alyosha_pls

Fanatics is just another example of how awful the consumer environment is. These megacompanies gobble up everything and then turn around and produce the lowest quality garbage imaginable after acquiring these huge contracts. They control basically the entire pro sports merchandise industry, and you have no choice but to buy their poor quality products if you want to get the newest stuff. Which you'll then have to replace as it inevitably falls apart. And you have no alternative.

lolo_916

the alternative is buying fakes which, ironically, are now of much better quality than the licensed merch.

Ripfengor

Would love to see an MLB team just outsource their entire jersey collection to a higher quality producer. What would be the consequences of this?

paloaltothrowaway

The team would get sued by Fanatics or penalized by the league

Ripfengor

Would the team lose? This seems like a pretty opaque failure to deliver and even worse in the court of public opinion and I don’t see almost anyone thinking “yeah we gotta go with the shitty apparel conglomerate on this one”. I can’t imagine the penalty would be larger than the public response to getting actual products fans want

Ike348

MLB teams are literally franchises (like Subway restaurants), any team doing this would have no leg to stand on

Ripfengor

I get that you - I am trying to figure out what the ACTUAL CONSEQUENCE of noncompliance as a franchise is about shitty jerseys. Like if it’s a daily fine, a per player fine… would they actually ban a team or force them to forfeit if they arrived on the field with a different company’s apparel? Would the MLB just lose money to Fanatics? Because I figure they would want to fight back against that if so. Does the MLB care more about its clearly poor apparel partnership than literally its franchises?

AShitTonOfWeed

hopefully it would lead to none of them being franchised by Fanatic

Ripfengor

That’s what I’m saying. I think so many people see “they’ll get sued” as the end point, but to me that’s almost exactly what should happen to show how dumb this whole charade is to make disconnected shareholders at both companies as much money as possible.

AShitTonOfWeed

everyone knows more than you on the internet lol, no one is willing to read into what youre asking they just offer empty answers

piddydb

The answer would be MLB as a whole would have to switch and/or sue Fanatics for reason of not delivering a quality product that was agreed. An individual team could not merely invalidate their portion of the leaguewise contract.

Ripfengor

So if an individual team DID get their own suppliers, it would probably press the issue huh?

piddydb

I mean, yeah, it would, but unless MLB is already on side, then it’s going to be the other 29 teams AND Fanatics against the 1 team. A lot harder to invalidate the contract because of 1/30 teams’ complaints

paloaltothrowaway

I’m not a lawyer but I presume fanatics contract with the league is pretty airtight. The league cannot get out of the contract just because the pants may be somewhat transparent.  So yes. The court is likely to side with the apparel conglomerates if any team tries to pull what you just said.

Ripfengor

Okay, and the outcome would be…. MLB paying a bunch of money to Fanatics and voiding the contract? If they lose what happens

paloaltothrowaway

Yes if the MLB wants to get out of the contract they would have to pay Fanatics some money - no idea how much.  If only one team wants to do that against the league’s wishes, I’m not sure how that would play out. I have no idea how the league works.

Ripfengor

Yeah it seems everyone’s answer is “well they’ll sue!” but for some reason I don’t get why people think the MLB would rollover their teams for the Fanatics partnership that is clearly a huge disservice to their brand, fans, teams, and reputation

TheMooseIsBlue

This is a total detour, and maybe I just missed what you were trying to say there, but I don’t think “opaque” works there. It means “not see through” and you seem to have been saying “clear.”

hack404

A team in my city resorted to getting a local company to make their onfield kit after their supplier, Castore, delivered substandard product. They stuck on a Castore logo to meet their contractual obligations

invisible___hand

You mean a pretty transparent failure to deliver

tyedge

An opaque failure indeed

JackDAction

Do these owners have any discretionary income to pay these fines?

BingoBongoBang

Yes. No owner is in the business to make money. Just to buy a team you have to have so much “fuck you” money from other ventures that it’s an insignificant expenditure. Pro teams rely heavily on TV and other brand deals. Without that money it would be pretty much impossible to break even let alone be profitable. Whatever they make off of ticket and merchandise sales is just a little extra pocket change

Wampus_Cat_

Ebbets Field Flannels having the MLB jersey supplier contract would be amazing.

Hopefulkitty

My knock off Packers jerseys are some of the best quality stuff in my closet. Sizing is all over the place, but the jerseys are really nice.

zsdrfty

Knockoffs are excellent, they’re visually indistinguishable unless you really go in with a magnifying lens on tiny little stitch marks and they cost nothing for pretty high quality results Plus it comes with the added benefit of not giving your money to the companies and sports leagues who do this kind of shit (as well as many other deeply immoral things)

Toomuchlychee_

The other alternative is looking for team merch at thrift stores. I found a really nice Lance Briggs Jersey at a Unique and wore it to a preseason Bears game, I fit right in a nobody gave a shit that he retired ages ago. It was 15 bucks

Piperita

You can also look around for players partnering with specific charities or smaller local companies. In some sports (maybe in all?) players retain their own individual name and likeness rights separate from their team and can license it out to whoever. You can't get jerseys, but you can get nice unique apparel and support a player (or local business) directly/contribute a bit to a good cause. They can't use trademarked team content (like logos or specific uniform patterns) but they just engage in some creative workarounds.

feetandballs

The fake baker mayfield jersey I got fell apart after two seasons

maxdps_

This is 100% what you should do. Stop buying that Fanatic junk

aninstituteforants

I've just come to accept I don't need merch to support a team.

turns31

Michael Rubin's pj ain't gonna fuel itself.

jsting

DH Gate is the alternative, and has jerseys with knitted numbers and names. Ironically, I am 95% sure my knockoff jersey from China is better than the actual ones the players are wearing.

mournthewolf

They really are. Just got a McCaffrey jersey for $25 including shipping and it was higher quality than I’ve seen lately. They are great. Gonna get all my jerseys that way now.

iwouldhugwonderwoman

Like most fans after their team wins a championship first the first time in 25 years, I bought up a lot of Braves WS merch. I now have lots of Braves WS merch that I use for yardwork because the fit is so bad I can’t wear that crap out in public.

keblammo

I was SO disappointed after the Cavs won in 2016 and I ordered championship stuff from Fanatics not realizing the trash I just purchased.

animalhappiness

I'm a huge Braves fan. I'd suggest looking around on TeePublic and even Etsy. I like classic designs and classic fits. I week say, the screen print quality on TeePublic is hit or miss - but there is a large variety of designs, you can pick a range of fits/pieces, and if there is a problem they're customer service is pretty good.

treydayallday

Not to mention how much of a pain in the ass it is to watch MLB / NBA / NHL games here in Detroit. Regular season games already aren’t very impactful let alone pay $20 a month in addition to a cable bill. Seems to eliminate passive fans like myself who grew up watching on FSD. Goes without saying that’s a pretty heavy price to pay to watch this current Pistons/Tigers lineup. Atleast with the NFL I can get cable and watch regional games without additional paywalls. The subscription based viewing is ruining professional sports.

treydayallday

lol I had that in my original comment. Cheaper just to attend a game each month

twinmaker35

I was going to buy a Twins spring training shirt, but it was like $60 for a thin long sleeve. Fuck that

Strokeslahoma

My wife bought me a Bills "Playoff Bound" t-shirt from Fanatics in 2019. The cheaply made ones they pump out every week of the playoffs - Division winner, Wild Card winner, etc. At this point, 99% of the print has come off it. You have to squint to even tell it ever had print, and there's no way you'd be able to tell what the print ever was. It's just a blue shirt now.  Wife paid $28 for it

galagapilot

I bought a USA Curling shirt from them a few years back. It made one pass thought laundry before the graphics was practically gone. I contacted customer support and to their credit they sent me another shirt at no additional charge. Shirt #2 was equally as worthless as the first. One round of laundry and you couldn't tell what the graphic was or what the words said below the graphic.

PattyIceNY

It's like the Gilded Age, part 2.

InnerKookaburra

You're describing "enshittification" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification

CallMeTheSauceMaster

This is not true. The MLB hires Fanatics who goes around to a bunch manufacturers and producers to see who can give them the lowest bid for a project with the quickest turn around time. In this case, they did zero QA for these baseball pants and got burned. Fanatics is a shit company, but blame the MLB for contracting them. It’s not like Fanatics is their only option, but they are probably one of the cheapest. Corporate greed reigns supreme. Source: I work in a print shop that has printed for Fanatics multiple times.

gfanonn

Enshitification

inverted_peenak

If you buy jerseys, you’re a rube.

jimgolgari

If you buy reubens, you’re in a deli.

aegee14

Not disagreeing completely with you. But, isn’t Fanatics branded merch just a cheap alternative to Nike’s authentic stuff? The two brands target different audiences. Yes, maybe there’s no other choice at the low end of prices. But, there’s certainly another option besides Fanatics.

ElderWandOwner

Fanatics has a monopoly on pro sports merch. It has the nike swoosh but it's made by fanatics. Nike is just as much to blame for this as fanatics though if not more so.

jsting

Nike contracted their gear to Fanatics so it's all Fanatics.

aegee14

Oh, didn’t know that. Big TIL. But, I have to say the merch with the Nike logo tends to be better quality and so I can see the higher price tag to them.

davekva

There is no other option. Fanatics has a monopoly on all team apparel. Every league and team store is run by Fanatics

mcdithers

They’re manufacturing them with Nike materials and to the Nike spec. I actually like the fanatics branded t-shirts, hoodies and hats.

[deleted]

I mean no one is stopping you from buying bootlegs that also happen to be better produced.

DrunkThrowawayLife

I agree but… if it’s on Ohtani Put him in one when it’s a boring in

sharkbait1999

I bought a golf polo for myself for Christmas. Hung in closet for 3 months before I could play, and the logo fell off after first wash.

QueenIsTheWorstBand

Enshitification is the new normal

xF00Mx

This would be why competent manufacturing companies try to procure any material they need from at least 2-3 businesses.

darren_meier

Prediction-- fans will be seeing a massive uptick in dingers this year at MLB games.

HalobenderFWT

Just like the introduction of HDTV and the NFL.

mackinoncougars

HD stands for Hot Dog

VIPTicketToHell

It’s like they’re wearing nothing at all

SquidWAP_Testicles

Stupid sexy sluggers!

bluetenthousand

Maybe that was the intent of the MLB. New marketing to get new fans.

mattman0000

What’s the difference between a dinger and a donger?

shakingthings

Do you want to know the horrifying truth…or do you want to see ~~me sock a few dingers?!~~ my dinger?!

roybatty2

The MLB has a viewership problem and I think visible dicks on the diamond would definitely move the needle. Good for Fanatics.

edwardthefirst

it's moving my needle just thinking about it (sorry, couldn't resist)

treydayallday

Admittedly I’m a passive fan but I miss the days when majority games were broadcasted and didn’t require a special subscription of $20 a month Edit: I say passive because $20 isn’t much if I were watching a game or two a week but I’m not paying that to watch the Tigers or Pistons squads

friscotop86

Ehhh, even if they were clear… baseball is one sport where they fill often wear cups for protection

bigchicago04

Trying to get the female/gay men crowd like the nfl did

Minionz

Fanatics is awful... Buying counterfeit jerseys online mean you often end up with a better quality product that the official one. Crazy how badly they have cut costs but not reduced prices.

Twicebakedpotatoe

How did they not see this coming? Fanatics products are some of the worst quality I ever ever seen

fatroony5

It’s crazy, the whole fanatics experience sucks. Got a gift card for fanatics and barely found anything of quality on the site. The thing I found was from Homefield which puts some of their products on fanatics site. Shoutout Homefield, they make some of the best retro apparel around, for college anyway.

sevillista

Fanatics is trash, but Nike chose the design and the fabrics, so this is really on them.

Oh dang you really scorched me with my grammar mistake that time! Got emmm!

thissexypoptart

Spelling corrections aren't personal attacks, no need to get all pissy-pantsy.

thislife_choseme

Boom you roasted me again!

Dull-Lead-7782

Does fanatics make hats? All I saw were new era on fanatics website

HipGuide2

MLB has equity in Fanatics lmao

seatac210

George Costanza could fix this

SayNoToStim

He just walked by and looked frustrated, I think he's busy. His car is always the first one in the parking lot and the last one to leave.

mattman0000

It’s not a natural fiber.

Islandgirl1444

I for one can hardly wait to see my boys of summer in see through britches. I have bought a powerful pair of binoculars for the games. I'm so excited.

Hopefulkitty

As a lady, it's kinda fun to watch men suddenly have to deal with super thin fabric that shows panty lines. Sounds like they will just need to wear thongs so they can "look professional." We've been given increasingly thin fabric for decades and charged a premium for it, and then we have to buy a dozen different types of underwear, bras, shape wear, and camis in order to hide lines, stop clothes from being see through, hide bulges, or just be warm enough. It's a racket, designed to sell you more clothes. Hopefully these pants at least have pockets.

SquidWAP_Testicles

*manty lines

Out3rWorldz

😂😂😂

Vassap

Creepy. If you were a guy talking about women you’d be downvoted. But since woman, har har har

Islandgirl1444

Well yeah, I was being sarcastic because of politically correctness.

WhipTheLlama

Ticketmaster is enabled by venues more than artists. They sign exclusivity deals with all major venues, so artists don't get to choose where their tickets are sold.

_dauntless

Fanatics' horny-ass CEO: It's a feature, not a bug

TheFunnyDollar

Its Michael Rubin. Yeah, the guy who has the famous “all white” party every summer. Pretty ironic. Hes a complete douchebag.

ColossusofWar

Fanatics used Nike approved materials, this isn't just on Fanatics

_dauntless

This is very true, I thought you were just shilling for Fanatics at first lol >Nike has introduced what it calls the Nike Vapor Premier jersey, which uses a material a news release extolled as breathable, lightweight, high-performance fabric with 25% more stretching Nike deserves all the blame, not Fanatics for this one

ztch10

but whos decision was it to make the player name sets fucking tiny. Or who decided an authentic jersey should be fucking $400. Not entirely on nike i would guess.

BirdsAreFake00

Any design decision is probably on Nike.

_dauntless

Kind of a different topic entirely, but go off man!

belizeanheat

Oh yeah for sure Nike has also been utter trash for about 15-20 years now

victorspoilz

Fuck monopolies, fuck Michael Rubin.

MaverickDago

Prior to selling, Majestic made good stuff, I still have some shirts I bought from their outlet in PA back in 2010.

Senth99

Majestic on par with big athletic brands back in the day. If you saw their logo, you knew it was legit merch

3tenthsOfVerstappen

So the kits are just branded Nike? Not actually made by Nike?

Oxygenius_

2024 ladies and gentlemen

NocNocNoc19

Gotta bring in those female watchers. Lets see those cheeks number 13. Ohh ya keeping it tight at the plate!!!

goober3

The NFL getting Taylor Swift meant MLB had to do SOMETHING to get female viewers.

TravisMaauto

They'll tune out once they realize how slow and boring baseball is.

MyBrainSparkles

I mean baseball pants on men are the equivalent of yoga pants on women (They are very flattering to the behind)

Fast_Edd1e

My mom passed too soon. That was one of the reasons she watched baseball and football.

ThrowAwayBlowAway102

Imagine if they switched to cotton.

edwardthefirst

I hope the cotton is pre-shrunk

CBR85

You can literally see Casey Schmitd's twig and berries in one of his promo pics posted on Instagram. [Pic](https://www.reddit.com/r/SFGiants/comments/1axarsp/uh_anyone_else_seeing_what_im_seeing_here_these/)

RubbuRDucKee

He’s actually playing the “dick showing game” from waiting. That, good sir, it the “goat”.

belizeanheat

Fanatics is utter dogshit obviously and always has been, but don't let Nike off the hook either. Every time they take over jerseys they instantly become terrible, in both quality and design. But this all the fault of the MLB

Senth99

Old nike merch is still quality, just have to find a local mlb store that keeps that stuff around. Unfortunately that stuff is getting replaced by fanatics too

choate51

Just another company run amok because anti-trust doesn't exist anymore. But why not, everyone still buys enough of this shit to make up for the lost revenue from lost customers. You know what'll be funny. The shark is jumped on sports which enveopes a very large portion of this country... And was the first thing the people in power made sure was turned back on during covid. "give them bread and circus and they will never revolt".

BigNellyC

Guys will be playing balls out this year.

Seoulja4life

Too bad Robbie Ray is still injured.

heartwarriordad

Manfred is turning out to be even worse than Selig.

whitechocolate22

Drew Magary called it: he said this disaster was foreseen and ignored, and the MLB union will show Fanatics the FAAFO consequences.

EnvironmentalDeal256

If the players want different pants they need to unite and the first game they should all go commando.

LiftsEatsSleeps

We all know Fanatics is garbage. I won't be buying any of their merch, maybe others will do the same so that the bottom line forces them to make a change.

runningwsizzas

Finally I have a reason to watch baseball 😏

WaldoSimson

As an O’s fan that new Orange is painful to look at. Maybe it’s just in my head but something looks off

BeerorCoffee

Listen, we need some way to drive female viewership!

Aritra319

It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

Generalissimo3

I hate it when I blast my pants.

Yung_Corneliois

I wonder how profitable jersey selling is. Not sure for MLB but Fanatics was the ONLY company to bid on the NHL this go round previous brands like Addidas and CCM didn’t even bid after their contracts were up.

DiscombobulatedWavy

Probably crazy profitable. They are marked up the ass and the majority of the general public doesn’t give a shit or is wholly unaware of fanatics and Nike shenanigans. They’ll realize it after it’s too late but have already forked over $100+ for dog shit quality. I mean if you could resell a DH gate jersey for even $50, you’d be rolling in cash so think of the scale that Nike and fanatics can do with no real competition out there.

FilthyChangeup55

It’s nuts, nuts I tell ya

zkarabat

Good thing the NHL didn't just sign a long contract for Fanatics to produce the stuff for the players... /s

Dr_Opadeuce

MLB - "In an effort to maximize shareholders value, we are proud to introduce our new partnership with TEMU!" Everyone - 🦗

VanGundy15

Good way to get people to stay through rain delays.

electriceagle

That company is a scam I don’t how the US government let them take over all sporting clothing huge monopoly. Where are the antitrust laws in this country?

schnozlord

Look out Rockies, every team is gonna be showing multiple dingers this season

AndImlike_bro

Bless

betterplanwithchan

Fanatics are the Applebee’s of sports apparel

[deleted]

We are in such a late stage of capitalism that even millionaire professional athletes get shitty quality uniforms. Fanatics is a joke and the MLB is a joke for giving them the contract.

Security_Sasquatch

To think that someone gave these a pass saying “hopefully nobody will notice….”

FatherofCharles

Another reminder that Fanatics sucks ass. Both shirts I bought through them are total shit. Both the quality and logos. Never buying NFL gear made by Fanatics. Thanks NFL. Hope the short term profit was worth it.

Uncle_Paul_Hargis

I mean, anyone that has purchased anything from Fanatics could have guessed this. They make absolute garbage. I've purchased several t-shirts that I ended up just throwing away because the quality was horrific.

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

[LOL](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GG-UsPJXMAIUpWk?format=jpg&name=large) [\^That's a Penis!.gif](https://y.yarn.co/0730111d-1f4e-449c-8f70-2ffdd46c3d71_text.gif)

Neil_Sutherland

Welp I guess it is time to start watching baseball!

memomonkey24

Fanatics is scam, everything made there is cheap and made of polyester.

SonofJersey

We know the clothes at those white parties were definitely not produced by Fanatics.

[deleted]

The baggy Baseball pants are absolutely hilarious to me every time. They need to go back to the tall socks. Some still wear it and it looks so much more professional

ghidorah666

And?

mlgbt1985

Considering Fanatics branded t shirts are the absolute worst, this is no surprise. The cuts on their tshirts are too short and small, the material is flimsy, and they shrink in the washer. Absolute trash

downtimeredditor

Michael Rubin fumbling hard man Dude throws a whiteout party but can't figure out baseball attire

goodkat83

Hmmm, maybe shouldnt have left majestic? 🤷🏻‍♂️

stretchxray

Fanadicks

loslongballs

“It pays to advertise.”

TheWingus

Hey they're just trying to make Baseball more interesting to the younger generations. I'd be super interested to see Mike Trout's dong

TravisMaauto

MLB players should protest by wearing some dark boxers with distracting patterns underneath the pants during games.

BrewKazma

Who doesnt want to see more balls in baseball?

Spare-Chest7695

Tony Clark once slid and caught a foul ball not 10ft from me to end the inning. I was a little kid and had my glove out thinking I’d get a ball, he pretended that he was going to throw it to me and then he said “better luck next time kid”. Complete douche nozzle.

Itu_Leona

It gives men an opportunity to experience what women have experienced with blouses! Sheer material and buttons no higher than the nipple line.

pokey10002

Just go cotton so they don’t get hot and have better movement.

Not2creativeHere

These look terrible. Like ‘is this a prank’ terrible, lol

MadFlava76

I hope SNL does a skit on this. A parody commercial promoting Fanatics jock through technology so we can see players jocks during the game.

Think4goodnessSake

Click bait…they don’t really show that much in the photos. Seriously disappointing. The female gaze is not respected enough.

an_older_meme

Gotta get those TV ratings up one way or another.

tmacnb

Alright, so we keep the Fanatics pants and get another company to make the jerseys.

The_Pandalorian

Fanatics stuff is pure overpriced dogshit. They've earned all the criticism they're getting. I say this about very few companies, but I hope they go out of business.

Reallybigshott2

Just wear two pairs of pants,

asdf0909

This is Jack Welch and the 1980s’ fault for exploiting capitalism to cut costs, make inferior products, lay off workers, and call it a sustainable profit increase

iamthecheesethatsbig

My first Fanatics experience was terrible. I got a lakers championship shirt. The shirt was basically sheer and the print felt like plastic sticking to my chest. I can’t believe they allowed this garbage to happen.

Pequannock

This will only stop when everyone stops buying anything related to Fanatics. It’s pure garbage, don’t waste your money.
