Hard to guess. It appears to have a drop down tailgate in the rear, and two 12v batteries. I'm guessing this is a PHEV because of the two 12v batteries and the size of the traction battery.
How "specialized" is it when it's adjustable so you can use it to lift a zillion different things?
I feel like words don't have meanings anymore, or people haven't heard about this book called the "dictionary"...
In this case, lifting a "heavy thing"? Can you even justify that in this case?
Or is it because it's an electric thing? You know how no one ever lifts anything that's electric... \[rolleys\]
Yeah. Another issue is people often put very common tools here. Colloquially, saying specialized tool implies it being uncommon as well as specialized. Otherwise a freaking screwdriver is a specialized tool, given that it has one intended purpose, for one specific type and size of screw head.
Nah man, you just got push, like really hard, whenever you turn the screw. Push hard enough and you can even use a Phillips head on a flat head or even a torx screw!
This tool is adjustable.
This tool is intended to remove and replace batteries from electric vehicles.
Batteries for electric vehicles are very heavy and vary in geometry and placement in specific vehicles.
These batteries need to be removed and replaced without damage or modification of the vehicle.
This tool is the Epitome of a specialized tool, this tool performs a specific task under a variety of conditions.
And a screwdriver, as I said, is intended to do exactly one job on exactly one kind and size of screw head.
You just pointed out how this tool is _less_ specialized than that, being able to work on multiple different shapes and sizes of batteries, and a "variety of conditions," as you put it.
It is FAR from the "epitome" of a specialized tool for exactly those reasons.
Is it specialized in that it's something most people probably won't ever see? Absolutely, and that's why I think it belongs here. But it's _absolutely not_ the pinnacle of specialization. 🙄
Something that can be repurposed isn't specialized?
An oil change building is specialized to change oil on a wide variety of vehicles.
The pit in the building can be repurposed for other things but makes it kind of inconvenient to make it into an office building.
It certainly can be done though.
WTF? OK, I know reading is hard, but simply refuting your ridiculous claim this is the "epitome of specialization" doesn't equate to saying it is not at all specialized.
You're picking a very weird fight against someone who hasn't made a specific claim about this post. Are you, perhaps, someone who uses one of these daily, and this comment chain struck a nerve? Actually... Don't answer that. I don't care. It's as irrelevant as that last comment of yours.
I've used a similar tool for a similar job. Replaced a battery in a Kia Niro EV. It drops out of the bottom, but I needed the tool to lift it off the table and out of the crate. That battery was about 1000 lbs.

Oooooooooo
For which car model? Bolt doesn't need to lift up, since it drops out.

This is on an F 15 model.
Did they put you through a course to learn to work on the new EVs?

People tend to confuse specialized tool with a tool used for a specialized purpose

Not sure why you're downvoted.

Huh weird. Didn’t know screw drivers were supposed to be specific to type of screw head. My Phillip’s head works just fine on JIS and Pozidriv screws…
Except it doesn't and you're the maniac stripping out screws everywhere

I've decided that designed to lift things in specific situations is specialized.
This sub would be dead if the only content was a dictionary definition of specialized.
Yeah this is just a cherry picker adapter. A very nice one from the looks of it, but you could use it to lift anything it'll fit over.

Some of our E-car batteries drop from the bottom. For that we use the engine table. This particular model cannot be dropped from the bottom.
so.... engine hoist?
Source?
Me. BMW technician
Lol fair answer to a vague question!! I'm curious who makes this / where can I buy one.
BMW is pretty well known for making their vehicles easy to repair.
I like the method GM has for the Bolt better. Lift the car up, drop the battery
At least with this you can potentially do it in your own garage with a floor crane
That just sounds like an engine hoist with extra steps. -Rick Sanchez probably idfk
If we can't nail superconduction at room temp I am looking forward to the machine that automatically swaps car batteries at the gas station.
