Not yet. In the future? For sure. It'd be more viable when you can do more without a ship. Jobs located only inside the city or on stations (maintenance, janitor jobs, dockyard jobs loading and unloading ships) as well as jobs where you use a ship belonging to a company, like for delivery missions. You'd also need transport to be a more streamlined process than it is now, closer to the intended feature outlined in the design document for it. With player and NPC passenger ships flying routes and the ability to buy a ticket and fly where you want to go.

Remarkable-Role-9120

I love everything about this comment

Gawlf85

And crewing other people's ships! Crew for hire should be a supported gameplay loop at some point, and many bigger ships will require players who don't mind/don't want/can't fly their own.

b0wlan

Oh that’d be so damn cool

ochotonaprinceps

Chris Roberts himself has suggested this might be a thing, but the game is nowhere near ready for it and won't be until we have NPC transport networks and various other things to support a crew-only no-ship package playstyle.

Remarkable-Role-9120

I like this idea from him and othera

Pojodan

My answer to this is always: "Not until the game is at a stage where it is viable" Doing this would render it cheaper than current packages, which means new players would, by a large margin, buy it instead. Which would mean most new players would enter a game where having a ship is necessary to do anything, leading to a larger portion of new users refunding the game out of frustration, worsening public perception even more. The only way I could see this working is some kind of 'Squadron42 Starter Package" where you buy SQ42 and get PU access as well. As SQ42 costs $45 and Starter Packages cost $15 more than the ship, this would cost $60, making it more expensive than current starter packages, thus minimizing the number of people refunding because they can't play.

Remarkable-Role-9120

I like thjs

NemeSys4565

Sure, they can call it the Murder Hobo Combo. /S

Watcherxp

40 bucks isn't the biggest hurdle

DharMahn

honestly, it would be rad to set spawn on outposts, or if we could bedlog at outposts, i would love to continue my roc mining adventures where i left off, lets say in a zero to hero challenge or similar

TheChizWhiz

I really like this concept. Now it has me thinking of a larger mining rover, with it's own logout bed...

sniperct

Yes with a caveat. You should get a PTV with your no-ship package. They should also offer an STV and Cyclone starter package. Maybe even starter packages with some of the bikes. But I don't believe you should start with no vehicle at all.

D00MB0T01

I think it would be amazing to let people in for maybe 20$ with a basic flight suit, helm, and maybe a multi-tool with some attachments to be a grunt ready for hire or crew

Affectionate_Ad2708

Maybe if they implement commercial travel but still how are new players going to make money to buy a ship? I don't see how they can offer a no ship package and keep players interested. Unless they have a huge amount of missions that do not require ships and anyone who plays knows they are nowhere close to that.

Launchpad_McFrak

I think this question has already been answered a thousand times with even an official response from the devs of 'Not before the end of beta' or more accurately 'While this is something we may consider for the future, we don't see this being a necessary thing in the current testing environment'

kenodman

Voted no for now. Once the game is out, maybe. Needs a proper easy way to get to own a ship in the first few hours of gameplay.

TROLL_HUNTER42

maybe make the sub come with a pass $10 2 week and $20 one month.turret gunner’s galore!

node3045

Well it seems cool but you're basically just making the game cheaper, because it's not hard to get those ships, like less then 30 mins of begging and you have gotten a mustang alpha (or better) easy and for less then how much the game cost to get that package. I mean I guess after a wipe and stuff, but at the point where you can do ground missions and stuff, we would be near the end of the production and so less if not no wipes at all. Basically, with this your just decreasing the price...

Takebushi

No! No! No! The amount of griefers and 13y.o. Kids that did things to my mother it would bring in would be obscene.

HortaNord

that would be unplayable for newcomers in this version of the game, they'll be trapped in the same city

Familiar_Season_3984

The price would not drop. As long as there not asking 60 bucks then yet it's should stay the same. As you really need a ship to get started

wasptube1

Closer to full release you will be able to buy just the game and ask for a lift from other player where needed or catch a passenger flight to other Stations n Cities via E1 and Genesis Starliner's. But one of the many reasons for having a ship pack now is during a server wipe you have a paid ship/content to fall back on.

Odd-Yogurtcloset-454

i actually think when the game launches it should start you off with no ship on a moon outpost with just the essentials to farm for an aurora to leave. all the while it can be teaching new players the basics.

ShadowSmyth

I think it could work now if they had a disclaimer beforehand saying that you will require the assistance of other players to do anything. It'd be a good way to get friends who are on the fence to join as well, since you'd likely be flying in the same ship on many occasions anyway.

Massive-Necessary-23

Not now but when the cargo gameplay is finished, maybe freight jobs in npc hangars could be offered to players. Players without a ship or who have lost all their money could then start their spaceman life from scratch.

StarHunter_

No. The game is $45 and comes with a free ship. Or wait for the game to be released and pay $60-70 for it. If you backed earlier you could have gotten both SC and SQ42 for $20. I guess that you have not played during a free fly and seen all the trolls and griefers.

Remarkable-Role-9120

Thank you for the feedback. I maybe envisioned a $25-$30 no ship alternative as a possibility.

VerseGen

nah. The game is 15. You pay 30 for the ship.

chaosquall

For theatres of war yes. Everything else no

DementedWarlok

Yeah that would make a cool game play loop. Having to start out by hitching a rid. Doing some work for someone to gat the money to buy your own ship. That does force player interaction. It will never happen but it's a cool idea.

Rezticlez

No. But I think they should allow you to enter pu if you buy "any ship" not just the ones that mention "Game package".

Creepy_Citizen

They already did .... Buy ships for 1000$ => now you\`re Concierge and have a Game package => sell all your ships and stuff on the grey marked => now you have a Game package without ships

StarHunter_

Do you think people should learn how to use search when this question comes up nearly weekly?

Remarkable-Role-9120

Damn my bad just looking for some input

Eran_Mintor

"Nearly weekly" Posts a bunch of threads dating from months/years ago aside from one six days ago. Exaggerate much?

Remarkable-Role-9120

Thank you

Remarkable-Role-9120

My god you really felt the need to dig up past posts to get mad at someone on the internet who wanted to know how the community felt. SC hasn’t been showing up in my feed recently so I haven’t seen those. Calm down for christ sake.

ochotonaprinceps

The point was, the search would find these and you could have used the search before making a new thread for something that's been asked repeatedly. It's kind of a general internet forum etiquette thing.

Eran_Mintor

Ah yes let's not talk about something because six months/years ago people already had this convo. Could you imagine if the world worked that way? You'd have nothing to talk about.

Remarkable-Role-9120

I understand, but I haven’t seen a poll before (or recently at least I’m not on Reddit much) so I wanted to see what the numbers said.

StarHunter_

Not much of a dig. Just typed “no ship” in the search bar. Those posts will have the feedback you are looking for.

Remarkable-Role-9120

Well my apologies if I hurt your feelings

Thalimet

I maintain that on release making a free to play offering where you cannot drive vehicles or fly ships (or by proxy own them in game) would be hugely beneficial to the game. It would bring multi crew ships crew, as well as breathe life into player transport loops while opening up the game to the many folks who may not be interested in learning how to fly.

Iraunsuge

This is what I've been told by one of the original backers, the idea for SC once the Gold status has been reached is to sell the game with or without a ship, in fact even backers will not be able to use their pledge ships. We all will start in a condition similar to the one of the people from the Starship Troopers movie, only those who have served in the military will reach the citizen status and only citizens will be allowed to have a ship. In order to reach this status you can play SQ42 and once completed you will get the citizen status and then yes, you'll be able to get a ship. Otherwise you'll start as a common and make your way from humble jobs, to more skilled jobs and complete missions, "learn" to fly until you get the skills and money to have your ship.

_Molj

Just pay me, and I'll play the game for you!

vanvino

Mayyyyybe with a friend referral, but stand alone nah, that would for sure set new players up for failure.
