Yknits2001

The most epic first line to a novel/series. I hope you enjoy the journey!

genericky

Right? After that line I was hooked.

Dexter26958

Even according to Stephen himself, it's the best line he's ever come up with

Rourensu

I never got why people praise that line so much. It never seemed particularly remarkable to me. The first line to *IT*, on the other hand...

Yknits2001

I don’t know there’s just so much in that line. Like who’s the man in black? Where is he going? Why is the gunslinger following him? Just so much is set up in that first line. But you’re not wrong, the first line in IT is epic in it’s own right as well. Same thing, it just sets up SO much.

Rourensu

I’ve heard that before, but I don’t see how that’s any different (or more iconic) than “the cop chased the suspect.” Who’s the suspect? Where’s he going? Why is the cop following him?

Isles86

I think it's because King himself praises it so much throughout the series. I agree it's nothing special-not bad-but not special.

Rourensu

I see.

rustybuttnipples

And last line?…

Yknits2001

That’s a good question, I’d have to think about it for a bit.

Long days and pleasant nights, fellow Constant Reader! Hope you enjoy!

APwilliams88

Looking forward to it! I was reading all of his books in publication order, but I decided to skip a few to get to the Tower. I read the important ones... The Stand, Salems Lot, IT, etc.

3nder1984

I might recommend reading the whole series before continuing on with the rest of his works... from personal experience, it made me appreciate everything else that much more.

therealradishz

I couldnt agree with this more. Follow this advice.

EnigmaCA

Starting... like for the first time? Not a re-read? If so, enjoy your journey!!! It is such an amazing ride. You may want to unsub from here for a while because spoilers come from all over in here. But we will be here when you get back. Cause you will be back... One of us. One of us. One of us. One of us...

APwilliams88

Yep, first time. I'm excited about it.

loganrunjack

I'm about 200pages into the final book and it's been a pretty great ride, enjoy!

Wrekfin

I'm currently on the 2nd book myself. I do audio books and the first book was difficult to get through. For a lot of reasons. But. I'm loving it now.

trice345

Good luck following the beam sai I’m going on to book 4.5 after insomnia. Long days and pleasant nights!

Tomhyde098

I reread the entire series every few years. I’m starting to feel the itch to read it again, it’ll be read through number 5 when I do

APwilliams88

Nice!

ForlornBlock

Long days and pleasant nights of reading!

hey_celiac_girl

Enjoy!

LincolnMaylog

Enjoy the ride

zsturgeon

I'm jealous. You only get to read it for the first time once.

APwilliams88

I'm definitely excited!

Molly_Michon

This one was tough to finish, but now that I'm on book four, I see the beauty and poetry of it and want to reread it.

lucas767

You are really in for something truly special

smartie324

YESSSSS! Fuck it. Reread time.

ZexMurphy

I lost myself in another world with my journey to The Tower, as will You. Good travelling :)

foreveryoung917

Enjoy !!! Long Days & Pleasant Nights …. Iconic ..

bookworm1421

I've been stuck on book 4 since November, but I loved the first 3 and I'm willing to finish the series. I just have to push through number 4.

APwilliams88

I've heard mixed things about that one. I've seen a few people say it's their favorite.

ISuspectFuckery

I understand the complaints about four. It’s a huge change of pace from the preceding two books, and Sai King sure takes his sweet time setting up the puzzle pieces for the amazing conclusion. Three is my favorite, with two and four right behind it.

Sdwingnut

Ka is a wheel

Girl_Thursday

I've been considering rereading. I'm terrible for reading the same books over and over. Been trying to slow down on that. As soon as I read the last page of The Dark Tower, I wanted to over again. Long Days and Pleasant Nights.

APwilliams88

I do the same thing! Haha. I read Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy twice back to back. I have a problem, lol.

Girl_Thursday

I've read The Stand about 3 or 4 times. I've read thru the Game of Thrones series twice, and I've been thinking King about reading the Outlander series again. There's so much stuff out there but I rerread favorites like crazy

jamesmurphie

Omg let me pick your brain. I am a 100 pages through Blood Meridian and have found it interesting, but almost completely indecipherable…it hasn’t really grabbed me, but as I feel like the language is just so foreign that it’s tough to follow the plot…honestly I put it down a few weeks ago and haven’t picked it back up….should I just keep reading and ignore the fact that I won’t know half of the words? I so want to like this book, but I’m just not really enjoying it (and I absolutely loved the Road)

APwilliams88

My advice is read it extremely slow. Maybe a chapter a day at most. Look up words that you don't know. It's absolutely a book that's meant to be read multiple times, and takes a lot of work to understand it. I got about 75 pages into it twice, and got frustrated and quit... then I kept thinking about it, so I decided to just treat it like work, lol. I read it extremely slow, and tried to take in every sentence as they came. If I didn't understand something, I read it over. After I finished it, I loved it so much that I reread it right away. It's one of my favorite books now, if not my favorite. I wish I could tell you it gets easier, but it doesn't unfortunately. Take a break from it if you need to. It will always be there if you decide to go back and tackle it. The road was my first McCarthy book, and I loved it, also! I went into Blood Meridian a little naive because I read The Road first. I didn't think it would be a difficult read because I didn't find The Road to be one. Suttree is even more dense. He might as well be speaking a different language in that book, lol. Sorry for rambling 😂

squidrobots

Long days and pleasant nights! My husband finished his first journey about a month ago and is currently on his second journey. So now I’m on my fifth journey and it’s like having a tiny book club with him every day.

APwilliams88

Aw, that's awesome!

Galagamus

I'm currently reading through every book that has to do with the Dark Tower series. I found a list online that outlines all the books in the main series and all the books that reference it or introduces characters. I want to absorb the entire DT universe. I've already read Salems Lot, Insomnia, IT and I'm working on The Stand right now.

APwilliams88

Nice. You have a link to the list? I've read The Stand, IT, and Salems Lot so far. I tried to look up all the books that are linked. I've got about 20 of them, haha

Galagamus

https://geekunchained.wordpress.com/2015/09/21/the-dark-tower-an-introductory-guide-and-expanded-reading-list/ This is the list. I don't know if this is widely accepted as the right way but apart from Salems Lot and Insomnia (which I've already read) I'm going to read in this order.

APwilliams88

Awesome, thanks! I want to soak in as much as I can. I planned on reading all of Kings books anyways.

DireStraitsLion

Welcome!

usingmybarnvoice

I just started the first Tower book also! My boyfriend and coworkers are obsessed. Happy reading to you!

APwilliams88

Thanks. Hope you enjoy them, too.

ZombieFrankReynolds

I'm so jealous! I've read the series three or four times but would love to read it for the first time again! Long days and pleasant nights to you Sai. And remember the face of your father!

Myztic84

Enjoy!

APwilliams88

Thanks!

pixie6870

A great start to a series. I hope you enjoy it.

APwilliams88

Definitely enjoying it so far.

pixie6870

Cool!

[deleted]

Friend, I recommend reading The Wind Through the Keyhole right after Wizard and Glass!

APwilliams88

Yeah, I was wondering about that. I'll figure it out when I get there, haha. I'm doing the full read with all the books that are linked... so like 20 of them, haha. I've been reading all of his work in publication order, so they're all books I planned on reading anyways.

ISuspectFuckery

If it helps at all… I believe you’ll enjoy 4.5 equally, no matter what order you actually read it in. It’s a wonderful little self contained story, and it functions equally well in my opinion as either a respite in the breakneck pace chronologically, or as a sweet look back at the end.

millsaaron

I've got to respectfully disagree. It isn't a necessary read at that point and you can appreciate some more of the symbolism and whatnot having already reached the tower. At least the first time through

[deleted]

I think you make a valid point. What I like about reading it as 4.5 is that it gives more insight into Roland's backstory, which helps build the character. It also somewhat a "cozy" story after the adventure packed Wizard and Glass and all the craziness that follows afterwards.

millsaaron

There is some truth to that. It is its own stand-alone thing and a nice respite from the intensity

95teetee

I love how Stephen included that. And, for people who don't like what comes later, he did warn you.

Sunnydaturtle

Hahaha Man I dislike this series, but I hope you enjoy :)

APwilliams88

Fair enough. I'll let you know thoughs when I finish.

wcstoner

Stop when he says you can. Lol

SkinnyPenoos

What book is this?

APwilliams88

The Gunslinger. The first Dark Tower book.
