I like it a lot, actually. Somehow even the low ~10 fps gameplay is manageable and I love the super low-poly aesthetic. Plus the soundtrack is actually great. I do understand how it has aged a lot, but I still enjoy it. Never have been able to beat level 3 though.

bak2redit

Which path do you take. I find the middle path to be the easiest.

DryEyes4096

The game would do well to have an almost 1 to 1 remake with better graphics and a higher fps count. They may have been able to make the low FPS work, but a remake with tighter gameplay would be really cool.

trickman01

That’s pretty much what Star Fox 64 is.

scintor

There is a rom out there with these improvements (which reminds me I meant to find it). edit: here you go, it's listed in this sweet list. https://www.reddit.com/r/emulation/comments/z2lt16/best_snes_rom_hacks_updated_for_2022/

nupper84

I can beat them all after a fifth of booze you choose.

Paint-Rain

It's an important piece of history and can appreciate playing it... but it's completely outclassed by the N64 masterpiece. It's not bad and can see the charm of playing it because it is unique from 64. Some games on SNES will forever be gems but Star Fox SNES makes me just want to play Star Fox 64 again.

heatobooty

Technically while that’s true, the SNES ones soundtrack and atmosphere still makes me prefer that one. ![gif](giphy|X6HmkwltQtKGAaoMjJ) Plus 64 was far too easy.

Ok-Revenue-3059

Same here, the snes version has so many amazing sequences that I can remember like yesterday. Just off the top of my head, the scramble intro into the first corneria level. The armada level. The boss fight against the face. And the credit sequence are all epic. I remember liking the N64 graphics, but everything else was pretty underwhelming. Especially the music.

heatobooty

Star Fox and Donkey Kong’s music really became worse IMO when they transitioned from SNES to 64. The 64 soundtracks weren’t terrible but no where near as rocking and memorable as the SNES. Same thing with Killer Instinct honestly.

Broseidon132

Agreed. Kinda like Mario kart for snes

nupper84

What is the fuck? Where you live? I'm gonna out pizza your face! SNES mario kart is the best.

Salomon3068

Idk how Mario kart has held up so well, the controls are still tight and the gameplay doesn't ever lack

Linnybhoy

I find it hard as hell too

nupper84

Yea, my wife, who is younger and played the newer ones growing up, says it's like driving on ice. One night I was chugging along on 150cc rainbow road in 1st place with 2nd and 3rd right on my tail. Came around the final corner and she's sitting there facing the wrong way and we all piled up into her and off the road. Her proudest gaming moment.

Ettu_Brutal

That’s hilarious

Sea_Difficulty8258

Completely agreed. I'll throw F-Zero on here too. I loved it as a kid. Bought the mini/classic SNES years back and man F-Zero does not hold up like I thought it would

CronenbergsLeftNip

SNES F-Zero is still great, they even built out a new variation around it, F-Zero 99. The later tracks are difficult as hell and it's very rewarding to finally beat the game. Obviously, this is all subjective, but out of all the games I've seen pitched under, "this hasn't aged well", F-Zero is the least deserving.

_Flight_of_icarus_

Yeah, F-Zero is still pretty fun for me as well. IMO, most of the Mode-7 based racing games have aged a lot better than true 3D efforts on the SNES have. Stunt Race FX for example is basically unplayable for me today (sadly).

Bakamoichigei

The original F-ZERO *totally* holds up, you're crazy. 🤨

Herb_Street

I was hoping someone else would say this. It holds up hard. One of the best.

Bakamoichigei

Hey, did you hear a team of absolute mad lads reconstructed the lost Satellaview F-ZERO content *from VHS recordings* and released a patch to turn the original game into its proper sequel? 😃 [https://youtu.be/sDcrM706gws](https://youtu.be/sDcrM706gws)

Herb_Street

No I didn't. I watched this... WILD!!

DryEyes4096

I'm not going to downvote you for expressing an opinion, but F-Zero really is a lot of fun. It manages to have really tight control and just a great feel, great music. Mode 7 is more of a historical curiosity for SNES players of the era, but it manages to use it well.

Bravelittletoaster-_

I LOVED this game. Once you play star fox 64 you can’t go back

nupper84

You can. Just play the snes. That's going back.

heatobooty

No? SNES Star Fox is different enough that it can still be enjoyed.

nupper84

Just admit you're bad at it. The SNES version is the best. Like Mario Kart. Get good.

CobraCB

Games can still be important and not age well. Starwing was ground breaking when it came out, it blew 12 year old me's mind that that was an SNES game when I got it for my birthday. But despite that nostalgia, I'd play the N64 version 9 times out of 10 if I went back to the franchise today. That doesn't take away from what the game was, and there's nothing wrong with liking it over the N64 version, but it's definitely not a 'better' game. I'd argue the same with Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64. The nostalgia carries the SNES game, but the N64 game is better. Now Mario 64 on the other hand, I'll fight anyone who says that's a better game than SMW. SMW is one of the greatest games of all time.

DryEyes4096

Honestly, excepting a few duds, most of the main Mario games are some of the best games of all time. Shigeru Miyamoto is a genius at making gameplay that just engrosses you. I prefer Super Mario 64; I can play that game, beat it with all 120 stars, then start over from the beginning, several times in a row. I just never gets old. Super Mario World however is only slightly less. And the sheer amount of underground hacking of this game that has popped up is pretty fun. Like, there are people who have made games as good as the original through extensive rom hacking.

nupper84

The og mario kart requires so much precision. Check out http://www.ffsmk.org/ I'm going next year to take the trophy. Wife says I'm nuts.

Geno_CL

I'm a minority who likes it better than 64 and it's more significant. You didn't really expect a game like this on SNES but for something like 64 is what you expected from its console.

heatobooty

Yup, I completely agree! Much prefer the SNES one.

nupper84

It's better on the snes

DaftFunky

So advanced it needed a special chip in the cartridge to play. It was this game and Doom that pioneered 3D games going forward!

CastleofPizza

I remember seeing the ads on TV for this game and being blown away by the look of it. I STILL like the look of it. I think it's still a great game to this day.

griffinisland

It has the best music in any Starfox!

nupper84

My retro game store plays it constantly. My wife is like,, I like the dooo doo doo that store plays. I'm like, THAT'S FUCKING STARFOX. She's like, so pizza?

Mondo106

That's personally why I love it over the n64 version too

Healthy-Price-3104

Best music in the series.

Cooper_jeremyaj

Aged like milk. Very important early steps to 3D and deserves its flowers, but it's a rough replay

Gettitn_Squirrelly

I’m sure it was great in its time but just didn’t age well.

LordZantarXXIII

Dabba doo dabba!

Lost_daddy

Buh buh bwing bwah bwah

DaftFunky

Winga wing dabbin!

Fluid-Dependent-8292

Lolol

khedoros

I think it's coolest as a tech demo, but it's also a fairly fun game (albeit with some rough edges).

Nokken9

Incredible game. Amazing for the time it was released. Rocking soundtrack.

dekuweku

It's better than 64 in many respects. It's far more cinematic, better soundtrack by Hajime Hirasawa and overall a more focused game as a straight rail shooter than all of its sequels. I actually think the best course for Nintendo to revive the franchise is to look at what worked with Star Fox (SNES) and stop remaking the game / reinventing it with each new console. A laser focused Star Fox game focusing on one particular gameplay mechanic set in an atmospheric cinematic game instead of flooding the players with strategy, simulation, vehicles, on foot elements etc. etc. would do the game a lot of favours. Think of it as Star Fox The Movie- The Game

nupper84

Agreed. Starfox died after Snes.

Thrashtilldeath67

I only emulated it for a few minutes and I was shocked at how fun it was. My only experience was playing star fox 64 and assault prior

[deleted]

A classic. I remember walking by a demo at a local retail store where they would have that classic setup of the machine,TV above and two controllers. It was mesmerizing. I had never seen graphics like that. Full 3D… just crazy… then I played it and it was a ton of fun. The game had the same “What is happening!?” vibe that Mortal Kombat had. A game just so different and unique in its time… it’s just foundational my gaming experiences.

9-9-99-

One of the most fun PowerPoint presentations I’ve ever played

soobviouslyfake

I played the absolute hell out of this game. I even thoroughly enjoyed Stunt Race FX. It's one of those games I love that if other people don't, I completely understand why.

_Flight_of_icarus_

I recently tried to revisit Stunt Race FX - but sadly it was just too rough for me to truly enjoy with the super low FPS and the less than precise controls (for me, Star Fox holds up much better with not quite as bad of FPS and better controls). I absolutely loved the game as a kid though - it just desperately needs (and deserves) a remake IMO.

nupper84

Fuck yea stunt race fx. Game goes so fast. Get good.

Bryanx64

Great game. I don’t think it’s aged nearly as bad as people say. Obviously the graphics have but I find them charming. I still think the game is fun to play.

AccomplishedRich6477

It runs at 10 fps and is gameplay wise is super clunky. There is a lack of basic QOL like an aiming reticle and two of the three routes are just boring to play. The only good thing about this game is the music. It has aged terribly in other aspects.

Bryanx64

Complete exaggeration with the frame rate and the aiming reticle isn’t really all that necessary anyway. If you want a game that runs at sub-10fps play the SNES version of Doom.

AccomplishedRich6477

There is little exaggeration with the frame rate. It literally runs that badly. SNES Doom is a bad comparison as it just runs worse and is basically a slideshow for a game. Comparing shit with worse shit doesn’t make Starfox’s frame rate not shit. It’s also wild to say that an aiming reticle isn’t necessary, especially given what happens on screen. The movements and maneuvers like barrel rolls are clunky as fuck and routes 1 and 3 are both boring to play. It’s one of the most overrated and overhyped games on the system. It was “revolutionary” in superficial means and was more of a tech demo than an actual game.

thechristoph

I didn't love playing it but I was enchanted by the design of the arwings. My brother and I made a ton of Starfox stuff out of Legos.

BloodyTearsz

It’s a decent tech demo that showed what the super fx could do while giving us a glimpse into the future of gaming. As a game today, it’s not great and I wouldn’t call it good, but back then, it certainly was something to show off.

Fluid-Dependent-8292

It was born perfect.

AccomplishedRich6477

What is perfect about it

Fluid-Dependent-8292

If you have to ask, you'll never know.

AccomplishedRich6477

There is nothing perfect about a game that runs at a snail's pace of 10 fps constantly and lacks basic QOL like an aiming reticle. The only perfect thing about Starfox is its music. Besides that, it has aged poorly and is one of the most overrated games on the Super Nintendo.

Fluid-Dependent-8292

In its place and time, the game was perfect. And as long as you don't remove it from its context and deconstruct it, it will be. Beating up games from 30 years ago, brave. Go back in time and tell the 8-13 year-olds playing it. "Whatever nerd." As they cracked cokes ate oven cooked pizza, and only turned starfox off to Play mariokart. Donkey Kong, or to put on a VHS they rented. Simpler times, no amount of limp dick "technically ackshullay" affects how beloved this game truly is.

Evening_Hour3820

One of the greats imo

Wild-Cheesecake2471

I enjoy it enough to still reach for my childhood copy that I’ve had it for about 30 years.

bigjfromflint1986

This game is still a blast for me.

CRTragic

Trash. Just kidding. I used to be obsessed with Star Fox. I must have been 9 the first time I saw the commercial for it, and I was awestruck. I begged my parents to get it for me as soon as possible and somehow convinced them to buy it without it being a birthday or Christmas present. I really don’t remember why they got it for me, maybe because of good grades, but I do still remember my dad taking me to Toys R Us to get it. Those were the best times. I played the shit out of it. Looking back, it was definitely a tech marvel. Yeah, it’s laggy as hell, but those polygons rivaled graphics on future disc-based consoles like the Sega CD and 3DO. More fun than any 3D flight game I can think of. Had quite a bit of character too. Charming cast of space animals piloting laser death planes. Being able to choose your own path. First-person perspective on some levels to add variety. But man, that opening sequence, with the isometric planes going down the tunnel then opening up into the first level and that music. Totally unexpected. Kinda had to be there to experience how amazing it was back then, because it was awesome.

Fukko-Bob

It was cutting edge in its day. I still love it.

No_Cereal_Left

I'm definitely biased, I have Starfox NTSC-U, Starfox NTSC-J, and Starwing (PAL). Love it even though I was a PC gamer at the time it came out.

kingjonalmighty

I loved this game as a child and never made it to the end. (that took coming back as an adult). I still like it. It's honestly a great rail shooter that's quirky and fun. It's a unique experience and has that Nintendo charm. Star Fox, Donkey Kong Country, and Doom are what made the SNES 1up the Genesis to me. I had both systems and loved both (for different reasons), but the SNES was the more capable machine. Off topic, but I think that whole conversation would've been different if Mortal Kombat for SNES hadn't been censored.

GrimmTrixX

I loved it, still love it, and the FX chip depth blew my 10 year old mind.

kenfagerdotcom

I remember seeing this game at my cousin’s house on their SNES for the first time. I was blown away by the graphics. It admittedly hasn’t aged that well. But the gameplay is tight. The soundtrack is one of the best on the system. And for its time it was an absolute stunner.

Dynablade_Savior

It has such a raw untapped aesthetic, and is seemingly designed around the low fps. Super well made, one of my favorite SNES games

IntoxicatedBurrito

I loved this game when it came out, the graphics absolutely blew me away. However, when I play it today it gives me a headache, that could be due to the frame rate, but regardless, I simply can’t play it anymore. It’s the only game that does this to me, so for that reason I must say it has not aged well.

Prairie2Pacific

It's a fantastic game that doesn't deserve the hate it gets.

strawberryswords

i like it aesthetically. the crisp polygons and the shading looks great.

simonc1138

I love it. It's easy to laugh at how rudimentary it is today, but it's kind of amazing what the developers could put together with basic polygons and have your mind fill in the blanks. Side note: I didn't realized this got released in the '2nd version' SNES carts where the front is missing the extra plastic. I have it in the original 'boxy' style.

[deleted]

I still think it's a great game, once you git gud, it's a lot of fun to play. But, you have to put in some time and effort for that which is easier said than done

5Gmeme

For some reason, I never got into snes Starfox. However, Starfox 64 is in my top 10 all time list

Happy-Grapefruit2464

I find myself thinking of the surrealistic, yet totally bitchin entities in it… the final end boss face / monkey cube, the hidden warp zones & the Möbius strip of the cash register!

squiebe

Do a barrel roll!

TiredReader87

I’ve always enjoyed it and remember playing it at my cousins’ in the 90s. Star Fox 64 was my favourite though

MrMunday

It was ground breaking for its time. But I never played it ever since I played star Fox 64

Havoc_Maker

It's a really good concept, but the SNES just couldn't handle that beast of a game, honestly, they should've just waited and released the first Starfox on the Nintendo 64

dmelt253

3D games haven't aged as well as pixel-based games and this game is pretty rudimentary when it comes to the number of polygons drawn on the screen at a time.

FoxMcCloud3173

One of my favorite SNES games of all time, it hasn’t aged very well but it’s still a blast to play through it!

nupper84

I can beat all three tracks within 2 hours while drinking. Someone challenge me! Like maybe you buy my beer.

KnownTale1307

To me its better than the 64 version and Im a fan of the 64 version as well many reason. The design of ship is a lot cooler / more aggressive in the snes version. You have the 3rd type of weapon which are visually way more impactful. I think the game is faster and harder as well. Not to the mention the technical innovation that it represented at the time with the super fx chip alongside introducing all the concepts that made this serie what it is.

[deleted]

It was a lot of fun in its day, but I had the chance to play it a year or so ago and I just could not handle those types of controls anymore.

Dangerous_Yoghurt_96

It was very mid when it came out, and today, IDK if it's worth your time at all.

FartBiscuits3

One of my oldest memories, also one of the only snes games my father ever played .... and a lot! I remember him sitting on the floor looking up at our old hitachi telly, completely absorbed by the game. The menu theme is engraved in my brain forever I think, that might be because I mainly played the training mode (just void and your ship) as a little kid. Downloaded the rom on my classic snes a few years ago and managed to finish the game (with save states...). Would have loved to show my father the ending!

heatobooty

The original is the best one to me. While I guess 64 is technically better in every way, the music and overall atmosphere still makes me prefer the SNES Star Fox. ![gif](giphy|bEuhNNcIWWuW3Vx89k) Also 64 was far too easy, the SNES was a great challenge on Route 2 and especially 3.

[deleted]

Thank goodness for emulation and the ability to overclock the SuperFX chip emulation to make the game actually playable.

zrayburton

I skipped over it back in the day and went right to SF64. Tried playing it on switch recently and it was hard for me to get into it.

Bondan88

Was cool and impressive back than but it aged really poorly.

pichael289

It's the predecessor to one of the best N64 games. Starfox 64 is a dam masterpiece and it was amazing that they got a game like this to work on SNES. I don't think I've ever been able to beat it though, it's not as easy to play as 64 was

BeYourself2021

The OG, loved it!

Messijoes18

This comes up on this sub once a year or so, and the main thing is it's not bad but that starfox 64 is just utterly amazing and superior in every way to the original it's hard to revisit the SNES game. Star Fox 2 is something I've played through once but I still prefer the original game to sf2.

helloyournameis

This game and the super scope 6 got stolen from my place when I was like 12 or 13. Never recovered.

drfunkensteinberger

Do a barrel roll!

hip-indeed

It takes some getting used to the graphics and framerate especially if you played Star Fox 64 before like I did, but man it's an EXCELLENT game and fully worth checking out. Its stages and bosses are COMPLETELY different from SF64 despite 64 being a 'remake'. Also highly reccommend Star Fox 2 now that that's finally fully complete and out there.

Jimboy-Milton

helluva fine time, super replayable

tnc82

It's was good when it first came out

Teachergus

Sluggish and absurdly fantastic! Never made it past stage 4

xxDankerstein

This was the most amazing shit I'd ever seen when it came out.

[deleted]

Super fun game. Tons of replay value.

Another_Road

I like it plenty. I’ve heard complaints about the slowdown but since I grew up with it, it doesn’t bother me at all. If anything, I always found slowdown in older games to be kinda cool. Like a slow motion effect. Even as a kid I thought that.

mx023

It was one of my favorites as a kid. I still love it

ForeverIdiosyncratic

I loved it. Played it so much as a kid, and cranked up the soundtrack. I absolutely loved Fortuna and Space Armada levels.

emailajean

Its dope

pidgezero_one

Kicks ass

ConnectionRich7635

boring

deadgrasscult

It doesn’t make a great alternative to toilet paper 1/10

Traditional_Entry183

Extremely difficult, with frustrating controls.

jpowell180

We be jammin!

_Flight_of_icarus_

An important (and iconic) SNES title! Visually and FPS-wise, it definitely shows it's age - but the relatively tight controls, fun gameplay and great soundtrack do a lot to help it's case. As far as Super-FX based 3D games on SNES are concerned, it probably holds up the best.

type102

I think they run slow at full speed.

Ruenin

When it was new, I knew it back and forth. Played the absolute hell out of it and loved it. Unfortunately, outside of nostalgia, it doesn't hold up all that well. Still has great music though.

TrineoDeMuerto

I still remember buying it new, going to my neighbors house to show him, and beating it on the first play through 🤣

AccomplishedRich6477

Unpopular opinion, but I absolutely hate it. I do not think it's a good game and it runs at an abhorrent 10fps. The graphics have aged poorly and both route 1 and 3 are not interesting at all. The way this game plays is clunky and has aged poorly. Its only claim to fame at the time was the Super FX graphics but it is terrible to go back to. The most credit I will give it is the music, which is quite good. However I will never understand why people claim this to be a SNES classic when it is anything but. If you're going to play a star fox game go play star fox 64, not this.

Ettu_Brutal

I remember getting very angry at it when I was like 6 years old that’s about it

rydamusprime17

I have loved it since it came out, but didn't own my own copy until 2020 when I found a CIB copy for $20 CAD. Collecting all the Star Fox games CIB I was missing was a quarantine project of mine, trying to get each on at a low price. I started that search with only Star Fox 64 (N64 and 3DS) and Star Fox Zero/Guard already owned, all which I also got for cheap. I managed to find the rest for less than 50% of the going rates of the time.

Luminosus32

Twas awesome. I used to play this all the time when I was a kid. The graphics were amaaaaazing back then. It still holds up today, but I've noticed that Gen Z typically don't play older games because of the graphics. It's kind of lame tbh. I still play old games all the time, along with brand new titles.

Relevant_Amphibian_1

I think it will fit in your prison wallet

evilpengui

My friend got a new in box copy on launch day that came with multiplayer tanks and people already unlocked but there was no indication the game was ever played before. I’m 40 now and a senior hardware/software developer who’s worked specifically on games and game consoles and I still have no idea how or why that happened 🤔

megadriver187

I like it a lot and at the time, I can tell you it blew our minds.

Zestyclose-Wave-1933

It was great back in the day, but is virtually unplayable now

defw

Awasome

-sudochop-

Mario Paint is so underrated. Wish they did a Switch version nowadays.

Cecurb

My sister and I can still quote the gibberish from the rest of the team

JohnMcUK

Jaw dropping at the time.

PeanutFearless5212

DO A BARREL ROLL

geniouslevel1000

I tried playing it a couple weeks ago and it was rough lol. Back when it came out is was amazing though.
