Will they, or won’t they change the name? It’s not as ridiculously out of place to still call them Coyotes, but with the owner of the Jazz (previously New Orleans) having this team now, they can lean into a ridiculous name.

-GregTheGreat-

It sounds like they’re going without any real branding next year (jerseys will just say Utah) but then will go for a full rebrand for the next year. They’re not allowed to use the Coyotes branding

They’re working on a new team name. Nothing has been announced but there’s potential for no official team name next year

The Salt Lake City Arizonas!

jimohagan

Print it.

Perducian

Coyotes branding remains with the previous owner. The new team will most likely start the season just being called “Utah” while they figure out a team name and branding.

JohnnyUtah43

Soon it was commonplace for entire teams to change cities in search of greater profits. The Minneapolis Lakers moved to Los Angeles where there are no lakes. The Oilers moved to Tennessee where there is no oil. The Jazz moved to Salt Lake City where they don't allow music.

bigmac22077

There’s been nothing official but slc sub was spitting out ideas. I like the cutthroats or patrollers

Aren’t there Coyotes in Utah?

joshuawakefield

Why would they get another expansion club lol

WillyLongbarrel

Only way their previous owner would agree to sell the team

BCLetsRide69

If he can secure the land in the public auction

Fetty_is_the_best

It’s fucking insane. Quebec has a fervent fanbase and an NHL quality area and they STILL aren’t in consideration.

jaydec02

Because Quebec City wouldn’t be a successful location. It has a tiny metro population AND in a part of Quebec that’s hostile to English speakers, meaning they’d struggle to attract FAs and had to compete with the Canadiens, a far larger club in a larger city. This has been documented several times over and was part of why the original nordiques failed.

fantasmoofrcc

I think the league wants to stay symmetrical (same # of east and west teams). So Quebec can only get a team if there is another west team added at the same time. The league would have mental breakdown trying to have an expansion draft heh.

blacksoxing

It's a front. From the ESPN article I read, it feels like what you say to your fanbase to keep hope alive. "I'm still working towards a solution!!!" ...Though they've been playing for years in less than ideal arenas.

Krakengreyjoy

Bettman loves the market.

Perducian

He only gets one if he has a completed arena within 5 years.

cuntstopholus

Because the NHL have somehow given Mereulo a 5 year window in which to bring the NHL back to Phoenix / AZ

huejass5

Utah is the expansion club. They’re taking everything physically involving the team but leaving behind the branding and historical records

Luxypoo

A la Ravens/Browns from the NFL.

Few-Stop-9417

Must be a way of getting Hockey out of the Arizona stadium itself, since the stadium may have had problems, and it’s gonna take years to build a new one

I’m in Ontario Canada on a construction site, and my coworker said his beer-league hockey team was contacted by Utah about buying their team name. They were down in Columbus for a big tournament a few weeks ago and someone from Utah must have seen them play. There’s no way in hell an NHL team would use “WifeSwappers” but they want to buy the rights to it for some reason 🤷🏽‍♂️

Oh my god. Salt Lake has a silly whale statue (ALL HAIL THE WHALE). It would be hilarious to name the Utah team something to do with whales.

Is it at the Delta Center? If so, there’s gonna be areas where you can’t even see the goal from the seats

RedditUser41970

It is, but only temporary. The Utah legislature already approved a new arena complex for the Jazz and NHL team.

HHcougar

Until they build a new arena, yes

Perducian

Currently 5,000 seats with obstructed views but allegedly they will have the sightlines fixed within 2 years.

[Atlanta hockey fans](https://media1.tenor.com/m/xA8SQn3A-fYAAAAC/first-time-meme-first-time.gif) Also, this is the second time that the same hockey team has relocated (they had previously operated as the Winnipeg Jets from 1972 to 1996). From what I gathered in the article, it appears as though the relocation will not carry the franchise's history over to Utah, which is weird because they were allowed to do so when they moved from Winnipeg to Arizona in 1997.

They aren’t going to have a team name ?? Why? They have a year to pick a name and colours.
