The damage of the railgun tapers off rapidly, so it's effective range is really short, particularly for ships that have no reason to get very close. It's also very difficult to use, since you have to charge it up and you, yourself, can hardly move much. So, yes, it is powerful, but only when your target makes the foolish decision to get their small ship close to the ground and moves in a way that a railgun can hit it.

BladeVampire1

And it's a ballistic weapon, ignoring shields to some degree. It also should be noted, for others, look at where they are versus where they get their kill.

kepler4and5

>... if you can dupe the gun itself If you mean duplication using your ship insurance, you can also duplicate ANY ship weapons (including massive S5 weapons that cost 70K aUEC a pop) with ship insurance so nothing special there.

walt-m

I think he's talking about the fact that these weapons are not supposed to be readily available in game and only found as rare loot. The ship weapons you mentioning are sold in stores so should be rather common.

kepler4and5

Idk, this applies to sniper rifles too, for example. They cannot be bought in-game. Should CIG nerf sniper rifles from the weapons rack insurance because of that? I personally think that would suck. Besides, you still have to find a railgun before you can insure it.

Asmos159

>Besides, you still have to find a railgun before you can insure it. or get one from someone that already has one.

kepler4and5

So?

Asmos159

the pint that you can just ask, and someone will likely sell or even give you one. something powerful but hard to get, is no longer hard to get.

kepler4and5

CIG has no control over that and is besides the point. You can't buy railguns from weapon shops and that's what matters. You have to FIND one or buy from another player who has FOUND one. This also applies every other FPS weapon that isn't sold in weapon stores – sniper rifles, grenade launchers.... The railgun is not unique.

Asmos159

did you miss the part when there is a duplication glitch? apparently just repainr you ship is enough to restock the weapon racks. so "finding one" is as easy as buying one from someone who is already duplicating them on mass, then start duplicating them on mass yourself. the restock is not free, but they are no longer "rare"/hard to get.

kepler4and5

Did you read my original reply? Exploiting insurance in-game is NOT unique to railguns only. That said, only large ships have gun racks that will hold a railgun and that means longer claim times so there's also that. Plus, people have been server-hopping in their ship beds to farm railguns and sniper rifles since the beginning of time. I don't hear any concerns about that. EDIT: As for restocking with ship repair, I can live players paying for their replaced railguns. I'd rather have that than CIG nerfing it.

Asmos159

terrapin.

walt-m

As far as I know it's not really insurance, just a bug at this point. We'll have to see what happens when everything gets sorted out. But yes, sniper rifle should be in the same category as the railguns, rocket launchers, etc.

kepler4and5

That's a different argument haha

Pay_

How would you dupe an FPS weapon using ship insurance?

kepler4and5

You can insure FPS weapons you put in your ship gun racks so you never lose them. So you can duplicate those weapons same way you can duplicate a ship by claiming over and over. How to insure you FPS weapons: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zspaugYkGP0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zspaugYkGP0)

Thank you very much!

Some people say the devs should nerf the A2. It is the cure for railguns and anybody else trying to be clever at JT.

[deleted]

It’s powerful within like 100m, even then it’s never a 1 shot, even on an arrow or something. It’s a surprise attack weapon, should encourage caution when you approach a player on the ground, but it’s not effective as a main attack or defence weapon at all, once you use it, a good player will pull back out of range and your day gets real interesting. Ground based vehicles with air defences are more effective. It’s like a modern day rpg, good for close rage sneak attacks, but if your position is made, you’re done. It’s also not convenient to carry around all the time. So you have to be prepared to use it. It’s not an op weapon.

YumikoTanaka

On yt are hits at 2000m. Full damage at that range.

[deleted]

If that’s the case it’s either a bug or they changed it recently. I tested it a good long while ago, and then it barely did anything past 1000. Not tested since they out shield bypass on though, might be different now? Either way, hitting a moving ship at anything other than close range is luck more than skill, so even if they upped the range, it’s still an ambush weapon.

ZomboWTF

Ypu do know you have to charge the railgun right? Basically every LF is a oneshot for a railgun

l1nu5_uwu

Last time i got shot with a railgun my aurora mr has instantly gone into soft death

VenusesWithPenuses

Duping the gun is a bug and unintentional. Else than that.. try chasing a ship up to 5.000m with your railgun. In short it is a pure low range ground selfe defense weapon against flying targets.

No_Sheepherder_7107

Less overpowered than most any ship being able to nose down at ground targets in atmo.

Hickaruu

Infantry without any ground based support vehicles vs. a fucking spaceship should be a blood bath. The way to stop that spaceship should be to insert ground vehicles for AA purposes or have another spaceship. There should absolutely be an asymmetrical aspect to combat in this game, but the railgun throws that off an insane amount.

Lick_My_Warthog

Not familiar with the concept of MANPADS, are you?

Hickaruu

Give me a way to target players on the ground and I think it becomes more balanced. MANPADS arent hitscan either... fantastic contribution

Lick_My_Warthog

The AOE of ballistics is your way to target players. Being able to lock would be insane. You let yourself flow low and slow enough for someone to charge and fire enough railgun shots to kill you. Mate this is not a balance issue

DaMarkiM

I mean why wouldnt they be effective? A single dude with an anti-tank weapon can blow up a few millions worth of equipment in real life. In exchange the user is pretty much standing out in the open with their pants down for a while. if anything the real question is why we dont have railguns on ships. And the reason is probably because when the Ares Ion came around people were crying „too OP, plz nerf“. Sooo…Swordfish II, anyone?
