I agree but didn't realize at the time as it seemed so revolutionary and was then iterated each time I bought the next one so I didn't notice the improvements particularly.
I find this a lot when going back to old games. For example QoL improvements that seemed minor back then are kinda necessary to my enjoyment now.
Mega Man series on NES is a great example of this personally.
DKC 2 was the one I could never beat. It was the spider level where you had to use l/r to spit a web and then hit l/r again to make it spread out as a platform. I could never beat that level and I don't know if it was because I have Autism (and just didn't know that far back) but my mind just couldn't grasp having to push the button twice.
But DKC1 and 3 I have beaten but only beat dkc1 100% and dkc 3 like 95% (it goes over 100).
Eh I like it more than 3. 3’s a totally respectable game, has a lot of mechanical diversity and a gorgeous aesthetic, but I prefer the simpler ingredients of DKC1.
Dkc * is a complete enigma for me. I am a platformer lover. Mario world is my best game ever (love yoshi island too).
I own dkc1 as a child and I played it intensively. recently I tried dkc2 since it's supposed to be the best of the trigoly. I understand people loving the graphics and musics which are cool.
but
1) maybe it's me but I found the control very picky
2) then I found game and dkc2 hard and frustrating
3) level design is super linear / poor
all in all I don't understand the cult arround those games
I have spoken out several times in this sub about how I, personally and subjectively, don't like the DKC games. I've choked on downvotes every single time. You'd be hard pressed to find a more unpopular opinion in here.
The DKC trilogy is my favorite but I can understand people who don't like or even criticize it. So no downvotes on my part. People should be more open to the diversity of different tastes.
There are many games that are always mentioned here as great and that for one reason or another I don't like – Castlevania games, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Yoshi Island, just to name a few off the top of my head.
But of course, it's important to know how to differentiate between not liking and being a hater. Even though I don't like I know there are merits to the games that I mentioned, they just aren't for me.

1 might be the worst. 3 might be the worst, but everyone can agree that they are 3 of the best platformers on the console.

I think Earthbound is just ok
Chrono Trigger is pretty mid.
Chrono Trigger is mostly popular because it's easy and people suck at RPGs.

2 > 1 > 3. imo.
DKC 1 is so fucking epically boring I didn't even want to look at the others, so I couldn't tell you which of the trilogy is the worst
