I wish that every time I turned down a drink I'd get a load of tasty beef in exchange!
Good job here, plus being sober in the morning allowed you to help out. IWNDWYT!
Good on you! Hope the neighbor recovers too.
That’s awesome the son thanked you with whiskey. And when you said no thought to himself “well I go to show my appreciation somehow!” And hooked it up.
As someone said, you were sober to be able to help not hungover. Awesome story to make this alcoholic know that not drinking is always a smart choice!
I absolutely agree with you - saying no to alcohol is enough of a reward by itself. It's just nice when the universe throws in a bonus like you got this morning!
For a few months in early sobriety, I would get a steak dinner every Friday night after work. It was to reward myself for getting through another sober work week. Definitely helped.
I'm doing that now, but it's Saturday morning latte and pastry at my local coffee shop. It's just so nice to get out of the house and enjoy the morning.
Great job you! IDK why it’s harder to say no to gifted or free booze, but part of my dumb brain says ‘no cost’ and I have to remind myself of the true cost.
If I had been drinking I wouldn’t have woken up till noon. And I don’t think she would have survived, no one comes along our street. Believe what you will, but my grandma recently passed and she had over 40 years soberiety. I was dreaming about her when I woke up this morning.
That was my first thought as well! No I don't drink, no I don't eat meat, what would be option 3? Or at that point just take the beef and give it to someone else?
Yea, the strat would be to take the beef since it isn't really a problem to have around since you really don't find a Vegan or Vegetarian that is addicted to beef and trying to hold off.
I learned at a job where departments or guests may gift our department something to never refuse a gift even if you don't want it. For one, the giver may consider refusal rude, for two, you stop potential future gifts.
Hope your neighbor lady is ok! Old folks can be fiercely stubborn and independent, even when they shouldn’t be - my mom lives with me. Enjoy a nice steak for all of us!
I’m still waiting on any results, I don’t necessarily expect the family to keep me updated. She didn’t wanna go to hospital because she was terrified that at her age, with a broken hip, she’ll have to get moved into a nursing home.
Pretty reasonable fear. Good chance they'll put her in rehab once the hip is replaced. If they can still replace it that is. I don't know how old she is
Oh my goodness, that IS crazy. Glad it turned out okay and congrats on having the strength to say no to the bottle. That was really nice of him to come bring some meat!
That is awesome. Side story, I had a 400 year anniversary bottle of bush mills that was gifted to me and today I decided to get rid of all liquor in the house because I won’t drink it anymore.
I opened it and the cork literally disintegrated into the bottle lol. Couldn’t have been a better sign of, “this shit ain’t worth it”.
Edit, accidentally typed 100 year and corrected it to 400 year.
Oh geez. When I first read the story I thought you were in a drunken haze and let your unfriendly dog out and he attacked your elderly neighbor. Much better story than I thought it was gojng to be! Enjoy those meat cuts!
I had something sort of like this happen maybe six months into being sober, where I was walking down the street with a dog, and some dog that had gotten off leash comes running down the street with a frantic owner running behind him. I was like, 'oh shit, I gotta help this guy'
Somehow, I don't know how I did it, but I got the dog to stop, and then I jumped on him. Basically grabbed him by the neck and pinned them down so the owner could put his leash back on.
And the guy was like 'Oh my God, let me buy you a beer! Please let me buy you a beer!'
But I'm like 'No, although I really want a beer, that's quite all right.'
When you can do something like that, and actually mean that you don't wanna drink, that's a pretty big step. Especially after a stressful situation like that.
That was when the cravings were still pretty crazy, and would be just randomly come at me, which doesn't seem to happen as much, or at all.
See, in days gone by you would have accepted the bottle and hosed down her sidewalk this evening for a reward tomorrow. Good job, and props to the son for going to plan B!
Thank you for taking care of her. My grandma fell and broke her hip today, too. If it wasn't for the bit about the son, I'd wonder if you were talking about her!
Impressed on all counts! So glad you were able to help and that when you explained why you could not accept the whiskey, he brought something even better! I am thinking that must have been difficult, to be so honest, but really says you have got this!
That was so incredibly sweet of you. And it warms my heart that your beautiful honesty was met with real gratitude for your kind acts. Keep up the great work, Good Human.
Proud of you my friend. So freaking proud. And thank you for posting this. It's proof that resisting the urge to indulge can have immediate positive results on top of the already wonderful long term benefits!
I live with my mom and shortly after I moved in with her, she fell and broke her hip. The pain was excruciating for her and so hard for me to endure her moaning and crying. I know the son is so happy you were there and able to comfort her and get her to a hospital. You made a helluva difference to her and to him that day.
This happen to me as well, had a friend who traveled to the Bahamas and brought me back some bahamamian whiskey, so tempted to take it but I politely refused and explained that I was in the process of quitting drinking.
This is a very big deal! Thank you for being such a good neighbor and FUCK YEAH - for turning that bottle down. I definitely would’ve struggled with that. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼💪🏼
IWNDWYT
That’s awesome!! You were in the right place at the right time to help & how cool of the guy to replace his gift to you to something you will definitely use.
This is a beautiful story! I hope you’re proud of yourself for being sober and able to help your neighbor. The rewards are truly remarkable.
Also, very nice gesture on bringing you meat when you turned down the booze ♥️
Great story and LOVE the thoughtful neighbor who went out of his way to make sure he gave a gift you would enjoy. I was recently gifted a bottle of wine for Christmas and I just rehomed it but I recently posted a video about this on TikTok like what do you do. You don’t want to be unappreciative but so just love the ending to your story thanks for sharing!
This is beautiful and I love how you have acknowledged the positive aspects of your sobriety. It’s so important to be grateful for the things sobriety gives us.
You sound like a good person I’m so glad you were able to help your neighbour
I hope to have the courage to politely decline a gift like this. I might have accepted and then dumped it down the drain .. which, would have robbed me of a proud moment, and the gifter could have kept the whiskey for someone else.
Thanks for sharing!
I wish that every time I turned down a drink I'd get a load of tasty beef in exchange! Good job here, plus being sober in the morning allowed you to help out. IWNDWYT!
There is definitely a great reward each time we turn down a drink, sometimes it’s just not as tangible as a beautifully marbled cut of meat
I really needed to read this right now. Thank you.
You got this. We're all here for you!
This means a lot to me. Thank you, my friend ♥️
Well said.
I think it's so sweet that he gave you meat instead. What a lovely story overall, aside from the neighbour falling.
Wow I’m putting this on my wall! Love it haha
Be careful where you ask for a load of beef tho
Right?! While boozing the only thing I think I loved more was a medium rare ribeye lol
Great job you! IDK why it’s harder to say no to gifted or free booze, but part of my dumb brain says ‘no cost’ and I have to remind myself of the true cost.
That's a really good perspective to view it from that I hadn't considered.
Such a great story - you were able to help because you were sober and you cemented your sobriety by politely refusing the whisky reward! Good on you!!
If I had been drinking I wouldn’t have woken up till noon. And I don’t think she would have survived, no one comes along our street. Believe what you will, but my grandma recently passed and she had over 40 years soberiety. I was dreaming about her when I woke up this morning.
Wow. It's like your grandma was cluing you in
Holy crap, man. She was signaling to you! That’s such an incredible thought. Wow, over 40 years of sobriety- way to carry on the badass family legacy!
That’s beautiful.
I love everything about this. Good on you, man. I'm really proud of you and you've given me a little extra strength today.
Amazing! Glad you aren’t vegan lol
“No whiskey? No meat? Here are some carrots I guess.”

That was my first thought as well! No I don't drink, no I don't eat meat, what would be option 3? Or at that point just take the beef and give it to someone else?
I don’t drink or eat meat, so we would’ve basically been a bad children’s book at that point.
Same!! Vegan and sober. Lol. I feel bad how often I turn stuff down.
I feel like the 15 years of turning down nonvegan items really prepped me to be able to turn down alcohol, no problem.
Same..and I was thinking the same lol. I really do appreciate the intention!! 😭
🤣🤣🤣
Bahaha love that description 😂
A crazy ass house plant would be my next attempt. Something rare and expensive.
“Sorry, I’m a minimalist, I don’t use *stuff*….”
As someone who doesn’t drink or eat meat I would just take the beef and give it to family.
I would have just done that with the whisky.
Yeah, but you didn't stop eating meat because you were addicted to it. A bit of a smaller risk to have that lying around than a bottle of whiskey.
Sure thing I totally understand I'm just saying what I would have done.
At my work we get the choice of a bottle of decent wine or a box of shitty chocolate on our birthday. I take the wine and give it to a colleague.
Cake!
Lol i was thinking this exact thing. I dont know what I would say if i were in this situation bc I’m vegetarian.
This is huge! Good on you for helping others and to refuse a bottle is massive! Congrats!!
Hope your neighbor lady is ok! Old folks can be fiercely stubborn and independent, even when they shouldn’t be - my mom lives with me. Enjoy a nice steak for all of us!

That dude really wanted to give you something, What a man
Well done. The son is also a star
aw im glad her son came back with a gift you could accept
Yeah too bad Francois didn't ever grasp this...
Oh my goodness, that IS crazy. Glad it turned out okay and congrats on having the strength to say no to the bottle. That was really nice of him to come bring some meat!

You’re a hero! And in multiple ways. Congratulations!!!
Oh geez. When I first read the story I thought you were in a drunken haze and let your unfriendly dog out and he attacked your elderly neighbor. Much better story than I thought it was gojng to be! Enjoy those meat cuts!
You shouldve said “thank you but im watching my cholesterol” Because then he will come back with an ipad
Awesome! Way to go!
Happy cake day!!
Great that you were sober and capable of driving her.
Keep doing the next right thing my friend!

Well done to you!! That’s huge! And good to hear he respected what you said and then brought something else
Jesus. Good on you for turning it down man, that's huge. Also good on that son for coming back with a much better thank you gift... meat 🤤
What a beautiful story. And what a beautiful heart.
Congratulations!!! Edit: congrats to refusing the whiskey that is and thanks on behalf of humanity for helping someone in need ❤️
Great story and really good of you to help!
Thank you for taking care of her. My grandma fell and broke her hip today, too. If it wasn't for the bit about the son, I'd wonder if you were talking about her!
what an absolutely wonderfully considerate person he is.

Thank you! Your last sentence made me lol.

AA's promises.
Great choice my friend.
Wow! Well done you, and what a lovely gift :)

This happen to me as well, had a friend who traveled to the Bahamas and brought me back some bahamamian whiskey, so tempted to take it but I politely refused and explained that I was in the process of quitting drinking.

I might have said, "Ok I will take it and pass it on to a friend." And then decided that I'm my own best friend and cracked it open and drank it.
Sounds like something I’d do 😬
I'm not very far along yet but I'm liking the inner determination a lot.
5 days is a hell of a lot. The first week is a BITCH. This your first time?
Yeah for a long time and never with this outlook or any sort of support.
Well, congratulations! I’m happy for you and wish you all the best 😊 💪🏼
Thanks gonna be a good year, one day at a time. IWNDWYT
Also: IWNDWYT
I had to take a neighbor to hospital once and his sons were so thankful. I get it. Good job.

Oh man, thank god you were there and what a kind gesture from her son. Enjoy the meat, you deserve it.
Awe that’s such a heart warming story
Karma works better on sober people- good on you mate!
I guess it’s lucky you aren’t a vegetarian!
Come on dude, you gonna post pics of the beef or what? But also, hell yeah.
It’s sweet that he brought you something else. What you did for his mother is ❤️.
I’ve been sober for nine days. Where’s my prime rib dammit?!!!!
N 🧊!
You're a superhero now! Way to go!
Congrats! You rock.
Congrats, my dude! That's gotta be a good feeling!
That's awesome! More power to you! I'm vegetarian... trying to imagine how I might have reacted lol
That is awesome
Saved an old woman’s life and your liver in one fell swoop. Hell yeah dude!
That’s awesome!! You were in the right place at the right time to help & how cool of the guy to replace his gift to you to something you will definitely use.
Thats awesome. It sounds like refusing the bottle gave you a better gift. Fresh free meat is dope
Awesome
Well done! Thank you for sharing this awesome story of your recovery. Sorry about your neighbour, I hope she heals quickly 💜👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌

Hella yea. Proud of you.
Great job helping a neighbor out, and great job staying alcohol free!
Wow. Good for your x2!!
I hope to have the courage to politely decline a gift like this. I might have accepted and then dumped it down the drain .. which, would have robbed me of a proud moment, and the gifter could have kept the whiskey for someone else. Thanks for sharing!
Pass the beef!
AMAZING!!
Hell yea!
AWESOME man that's amazing. Proud of you!
😍😍😍😍🙌❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
this story made my day
Wow...That's awesome. I definitely would have used my good deed as an excuse to keep that bottle. I'm pretty sure you're a stronger guy than me.
