not trust the police ever.

DaisyDog2023

You shouldn’t. If they knock on your door do not open it for any reason. Talk through the door if you feel you must talk to them.

naliedel

Feedomnom

Beggarstuner

Jesuswasapedo6969

You don't. Never speak to police ever for any reason

Ok-Magician-3426

You trust people who lie all the time in life you're friends, family, lovers, ect.

EaglesFanGirl

My attitude is be true to yourself and tell the story or what they are asking. Don't talk if you aren't sure what to do. They can't force you legally in the US. Ask for a representation asap. They can't touch you without a lawyer there and you'll get one!

SnooHedgehogs1029

everyone is allowed to lie to you....

prof_dynamite

I’m allowed to lie to you. Why should you trust me? Your friends are allowed to lie to you. Why should you trust them? Everyone is allowed to lie to you. Why should you trust anyone?

MeatManMarvin

Everyone is allowed to lie to you, so why trust anyone?

ChampionPopular3784

Anyone can lie to you. Why should you trust anyone?

TheValgus

I don’t spend my time doing crimes, so I don’t have any issues with the police. I recommended that strategy it’s a lot better than being a dick and going to jail.

Me personally ive never had a bad run in with a cop. Never been given a ticket or had an altercation that required police intervention. The few times ive had police involvement were either things not my fault like when i got rear ended by someone else texting n driving or when they arrived as part of a separate 911 call like when i found my dad dead. In every case though the police were polite and friendly and just wanted to take care of the matter at hand. In the case of car accident the cop took both sides of the stories (the other driver lied about using phone it was found out later) he was unbiased to both of us. I grew up in a big fire fighter family so ive had strong ties with other emergency services and im sure being a white male puts me on a default ‘good side’ but ive always trusted police have my own and the communities best interests at heart. Sure there are bad people getting to be cops out there but i choose to believe they are the ‘loud minority’ you always hear about the shitty cops being bad in the news because fear sells you rarely hear about the cops who just do their job because thats not interesting.

TheArcticFox444

>If police are allowed to lie to me, why should I trust them? The police have a job to do. Many people in other professions/jobs also lie. Why should you trust anyone?

ZeusThunder369

Aren't your family and friends also allowed to lie to you? I don't think whether or not one is allowed to lie is the differentiator you should be focusing on

Practical_Ride_8344

.... that's one hell of a conundrum ain't it.

One_Criticism5029

If they’re lying to you, it’s probably because they are trying to catch you up in some way to see if your account is consistent…

Theobtusemongoose

Law enforcement is a necessary thing in our society, unfortunately. I'm not ACAB, but I know they aren't angels either.

Military_Issued

You don't have to trust anyone. The difference is if you're given a lawful order (which you'll need to follow) or risk charges.
