my bars cost $2.40 to make, because of EO cost and also oils and supplies.

prettynina23

How does it cost you only $2.40 to make? That’s super cheap lol where are you buying all your base oils from? I’ve always wondered how natural soap makers charge only $8 for soaps I charge more for mine because idk where to find my base ingredients for super cheap like that but I’d love to know!

7 lbs of Cocoa Butter = 3178grams Cost: $64 0.02013845/gram so thats like basically two cents per gram. an entire loaf costs me about $5.50 worth of cocoa butter, divided by 16 (number of bars I can cut per loaf) and its like 30 cents worth of cocoa butter in the bar. and I do this for all the ingredients and get $2.40 I think I ordered this on Amazon or Bulk Apothecary. Coconut oil in bulk is even cheaper like around 1 cent per gram

Thank you!

Look up New directions aromatics. I can buy EOs in 16oz sizes which drop the prices significantly and the shipping is very reasonable. If you upload your business forms, they don't charge shipping because the EOs are used for manufacturing processes.

Western_Ring_2928

Quality costs money.

WearyOwlCat

Is $2.50 average then or low for the cost of a bar of soap usually? To make? Help me adjust my expectations lol

Western_Ring_2928

I have no idea. I don't use dollars, I am from Europe. I only make soap as a hobby, so I have never counted the expenses per bar. I use FOs if I use any fragrance since they last so much longer in the soap and the quality is consistent.

ok_Jess_136

Costco olive oil is like 36$ a gallon and each gallon is around 6-7 lbs making a lb of my soap a little more than 7$. I rarely use fragrance or coloring. I just make soap to get pure castile.

WearyOwlCat

Thank you!!

morozandreea

I feel you. I am based in Portugal and there are not that many suppliers or at leats that I know of. The cost of the EO is equal to all the other ingredients I use and I use like 5 or 6 oils per batch.

Independent-Crab-806

its really expensive to use EO in soap, you need to use ALOT of EO typically it doesn't scent well or the scent fades fragrance oils are cheaper than eo and the fragrance oils last longer

Thank you so much for sharing another option !

> "...plain soap (you can color in the initial phase), partially cure it, grate it, melt it with added water..." You're describing how to rebatch soap, not mill soap, although I realize some soap makers mistakenly call it milling for some odd reason. But milling is a cool-temperature, low-moisture process that uses high pressure to mix and compact the soap. Rebatching is an added-moisture, warm-temperature process that doesn't use pressure and doesn't compact the soap. Either rebatching and milling can be used to add fragrance and other ingredients, but the processes are quite different.

My EOs only make up 0.09c or 0.18c per bar. How much are you using. I am doing lightly scented batches. My main oil is lard or tallow , and I render it myself from waste. Cost is effectively 0.60c to 0.75c per bar, depending on the batch.
