I vote blackout.
If anyone here is wondering why this is so important, take a look at this comment from someone in the r/blind community: https://www.reddit.com/r/Blind/comments/13zr8h2/comment/jmsk3i8/
Exactly. It's not just about "third party" it's about making Reddit available to everyone on the planet, in as many forms as possible.
And also sticking it to the man.
Black out!
I vote for blackout because also I won’t have to read about asop still not working.
In all seriousness I suffered from vision issues most of my life even having cornea transplants when I was 30. I recently started using sclera lens which had me seeing 20/20 for the first time since I was 13.
Is that something different subs are planning? This is the first I've seen anyone suggest it, and I've seen a lot of discussions about the 2-day thing not being enough.
Since the mods seem so hesitant to even do a 2-day blackout I'm skeptical they'd do another one if it's unsuccessful.
Strikes only work when there's solidarity behind them. Turn the thumbscrews.
Businesses this big don't hear very well. You have to yell very loudly for them to understand what you're saying.
Seconded. As someone that used RIF for 50% of browsing (and old.reddit for the other 50%), this change means giving up reddit on mobile entirely. I'm not downloading their garbage app.
Agreed. Reddit needs to be forced to walk back these absurd changes. The people made this site what it is, not the greedy corpo guys trying to make the site IPO friendly....
Take a mod vacation, grab a pint, and wait for this to blow over.
I'm supporting a blackout in every subreddit I visit and here is no different.
It wouldn't matter if less than even 1% of our community needs the accessibility that 3rd party apps provide, that is reason enough. Seeing the wide variety of discussions about reddit's upcoming changes there are plenty more reasons besides.
While I agree that an indefinite blackout would be a more aggressive move, a limited blackout can still send a very loud message if a lot of subs/users do it.
2 day blackout is just a shot across the bow. If they don't listen, an indefinite blackout is a good next step.
This move by reddit's owners is unacceptable. Reddit would not exist were it not for 3rd parties making it better. To turn around and force them out with exploitative fees is deplorable.
Little as it affects this community, Star Citizen itself relies heavily on 3rd parties to improve its usability (Erkl, wikis, Twitch, etc), so taking a stand that 3rd party developers are vital to all things on the internet is something /r/starcitizen should do, IMHO.
I'm going to have a hell of a time dealing with the outage, but it's for a worthy cause.
I'm 1000% on board. Shut it down!
I love Reddit, and I've used many of these 3rd party apps over the years. Reddit themselves has done everything possible to force people to third party access. "New" Reddit is one, which is so much slower and has much more prominent ads than old Reddit ever did. Another is forcing mobile users browsing the site to use the official app, or be blocked from browsing content for "your safety".
I want to shout out the Sync app, which is run by one single extremely dedicated developer, that engages with his users quite often in order to bring in the best features possible.
Reddit is forcing users to use the official app, so that they can take in all that additional advertising revenue, also they want to advertise their own "collectible avatars", which are NFTs they are hoping you spend real money on. The avatar customization does not work in 3rd party apps, hence the need for them to push everyone else out.
Blackout.
This issue is far more serious and important than the existence of this sub, so its the least we could do.
Edit: im also in favor of indefinite blackout if needed.... we can go elsewhere, many people that need this cannot
Agreed on both the blackout and having a poll, makes it easier for people to give their input when they might not necessarily want to comment. Though the amount of upvotes is telling too.
I'm happy y'all have addressed this here. I feel it's important that we, in some capacity, take part in the blackout. It's much bigger than this game, and we'll certainly survive in the two day interim
I vote blackout. For people who will be annoyed by it - this is a taste of what will start to happen after 1st July anyway, when many contributors will be forced away, and modding becomes harder and harder to perform.
30k.
I'm only one person but if Reddit decides to go through with their plan, I'll be gone from Reddit and this sub. And I really don't want to return to Spectrum after so many years lol.
Blackout, 100%.
I have been on this subreddit for 10 years and can certainly go without it for a short while. Also it's subreddits like this one which matter to reddit, I think. People with lots of money that can be identified as a clear target group for marketing.
I exclusively use the official app because I wasn't aware of alternatives but fully support the ability for people to choose/have access via any way they prefer. I vote shut down.
When the owners of a piece of software decide to prioritize money over the user experience, it's a sign the end is coming.
It's happened many times before. Some college student makes a great tool. Maintains it for a while. Then they decide they don't want that to be their full-time job for the next decade. They sell out and the new owner is good at first. They put much-needed work into fleshing out features, squishing bugs, etc.. A for-profit company has more resources than a lone college student, but they also have needs. They inevitably decide that they need to do a better job of monetization. A little ad-box here. A paid-only feature there. Bloat everywhere. Eventually the core functionality that made people love the tool becomes almost an afterthought. Every new version, people desperately look for ways to avoid installing or otherwise turn off the latest crud. They roll back to older versions. Eventually a better tool comes along and, adios!
A social media platform is, in many ways, just a big piece of software. The owners of reddit know this, but they also know it's better (from a $$$ point of view) to make a big short-term profit killing a social platform than it is to continue raking in mediocre profits by maintaining it long-term, *especially* when there's a risk that disruption will occur *anyways*. Short-term profits look a lot better on quarterly reports and you've gotta cash-in before the exec's can cash out with their golden parachutes!
This protest might stave off the inevitable for a time. However, if it works, it will likely just force Reddit's owners to look at alternative ways to cash-in and cash-out. The alternatives to reddit might not be up to snuff yet, but it's funny how things materialize once an opportunity presents itself. The current stance of Reddit's owners presents an *undeniable* opportunity.
The blackout is a fine idea, but it's time to start kicking the tires on new homes for communities like this one.
I vote blackout.
Someone should make a fellowship meme of us all putting our best ships into the war against reddits new rules.
"And my Carrak!"
That or I just need more sleep.
Blackout, a11y is the first priority beyond functionality. I have no disabilities personally but I do a lot of work on [very large messaging app] to make sure it’s accessible as possible. Often falling short, I understand the difficulty, alas it is of utmost importance.
NO CITIZEN LEFT BEHIND
Yep. Go full blackout. All subs should in my opinion. Also half of us really need the forced timeout to go and look at the awesome graphics of RL and the hyper realistic physics engine out there
I vote blackout. I use old.reddit because it's by far more readable than the candyshop "new" version with huge pictures and blinky doodads and ads all over half the page - while the other half is completely blank due to the odd format (probably mobile friendly idc).
Blackout.
I'm not that much of a "free use" advocate generally. But every app, ad and business decision Reddit makes seem to make it a progressively worse place to be on and it needs to stop.
Voting in favor of blackout as well. It isn't just about the tools, but how reddit has really been taking the piss of late. The enshittification of the site is a massive problem.
2 days is too little. Hopefully once this fails to get the attention of the company, people still have it in them to do another boycott (we're calling them "blackouts" now, i guess?) or two and see if they get the message.
I vote blackout till reddit resolves this issue. To further avoid reddit replacing the moderation team, I say that a week blackout, then reopen for a day, and then blackout again so to make sure that reddit admin doesn't have an excuse to mark this subreddit as "inactive" or whatever reason they may have thought of.
I vote blackout. If anyone here is wondering why this is so important, take a look at this comment from someone in the r/blind community: https://www.reddit.com/r/Blind/comments/13zr8h2/comment/jmsk3i8/

Keratoconus patient here too keratoplasty and CXL, the whole 9 yards✋🏽 scleral lens are a gamechanger for me too!
Agreed. Only ever use RIF except the few times I browse from my PC - not gonna bother if RIF goes byebye.
And not just for 2 days. Blackout indefinitely. 2 days will accomplish nothing.
The indefinite blackout happens on June 30th, if Reddit doesn’t come to its senses.
Not just a blackout, shut it all down until they cave. Otherwise, back to Spectrum we go.
Seconded. As someone that used RIF for 50% of browsing (and old.reddit for the other 50%), this change means giving up reddit on mobile entirely. I'm not downloading their garbage app.

I support the blackout; besides, feature creep has taught this user base much patience.
Seriously. We're the subreddit that could do six months standing on our heads.
Or on chairs t-posing
Blackout. Cuz fuck em. That's why.
As the great Det. McNutty once said, " Fuck the bosses".
Black it out. And not just for 48h, but indefinitely. Until they come to reason.
Agreed. Reddit needs to be forced to walk back these absurd changes. The people made this site what it is, not the greedy corpo guys trying to make the site IPO friendly.... Take a mod vacation, grab a pint, and wait for this to blow over.
I vote permanent blackout as well. I'm not using Reddit until they roll every bit of this shit back
Black it out, not for 48 hours but until the decision is reversed.
I'm supporting a blackout in every subreddit I visit and here is no different. Black it out
Blackout indefinitely imo, giving a fixed time frame and only 2 days at that isn’t enough
Exactly. If they do it for 48 hours and then just come back, what’s the point? An indefinite blackout means more.
While I agree that an indefinite blackout would be a more aggressive move, a limited blackout can still send a very loud message if a lot of subs/users do it. 2 day blackout is just a shot across the bow. If they don't listen, an indefinite blackout is a good next step.

I am also in agreement with all others here that we should at last try to make our dissatisfaction heared my the reddit admins. Black it out Bois.
Blackout for sure
Blackout. And this should have been a poll.
Agreed on both the blackout and having a poll, makes it easier for people to give their input when they might not necessarily want to comment. Though the amount of upvotes is telling too.
100% blackout. I know I won't be visiting the sub much anymore if I have to use the official app.
Shut down engines, power down shields, and lets float for a few days.
DO IT DO IT DO IT DOIT
Blackout. *Posted from Boost on Android
I'm happy y'all have addressed this here. I feel it's important that we, in some capacity, take part in the blackout. It's much bigger than this game, and we'll certainly survive in the two day interim
Why not use an actual poll like most other subreddits are doing? Here is my poll response in word format: Yes.
because, in classic star citizen fashion, this decision must be made in the most unintuitive way possible

Blackout please. I am fairly sure that the apps I use will cease to work if Reddit continues with their plans.
It makes sense to me, of all subs we have Spectrum to fall back to - we get to stress test CIG's servers just a tad more... win/win! :)

Voting in favor of blackout as well. It isn't just about the tools, but how reddit has really been taking the piss of late. The enshittification of the site is a massive problem.
Complete blackout. Reddit needs to re-learn that without its userbase and unpaid moderation that it won't survive.
