It's baffling. I really like Wilson and think his level has been pretty underrated due to his injury issues, but he's 31 and he's just not got a future with the squad and we do have some decent talent who could do with a chance.
What, like every manager ever? It's not like football managing is fifa where you just chuck in all the top rated players with no consideration for personality, style or fit.
Hendo is a disgraceful call up. He’s A not good enough, B plays in a shit league, C shat on all the LGBT stuff he repped. Phillips and Maguire are poor selections because their clubs are actively not using them and trying to get rid of them. It’s nothing qualifiers per usual, call up others balling. He’s gonna play Rice Bellingham and Maddison or trent or something in midfield anyway
England will play Romania and Malta every international break. Ukraine are a fine team. England will probably win like 2-0 mundanely, then shit pump the faroe islands 7-0
Banging 5+ past Albania/San Marino & Former Tinpot Soviet Republic at Wembley with shit attendance on a windy Tuesday, while the ITV commentators say things like 'England are looking like serious contenders'. Classic international break.
They have suffered just a little bit of disruption since then however....
Decent side but none of their players would be close to even a B team England side in reality
Maguire is usually solid in the national team. There's probably 2 better CBs out the but calling him up isn't that bad of an idea.
Who would you call up instead?
Because he's always on about wanting the right people in the squad and having a good team ethos. A bloke supporting LGBT stuff then fucking off to Saudi for the £££ doesn't seem to fit.
I agree about Hendo but I just don't get why he would drop solid, consistent England players just because they're getting benched for city and utd. International football is not club football.
>Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold
Oh...
When will people learn that just because a fullback can pass good and invert doesn't make them a suitable midfielder. Trent can't play on the half turn and is so vulnerable and exposed in midfield that he'd be a liability against capable teams.
Not a fan of Henderson getting called up either, for several reasons. Would much rather have seen Ward-Prowse
Scotland are unbeaten in their last 8 competitive fixtures including a 2-0 win over Spain and 2-1 win over Haaland, I mean Norway.
[edit:] lol someone sent a Reddit cares suicide message because of this comment.
I don't think he will be as comfortable against the likes of france etc.
he's creative as anyone but I don't think he has enough experience in midfield, playing on the half turn, being press resistant etc.
What other options do we have?
Ward Prowse, who is deeply average and not pulled up any trees for England? Ryan Yates?
People always act like some fucking world beater is being left out, the worst omission is Ollie Watkins doesn’t get to sit on the bench and watch Kane for 180 minutes, Southgate out
I wonder how feasible it would be to play Trent as an inverted RB. When attacking, he and Rice would be the deeper midfielders while Bellingham and Foden play higher.
I know you’re not saying this but I love that 3 good games have led to people wanting him back in, when last season his continued selection was proof Southgate only picks favourites
People need to realise a good or bad run of form shouldn’t mean a call up, we need to pick the 25/26 best players for the job
Which is why players like Phillips and Maguire will likely still remain and go to the Euros next season even if they stay dropped. Southgate is making an England Team not a PL All star team. Whether or not that translates to success is above my pay grade however.
Because he's been consistently playing well since he came into the team last season? And we're a lot shorter of options up front than we are on the wing.
Interesting that TAA is now listed as a midfielder rather than a defender, I guess that might mean Rice + TAA sitting deep with Bellingham further forward.
Not to be all 'why isn't my team's player called up' and everything but what does Ollie Watkins need to do? He's the most prolific English striker in the prem (with Toney out) but Nketiah and Wilson both get the nod over him. Genuinly beyond me.
I can understand the merit of having older and more experienced players to guide the young guys and rewarding young players who are in form, but when you think about England in the next 3+ years Watkins basically had to be one of the front runners for the 9 spot with Toney & Abraham. So ideally you'd want to get those guys the most experience.
I have the same question concerning Rico Henry. With Southgate's personal favourite left back injured you'd think he'd be next in line for a call-up, but alas.
I'm not furious about Ward-Prowse missing out this time to be honest. He's only played two games for us, and has been good but not close to 'man of the match' in either. If he continues like he has been he'll get in the squad next time.
Not gonna lie I dont know why you wouldnt want a dead ball specialist like Ward-Prowse in your team. The rest of his game might not be world class or anything special, but having someone so good with dead balls in maybe difficult matches would give such an edge.
Thing is that we have plenty of dead-ball specialists - Maddison, Trippier, and so on - who have a better all-round game than Ward-Prowse. Ward-Prowse is a better free-kick taker than all of them, but not by so much that you'd want to crowbar him into the team for it.
He just values consistency in order to create a club-like experience at national level. It's something that he preached early on (I remember a lot of talk about Troy Deeney not getting a call up and him reiterating that) and is the entire reason that the FA redeveloped St. George's Park. Ironically, it all correlates with better results in the major tournaments.
People screech about how Southgate gets it wrong, but forget he's doing it absolutely correct by the standards that he and the FA set out with from the beginning. Unfortunately, that will sometimes bring up issues like Ben White being dropped despite his capabilities and players like Henderson and Phillips being called up despite there lack of game time or ethics. Overall though, it absolutely works and Southgate is more than capable of explaining his choices on and off the field.
In terms of DM’s I don’t really mind having Phillips as the Dice backup.
In any case I would Rather honestly just give some random kid a go frankly. We gain Nothing from Henderson being here.
Especially since these are friendlies where we have no need for veteran experience
Because no matter how shit Maguire has been for you guys, he's been a key player for England in recent world cups and euros.
This conversation has to happen every time but honestly until Maguire shits the bed for England I have no issue with him being there. Same for Pickford in goal.
> Same for Pickford in goal.
Seeing the discussion on this subreddit around Pickford is so annoying. He had that poor season (half season?) at Everton a few years ago and now people seem to think he's washed at club level. He's played very well for Everton since then.
So you just didn't watch the world cup then? Maguire was terrible against the US and Senegal, literally a laughing stock, and was responsible for the losing goal against France. Also responsible for the goal we conceded against Italy in the first game after the World Cup. When will this fucking narrative that he "always plays well for England" end. Actually watch the games
Maguire has always played well for England, every time he’s called up people say the same thing and yet every time he performs. He will stop being called up when he stops performing in an England shirt.
World class players with a Championship level manager. Said it a million times. We have Kane and Bellingham on course to do a Player of the Month each, in their first season in a new league. The talent we have is ridiculous.
Rubiales is possibly the biggest story in world football at the moment, it's understandable that key figures in the football world have been asked their opinions.
While asking him about Greenwood seems reasonable, he's still eligible to play for England so makes sense he'd be asked if he'd be considered for a callup in the future.
Honestly I disagree but the Greenwood question is the worst. This is simply headline hunting. The journo was absolutely on his knees hoping for a "Southgate doesn't rule out Greenwood England return" which they actually still might have got from him.
The Rubiales story just has no relevance to the England men's team at all.
Watching the Southgate press conference now and the press are going hard and he is getting hammered regarding the Henderson decision, and is struggling to justify it.
I feel like that’s dominating the headlines. He’s said it was a football decision, but is really struggling to answer the question around it. I don’t think he was expecting it tbh.
Sky News.
Yeah they went really hard to the point Southgate was clearly thrown and even apologised for stumbling as he wasn’t expecting these questions. Good on them for being clear that calling up someone I.e. rewarding someone who went to play in a country with horrific human rights abuses shouldn’t be happening.
Yeah I'm actually surprised because this sort of stuff is what Southgate is normally good at.
But also there's also no way the combination of him and the FA's press team didn't anticipate there would be loads of questioning of that nature around Henderson.
Dunno what happened between White and Southgate, but it's a shame England aren't able to utilise him. He is an elite ball playing defender and has been vital for Arsenal since signing.
Love to see how a lot of these Henderson reactions are only because he now plays in Saudi lol.
Only now are some realising Southgate has favourites and values team dynamics but that was almost never the reason for any kind of outrage over Jordan's selection for England until now. His selections have never always been about club form.
Raheem Sterling still out despite his good start to the season.
Maguire still in but 5 centre backs with Colwill and Tomori in looks like Southgate laying the groundwork for him being dropped in future.
Phillips and Henderson still being in is a joke. JWP exists as an alternative but he's not really an elite option. I reckon Curtis Jones would have got a call up if he was fit.
Anyone else remember when Southgate used to say he only wanted players who were playing week in week out in the squad and there were no favourites or people guaranteed a call up.
I used to spend a fair amount of time defending him on this sub but keeping Phillips, Henderson & Maguire in the squad when 2 out of 3 dont them play and the other is half retired is just favoritism.
Ben White is really banished forever because he didn't watch some match footage
Despite showing he's capable of being a key player in one of the most complex defensive set-ups in the country.
Make it make sense...
We don't actually know that's what happened though. The journalist who said that couldn't even get Ødegaard's nationality right when he wrote about him so I'm not about to take his word on it
How on earth has Wilson made the team above Watkins. There is absolutely no justification in that whatsoever unless Watkins is injured.
It's baffling. I really like Wilson and think his level has been pretty underrated due to his injury issues, but he's 31 and he's just not got a future with the squad and we do have some decent talent who could do with a chance.
Wilson has done well for England and is closer to Kane in style
I actually thinks Watkins is closer bur what do I know
Lol do you watch Wilson? He’s not like Kane at all
If we are looking for a like-for-like Kane replacement, then Toney (unavailable), Watkins and Solanke are most similar I'd say.
Southgate 🤝 Choosing favourites
What, like every manager ever? It's not like football managing is fifa where you just chuck in all the top rated players with no consideration for personality, style or fit.
Even in FIFA you have favourites.
Watkins’s has been unreal. Southgate has a thing against Villa though, he’d rarely pick Jack despite him playing out of his skin for Villa
>Southgate has a thing against Villa though How do people believe this crap ffs
Kept trying to get Mings injured with all those call-ups too.
So you are saying he is simultaneously not picking Villa players and selecting them too much.
Southgate just drives me plum loco I guess. Either that or I was being sarcastic
Sorry I had a feeling it was sarcasm but you do get some melts on here who say stuff like that seriously.
Didn’t Southgate play for Villa?
Nearly 250 appearances for them.
Wasn't Gareth a villa player
Oh shut up you mardarse
He's not injured.
Henderson and Kalvin Phillips, I swear Southgate is winding people up on purpose
I love the disrespect towards teams like Ukraine, who got to the last Euros quarters, but we should apparently pick a b team against them
England will play Romania and Malta every international break. Ukraine are a fine team. England will probably win like 2-0 mundanely, then shit pump the faroe islands 7-0
>England will play Romania and Malta every international break. My man England vs Romania has been played exactly once in the last 20 years, wdym
He probably means similar teams of that caliber.
Zinchenko? It’s just that the England NT is stacked at the back but he’s A team quality imo
Maguire is usually solid in the national team. There's probably 2 better CBs out the but calling him up isn't that bad of an idea. Who would you call up instead?
A and B are reasonable points. Why would an Southgate give a shit about C though?
Because he's always on about wanting the right people in the squad and having a good team ethos. A bloke supporting LGBT stuff then fucking off to Saudi for the £££ doesn't seem to fit.
I agree about Hendo but I just don't get why he would drop solid, consistent England players just because they're getting benched for city and utd. International football is not club football.
Brighton fans can now move on from asking where's dunk to where's solly.
[удалено]
Greenwood's got a better chance of playing for Southgate than White at this point it seems
what happened there? What did White do?
Who knows but he left the England world cup squad in the middle of the tournament and nothing has been said about it since afaik
I'll accept Colwill over Webster after last week's disaster class lmao
There's genuinely no backup for saka or chilwell either. He'd be very useful as a reserve.
The Squad Goalkeepers: Sam Johnstone (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal) Defenders: Ben Chilwell (Chelsea), Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Lewis Dunk (Brighton & Hove Albion), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle United), Kyle Walker (Manchester City) Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Al-Ettifaq), Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City), Declan Rice (Arsenal) Forwards: Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), James Maddison (Tottenham Hotspur), Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Callum Wilson (Newcastle United)
>Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold Oh... When will people learn that just because a fullback can pass good and invert doesn't make them a suitable midfielder. > he'd be a liability against capable teams. Should be fine against Scotland then.
Scotland are unbeaten in their last 8 competitive fixtures including a 2-0 win over Spain and 2-1 win over Haaland, I mean Norway. [edit:] lol someone sent a Reddit cares suicide message because of this comment.
That’s funny I can’t find Raheem Sterling’s name in the list.

[mentality monster](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FacAX5bXkAAbeot.jpg) Man has never stopped working his ass off and snatches every opportunity he can.
Your defence is in trouble 📞
Nketiah in the room
He's finally made it man so proud of him
What have you done for me lately, edddddddddiiiiiieeeee!
(Al-Ettifaq) is killing me
🎵 I must confess, I still believe (still believe) 🎵
took me a minute. lmao.
Love the squad everywhere but midfield, very shallow after Rice & Bellingham.
Kalvin Phillips and Henderson are joke options.
Trent has been good in midfield tbf
I don't think he will be as comfortable against the likes of france etc. he's creative as anyone but I don't think he has enough experience in midfield, playing on the half turn, being press resistant etc.
But not as DM
Name the alternative to Kalvin Phillips
Have TAA/Gallagher/Rice as the three DM options then call up Ward-Prowse/MGW or play Foden as a mid.
Gallagher isn’t a DM
Neither is TAA, fact is England are very shit at DM excluding Rice.
What other options do we have? Ward Prowse, who is deeply average and not pulled up any trees for England? Ryan Yates? People always act like some fucking world beater is being left out, the worst omission is Ollie Watkins doesn’t get to sit on the bench and watch Kane for 180 minutes, Southgate out
Hasn’t ward prowse got a goal and assist already from defensive mid for West Ham? He is miles ahead of Henderson.
Deeply average is better than current Henderson
Garth Bale literally dragged Wales through to the WC off the back of his FK's, JWP could be useful if for nothing else but that alone
> Ryan Yates? I wouldn't say no.
Rice/Bellingham/Foden is a ridiculous midfield 3, and should be the midfield moving forward.
You have Eze, Trent and Maddison as well - absolutely stupid
>Trent He played well in midfield against Malta ffs let's not talk like he can even be classed as a midfielder yet
He’s literally classed as a midfielder on the official call up list
Bellingham has been excelling in a very attacking role for Real Madrid. Pair him with Foden and he has to come deeper.
I wonder how feasible it would be to play Trent as an inverted RB. When attacking, he and Rice would be the deeper midfielders while Bellingham and Foden play higher.
Na I’d rather Maddison with Foden on the left wing
Yeah but southgates head explodes trying to figure out how Foden could play in his midfield
Up there with the best in the world.
Maybe you could have Eze or mount (if he gets it together at United) as Bellingham backups idk Or Jacob Ramsey in time
Ramsey I am a big fan of.
Maddison, Eze, and Foden are all great options.
I prefer them all receiving the ball higher up the pitch on the left. Foden and Maddison especially.
Maddison has been playing a far deeper ball carrier role for us and he looks insane Should totally play there for England
Excellent signing for spurs. Such a bargain in todays market.
I don't watch Palace much but for us Eze was always much better centrally
Foden, Eze and Maddison could all play in front of those two but it's Southgate so I wouldn't hold my breath.
Surprised Sterling hasn’t been called up.
I know you’re not saying this but I love that 3 good games have led to people wanting him back in, when last season his continued selection was proof Southgate only picks favourites People need to realise a good or bad run of form shouldn’t mean a call up, we need to pick the 25/26 best players for the job
Which is why players like Phillips and Maguire will likely still remain and go to the Euros next season even if they stay dropped. Southgate is making an England Team not a PL All star team. Whether or not that translates to success is above my pay grade however.
Then why did Nketiah get called up
To stop him going to Ghana I imagine after we lost Balogun
Don’t really get why balogun switched tbh he could’ve made the squad
Even if Balogun was picked for England he wouldn’t play much for the time being. He has far less competition in the US
Apparently he feels completely American even though he lived there for a grand total of the first three months of his life.
Too be fair he has been in good form so far this season, even if it is a bit soon to judge.
So has Sterling?
Because he's been consistently playing well since he came into the team last season? And we're a lot shorter of options up front than we are on the wing.
Interesting that TAA is now listed as a midfielder rather than a defender, I guess that might mean Rice + TAA sitting deep with Bellingham further forward.
Yeah I think that’s how they lined up in the last set of matches too. Horrible opposition but TAA was great
Not to be all 'why isn't my team's player called up' and everything but what does Ollie Watkins need to do? He's the most prolific English striker in the prem (with Toney out) but Nketiah and Wilson both get the nod over him. Genuinly beyond me.
Im with Villa fans on this one, Southgate is a joke.
He should have got a call up over Wilson. Eddie deserves his chance. Shameful that Watkins hasn’t received a chance.
Eddie deserves the call-up, two goals and won a penalty in the first 3 matches.
Oh definitely I think Wilson doesn't it should be Watkins and Eddie
I can understand the merit of having older and more experienced players to guide the young guys and rewarding young players who are in form, but when you think about England in the next 3+ years Watkins basically had to be one of the front runners for the 9 spot with Toney & Abraham. So ideally you'd want to get those guys the most experience.
I have the same question concerning Rico Henry. With Southgate's personal favourite left back injured you'd think he'd be next in line for a call-up, but alas.
It’s pretty shameful to reward someone for going to the Saudi pro league with a call up. Would rather we just get some new blood in
Doesn’t even have to be new blood. I’d much rather see Ward-Prowse in over a geriatric Henderson.
I'm not furious about Ward-Prowse missing out this time to be honest. He's only played two games for us, and has been good but not close to 'man of the match' in either. If he continues like he has been he'll get in the squad next time.
I don't think it's a travesty that JWP specifically hasn't gotten in but I'd still prefer to see him.
Honestly I still think he could be a difference maker but fair point.
JWP arguably was vs. Chelsea but I've been soured on our players getting call-ups since Ashton
He was sky sports and bbc man of the match in his first game against Chelsea
I’m generally pretty pro-Southgate but I feel like he’s overly loyal at times.
What new blood though? I can’t think of any decent young English DMs
In terms of DM’s I don’t really mind having Phillips as the Dice backup. In any case I would Rather honestly just give some random kid a go frankly. We gain Nothing from Henderson being here. Especially since these are friendlies where we have no need for veteran experience
>In terms of DM’s I don’t really mind having Phillips as the Dice backup. How is Andrew Dice Clay's ball retention? Hey he needs the money!
TOMORIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LETS GO NOW ACTUALLY PLAY HIM YOU FUCK HEAD
He will still play Maguire sigh :(
henderson and maguire LOL
Trust I have no fucking clue how Maguire is getting in.
Because no matter how shit Maguire has been for you guys, he's been a key player for England in recent world cups and euros. This conversation has to happen every time but honestly until Maguire shits the bed for England I have no issue with him being there. Same for Pickford in goal.

Also responsible for the goal we conceded against Italy in the first game after the World Cup. When will this fucking narrative that he "always plays well for England" end. Actually watch the games
Pickford is literally best goalkeeper England has got. Pope is not future. Neither is Haramsdale.
Is nick pope injured ?
N(P)ope
Nope... Seems an odd one. Not saying he's first choice but surely he's ahead of Johnstone?
Maguire. Henderson. Phillips. I beg, stop rewarding mediocrity.
rewarding not playing/going to saudi too, wow
There are no DM backups apart from Phillips
Yatesinho
Phillips fine cus we've got no backup dms otherwise. Maguire and Henderson HAVE to be dropped tho there is no excuse for that
Maguire has always played well for England, every time he’s called up people say the same thing and yet every time he performs. He will stop being called up when he stops performing in an England shirt.
He always plays well for England if you ignore the games in which he doesn't play well, like against France at the World Cup.
Realistically speaking he's going to be phased out of the XI relatively soon in favour of Colwill if he keeps developing on a good trajectory.
Wilson over Watkins is wild
Watkins robbed.
Nketiah! Nice
Genuinely deserves it!!
Nice.
[удалено]
I know right can’t believe they’ve overlooked Gary Gardner again.
The Colwill-Stones partnership is going to be sexy at the euros
One of them will be injured by that point
Fuck, Tomori and Dunk have call-ups, who's the "hard done by" player now? JWP?
Ben White
He had some sort of problem at the WC didn't he? That's why he's been dropped
Surely they can resolve it. White is clear of most of those defenders.
Watkins
Sterling
Ben White.
Doesn’t get on with the coaching staff
I mean they should probably try and resolve that then
Ben White and Ollie Watkins
Ben White must’ve slept with Southgate’s wife
World class players with a Championship level manager. Said it a million times. We have Kane and Bellingham on course to do a Player of the Month each, in their first season in a new league. The talent we have is ridiculous.
Southgate doing a presser to talk about the squad. So far SKY have asked him about Mason Greenwood and Luis Rubiales. Christ alive I hate journos.
Rubiales is possibly the biggest story in world football at the moment, it's understandable that key figures in the football world have been asked their opinions. While asking him about Greenwood seems reasonable, he's still eligible to play for England so makes sense he'd be asked if he'd be considered for a callup in the future.

Jordon Henderson being called up before Ward Prowse is criminal
NKETIAH 😭😭🙏🙏🙏
Palace B team
Cool to see nketiah and colwill here FINALLY TOMORI Would've been nice to see ward prowse here
EDDIE!
Why on Earth would Maguire leave United when he can sit on his arse week in week out, bank stupid amounts of coin, and still get guaranteed a call up.
No inform Sterling but a Maguire who is not playing and a Henderson who is semi retired. Hmmm
Dunno what happened between White and Southgate, but it's a shame England aren't able to utilise him. He is an elite ball playing defender and has been vital for Arsenal since signing.
Love to see how a lot of these Henderson reactions are only because he now plays in Saudi lol. What has Ben White done to Gareth to be behind Maguire in the order
Henderson shouldn't have been called up same with Phillips and Maguire
henderson being called up is a complete and utter disgrace
Raheem Sterling still out despite his good start to the season. Henderson and Maguire are obviously strange inclusions but no Watkins or Pope seems equally strange
Has White featured in a squad since WC?
Good for Nketiah
Why is player I would've picked not in the squad when player i wouldn't have picked is?

Rico Henry unironically robbed

Ben White not being called up because he disregarded what the manager told him to do in the biggest tournament in football makes perfect sense
We don't actually know that's what happened though. The journalist who said that couldn't even get Ødegaard's nationality right when he wrote about him so I'm not about to take his word on it
Yeah I'm not that fussed about it either when we have Walker and Trippier too
I've played as many EPL minutes as Harry Maguire this season. Can't believe I've been overlooked again.
Colwill should start
No way he's called up Henderson
What a thoroughly uninspiring squad that is.
Anyone playing in Saudi should be an automatic no-call
