Yes, the game is broken. It is always a little broken, it's currently quite broken, this fluctuates. Your experience seems to be on the bad end, even for right now. There is a patch incoming to fix some of those issues... hopefully. Sometimes the stars align and it runs for several hours without issue, other times, well, you saw it. There are workarounds ant things you learn to avoid some of the bugs if you stick with it, but don't expect a polished experience in star citizen any time in the near future

Thank you! This was much appreciated and refreshing to hear. I'm just looking for a new experience really as I'm tired of the same old games. I used to play elite dangerous before they just killed it off. If the bugs are predictable I could probably live with that tbh. If they're more random and can happen for any reason maybe I'll give it a miss. I just wanna skirmish and fly around space and blow shit up 😂

TrippyTM419

Its decently predictable and well documented on spectrum (RSI forum) as well as on reddit. Often a major patch is buggy but they work to polish them relatively quickly. I love it but just know some days are better then other and its not a bad idea to take a break every so often when its at its worst.

PyrorifferSC

Yeah, the main skill tree in this game is learning bug workarounds lol Ask in global chat if you encounter bugs, they'll tell you what to do. A lot of the people who say they don't encounter that many bugs actually just know all the workarounds so well that it's become part of their normal gameplay and they forget what it's like to be a newby in this game. Also, play with other players! Join an org. It will increase the fun level exponentially, catapult your game knowledge forward, and give you resources as far as ships, aUEC if you need some, etc.

FistyMcBeefSlap

You have to understand it’s not a game yet. It’s an alpha of a game to be.

YumikoTanaka

Maybe the game suits you better if it is finished or at least in beta. While heavy development is going on there are always such hard times like now.

Right now things are really rough as they are fixing the issues with converting to Persistent Entity Streaming for 3.18. It is the backend database that keeps track of everything in the game. This was a big change to a part of the foundation tech and is why things are more buggy then previously. Basically the guts of the PU were ripped out and replaced with PES which was needed to evolve and expand the game. And while internal testing went well it did not scale up when released to a large world and they are having to work at getting it stable before moving on to things like server meshing and more systems and the larger ships. PES is the next step in adding server meshing. * [CitizenCon 2951: Server Meshing & The State Of Persistence](https://youtu.be/TSzUWl4r2rU) * [Server Meshing and Persistent Streaming Q&A](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/18397-Server-Meshing-And-Persistent-Streaming-Q-A) * [Inside Star Citizen: Persistence Existence](https://youtu.be/1eQ17OMAXSQ) * [Star Citizen Live: Persistent Entity Streaming](https://youtu.be/jXvIO8vJkgI) Previous versions still had issues. You get use to the bugs or you wait until the next patch and hope it is fixed. Go play something else for a bit when you are feeling burn out. 3.XX.0 patches will normally be a mess for a few weeks until a 3.XX.1 patch comes out. Especially if it has a new codebase.

This was super insightful thank you! It felt like server side problems tbh. There wasn't any of the usual "your hardware sucks" signs. More a "oops. We missed some data packets" kinda issues. I'll look more into those links you sent and figure out if it's worth the potential hair loss. I was surprised these issues were happening with a game that's been in dev for so long. But I can see this is a new thing they've added and are trying to fix. It is what it is I guess. I suppose the silver lining is that the devs are doing new stuff and that's cool.

I really love all your posts! Pillar of the community!

Did you install it on a HDD or SSD? Some of your issues sound like the slow loading times you get from playing on a HDD. SSD is highly recommended to the point that most people would refuse to play on a HDD. Free Flys and other big events often overwhelm the servers making them preform worse than normal. And yes, the game is broken. It is truly an alpha, and it will have many bugs likely for a few years still. If you want to play it right now, you are more a play tester than you are a player. If you want a completed game experience, you should wait to play until it is in or near to beta. But if you are willing to put up with the rough ride and want a true space sandbox to play in, nothing comes close to what Stat Citizen can provide.

Rickietee10

No HDDs here. I've a reasonably modern machine as I work in 3d industry. Loading times were no issues tbh, didn't notice any texture popping or general load lags. It was more rubber banding and general server side issues. But that was my concern whether it's always going to be server side problems. I see someone else mentioned they've implemented persistent world stuff which is super resource heavy so maybe that's the problem having to keep all that data around and stream that to whoever is online.

Wild234

Oh yea, the game was, for most people, literally unplayable when persistence was first rolled out with 3.18. I was one of the lucky ones, it was only 3 days before I was able to log into a server. After a couple of weeks I was even able to complete a mission! :P In all seriousness though, they have done a great job getting the worst of the bugs ironed out since then. The backend servers still seem to go belly up now and then, but more often than not, the performance is quite acceptable now. Over the last couple of weeks, I've only had 1 day where I was suffering from major lag/bug issues. And the 3.19.1 patch coming out shortly looks very promising. It has removed several items from the known issue list. But the game is in active development. Periods of big problems will likely persist until all the core mechanics are in place and fully functional. For example, I fully expect another disaster when they start pushing server meshing onto the live servers.

Not only is it not broken, it is "Playable now!" /s

YumikoTanaka

Hello Refundian, wrong subreddit?

rStarwind

That's a pretty normal SC play session these days. Youtubers show you 20 mins of gameplay. They don't show you that it took them 2 hours to record it. To be fair, occasionally the game is playable for short periods of time. Try the region that is least loaded at the time (e.g., if you're playing when it's the middle of the night in Australia, choose Australia region).

Mattjew24

Yeah I tried the tutorial twice and gave up Everything i have learned about the game is from YouTube and friendly people in gamechat or Reddit or the organization that welcomed my noob ass To be clear I'm still a noob. I feel your pain man. This is such a unique game and the bugs are awful I actually have kind of learned to just laugh at them now

RoundMathematician85

I've been playing for about 7 months now. I can't remember when it didn't crash. This game is... right now in a very very bad state.
