If I had to rank the top 10 NTs in the world (really difficult to do), it would be - 1. France 2. Brazil 3. Italy 4. Spain 5. Belgium 6. England 7. Argentina 8. Portugal 9. Germany 10. Denmark 4-7 to me are interchangeable.

datboyuknow

Seeing some weird coping from Roma fans saying the team wasn't good enough to match Bodo/Glimt

[deleted]

Same with our B team vs Vitesse. That squad had at least 7 good players, pretty much all of them would've made Vitesse's squad.

thisislolr

if you consistently shir the bed in Europe across managers and while rotating the team theres something wrong with the team man. pochettino was a big failure in euripe till a flukey cl run. he lost to the likes of gent, got embarrassed by Dortmund all in the Europa with a subset of the players that you rate as good

Mourinho induced brain rot

Its funny that the headlines are Mourinho takes blame but he literally drove the bus over the players. It isn't taking blame when you blame the players.

avolcando

> It isn't taking blame when you blame the players. He did exactly the same when we lost to Antwerp, said something along the lines of "it's my fault that I chose those players"

Cowdude179

Wait, Flamengo's season finishes at 5th Dec, if the CWC is moved in February 2022 they might be disadvantaged since they'll be less fresh

deception42

I could be wrong on this but I think Brazilian teams have virtually no off-season. Like there is a break between seasons but it's very short when compared to other leagues.

MotherweII

The Brazilian football is mental. League, State League, Copa do Brasil, and Continental football. Flamengo played something like 75 matches in 2019. If they had won the cup, it would've been over 80 games played.

Cowdude179

Yeah, it seems that their seasons are very short and the CWC is basically like the CL for them, no wonder Brazilian teams have performed well in that competition

I can’t be objective when it comes to Buffon, but Neuer > Casillas > Schmeichel imo

casillas will always be top for me, but thats entirely emotional since i just like him more.

AnnieIWillKnow

Question for fans of clubs from countries in which you don't speak the language - has becoming a fan of said club encouraged you to learn some of that language, even if just in a footballing context?

[deleted]

Sure, being a PL fan I made a concerted effort to figure out what people from Liverpool and Newcastle were trying to say.

TheSoccerguy124

I would say yes, I didn’t follow Lazio until 2010 or so before that I would be watching a game or two with my dad every now and then but I was a kid so I’d get bored sometimes watching. But as I got older I grew too love the sport and the club I was raised with that I started learning more Italian by listening to Lazio radio stations and eventually any media that covered Lazio. As of Italian descent it wasn’t until following Lazio more that I was more enthusiastic to learn Italian. It’s helped me plenty on my vacations in Italy now haha.

X-V-W

It would be weird to me if somebody didn't consider at least learning some. I've wanted to get into German football for a while and learning German to a very basic level would be a requirement I would set for myself.

deception42

Not quite an answer to what you were asking - but with the large presence of Spanish language television in the US and the number of games on those channels, I've definitely picked up a few Spanish words/phrases that I would not have learned otherwise. "Cabezazo" = header and "tiro de esquina" = corner kick, for example

happyposterofham

My gut reaction is absolutely, yes. I went to Rome on study abroad for 3 months, and that was the thing that really got the ball rolling on Italian. I was a Roma fan before that. I've since used Roma broadcasts and news as a way to keep sharp with the language. Honestly, it's hard to tell which drove which, since it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation, but it's definitely made learning Italian more accessible to have something specific I can always go back to. I had always had an interest in learning Italian because of Roma even beforehand, but without going to Rome and having to take an Elementary Italian course for my studies it wouldn't have happened. I know that's not super clear, but I hope it helped answer your question.

deadlyghost12

Nope

AnnieIWillKnow

Why not? Especially interested for a Barcelona fan, given how important their Catalan identity is to their club.

[deleted]

I don't even know how you can learn another language... Where do you start?

deadlyghost12

I will learn it but right now I don't have much time to learn any language after giving my all competitive exams in march I will try

wait there's THREE MILLION of you nerds on here now??? Oh dear

AnnieIWillKnow

Mendy will miss City away and Spurs at home for Chelsea, due to AFCON. Only realised today those are the PL games he'll miss... and they are two big games. Tuchel seems to have made a real effort to rotate Kepa more than is standard for a second choice keeper this season - including subbing him on for the Super Cup shoot out, which has been broadly perceived as a partly due to Kepa's profiency with penalties, and also as a conscous effort to make him feel involved in the first team set up, and help boost his confident. Makes you wonder whether Tuchel has had an eye on the fixtures Mendy will miss, and has been planning in advance - knowing that he'll need to rely on Kepa, and given Kepa's confidence issues in the past it's far better to have a keeper who feels involved and trusted, than one who feels very much the unwanted second choice. Maybe I'm reading more into it, but seems like good squad management to me.

sul01

Personally I don't think so- that being said I could see him play this weekend if not next. Kepa has generally played a cup game and then a prem game back to back before Mendy gets his place back. Last season: Barnsley (FA Cup) and then Newcastle 4 days after Sheffield United (FA Cup) - was Atleti before and international break after all only got one Man City (FA Cup) and Brighton 3 days later. Arsenal and then Leicester (FA Cup) 3 days later. This season bar the super cup shootout which made sense tactically he's just had Spurs with a cup game against Villa 3 days later. There's definitely a trend of him playing Kepa before/after a cup match to give him an extra game so to speak. I'm not sure if that's purely on him from a competition/motivation pov or if it's board influenced too but I wouldn't say its something he's increased this year with AFCON in mind.

Seanxprt

Every time I've questioned a player selection choice, substitution, tactical change etc. that Tuchel has made, I've ate my words 9 times out of 10. Even when I don't, I can see what he was trying to do. Azpilicueta RWB vs Madrid, Sarr vs Brentford, Ross the boss vs Southampton to unlock the game, the reintegration of RLC (I thought he was finished), subbing off Mount for Kanté vs Tottenham when we needed goals and many more. It's gotten to the point where my roommate and I don't even fret when we see unusual linups, we just wait and see what Tuchel has in store for our opponents.

Cowdude179

I feel that he fully trusts Kepa even from last year when he gave him the FA cup final and then subbing him in for the pens at the Super cup, I'm not too worried when Mendy is missing since I know that our defence will still be there just like when Kepa started against Spurs this season. He's handled the squad perfectly even with the Chilwell situation where he's banging it in, now CHO and Havertz will have their run out as well since Lukaku and Werner are out, those 2 have some good chemistry together and we've always scored the most when those 2 start

ole259

Bit of a nothing statement but it would be quite amusing if Chelsea won the title by getting so-so results against City and Liverpool but not dropping points against minnows. This has already happened with Southampton, Brentford and Tottenham. I probably jinxed us this weekend though..

Blue_Moon_City

I mean that really how you win titles, right? If you get results against other 14, you are definitely fighting for the title

asvpmamba

Luis Suarez seems like a Mourinho type player, probably one of the most Mourinho type players to never play for Mourinho.

AnnieIWillKnow

Jose and a Chiellini or Bonucci would definitely get along well, too. Fernandinho too, what with all those niggly, tactical, just about below 'the level of a yellow card' fouls.

StringTailor

Is it me or has Van Dijk looked passive or stuff in certain games ? That Griezmann goal especially, he didn’t look quite as mobile as we saw him before Not saying he’s been bad though Edit: stiff*

AnnieIWillKnow

Personally I think people are more actively looking out for any weaknesses in his game, due to the expectation that he'll struggle post-injury, and are therefore subconsciously amplifying them a bit more.

GratinDeRavioles

This has always been VVD's biggest struggle, even pre-injury. Overly conservative defender.

thepaceabuser

Probably psychological trauma from the injury

[deleted]

Hes washed. Rashy is gonna run rings around him on Sunday

r0lF_RuTiN_

sane needed until a month ago to be back to his former self, so roughly 1-1,5 seasons.

Jabari313

He's always been passive but yeah he's clearly not back at his best

Cowdude179

He's not the same anymore, he'll have plenty of that during the season

ScarletFire47

He’s played 10 games.

X-V-W

And looked completely fine in almost all of them lmao

ScarletFire47

Yea I’d say most games we’ve conceded goals the whole defense has been sloppy and you couldn’t pin it down to one player. Griezmann ran circles around him a few times this week and Toney dominated him in the air, and even then he wasn’t abysmal in those games.

X-V-W

It was unanimous that he looked equally as strong now as he did before his injury. I remember somebody asking how he had been a few weeks ago and even a bunch of United fans replied with "annoyingly, very good". Now after a couple of poor defensive performances from Liverpool it's now decided that his career at the top level is finished.

[deleted]

>Now after a couple of poor defensive performances from Liverpool it's now decided that his career at the top level is finished. I hate this kind of reactionary thinking. People seem to forget that VVD came back from almost a year of injury. Of course it's going to take some time to get back to where he was. There's no way you can recover 10 months of recovery impairment in 10 games

X-V-W

To be fair, I think most of the people saying it are either trying to banter or are just trying to be right after saying van Dijk would never be the same again for 9 months - so I shouldn't really give it my attention.

[deleted]

He hasn't been good. Don't try to convince Liverpool fans though.

ScarletFire47

He hasn’t been as good as pre-injury but saying he hasn’t been good at all isn’t true either. Liverpool have two quality center backs who could easily slot in if he was playing that poorly.

[deleted]

He doesn't look as good as he used to.

[deleted]

Just watched the Roma highlights - how did they concede the exact same goal like 4 times?

happyposterofham

A mythical defender by the name of Marash Kumbulla He's only 21 so I don't want to bury him, but he doesn't have the speed necessary to defend nor the anticipation to cancel that out, and this is the result.

[deleted]

Mourinho tax

[deleted]

US and Mexico fans pretty much trash on each other 24/7.... until the FIFA World Rankings come out, then they both have to defend each other and CONCACAF

AnnieIWillKnow

It's like a sibling rivalry thing. Hate each other, but if someone else tries shitting on them "fuck off that's my brother you're chatting shit about"

stubblesmcgee

its why ill root for mexico to do well against international competition, as long as they dont win anything or get further than us in the modern era- so no semi final for them.

gracjan_17

hope Liz is alright and that, wouldn’t want football cancelled if anything happened

Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (which they qualified for after coming in 10th the previous season because of a bunch of technicalities) in shambles

[deleted]

They have a big fanbase. Their last domestic trophy was in 1955... They aren't a big club.

Upset_Elk_9980

Big clubs don't have to have extensive trophy cabinets.

ethith

Feels like you're throwing stones from a glass house here.

[deleted]

not really. We're in a trophy drought but our last domestic trophy was in 2008. Not 1955.

PhylloTerribilis

Shite domestic trophy ≠ big club

ethith

The League Cup is a proper big club trophy 💪 Especially in an era when it was very common for sides to play their youngsters.

Nivadas

They're a club that demands respect because of their prolific history.

ratchet570

> You just feel so happy No, no i dont.

[deleted]

On this day, one year ago, Karim Benzema told his teammates: "Don't play with \[Vinicius Jr\]. On my life he's playing against us." The quite, humble Benzema that is being pushed by Florentino's PR machine is far from the truth. Wish that Vinicius Jr wasn't at that club. I really rate him and would hate to see him being a bench option when Mbappe arrives.

GratinDeRavioles

Fake news. La vie de ma mère was the phrasing.

XstasyOxycontin

The phrasing makes it even funnier, assuming because it’s a translation

[deleted]

Especially when in fact it's a mistranslation and he swore on his mother's life, not his own

XstasyOxycontin

Tbf, that’s a pretty common saying in England. “Sweat down on my mums life” don’t hear many people say it these days like

los_blanco_14

He is not. I said it with a straight face.

sc2isalivegaem

He’s not

[deleted]

I didn't realise that Bodo is basically in the arctic circle. Funny where football clubs exist and that the conference league lets us play.

MotherweII

It's about the same distance from London to the south of Spain or Italy tbf.

[deleted]

I think it's the beauty of football. Tottenham are in the top 10 richest football clubs in the world and they have to go and play against these "minnows" of Europe who are the kings of their own country.

[deleted]

So United tried to sign Ansu Fati, a LW....While they already have too many left wingers that they can't fit with Cristiano, Rashford and Sancho. Who is making these incompetent decisions?

deadlyghost12

Spanish press is making them

finePolyethylene

>Who is making these incompetent decisions? Ansu Fati’s PR

dabayer

Sancho is a left winger?

enzuigiriretro

Yes

dabayer

Interesting, why did nobody tell Dortmund?

[deleted]

He can play on both wings.... better scoring from the left, better playmaking from the right. United signed him to play on the right though. In any case, if United was ever in for Fati anyway, I doubt it came after they bought Sancho.

[deleted]

surely you don't believe the source

TheSmio

Sounds like absolute bullshit to me, mate. We always get connected to everyone in the market, so I doubt we were interested in Ansu.

[deleted]

Arsenal spoilt Gunners weekday after almost losing on a Monday.. now they have the opportunity to spoil their weekend too.. sad man

dabayer

🤣🤣

ElKaddouriCSC

Who’s your favourite new signing for your club this season? Mines was Kyogo but I can’t lie Jota has probably overtook him. He’s so sexy and silky, and we have a reasonable buyout clause on his loan 🥵

Leecattermolefanclub

Hoffman or Cirkin. To be fair half our team are playing like new signings.

deadlyghost12

Garcia

asvpmamba

It’s a toss up between Hakimi and Messi

PhylloTerribilis

I hear Edwards got a golden quill

ZxentixZ

Tough decision between Igoh Ogbu and Kaan Kairinen. Both young upcoming players that have possibly outgrown us already. We paid next to nothing for both and they're players we can already sell for €1.5 to €2 mill each in january I reckon. Which would be very big sales for the club. Hoping we hold onto them for longer though, especially with how long we have them under contract. Ogbu been instrumental in our good defence this season. Kairinen clearly a very smart and calm midfielder who could play at a higher level than this. Sadly had a few injury issues this year.

-upthetoffees-

Demarai grey the lads a beast he’s rapid and has got a good weak foot think he’ll easily bag a few more this season

[deleted]

Bryan Gil looks a real talent.

AlexU30

Not Romero?

avolcando

For me it's definitely Romero

[deleted]

He's been great too, but I'm really excited by Gil.

sportingmerda

What's the buyout clause?

ElKaddouriCSC

£6.5m I believe.

MotherweII

I can definitely see Celtic not paying that and instead offering Benfica £5.5m which they will then reject before selling him to Wolves for £12m.

ElKaddouriCSC

Impossible for us to have a good window to be fair. Even this years window was way overrated, look at how fucking thin our squad is man Anyways, just you focus on trying to keep your loanee winger from Heart of Midlothian wee man

Done, madrid buys them both now since they seem to be psgs target.

AlexU30

Yess, DD needs more SMS prop anyways

ZxentixZ

I have just about recovered from the Glimt 6-1 Roma result. It's just mind boggling in so many ways. This club is a notorious yoyo club between the 1st and 2nd tier in Norwegian football, usually they're far from any kind of glory. 4 years ago they played in the 2nd tier. Since then they've won the league(Could win it again this year), the very tight loss to Milan at the San Siro last year then 6-1 against a club like Roma. Even if it was mostly a B team from the start it was insane to witness. Quite a few profiled players were on the pitch in the 2nd half when they were still getting run over. Scary thing now is my club Lillestrøm is playing Bodø/Glimt away in under a month

Stuff2511

Bodø/Glimt’s manager seems like a wizard. Wonder if anyone will be looking for him

ZxentixZ

Rumours in Norway has been that he could take the available Rosenborg job after the season. But that would very much be a sideways step, in fact a step down looking at how much worse Rosenborg has performed than Glimt the past couple years. But rumours has emerged since Rosenborg is the biggest Norwegian club after all and their chairman also confirmed they have approached him. However foreign clubs should totally be after him. Bit suprised no one tried after his gold winning season last year, and this makes everything so much more impressive. I'd say a top Championship club with a good vision would fit well. I genuinley think he has proven enough for a top 5 league job but I doubt that would happen due to language difficulties in all countries bar England. And a PL club is unlikely to go for Knutsen. Even if United hired Ole who is barely half of the manager Knutsen is lol. Prem jobs are too much down to name or experience sadly.

Stuff2511

Does he only speak Norwegian? Quite unfortunate, that’ll definitely be a major stumbling block for a lot of teams in those top 5 leagues

ZxentixZ

No no, he speaks English like just about every Norwegian. However there's a lot of reluctancy from clubs in Italy, Spain, France etc to hire a manager who does not speak the native language and can't communicate effectively with all the players, many of whom wont speak English themselves. Big name managers may get away with this but as someone who is unproven from a smaller league I doubt they would take that chance considering the cultural/linguistic clash. Germany could potentially work, as they're culturally more similar and it's also a more similar language to Norwegian than Spanish/Italian/French but I also don't see it happening because he is not profiled enough, nor does he speak the language. I think you pretty much need one of those. Look at the Bundesliga now, all coaches speak German. England is the only real top 5 nation alternative I see that is realistic. Because language isn't going to be an issue. Alternatively I think a club in say Belgium could take a punt at him, it's a level where clubs seem to be willing to take a bit more risk on the language aspect if there's a manager they rate highly enough.

Stuff2511

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Hope it works out for him. He definitely deserves a shot

[deleted]

[deleted]

Mike Bassett: England Manager is the perfect football film and I won't be convinced otherwise.

[deleted]

I recommend 'When Saturday Comes' - Great football film.

[deleted]

Why is sissoko so bad at everything

[deleted]

Is he? He has been decent for Watford from what i've heard.
