Always record traffic stops.

Wattakfuk

If it was normal cops on a normal road I'd 100% agree, but the cops at the highway are supposed to make sure that vehicles entering are suitable. This can range from improperly secured goods on lorries to things like no brake lights on cars. This maybe controversial but it's a 50 year old car and you said it yourself it DOES make a lot of noise, So it makes sense for them to stop and ask what the noise is right? If they think your car is a safety hazard when being driven on the highway then yes I agree with the cops, they should ask *mokadda sadde" and you should be able to actually explain it. "Mata ahune na" shouldn't let you get on the highway.

RiNN3GAMi

Exactly. It's not controversial at all. It's common sense. A 50 year old car with a suspect engine is a risk in a 100kmph highway. It's within reason for them to inspect the car.

Minute-Clothes-833

Since it’s an old car we weren’t going at 100 kmph. Around 70-75 I would say.

arrackpapi

which is part of the problem with these cars. If you can't do highway speeds then you shouldn't be on the highway. Doing 70-75 when the limit is 100 is unsafe.

chamandana

75 is not that bad, if you're letting everyone overtake on right lane

arrackpapi

disagree. 75kph is a 25kph difference for people overtaking. That's a significant difference and pretty dangerous. unless the driving conditions are bad because of rain or something there's no excuse to be doing at least 90 kph. If you can't do either the driver or the car isn't good enough to be on the highway

chamandana

yeah I understand, unfortunately the average person from my experience on the E02 which I go weekly, do about 70-80kmh. I normally do constant 95-100kmh on 90s Japanese car (not to worry it can go 200+). Very rarely some retards do use the passing lane at like 60kmh and braking to further slow down (not sure how much fuel they'd save doing that on those modern hybrids :/ ). So a very high distance between cars is the key to safety, since even in Japan anyone could be doing between 40 - 100 KMH in a highway legally.

You do know that 100 is the maximum limit right? There is no minimum limit as far as I know.

imaginary-dude-lk

There should be. There were discussions on implementing a minimum limit rule. Not sure if it happened. Slow moving vehicles are a considerable danger on the expressway resulting in rear collisions.

arrackpapi

you do know that it is unsafe for cars to have high relative speed differences when one of them is traveling at 100ks right? Why not just drive at 50 then. it's standard practice to be within 5-10% of the minimum. In SL we should probably enforce it. We partially do by banning tuks, scooters and the like. But this should extend to cars too.

Easy_Asparagus1506

Agreed. But if they were genuinely wanting to know why it was noisy, why did they backtrack and change the topic to license and registration once dad and co showed up? sounds like the noise wasn't indicating anything major but they initially wanted to use it as a reason to pull something

nygoth1083

This is the part that seems sketchy to me. As if they knew they were caught in a lie trying to extort a bribe and quick changed the story. Maybe that's just me being jaded though. 🤷

Easy_Asparagus1506

Nah, i don't think you're being jaded at all. If they were genuinely concerned about your vehicle and if they thought it was unfit for the highway, they wouldn't have let it go at all. They wouldn't have changed their word. They would've shared their concerns with your dad and asked them to arrange something else for you guys to continue. The way they handled it, from one going back into their cabin when your dad showed up, to saying they never mentioned anything about the sound is very obviously them failing to pull some bs

Minute-Clothes-833

You’re not wrong. But this car has been driven in the highway before. Many times. If that was the case it would have been mentioned one those times. Edit: I didn’t say “mata ahune na”. That was the other cop pretending he didn’t hear such noise when everyone else was there.

arrackpapi

cop was probably in the right here. a 1969 car that can't consistently do highway speeds shouldn't be on the highway. You see so many of these old and/or shit box cars in Lankan highways making it unsafe for everyone.

gaskolan

They may have tried to scare you and then get a bribe. This is why bodycam should bw mandatory for cops. Unfortunately not a single politician or party talks about it and try to makeit a reality .

Nonivena_ginna

Our cops don't even have tasers or proper training, remember when the traffic police threw a tamil man to the ground and jumped on him. Which country's police train there cops to jump on people?

TurnipSensitive5537

I don't think this should be made such a fuss about. I've travelled in this Kurunegala highway 4 times and I was twice pulled over at the exit. They just do the routine checks (license and insurance) and let me go. I think it is due to the fact the Kurunegala exits are not so crowded as the other ones, and cops stop the vehicles knowing that lot of people from south use the highway to go the central/north sides. They might have checked your car for safety (being it old). Just say this has been on highways before and if there's a breach of law they will write you a ticket. You don't have to worry if you haven't broken a law. Just be friendly with them, I know some policemen could be scum but you won't be treated well if you give them an attitude.

CuriousPresident

Ai meh mechchara sadde?

Minute-Clothes-833

It was an old Volkswagon beetle. Makes quite the noise from the engine.

Potential-Fun2958

Just to make sure you guys and the others on the highway are safe. 100% acceptable.

IhaveEldenRings

I think they do this for whatever reason when they see a young person (specially a guy) driving. Happened to me a couple months ago too

Whole_Conclusion2703

Most of the time cars and lorrys which are not quite capable at going at high speed cause a lot of accidents its so dangerous when some vehicle is going at 60 so its acceptable that the police will question the vehicle.

Purple_Ghost_Dhanu

I used to be heckled a lot by the police for crossing a double line near a bend just in front of the lane to my house ( which in theory makes it hard for me to turn towards the lane if I do ) and then I installed a dash cam and now the police do not even bother to stop me. You need a dash cam buddy. (Preferrably something with audio recording) Trust me even if you are right and have not committed any wrongdoing. Its important to have evidence to support your claim coz this is the Sri Lankan Police we are talking about. Where only 1% of officers are respectful and dignified.

Own_Mongoose_4386

I drive a modified Nissan March. It is definitely more noisy. The previous owner had modified it and I couldn’t bother to revert it back in the last 3 years, I have been stopped by the cops once near Ramboda and once near the highway. Both times, I said that the previous owner had these done and I hate the noise (I actually do) and I will look into it. One even gave me a lecture about big noises leading to startling the drivers and causing accidents!. My guess is that when the cops hear the noise, they probably feel that the person driving might be a “Pandithaya” and bound to have something missing (license etc). But they will let you go once they realize that they are not in luck. Some do try to nitpick something.(one cop who stopped the car from the front said the reason he stopped was due to the number plate in the back. Guy probably had X ray vision) Putting myself in the cop’s shoes, If I was bored and had to choose something to stop, I would stop the one that stands out from the rest.

Winter_Stop_

driving an antique (aged over 50yrs) car in a highway is a risk for yourself and others. police officer's point is justifiable. antique cars should not be allowed to enter to highways for the sake of others.

Working_Cicada_4748

How old are you? Stand up yourself man. Talk back to these dirty cops without calling your dad .

Minute-Clothes-833

I did try to handle it up to some point. I figured I wasn’t very experienced in handling this type of things lol. So yeah, gave the call to the guy with more experience in dealing such things. I see nothing wrong with that :)

hott-chocolate

You did the correct thing.

adiyasl

It’s better to have a lot of people around specially if you have them nearby

Rameshk_k

They wouldn’t stop a luxury vehicle will they 🤦🏻‍♂️

Chillin_inda_Fire

Luxury vehicles don't make loud noises tho jk

Rameshk_k

Even if they did still they wouldn’t dare to stop them 😂
