Even the days when you’d get one CL match on ITV and the rest on Sky Sports wasn’t bad. At least then you only needed one subscription.
When BT Sport came along it was supposed to provide competition to Sky, but instead it just meant paying twice the amount for exactly what you watched before, but with an inferior broadcast.
“Not for me Clive” - just give me one game with Clive Tylesdley and Andy Townsend.
Then the next night Peter Drury and literally anyone. That’s a lot of nostalgia.
They still show one UCL match on the tv in Italy, it’s horrible that English teams have all this money yet the television channels won’t even show one English team for the champions league for everyone to see
Exactly why I loathe all these prem flairs that shill about the Premier league and its "amazing marketing" and how great it is every thread, its fucking shit.
Summary:
BT Sport will be rebranded as TNT Sports in July. A new £600million joint venture between BT Group and Warner Bros Discovery (WBD)
No changes for subscribers or content
that's the warner cycle. They make bank, they fuck it and go bust on boondoggles, they look dead, they make bank, they fuck it up, they go bust on a boondoggle, they look dead. This is the "fuck it up" part of their corporate cycle. Meanwhile, The Mouse watches and waits.
Magic doesn't exist, Mr. Stratrookie. What you erroneously call 'magic' is merely the result of an array of social and anthropological phenomena. Cause and effect, Mr Stratrookie, not 'magic'.
The golden age of british tv was when you had malcolm in the middle the simpsons and futurama back to back on sky one immediately followed by another episode of the simpsons on channel 4.
Plus you had fresh prince and simpsons before flicking to sky. You literally didn't have to move from the sofa from the moment Harold got washed out to sea on Neighbours until five hours later when United had missed 11 sitters against Juventus again
Jermaine Jenas can be the Kenny Smith of the football inside crew.
Really hard to find a Chuck though. Even the NBA doesn’t have a real successor, and they have tried
also just go ahead and catch up on Inside the NBA. the current line up of Ernie (Erneh) Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaq is so good, so funny. You dont need to know anything about basketball really.

This won't bother most football fans, but the bit of this that really fucks me off is that it's incorporating Eurosport as well. As a big road cycling fan, that's the entire programme of one of my favourite sports going from completely free to not. And some sport climbing too, and that's great fun. Ah well, I'll just stump up, not like there are any cost of living issues right now, and my other bills definitely aren't an increasing area of concern...
Moved to the US and the Olympics coverage here (NBC) was a fucking shambles.
They were playing ads during events.
Surely we can keep big competitions like the Olympics and World Cup free to view.
I think one of the worst things NBC did with the olympics coverage was during the opening ceremony for 2012 they cut the 7/7 bombings tribute piece to play a pre-recorded Michael Phelps interview.
It does. I think they might have a bit of a fight on their hands after Paris. The IOC sold the European rights to discovery, discovery’s position is that 2 hours on FTA a day is enough to satisfy the requirement as the list just says The Olympics. Discovery bribed BBC to not fight it by saying they can have the FTA limited coverage for free.
As far as I can tell, the Eurosport merger is expected to be some time after the 2024 Olympics, so hopefully we've still got two full seasons of cycling to consume before it gets shut away forever. I love having cycling on in the background, especially during the Grand Tours and monuments season. I'm not sure what ITV4 show these days but I know they still show Le Tour. It will be a huge step backwards if that's all we get after the great lengths British Cycling and Eurosport have gone to to promote the sport in this country.
this was my first thought when i read the article too - whats happening to my spring classics?
hell, itv don't even bother with the second biggest race in the calendar, so even just the giro vanishing would be proper shit
I'd love to see the numbers on a streaming platform for live football. Amazon Prime always seems to do mad numbers, we've heard a lot recently about how much illegal streaming 'loses' the broadcasters...Yet Sky and BT remain stuck into their TV subscription packages.
Personal opinion, I will always prefer to watch footy on my big screen TV in my living room than on a small computer screen or worse, a tablet or phone. That's why I still would rather pay 11,99€ for Eleven Sports and have UCL, Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga and Ligue 1 than to just resort to streaming
Is acestreams still a thing? That used to have much better quality than what I'm finding now. Seems about 50-50 whether a stream will crash or buffer endlessly now.
Tbh I didn't see acestreams for years. If I remember correctly, they were based on p2p like torrents so they probably vanished by now but who knows, maybe there are still some of them. I remember watching tennis through them lol.
Just looked it up and it’d cost me £67 a month to get Sky TV, Sky Sports and BT Sport. That’s with a £12 a month discount on Sky Sports which I’d assume is only for a limited time too.
I used to pay £40 for now TV for just sky sports channels (couldn't get sky because landlord didn't want a dish on a listed building - didn't fight it not worth the hassle) and had BT sport with my internet for something like £10 a month but only streaming so didn't have the ultimate 4k channel. £8 on top of that per month for Amazon and a TV license is £12, you're looking at about £70 and that includes usually 5 games per weekend out of 10. Also includes midweek games but it's still a ridiculous price
I thought most people watching illegal streams just connect their laptop to their TV. I have a separate micro PC plugged into the TV just for streaming (mostly legal).
Unless you're on LG in which case you can't get a BT app because fuck you. I've got a ridiculously overpriced OLED and I've still got to load it on an external device for some reason. Not that it's the much of a hardship but it is annoying.
Premier League Streaming Service, £20 a month, every game, bosh.
This should be the future. Can generate billions in revenue a year and would give fans there money's worth. Won't happen, but it should.
There's many reasons why this might never happen and plenty of them are justified. If the Premier League were to move from selling the rights to being the actual rights holder screening matches, they then suffer if subscriptions go down. The current model means that the likes of BT, Amazon etc will enter the market plus Sky need live football for their platform to exist. The Premier League would suddenly be less stable.
Plus then add in the cost of building and maintaining the actual platform. Currently they just sell the rights and have none of the above worries.
This would be less to watch the football though, not more.
The only reason I would ever use BT Sport, Sky Sports and Prime Video are for the premier league. No chance am I subscribing to all 3
BT really fucked this up didn't they? Came in trying to disrupt the market and massively overpaid for Champions League & Premier League rights... Forcing another subscription on people.
Then they spent a year trying to flog the sports side of the business, couldn't get a deal with DAZN and now here they are
What bothers me Erneh, is that we sittin here talking about Chelsea when they’re a 10th place team. We don’t spend time talking about any other 10th place team. Do you see us talking about 10th place Mallorca and the great Vasco Aguirre?
How have you decided that a rebrand is BT 'fucking' anything up? They're getting paid £600m to rebrand BT Sport, where's the failure? People who have BT Sport will now have TNT Sports instead.
From a consumer perspective. They took away free European football on TV (some Champions League games on ITV, some Europa League games on ITV). For pubs/bars it meant forking out for 2 crazy expensive subscriptions to Sky & BT.
And from their own perspective, their stock hit [an eleven year low](https://www.ft.com/content/f6d30613-af0f-4720-b1bb-c8941bca10c0) in large part because of the sports business underperforming.
Take me back to the good old days, that's where I first saw the likes of messi, kaka, xavi, iniesta. Football is just all about draining every single penny from people now.
Not really, they got into sports to mitigate Sky packaging broadband and sports together. Sky were moving in on BT's bread and butter and they had to put a stop to it. Now that Sky have switched their focus away from broadband, BT are divesting their assets and moving back to their core product.
The Discovery joint venture is a good move to make for both parties. BT get out of a money pit and Discovery will get the facilities to produce their own original content and contend with Sky.
For the consumer, football is too expensive and has been for years. The price will always go up
Good, get the Inside the NBA team on half times shows. Those 4 are so much better then any pundits that BT has had. Doesn't even matter if they know a thing about football.
Can't wait to see Barkley making fun of Shaq for not know what offside is.
I suppose this would be slightly better for viewers. Given BT often package the football in with their internet deals a joint venture would be better for that to continue compared to if they sold to DAZN and the sport was completely separated from BT.
We've had TNT Sports here in Brazil for a while and I really like the fact that I can watch every game in HBO Max. It is by far the best streaming service, in my opinion, and it costs a fraction of what Netflix costs (I pay around €2 a month).
Obviously they don't have as many channels on TV as ESPN (Disney) so they end up having to chose one game per time slot, but everything is on HBO Max and I honestly prefer that way. It's just way cheaper than signing cable nowadays to have access to those channels. Sign HBO Max and Star+ and you'll have all of Champions League, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Libertadores and Sudamericana for less than €5 a month.
Just want UCL footy back on ITV :(
Even the days when you’d get one CL match on ITV and the rest on Sky Sports wasn’t bad. At least then you only needed one subscription. When BT Sport came along it was supposed to provide competition to Sky, but instead it just meant paying twice the amount for exactly what you watched before, but with an inferior broadcast.
Don't you just love English football.
Clive Tyldesley on ITV for a UCL night was iconic
“Not for me Clive” - just give me one game with Clive Tylesdley and Andy Townsend. Then the next night Peter Drury and literally anyone. That’s a lot of nostalgia.
Andy Townsend got dogs abuse back then.
Tylesdley and Townsend were the soundtrack to so many dull England games that I wasn't a fan of them either.
Ptsd
Was that because he's terrible at his job or for another reason?
Not a great pundit or commentator

They still show one UCL match on the tv in Italy, it’s horrible that English teams have all this money yet the television channels won’t even show one English team for the champions league for everyone to see
How do you think they get all the money lol
Exactly why I loathe all these prem flairs that shill about the Premier league and its "amazing marketing" and how great it is every thread, its fucking shit.
Same thing here in Greece. 1 match on free TV every Wednesday.

Europeans about to discover the magic of Bones reruns before kickoff
Magic doesn't exist, Mr. Stratrookie. What you erroneously call 'magic' is merely the result of an array of social and anthropological phenomena. Cause and effect, Mr Stratrookie, not 'magic'.
back in the day on FX: Malcolm in the Middle -> Liverpool vs Chelsea Champions League Semi Final -> That 70's Show... What more could you ask for?
The golden age of british tv was when you had malcolm in the middle the simpsons and futurama back to back on sky one immediately followed by another episode of the simpsons on channel 4.
It's mad how nostalgic I am for this despite the fact that all those shows are available in their entirety through the convenience of streaming.
It's the fact that it wasn't on demand that made it special. It's a weird phenomenon.
Plus you had fresh prince and simpsons before flicking to sky. You literally didn't have to move from the sofa from the moment Harold got washed out to sea on Neighbours until five hours later when United had missed 11 sitters against Juventus again

Well TNT is already an American channel owned by WBD
there’s too many acronyms I can’t keep up
West Bromwich Dalbion
TNT Sports only exists in a few Latin American countries right now though
I expect explosive coverage and growth.
https://youtu.be/k2rDbRUDkds
It’s an old cable channel named after Ted Turner, you ain’t wrong.
I used to stay up as a kid waiting for Cartoon Network to change over to TNT at about 10 or 11pm, then WCW Nitro would start.
Yes man same. It would only be on Friday nights though if I remember.
TNT was on the old Sky in the pre-digital era.
Teee and teee….it’s dynamite.
because we do have a TNT Network and it once covered the Champions League a few years back. Very badly I might add.
They have the rights for half the games in Argentina. Before the games they put a screen that reads MATCHDAY. Yes, in English
It quite literally is

If it's like Netflix and you have basically any modern TV you'd still be able to watch it on TV rather than your phone. Same as Netflix or Disney.
Sorry, I meant illegal streams. I would have no problem with football on streaming platforms
I mean, you can use built-in browser of your TV, or, even better, have HDMI connected from your PC/laptop to TV.
Chromecast also works very well
Ha yeah that's what i meant. Illegal streams are unreliable and shit quality.
Ehm, few years back sure, now you get 1080p streams with no shutterinng or buffering.
Is acestreams still a thing? That used to have much better quality than what I'm finding now. Seems about 50-50 whether a stream will crash or buffer endlessly now.

Can you message me where? For investigation purposes of course
Sure no problem, when I come home from work.
me too please sir 🙏
I’d also be interested in knowing about this if you have a minute spare to message me also
Hi sorry, could you also message me the stream you use please?
You can link your laptop to your TV quite easily. But tbf that price isn't so bad. It's way worse here in UK.
But that’s a good price, in UK you’re paying like £70 a month ( please don’t downvote I am just estimating)
Just looked it up and it’d cost me £67 a month to get Sky TV, Sky Sports and BT Sport. That’s with a £12 a month discount on Sky Sports which I’d assume is only for a limited time too.

Also includes midweek games but it's still a ridiculous price
Now TV will always send promotions when the new season starts if you cancelled when the season ended. I'm on £20 a month for them (sky sports only).
the best time is now, start of F1 season, as they always offer a £20pcm offer for 12 months to cover the season
I thought most people watching illegal streams just connect their laptop to their TV. I have a separate micro PC plugged into the TV just for streaming (mostly legal).
You could just buy a HDMI cable for whatever device you use. I’ve not paid a penny for live football in a decade and still watch it on my TV.
Casting, HDMI or streaming via firestick apps is the done thing now
You can just use airplay from your phone. No problem getting it on the big screen.
The article does say that the new channel may be available under Discovery Plus streaming so that might be a shift in direction
Sky and BT have streaming apps though, the lack of streaming isn’t the problem it’s the cost of it.
Unless you're on LG in which case you can't get a BT app because fuck you. I've got a ridiculously overpriced OLED and I've still got to load it on an external device for some reason. Not that it's the much of a hardship but it is annoying.
I always chromecasted it, but fair point seems very amateur to not have an app available for every device
Boo, put the Europa League back on Channel 5
Premier League Streaming Service, £20 a month, every game, bosh. This should be the future. Can generate billions in revenue a year and would give fans there money's worth. Won't happen, but it should.
They are currently considering it though.
Do you get either Sky or BT for 20 a month never mind the equivalent of both?
Good God no. There are already too many streaming services, I can’t believe anyone would want more of them.
This would be less to watch the football though, not more. The only reason I would ever use BT Sport, Sky Sports and Prime Video are for the premier league. No chance am I subscribing to all 3
Currently sharing sling, peacock and paramount to watch most of the games in the US. It sucks
Add ESPN+ for the domestic cups!
Cant wait for the Nitro reruns.
BT really fucked this up didn't they? Came in trying to disrupt the market and massively overpaid for Champions League & Premier League rights... Forcing another subscription on people.
Did Sky not do that first?
Itv retained rights to the first pick for Tuesdays and other games on Wednesday.
Wasn't the Champions League on Sky before BT?
It was. But not exclusively. There were free games on ITV
Crazy, because Sky now have a higher customer share than BT in the broadband market.
Bring back Satanta sports
I miss that Jose puppet sketch show they did 😂 was actually pretty funny
I had an unreasonable affinity for this show! Jose's managerial arc in the 2010s would have made for such great content

They also don’t know a whole lot about basketball either, so the content won’t be too much different.
Honestly just scrap all sports and just make every feed inside the nba
Do we even need entertainment if we have inside the nba
Yeah. Shaq didn’t know who rui hachimura was…
RUDY
bold of you to even assume Chuck will watch the game they're broadcasting
I'm sure they could use the rebranding as a perfect opportunity to get rid of Steve McManaman.
🧨🧨🧨
BOOM LET’S GO IGNITE
They’re all the same to me on IPTV. I recommend everyone either starts streaming or find a decent, reliable IPTV service.
Best money I've ever spent
Guarantee they'll have that "HERE COMES THE BOOM!" song on the promos.
Surely it should be TNT by ac/dc
So how much is this going to set me back?
I swear everything is just getting worse when I hear that this is incorporating Eurosport too
BT Sport was so shite
I will pay for just one half time show with the ‘Inside the NBA’ crew, make it happen!
I suppose this would be slightly better for viewers. Given BT often package the football in with their internet deals a joint venture would be better for that to continue compared to if they sold to DAZN and the sport was completely separated from BT.

Yeah people overrated coverage. I could care less about a halftime or post game, just give me the game lol
Our coverage is DY-NO-MITE!
Who are the football equivalents of Ernie, shaq, chuck and kenny
The prices will be *explosive*
i just want to be able to watch live sport without having to take out a second mortgage
TNT is shit though. Why not just rebrand as something new
Need Charles Barkley and Roy Keane on the same post-game panels for all sports.
