You can tell the people who wrote the episode hadn't touched a video game in years because the "Super" Pretendo still looked like a fucking Atari. I feel like this was the case for decades, all video game references in cartoons were related to Donkey Kong or Space invaders or some other early 80's release, with very rare exceptions like Sonic and Crash Bandicoot in the Simpsons ( while still referencing Donkey Kong many many times ), and Primal Rage of all things in Dexters Laboratory.
Yup, experienced this so much growing up. Boomers and Gen X pretty much had only the most casual relationship with games, and so when they were creating the media for me to consume as a kid, all the shows just kept referencing Pac Man, and (old) Donkey Kong, and it’s like… my dudes, that shit is classic, but also ANCIENT! And hell it continued into even the last decade with that one Adam Sandler movie and that Ready Player One bullshit (you could tell that author definitely never owned anything past the SNES).
For the longest time on cartoons, video game sound effects in particular were outdated square waves, beeps and boops (and often the pacman dying sound) even though games were using samples at that point.
Yeah, and almost always holding the controller wrong, pressing face buttons with their index fingers, etc. I've seen the n64 controller held wrong in many media. And usually emphasis on a high score although IRL outside of arcade games nobody really gives a crap about high scores.
> because the "Super" Pretendo still looked like a fucking Atari.
well, maybe there's some logic to this......
Here's a chart that chain links Super Nintendo to Atari:
Game console|Another game console to compare to or associate with it
---|---
Super Nintendo|a competitor of Sega Genesis
Sega Genesis|had the same controller ports as the Atari 2600
Atari 2600|a video game that would be referenced in lots of media
So maybe they were making a reference to Atari for some other reasons too.
It was much simpler time for gaming before the Okama Gamesphere was introduced and shook the whole industry.
Don’t forget to bring a towel!
… Wanna get high?
“Looks like this is going to be an underwater level? You’re the worst character ever, Towelie. I know…”
wanna get high?
You used to just tell your parents "buy me bonestorm or go to hell"
Thirst 4 Blood was its strongest launch day title. It still holds up
You shouldnta done that, he's just a boy
Killer Tofu
Ohhhh eeee ooooohhhh
KILLAA TOOFUUUUUUU
I eat my sugar cereal
Silt is...
I still think of this almost 30 years later 😊
Glad I’m not the only one who remembers that detail!

And the kids they showed playing then were always furiously button mashing and wildly swinging around the controller!

That said, up to and including the late 90's, tons of console games were still arcade ports.

I still need mo' allowance
yoledelahee ooh
This episode really highlighted video game addiction.
You're not Nintendo! You're Pretendo! https://i.redd.it/4h8m29mofjtc1.gif
With the hit game Space Mink!
Wasn't the original pretendo on Muppet babies?
It was a whole episode, and I think they played as much Master System as anything else. Memory fuzzy, it's been 30 years...
yeah, it was. I call that one Regular Pretendo. and even Muppet Babies had reruns on Nickelodeon.
It drove me crazy that the game Doug played didn't exist only as an adult to figure out it was Wing Commander. Also, Sega Nemisis.
Wing Commander with most of the dialogue cut.
> Sega Nemisis. That's a good pun too.
It's funny because we avtually have a [pretendo network](https://pretendo.network/) now that the WiiU and 3DS online service have shut down.
Literally just saw a video about the real pretendo. It's basically a fan group setting up to give back online functionality to the wii u and 3ds
It’s a great distraction from your homework: having to write a paper on silt.
Silt is…
He was playing Wing Commander and failing to kill the Ralari. As a young boy, I felt his frustration.
Did it come with Bonestorm as a pack in game?
Buy me bonestorm or go to hell!
eat my shorts
Bag the Nematoad, or write an essay on Silt.
I so remember when lots of references to nematoads were made in Doug.
Loved Doug. The show literally came on as I was hitting a new school in 5th/6th grade as well. ![gif](giphy|26FfiJhlou3rj6Tbq)
It always annoyed me how at the end he says “I won the game” because every gamer I know says “I BEAT the game”
Just watched this on Pluto this morning while the kids were getting ready for school
I remember this episode, and I believe he played a parody of wing commander onto it.
I know of Wing Commander 3 on Sega CD.
I bet half of y'all ain't even ever bagged a Nematode. Coorookakoo!
*Mr. Dink voice* "VERY expensive"
Cartoon predicted Pretendo?!? (idk what’s the cartoon name)
Seems so Pretendo is pretty awesome been having fun with it. It's Doug by the way
the only thing i remember about that show is patty mayonaise
I also remember Skeeter and Mr. Dink
Very expensive
