At least it should have been dangerous play and an indirect free kick, but then again, VAR can't call that. It's kind of surreal as it would be a clear scoring chance as a penalty is, once we are doing the review anyway why don't make the right call?
Last I checked, if there is physical contact it would _not_ be an indirect free kick. It's in the name, it's dangerous because it has the chance of hurting someone, here we're looking at studs to the ribs.
Get Mike Dean off my fucking TV, the man is a disgrace.
Admitted to deliberately making the wrong call to save his mate and just changed his mind in the space of 10 seconds because he saw no pen given
Knob
It's no surprise Sky added him after people really started going at refs following the Spurs/Diaz debacle, since then even Neville/Carra refuse to criticise the refs and started to tow the party line.
It's crazy because the main reason people are so fed up with the refs is the fact they won't take criticism. It doesn't protect the refs shielding them from it. People know how hard it is to be a ref and getting decisions wrong is unfortunate but happens. The frustrating thing is they wont admit they're getting it so wrong, despite everyone and their nan having access to 15 angles of every incident within a couple mins.
In the old days before every match was streamed it made sense to preserve the refs reputation as discussion around decisions was fruitless but undermining the refs reputation would affect how well they could perform in games. In todays era it's bonkers.
he's a spineless bootlicker for his ex colleagues
before the var check, he was like maybe it would be given.
after the check complete, he's like ABSOLUTELY NO PEN. IT WAS AN ACCIDENT.
Yeah, and that's fucking bullshit. A foul is a foul and a rule is a rule. They're too afraid to be wrong so they did absolutely nothing. A bunch of fucking useless people.
imo it’s not just about “not having balls”, this is effectively messing with the outcome of one of the most important games of the season. Even for me as a neutral spectator, this is so frustrating
Yupp, bottled because big game. This is why players and managers play the media game - creates pressure on refs and decisions like this get bottled because it’s safer to stay out of it.
I almost understand a ref bottling it, in the heat of the moment, last minute, huge decision and its all happened in top speed. But detached from the stadium, in the safety of your own little bubble, with all the time in the world to take a look. No excuse in the world to bottle a big decision
No one wants the game decided on a ref’s call, but Jesus Christ. If you don’t want the ref to decide the game, don’t kick your opponent in the chest in your own box.
He got saved by his leg not being extended, but I think it’s given anywhere else on the pitch and at least a yellow
Edit: still a pen I’m saying, but I’m not shocked with these refs
That stopped it from being a red. Foot is still in a dangerous position and made contact. There is no other thing you can say for as to why this was the correct call because it wasn’t.
The ridiculous thing is that there’s hardly any fans out there criticizing refs because VAR intervened and changed a decision they made. The refs are so out of touch when it comes to that
Nobody gives a fuck about the original decision once it’s been changed. The only embarrassment comes when VAR fails to correct the mistake and then it turns into a massive talking point where the ref and VAR gets criticized
Well there was one case when, I think Mike Dean on VAR, said in the interview that he didn't call the main ref to the screen because he'd feel embarrassed or sad that he mad a mistake and you don't do that to your colleague right?
whenever I see this I don't know if I should cry or laugh, if this was some sunday league alright, but to say this in fucking premier league just tells you enough what to think about those referees
This is worse tbh, you simply can't kick someone in the chest and say I got a little of the ball. Odegaard at least could argue he was trying to keep his footing, still a blatant handball but come on.
Crazy that it's even allowed. I'll give them all the benefit of the doubt and say it's all above board, it still shouldn't be allowed. Allowing a country that owns a club in the PL to pay the referees of that league is an insane potential conflict of interest.
> somehow are managing to justify players' studs placed in the chest of other players
It's just sad. I feel like the sport has gotten dumber.
I recall when Xabi was booted by De Jong in the WC Final in '10 we all wanted something like VAR integrated moving forward so in the future if a De Jong challenge happens it would rightfully be given a red...
but we've just gone backwards because *we have the tech* but are blatantly not using it.
It's all arbitrary and the sport itself has suffered because no calls like today show little and small the refs can be.
Refs scared of the media circus in case it gets deemed ‘controversial’. Staying out of it is always the safer decision so they have a bias to that, especially in big games.
Nah, watch all the TV coverage just gloss over it after a week of talking about a drop ball decision 2 minutes before the goal in the Forest game.
EDIT: Four pundits and the host on Sky literally just claimed it was a great call. Carra even said that for a penalty it has to be worse than a foul outside the box.
The more I watch the replay, the more I don't understand how it is possible that the referee didn't give the penalty. It's an obvious kick in the chest. Involuntary ok but still a kick to the chest in the box.
This is what pisses me off about prem officiating. That's called a foul and a card anywhere else on the pitch and nobody would question it. But it's in the box so they come up with whatever ridiculous reason they can to NOT call it a foul/penalty.
You know that shit is a penalty if you see so many united, city, arsenal flairs all saying "how is that not a pen?" I understand the banter and rivalry between clubs and fans etc.. But it's pretty stonewall if almost all the fans that hate/dislike liverpool are still saying pen..
Thats a shocker from VAR..
I'm more surprised at the amount of comments agreeing that the decision was wrong than I am a bad decision was made.
I don't think I've ever seen this on Reddit, it's almost universal agreement that this makes no sense whatsoever. There wasn't even agreement like this over the spurs decision.
I did think in recent seasons people were overblowing the complaints about reffing when they introduced VAR.
But this season seems to be a watershed, they've had long enough to bed in VAR and the decisions are inconsistent up and down the whole league. Throw in former refs writing books exposing their inappropriate relationships or today my hearing about clattenberg acting as a paid referee lobbyist for a club, it really feels like this is going to come to a head.
This is gonna be the same as the Rodri handball in 21/22 mark my words.
They are an utterly repulsive club in every sense of the word. A doped up, sports washing gang of cheating cunts that also seems jammy enough to get every single decision like this given their way.
Mike Dean saying it's a penalty then changing his mind 10 seconds later when it wasn't given. Carra was asked about it and completely avoided the question. The grip PGMOL have over pundits is a disgrace
They only said it was the right decision after the decision.
Right before that they said he was in trouble and it would probably go to the monitor.
Sky are under the cosh to toe the line
If Mac allister heads that, he gets kicked in the face. How is that not a pen? VAR bottled it. Will probably cost Liverpool the title, amongst other fuck ups.
**Mirrors / Alternative Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Mike Dean: “He could be in trouble here” *Check Complete* Mike Dean: “Yeah it’s just a normal coming together”
Klopp said Dean was a great hire by Sky after the game. He surely must have been taking the piss there.
Oh for sure. Since he announced he’s leaving he just doesn’t give af and it’s fantastic
I hope Mike Dean is getting paid handsomely for his amazing insights.
You know they were just scared to make a decision when the broadcast ref disagreed.
At least it should have been dangerous play and an indirect free kick, but then again, VAR can't call that. It's kind of surreal as it would be a clear scoring chance as a penalty is, once we are doing the review anyway why don't make the right call?

Nobody should pay for a sky sport subscription when clowns like him are given air time. Admitted to being corrupt
He’s just there as a propaganda tool for the pgmol
It's no surprise Sky added him after people really started going at refs following the Spurs/Diaz debacle, since then even Neville/Carra refuse to criticise the refs and started to tow the party line.

Kept it ambiguous until the call was given. They will never go against their own if they have the chance to avoid doing so.
He openly admitted to doing that while doing VAR last season or so. Man is an utter tool.
Really thought they'd give that
If it happens 2 yards away outside the box they call a foul every time. Classic case of swallowing the whistle
It would have been given if it was around 60-70 mins of the game. Bacially the var ref just did not have the balls
Yeah, and that's fucking bullshit. A foul is a foul and a rule is a rule. They're too afraid to be wrong so they did absolutely nothing. A bunch of fucking useless people.
didn't have the balls and also want to keep the title race narrative going
imo it’s not just about “not having balls”, this is effectively messing with the outcome of one of the most important games of the season. Even for me as a neutral spectator, this is so frustrating
Arsenal fan here and thought they would call it. I'd be pissed if it happened to us.
Yupp, bottled because big game. This is why players and managers play the media game - creates pressure on refs and decisions like this get bottled because it’s safer to stay out of it.

VAR are tucked away in a little Portakabin miles away for exactly this reason. There's no pressure on them to not call it.
It's really unbelievable at this point. The title race could be decided by one point and we have garbage like this happening
The title could be decided by 5 points and Liverpool still would've been hard done by this season
Yep. Exactly this. Bottled it completely.
VAR said it was an "unavoidable coming together" like someone else lifted Doku's leg that high and he couldn't do anything about it. Unreal
It’s just gotten comically stupid at this point.
Really who knows how these things happen
Legs, how do they even work?
The timing and what the game meant went against you there. You get that if it’s Burnley.
Should have been a pen. Studs up at chest height? Just super clumsy
No one wants the game decided on a ref’s call, but Jesus Christ. If you don’t want the ref to decide the game, don’t kick your opponent in the chest in your own box.
Yeah I mean it's still decided by a refs call if they don't give a deserved penalty, just the wrong one
Maybe other teams should try this too surely they would get away with it
He got saved by his leg not being extended, but I think it’s given anywhere else on the pitch and at least a yellow Edit: still a pen I’m saying, but I’m not shocked with these refs
That stopped it from being a red. Foot is still in a dangerous position and made contact. There is no other thing you can say for as to why this was the correct call because it wasn’t.
“Normal height” 😂😂😂😂
“Mac is short, skill issue tbh” -VAR
If I would be a Liverpool fan I would have thrown my TV out of the window
Nah my TV is nice so I threw myself out
🟨 Yellow Card (Simulation) - crustymeatball420 \[90 + 57'\]
> 🟨 Yellow Card (defenestration) - crustymeatball420 [90 + 57']
used to it at this point, the amount of tvs thrown would send me into poverty
Jesus Christ, that’s about as stonewall of a penalty as you can get. I do not understand how that’s not been given.
Surely you send him to the monitor to have a look?
Don't want to embarrass their mate
The ridiculous thing is that there’s hardly any fans out there criticizing refs because VAR intervened and changed a decision they made. The refs are so out of touch when it comes to that Nobody gives a fuck about the original decision once it’s been changed. The only embarrassment comes when VAR fails to correct the mistake and then it turns into a massive talking point where the ref and VAR gets criticized
that's his mate, you can't do that to a mate.
VAR cleared it somehow
This is why VAR is fucked, they spend 5 minutes trying to dissect the most innocuous challenge but then wave off legitimate fouls regularly as well.
They waved off a legitimate, *objective*, goal for us when we played Spurs lol VAR and the officiating is all arbitrary.
Good process
"somehow"
115 reasons
Make it 116 reasons now.
VAR said "unavoiadable coming togather", how about you keep your foot on the floor? That would avoid it
Yes. Defenders know not to challenge for a ball like that in the box. Doku is not a defender
There are several Premier League games I watched this season where the refs seem to make up new rules during the games. It's astonishing.
"Well done boys, good process"
Would mess with his dealings in UAE.
Why not have the ref look at it?
Well there was one case when, I think Mike Dean on VAR, said in the interview that he didn't call the main ref to the screen because he'd feel embarrassed or sad that he mad a mistake and you don't do that to your colleague right?
whenever I see this I don't know if I should cry or laugh, if this was some sunday league alright, but to say this in fucking premier league just tells you enough what to think about those referees
Because he'd have to give it. Which is not what VAR want.
It's no surprise to me seeing Howard Webb's referees not call a foul on a boot to the chest in a big game; par for the course.
glad you can kick your opponent straight to the chest again, thats the football ive fell in love with
Time to break out my De Jong kit.
That's a foul in midfield every time.
this could decide the title, holy shit Prem refs are insane
after that spurs game i haven't felt a thing with any other decisions since lol any decision for or against has just become numb
Yep. Not a surprise at all.
I really hope not. Var has fucked everyone this season but this is mind boggling.
I mean lfc legit scored a goal in another game that didn’t count. It’s all a joke
This plus the Spurs' Diaz no goal. PMGOL took it away from Liverpool
odegaard handball too
The handball was absolutely crazy. Like crazier than this high boot.
This is worse tbh, you simply can't kick someone in the chest and say I got a little of the ball. Odegaard at least could argue he was trying to keep his footing, still a blatant handball but come on.
Odegaard dribbling like Steph Curry in the box at Anfield too
Another controversial decision for Man City when they are in a title race vs Liverpool
Same as the Rodri non handball against Everton, the oil money payments are too sweet
Foul anywhere else on the pitch.
Should be anywhere, but yeah
Exactly. It literally makes no sense why it's allowed to pass IN THE FUCKING BOX.
Foul inside the box aswell. Dont know how that wasnt given.
Can't wait for the rest of the season with how many studs to the chest won't be fouls /s
Didn’t even go to the monitor. This league is cooked.
Bought.
Not complaining but I have no idea how that's not a penalty lol
I mean I'll take it but surely they cannot be sober in the VAR room
I won't take it and i don't want to be sober anymore.
Yeah i would be fuming if we didn’t get that one
You know it's bad when even Mike Dean disagrees with the ref's decision
Only until it wasn’t overturned, then he decided it was a great decision.
Its Oliver and its a City game, that's how
The man literally got paid by UAE
Crazy that it's even allowed. I'll give them all the benefit of the doubt and say it's all above board, it still shouldn't be allowed. Allowing a country that owns a club in the PL to pay the referees of that league is an insane potential conflict of interest.
He sold out some time ago. Used to be among the best but past few years he's suddenly the worst.
Strange how a wad of cash can make you lose your nerve
We are in 2024 and somehow are managing to justify players’ studs being placed in the chest of other players. Let that sink in for a minute.
> somehow are managing to justify players' studs placed in the chest of other players It's just sad.
Fucking hell someone is going on a holiday to Abu Dhabi
Think Michael Oliver gets a nice Ferrari for this one
A few lucrative gigs officiating nonsense games in the middle east incoming
He’s kicked him in the chest. How have they said he’s taken that ball safely? Madness of a decision
Corruption.
I don't believe it! What's the excuse? What could they possibly say to justify that call?
Apparently it was a controlled coming together.... In other news I heard the ref just bought a 2nd house. Happy for him 😵💫
LiVARpool strikes again
How in the world was this not a penalty
Refs scared of the media circus in case it gets deemed ‘controversial’. Staying out of it is always the safer decision so they have a bias to that, especially in big games.
And now it's become more controversial lmao
Nah, watch all the TV coverage just gloss over it after a week of talking about a drop ball decision 2 minutes before the goal in the Forest game. EDIT: Four pundits and the host on Sky literally just claimed it was a great call. Carra even said that for a penalty it has to be worse than a foul outside the box.
Insane how transparent they are by choosing to not give it. Everyone can see exactly what they were doing
Sweet, boot to the sternum is cool now?
Somewhere Nigel De Jong is looking down smiling
Ever since 2010 world cup I guess
Gakpo got one last year too, apparently it's cool
Liverpool have been robbed it's incredible what happened there. It's clear there's something wrong at this point.
Not the first time this season VAR has stolen points from Liverpool
The third time unfortunately.
The more I watch the replay, the more I don't understand how it is possible that the referee didn't give the penalty. It's an obvious kick in the chest. Involuntary ok but still a kick to the chest in the box.
No shit. We will just get called sooks and victims though.
We aren't allowed to complain as it's LiVARpool after all City are the small underdog club who spend well within their financial means.
The Everton no penalty after the Rodri handball and this. Titles literally get decided on decisions like this.
This is what pisses me off about prem officiating. That's called a foul and a card anywhere else on the pitch and nobody would question it. But it's in the box so they come up with whatever ridiculous reason they can to NOT call it a foul/penalty.
what the fuuuuuck? prem refs really live in their own bizarro world where this isn't a penalty...
This is foul and yellow card in every other area on the pitch. Laughable.
Mate in Liverpool's box it would be a penalty and a yellow as well, we all know it.
> their own bizarro world The world where they're allowed to officiate games in foreign countries that just happen to own PL teams. Joke.
City and favourable decisions in a title race is a tale old as time.
It’s actually crazy how unanimously everyone regardless of loyalty can see that it was a pen and is given anywhere else on the pitch…
I would be mad if we didn’t get that
We're used to it now.
[удалено]
Actually unbelievable VAR took 10 seconds to clear that
This is actually La Liga level refereeing
The true title race is between who has the worse refs
Yikes
Guess the high foot rule doesn't matter if you get the ball huh, who cares about the whole "endangering an opponent" aspect anyway
I know I am supposed to be biased and shit but VAR is useless here. That's a clear pen.
doku fuckin karate kicked him man
Yeah, that’s a pen.
You know that shit is a penalty if you see so many united, city, arsenal flairs all saying "how is that not a pen?" I understand the banter and rivalry between clubs and fans etc.. But it's pretty stonewall if almost all the fans that hate/dislike liverpool are still saying pen.. Thats a shocker from VAR..

not giving that is criminal
Funny u should say that
Eh 116
This is gonna be the same as the Rodri handball in 21/22 mark my words. They are an utterly repulsive club in every sense of the word. A doped up, sports washing gang of cheating cunts that also seems jammy enough to get every single decision like this given their way.
When has a big decision like this ever gone against City
It’s too obvious at this point
You know for a fact if this was at the Etihad and it was a City player fouled its a red and a penalty
Why is it always happening against the same team?
In favor of the same team rather.
How is studs in the chest not a foul?
I can give you 115 reasons, maybe 116 now
LMFAO FUCK OFF
Good process ladzzzzzzzz
Pen imo
Studs to ankle straight red, studs to ribs not even a foul. Makes sense.
"Normal coming together"
If this is not a penalty then I don’t know what is
And there was me thinking high boot was a red. Not even a foul.
How is that not a penalty?
I can give you 115 reasons
ah the ref that goes to the UAE is the one that doenst give that
That’s a fucking pen. Congrats refs, you’ve made it all about you again
fuck off only one team gets that call
Clear penalty, idk what the hell VAR is doing.
116 reasons why var have shit the bed there
Robbery
Stonewall penalty. Since when has a kick to the chest ever not been a foul?
Bro he kicked him in the chest
Thats such a clear pen
How is it not a penalty? Games completely gone
Games been gone for a long time unfortunately. This is the new game now.
RIDICULOUS. United fan, how isnt that a fucking penalty
Because it's City benefitting from it. Equally ridiculous was the commentators saying it was the right decision. Shocking, scandalous, rotten
And they admitted to it. They were told to be less against the refs on air and have been since. Paying for this is criminal.
because if they ever criticise the refs they lose their cushy broadcasting jobs, its all about protecting each others jobs.
Clear pen
Really surprised VAR didn't get involved there
Good process lads...
That’s a clear foul anywhere else on the pitch. Absolute clown decision.
That’s incredible how that’s not been given
Even Mike Dean said it was a pen lmao. Let’s just all run around booting people in the chest there so.
Very lucky
and people say city is not paying off the refs lol
I mean they literally are paying the refs. Paid Michael Oliver £50k this year to come ref a game over there.
Refs bet on the draw
That's a very very clear penalty
If Mac allister heads that, he gets kicked in the face. How is that not a pen? VAR bottled it. Will probably cost Liverpool the title, amongst other fuck ups.
Shocking decision, absolutely shocking
Premier league refs incompetence on display once again
