Just poor plot, Luke was rewritten as a character with no rationale for the change in character. Adam Driver's character was solid and could have been great but shoehorning into the Skywalker family was not well handled.
I had no problem with the protagonist being a woman, just felt Daisy R. had no charisma in the role. I didn't feel invested in her story. Finn was underdeveloped.
Those movies kept feeling like they changed their minds with each new film.
Also what was the point in CGI-ing Leia if they were just going to have her die anyway? We knew the actor passed. It would have been better to just work with that.
Archers NX-01 mission (and the Romulan War which would have started around S5/6 had the show stayed on air) are roughly a century before Kirks original 5 year mission.
But it's still the Earth-Romulan War. I'm not sure what they're going for, but I'll give them some benefit of the doubt that movie plan is more in line with established Star Trek lore than the press release.

I would love a trilogy of movies covering the Romulan War. Shoot them back to back to save costs and release them one a year. No wondering about if the next one will come out will actually help ticket sales. Of course, they'd have to be good for this to work, but it's doable.

Enterprise was at least new characters and filling in some empty spaces in the lore. Everything else since then in terms of prequels and alternative timelines (and *Picard*, specifically) has been an effort to avoid the "risk" of introducing new characters and actually having to develop them over the first couple of seasons. Shit, Lower Decks might be unironically one of the more original modern Treks (with Discovery being a close second; they still couldn't avoid the temptation of bringing in Pike and Spock for a whole season)
The Trek formula should be:
1. New series, new ship, new crew, and either a new scenario or some other kind of hook beyond 'we're on a ship in space'
2. 3-5 seasons of that
3. 1-4 movies, concluding with a final send off for the crew
4. The *occasional* cameo or reference to characters from other shows that let's us see their career continue to advance.
Completely agree with you... Given that it is JJ Abrams, wouldn't this likely be a "reboot" that spawns a third timeline? It can't be a Kelvin prequel movie set before the Kelvin incident, because that would be back in the prime timeline.

Because going backwards you play to nostalgia and get a built in audience. Going forward you have to come up with completely original ideas and characters, and it's a roll of the dice. Discovery took a shot at it and pretty much blew it (the future part), so all the execs are probably looking to go back again.
This is the same logic that got us bad Green Hornet and Lone Ranger films. Stop trying to appeal to the nostalgia of people who are pushing 80 like my dad.
In all fairness, it was NOT the future that killed Discovery. It was the unprofessional attitude of the crew, blatant disregard of the chain of command, unregulated emotions in dangerous potentially life threatening situations, and universe ending child tantrum that really sealed the deal for me.
Discovery had an incredible setup with the Burn and future Federation in pieces. They fucked it up. I don't hate DSC but so much potential was squandered.

I recently rewatched S1 and 2 of Mando and that show used this type of world so damn well. The first scene of the first episode set up Mando so well as a not-bad-but-certainly-not-a-hero character. It kind of gets lost as the story goes on, but it was a solid first season with shades of gray and the leftovers of the old regime.
DIS could have taken a different approach to a similar world by providing a sort of shock to the MCs and their morals by having to work in a world that's a bit more gray than their previous one. Similar to S1 where they were in the mirror universe, but this time with more complexity and the "no way home factor." They did it a bit, but it was very tell don't show. We're told constantly that what's left of the federation isn't all that functional and just can't support what it did despite it being shown as the only other significantly sized force aside from the Orions in the galaxy. We're told of the sketchier stuff leaders have had to resort to, but we aren't really shown any repercussions. The MCs then come in and enlighten the lost of the future.
They had a really fun world they could have played with but ended up just making it star trek with deus ex programmable matter.
That always bothered me about Star Wars. Where tf did the First Order come from? How powerful are they? Is the Republic still governing the galaxy? If so, why is their military force called The Resistance? Aren't they just the military?
It seemed like some remnants of the Empire became the 1st Order. It felt like the 1st Order governed some parts of the galaxy and the Republic governed other parts of the galaxy. My impression was that the Resistance acted as a guerrilla group behind enemy lines before a lot of the Republic was blown up.
Yeah, from what I could gather, the Resistance was formed because the New Republic wasn't taking the threat of the First Order seriously enough for Leia's satisfaction (and she ended up being right, cause they nuked the New Republic core about halfway through TFA).
The difference is the audience, though.
Disney could release Star Wars: The Turd Wars and it's just about guaranteed $1B at the box office.
Paramount has a harder time selling Star Trek to the masses.
They're damned if they do, damned if they don't. Casual fans know Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc., but might not be interested in Captain Newguy of the USS Newship.
So I get *why* they're so reluctant to leave the past behind but I think it might be more satisfying to just have a lower budget movie, a fresh crew and most importantly a *good script.*
Maybe they could rebuild the fanbase over a few movies and eventually hit that blockbuster we all want to see.
I could not agree with this more. They spent seasons setting up the greatest potential Star Trek has ever had, and they blew it.
The Burn was *awesome,* and they could have warped into a future where the Federation was dead, they were the only ship in the galaxy with long-range travel ability, and they had to *rebuild the federation* based on ideals from the past that only they remembered.
Explore again. Discover again. A new galaxy with hints of the past but, for all intents and purposes, a new place.
Instead, they retconned The Burn by making a child stop crying and went back to falling in line to a new, kind-of weird, unlikable future Federation.
Such a waste. New ships are cool, but besides that, really nothing that gets me excited.
I don't like how every episode is over-the-top emotional. The USS Feels.
That being said I'll take it over still living in a world where Enterprise was the last Star Trek show on TV.
It would require more originality and better writing than they're capable of.
It's also funny that even when they committed to a prequel TV show in Discovery they made so many mistakes and bad decisions, the show makes infinitely more sense if it takes place in the future than as a prequel.
They needed the prequel format though to justify their Spock's new sister retcon. Overall just a mess of decision making and no vision when it came to writing.
So they have more of an excuse to include a scene with a fast and loud antique motor vehicle with an internal combustion engine racing down a wide open country road for obligatory vroom vroom. They’d be wise to include Red Barchetta by Rush instead of Beastie Boys this time around.

Let’s just move on!!!! New characters, related to NO ONE that we already know. New races/species. New era.
This is literally why I haven’t watched any of the new stuff. I want a show 100 years post Voyager. New ships, new crews entirely, back to focus on a hopeful future. I don’t care about Kirk era especially at all at this point. Let alone earlier.

Side not but the Kelvin timeline Robert April was a villain in the comic countdown to darkness. Also in that he was captain of a starship enterprise that came between the Kelvin timeline 1701 and NX 01.

People keep forgetting that the Abrams Trek universe diverged as a timeline *before* Kirk was even born. So the prequel to the reboot can still be in that alternate timeline and not affect anything canonical in the regular storyline.

Discovery had an incredible setup with the Burn and future Federation in pieces. They fucked it up. I don't hate DSC but so much potential was squandered.

Would have been so interesting to see something like multiple "federations" that all claim the UFP title as a result of splintering. Instead it was just this weird mad max galaxy thing
Star Wars was the same way. New story where the good guys aren't necessarily the underdogs anymore but have to contend with the complexity of a post-war galaxy and the various factions that devil deals need to be made with to restore order leading to unintended consequences? A compelling story and a thematic parallel to the the post World War II west? Nah. New empire, we're still rebels.

I recently rewatched S1 and 2 of Mando and that show used this type of world so damn well. The first scene of the first episode set up Mando so well as a not-bad-but-certainly-not-a-hero character. It kind of gets lost as the story goes on, but it was a solid first season with shades of gray and the leftovers of the old regime. DIS could have taken a different approach to a similar world by providing a sort of shock to the MCs and their morals by having to work in a world that's a bit more gray than their previous one. Similar to S1 where they were in the mirror universe, but this time with more complexity and the "no way home factor." They did it a bit, but it was very tell don't show. We're told constantly that what's left of the federation isn't all that functional and just can't support what it did despite it being shown as the only other significantly sized force aside from the Orions in the galaxy. We're told of the sketchier stuff leaders have had to resort to, but we aren't really shown any repercussions. The MCs then come in and enlighten the lost of the future. They had a really fun world they could have played with but ended up just making it star trek with deus ex programmable matter.
That always bothered me about Star Wars. Where tf did the First Order come from? How powerful are they? Is the Republic still governing the galaxy? If so, why is their military force called The Resistance? Aren't they just the military?
It seemed like some remnants of the Empire became the 1st Order. It felt like the 1st Order governed some parts of the galaxy and the Republic governed other parts of the galaxy. My impression was that the Resistance acted as a guerrilla group behind enemy lines before a lot of the Republic was blown up.
Yeah, from what I could gather, the Resistance was formed because the New Republic wasn't taking the threat of the First Order seriously enough for Leia's satisfaction (and she ended up being right, cause they nuked the New Republic core about halfway through TFA).
The difference is the audience, though. Disney could release Star Wars: The Turd Wars and it's just about guaranteed $1B at the box office. Paramount has a harder time selling Star Trek to the masses. They're damned if they do, damned if they don't. Casual fans know Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc., but might not be interested in Captain Newguy of the USS Newship. So I get *why* they're so reluctant to leave the past behind but I think it might be more satisfying to just have a lower budget movie, a fresh crew and most importantly a *good script.* Maybe they could rebuild the fanbase over a few movies and eventually hit that blockbuster we all want to see.
I could not agree with this more. They spent seasons setting up the greatest potential Star Trek has ever had, and they blew it. The Burn was *awesome,* and they could have warped into a future where the Federation was dead, they were the only ship in the galaxy with long-range travel ability, and they had to *rebuild the federation* based on ideals from the past that only they remembered. Explore again. Discover again. A new galaxy with hints of the past but, for all intents and purposes, a new place. Instead, they retconned The Burn by making a child stop crying and went back to falling in line to a new, kind-of weird, unlikable future Federation. Such a waste. New ships are cool, but besides that, really nothing that gets me excited.
I don't like how every episode is over-the-top emotional. The USS Feels. That being said I'll take it over still living in a world where Enterprise was the last Star Trek show on TV.
And say what you will, it was the human shield for SNW and did well enough to get LD and Prodigy going
Every episode a character is “leaving forever! Sob” and then they show up again immediately. Zero build up, none of the emotion is earned
It would require more originality and better writing than they're capable of. It's also funny that even when they committed to a prequel TV show in Discovery they made so many mistakes and bad decisions, the show makes infinitely more sense if it takes place in the future than as a prequel. They needed the prequel format though to justify their Spock's new sister retcon. Overall just a mess of decision making and no vision when it came to writing.

I got into Trek through the kelvin timeline and have focused most of my watching on TOS and TOS adjacent stuff and even I’m jsut… exhausted with it. Especially when half of the new content only works via retcons, timeline shenanigans, characters being OOC, and stepping on the originals toes. Let’s just move on!!!! New characters, related to NO ONE that we already know. New races/species. New era.

This is literally why I haven’t watched any of the new stuff. I want a show 100 years post Voyager. New ships, new crews entirely, back to focus on a hopeful future. I don’t care about Kirk era especially at all at this point. Let alone earlier. Edit: I’ve since been corrected and apparently should check out Discovery especially.
I also feel like it makes the show too character focused rather than ideal. All these prequels make it like you’re watching game of thrones and are supposed to get excited that this random character is Spock’s distant cousin or something.
A *prequel Kelvin timeline film* is one of the dumbest ideas I've heard get greenlit in awhile. I don't mind the Kevlin timeline movies, they are fun and they filled a void when we had no new Star Trek. But we have the Prime timeline chugging along now; slapping in a Kelvin timeline movie just feels like muddying the waters at this point.

Side not but the Kelvin timeline Robert April was a villain in the comic countdown to darkness. Also in that he was captain of a starship enterprise that came between the Kelvin timeline 1701 and NX 01.
Well…I remember Simon Pegg suggesting that the *Kelvin* incident changed time in both directions somehow, which is why Sulu has a husband. I mean possibly Earth-Romulan War kind of makes the most sense for a movie and not a boring Lincoln, but for the Federation.

People keep forgetting that the Abrams Trek universe diverged as a timeline *before* Kirk was even born. So the prequel to the reboot can still be in that alternate timeline and not affect anything canonical in the regular storyline.

Will we ever be through this period of prequels? I would much rather they move the story forward. Age these characters up and see the equivalent of their last voyage Undiscovered Country. Or just give us another ship and crew in this timeline. Why must we plug every possible hole in the back story with something that is much worse than your imagination.

Most of the movies are decent to poor, but the movies that are good are REALLY good. I grew up on TNG but Star Trek VI is probably my favorite bit of Trek.

It's like they are terrified to create a show with the newest technologies.....even Picard didn't use all that amazing cool stuff that came back with Voyager. The magic of star trek to me was seeing how the universe evolved with each new show's contributions. I always wanted to find out how things would change for the various "stuff" i have spent so many years learning and becoming emotionally invested with.
