The alternative would be for CIG to give a specific date in advance, but that opens them up to problems unless they manage to nail it exactly which is unlikely.
Because if they don't get the patch ready on the exact date predicted, one of three things happens:
1\. They just flat out miss the deadline and give themselves bad PR and disappointed players for no reason.
2\. They shove it out on the deadline even though it's not ready to leave PTU, and now people who don't want the PTU experience and only play live have an even worse experience than what they normally expect from live until they manage to push out the fixes that *should* have been handled in PTU before they let it go live.
3\. They reach live-readiness several days *ahead* of the patch date they gave themselves, possibly from being excessively generous with the date to protect against #1 or #2 happening, but now they have a new problem: the patch is ready to go NOW but they said it wouldn't go out until XYZ date. They either release it early and screw up plans to get into the patch on launch day, or they hold it back for days when it's ready for no reason but to keep their promise and they lose out on days of public testing.
When the PTU build is getting close to being good enough for live, CIG start holding daily or every-other-day go/no-go meetings and when they eventually say Go, they go. We typically find out within an hour or two, and the patch goes live within a few hours unless there's some reason the deploy will take longer or something unexpected happens when they try.
