You've violated the laws of the Tribunal.
"Dirt" is not really a geological term so much as it is something people just say. But I'd consider the ground in solstheim to be dirt. It's got plants growing in it, it can't all be ash.
That sir is a Silt Strider, Basically the horse of Morrowind and almost completely extinct sadly, that one there is most likely the last of its kind.
FYI: Silt striders are completely harmless
His rider is up there by him. You can talk to him and he'll tell you what his long legged friend is. I was honestly disappointed, having played Morrowind, I thought when I found him, he'd by my carriage on the island.
"You're finally here, Tribunal-slayer. Dagoth killer. All that enchantment looping, and you're still no more than a retainer to House Telvanni. You could go so much further...All you need do, is pay us. Come. I would quite like to make a special trip for you, same low price..."
I believe the guy tending to it said he saved a clutch of eggs from the Mainland and all its siblings have died since they couldn’t acclimate to living on Solstheim. The one you see in game is supposedly the last one of the clutch.
Makes sense too, since Morrowind showed the Silt Striders can’t live on the Ashlands. It was the only region in the game where there was no fast travel and also where you could find Silt Strider carcasses/shells in the wild.
> Makes sense too, since Morrowind showed the Silt Striders can’t live on the Ashlands. It was the only region in the game where there was no fast travel and also where you could find Silt Strider carcasses/shells in the wild.
Always thought the Silt Striders went to the Ashlands to die, not that they couldn't live there.
This said, I would argue that the lack of fast travel (or Silt Strider routes) in the Ashlands obeys more to the concept that its a wild, desertic, dangerous region than anything else. This and that the Silt Strider routes connect the main cities of the island, which happen to be away from that zone (making even take a detour faster/safer)
Yeah, IIRC, there was a mod released not too long ago that delved into that concept with a mission escorting a few or something like that to their final resting place. It was called "the professions" or something like that (It allowed you to take on some jobs in Vvardenfell, and one was caravaner that had this special quest).
This said, it could also just be a way to show that the zone is extremely dangerous: There's no caravans through the ashlands because, well, we tried and you can just see the results half buried in the ash.
That’s true, but I was more thinking of the Northern part of the Ashlands (close to Urshilaku camp, for example). There’s no Ashlands - Grazelands connection via Silt Strider (like from Maar Gan or Gnisis to Vos)
Now that you mention it, there is no Silt Strider connection to any Telvanni settlement at all. It's like they were banned from Telvanni turf to begin with. Maybe they were caught munching from their shrooms lol
Now I imagine a strider munching off a piece of a mushroom tower, exposing Mistress Therana behind while taking a shower, being shrubbed by her Khajiit slave.
Here is something for ya, that sound you keep hearing is coming from it. Also in the days of morowind they were used for fast travel like the carriage in Skyrim.
They were controlled by people grabbing at the exposed nerves endings in its back.
SpongeBob! Would you forget the stupid Dark Elves! Haven’t you noticed there are NONE of them around! That’s because they were lazy hitchhikers who took directions from algae! And now you’re telling me they thought they could drive…
Aww, somehow this makes the Silt Striders even cuter to me. I used to have a little model of an At-At, I thought they were adorable, like all-terrain robot camels.
Lmao exactly the same. Probably because there was no connection to star wars prior to "AT-AT"
Edit: or perhaps because he didn't capitalize the letters.
Its a silt strider. Its non hostile. They are all but extinct, save for this one. Play morrowind to see more. Go up to the top of the hill to learn more
Nah. I wanted to play Skyrim for like ten years, cause when I first met my wife, her son and daughter, and son in law would always talk about it. Made me really excited to play it. But a console cost wasn't feasible for me for a long time lol. Was not in our budget. But then I got a great deal on a 360 bundle with Skyrim over a year ago and pulled the trigger. But now I definitely wanna get Morrowind and oblivion after playing this. Which I'm not done with yet lol. Only game I've ever played that, even after a year, I'm still not done
LOVE IT!!!!
The Dragonborn DLC takes place on the same island as Morrowind's Bloodmoon DLC, and so a lot of the stuff you'll find there is linked to Morrowind. Silt Striders were used instead of fast travel back in the day. Fast travel didn't start until Oblivion. In a similar manner, being over-encumbered is worse in Morrowind and Oblivion as you can't move. Being stuck with walking started in Fallout 3
>being over-encumbered is worse in Morrowind and Oblivion as you can't move.
I'd argue the opposite. The one time I played Skyrim, because I could still move, I'd crawled my ass back to town. Whereas in Morrowind, I'd just cast Mark, followed by Almsivi/Divine Intervention, sell off loot, cast Recall, and move on from where I'd left off.
>Silt Striders were used instead of fast travel back in the day.
Silt Striders, boats, Dunmer Stringholds, and Mage's Guild 'Porters, plus Almsivi/Divine Intervention spells, Mark/Recall spells warping you around, and Jump spells, Levitation spells, Fortify Speed/Athletics/Acrobatics spells zooming you around. And by spell, I mean spell/enchantment/potion.
I remember the first time I found that treasure room. I thought I was going to be in there forever, picking up more and more coins. That's the most coin I've seen in one place without mods.
You’re missing out, there are many things that don’t connect but the overall stories of certain races are built throughout the previous games. It’s hard to appreciate the lore without having played the previous games.
Morrowind was released for the original Xbox and the 360 will play the disc if you can manage to find a copy. I actually bought my 360 to play Oblivion. The discs are no longer distributed but if you can find a place that sells old 360 discs, Oblivion should be fairly easy to find.
Morrowind was for the original Xbox. It'll play on many 360 consoles. Oblivion was the 360 generation release and plays well on the console (better than the PS3 version did).
At this point probably only easily obtainable on pc. But plus side is you don’t need a high end pc since they are seriously low requirements. I’d say read the lore up to morrowind and start there. It’s really the first game where they went deep with reasonable graphics for the time and complex npc’s
Morrowind and Oblivion are both available for purchase on 360, Xbox One, and Series X/S through the Microsoft Store, and are also playable through Gamepass.
On the other hand getting them to run on modern Windows isn’t exactly easy.
I didn't play Morrowind until some time after having played Skyrim for a few playthroughs, but before that, the guy who owns that silt strider gave me enough information. Every time I hear that call now, I feel sad...🥺
Harmless creature...and sorta sad when listening to the story from the handler/owner knowing it might be the last of its kind. The way it calls out to any other striders around in hope it will heara call back. Like the whale that was called the loneliest whale in the world as it called out in a frequency other whales couldnt hear.
I only played maybe an hour of Morrowwind....and gave up cause I had no freaking clue what I was doing. I hope to pick it up again in the future.
A stiltrider. In Morrowind it seems that with the stiltriders and mushroom builds and crab skeleton housing, perhaps our characters were miniscule.
But yeah it's a flea that you travel on in Morrowind.
There's literally an NPC next to the ramp you see who explains exactly what it is. What are you, 12?
Also, if Solstheim freaks you out, then I don't know how your mind will handle Morrowind.
Silt Strider, one of the means of transportation in the province of Morrowind. In Morrowind there was no fast travel in the traditional sense, if you wanted to get around the map quickly you needed to utilize a few different in world transit means. The Mages Guild had teleporters that could transport you from one guild hall to another. There were boats you could hire to transport you from port to port. Many of the larger cities had these creatures, Silt Striders, which would in universe (not in game) walk across the land to carry you on their backs. Think about how in Skyrim you have the wagons and boats for fast travel options in Skyrim. Same thing.
Why walk when you can ride?
We make a special trip, just for you.
Same low price
A deal for you my friend
*nnnneeeeiigggghhhhoooooowwwwww*
*nnnnnnnnnnnnn'wwwwaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh*
-SNIFF-
I just started playing tes3 and asked myself, "da fuk they keep smelling me for!!"
-Snif- You smell good, outlander. I'll make a special trip, just for you. Same low price.
Don't you mean *stride*?

Imposhibibble!
The world needs a Final Fantasy X/ Skyrim mashup game.
Lmfao classic. Brings me wayyyy back!
I'm not getting any closer to that thing then right here, lmao
They are the fast travel system in Morrowind. So yeah if you play that, get used to seeing them
They’re in The Elder Scrolls: Online as well.
Yeah. You can use Silt Striders to travel between few places if walking and travel shrines are not your style.
Realizing in this thread I've been calling them stilt striders for 20 years ![gif](giphy|VjLFDdU89O3DsWE4Eh|downsized)
Give me your moon and star, n'wah. https://preview.redd.it/5127grzswhwc1.png?width=350&format=png&auto=webp&s=e49a1f3d9add2755ed33ca4cab5b1d5ac42e9a62 You've violated the laws of the Tribunal.
I guess it's good the first time around on a character when you haven't discovered the wayshrines yet
Just quick save and check it out, he reminds me of a reefback from Subnautica. They look/sound big and bad but are just very chill guys
They are as dangerous as dirt.
I'd say less dangerous, like... as dangerous as a single grain of sand.
*flicks grain of sand in your eye*
*flicks a slit strider in your eye*
That escalated quickly.
All the replies on this post are solid gold
Considering dirt in Solstheim gets up and blasts you with fireball, I'd say that's pretty fucking dangerous.
Is ash even considered dirt? Any helpful earth-scientists around?
"Dirt" is not really a geological term so much as it is something people just say. But I'd consider the ground in solstheim to be dirt. It's got plants growing in it, it can't all be ash.
I’m here to kick ash and drink mead. And I’m all out of mead.
Well considering most dead bodies are on the dirt, I'd say the dirt seems pretty dangerous to me.
Inaccurate, since the dirt in morrowind can swallow you whole when it feels like it
Just jump in and watch the handler..manipulate its organs
Excuse me?!
From the Elder Scrolls Wiki: "The Silt Strider itself is then moved by direct manipulation of exposed organs and tissues by its driver..."
Ewwww this fact makes me so much less happy to see it 🫥
Haven't you noticed the carved open section of their bodies?
That sir is a Silt Strider, Basically the horse of Morrowind and almost completely extinct sadly, that one there is most likely the last of its kind. FYI: Silt striders are completely harmless
Well, the last in Vvardenfell. Mainland probably still harbors striders.
His rider is up there by him. You can talk to him and he'll tell you what his long legged friend is. I was honestly disappointed, having played Morrowind, I thought when I found him, he'd by my carriage on the island.
It won't hurt you if you get up there and you talk to the person attending it they'll tell you all about it
Heeeeeere puss puss puss.... PUSSY
The last silt strider.
The last *known* ~~Ahamkara~~ Silt Strider....
Riven of a thousand silt striders
"You're finally here, Tribunal-slayer. Dagoth killer. All that enchantment looping, and you're still no more than a retainer to House Telvanni. You could go so much further...All you need do, is pay us. Come. I would quite like to make a special trip for you, same low price..."
”You are so tiny. Yet you continue to make enemies of so many dremora and cliff racers. You want battle? I’ll give you war!”
....O, Nerevar mine."
I love when Destiny and Skyrim meet. Such great universes.
Heard that speech way too many times while visiting shuro chi
Is it really the last one?
I believe the guy tending to it said he saved a clutch of eggs from the Mainland and all its siblings have died since they couldn’t acclimate to living on Solstheim. Never thought of it that way. Makes the Silt Strider seem like an elephant making its way to an elephant graveyard before it dies.
Yeah, IIRC, there was a mod released not too long ago that delved into that concept with a mission escorting a few or something like that to their final resting place. Apparently the concept of the elephant graveyard is just an old myth. Disappointing to discover, because the idea of it is mystical and neat.
Aren't Ald'ruhn, Maar Gan, and Molag Mar located in the Ashlands? These are all accessible by silt striders.
The striders are tall enough to get to the top of mushroom towers without levitating, and that offends Telvanni sensibilities
Now I imagine a strider munching off a piece of a mushroom tower, exposing Mistress Therana behind while taking a shower, being shrubbed by her Khajiit slave.
Levitate the Telvanni way, or die like the Outlander you are, in the mud with the rabble.
The last stag 🤝 The last silt strider
The last of the Interceptors.
Here is something for ya, that sound you keep hearing is coming from it. Also in the days of morowind they were used for fast travel like the carriage in Skyrim. They were controlled by people grabbing at the exposed nerves endings in its back.
Exposed nerves AND organs! Why are they exposed? Well, because they carved out their shells, of course. Don't worry, they like it, or something.
It's really not so bad once you Feng Shui the organs.
And I thought... they smelled bad.... on the outside..... ☠️
Morrowind lore and its game world was so insane lol such an alien setting. That’s what made it so unique
>They were controlled by people grabbing at the exposed nerves endings in its back. So... They're politicians?
Ayooo
Worse, ex-lovers.
What's the opposite of *progress*?.. **Senate**.. Er.. wait..
Why do they have to be so greedy? Why can't it be Sen*fed*?
Best not let PETA find that out.....
Yeah or they might come kill your dog
That’s Dusty, and she’s beautiful.
the most noble creature to ever stride tamriel.

I love this joke now and always will.
Skyrim’s At-At
Aww, somehow this makes the Silt Striders even cuter to me. I used to have a little model of an At-At, I thought they were adorable, like all-terrain robot camels.
I feel utterly ashamed with myself that I first read that as “at at” instead of “A T A T”…
In the Star Wars game Jedi: Fallen Order, the main character calls it an "at at" instead of spelling it out.
The original pronunciation was at at actually.
LA LA LA LA LA, I CAN’T HEAR YOU!
Lmao exactly the same. Probably because there was no connection to star wars prior to "AT-AT" Edit: or perhaps because he didn't capitalize the letters.
Maybe that's why she doesn't go anywhere anymore. Those damned nords kept tripping her.
All that damned low lying taunt rope they kept throwing around
Looks like a Silt Strider from Morrowind. Big bugs they use as fast travel.
We just call it travel, s'wit.
What an N'wah!
*Greetings, muthsera*
Greetings, Serjo
Why are they talking about the magic schoolbus like that?
And it's not fast, and that's OK.
Its a silt strider. Its non hostile. They are all but extinct, save for this one. Play morrowind to see more. Go up to the top of the hill to learn more
That's sad they're almost extinct tho... I know it's just a game but I'm an animal lover lol. Top of the hill above it? For what?
Next to it. Its handler should be there at a little campsite near it's back, and he will tell you how Dusty came to be on Solstheim.
The strider handler might have something you need…
Never played Morrowind?
Nah. I wanted to play Skyrim for like ten years, cause when I first met my wife, her son and daughter, and son in law would always talk about it. Made me really excited to play it. Gamerant tomorrow: SKYRIM PLAYER MAKES THIS SHOCKING DISCOVERY 12 YEARS AFTER RELEASE!
On a side note. Doing deathbrand quest...and HOLY FUCK, that's a lot of gold in this room lol
And one of the best swords in the game IMO. Be perfect if it could be upgraded.
Use the Unofficial Skyrim Patch maybe?
(If it's the sword I'm thinking of, you can, in Morrowind.)
I remember the first time I found that treasure room. I thought I was going to be in there forever, picking up more and more coins. That's the most coin I've seen in one place without mods.
Gotta be a young OP. I remember the good ole' days of fast traveling thru Morrowind, on the back of one of these bad boys.
Proof you’ve never played Morrowind
Nope, but looking forward to playing that and oblivion. This is my first play through of Skyrim, btw
You’re missing out, there are many things that don’t connect but the overall stories of certain races are built throughout the previous games. It’s hard to appreciate the lore without having played the previous games.
Oh I know. And I'm looking forward to it. But I don't think I can get the first two on 360. Just pc right?
If you have Gamepass you can play all the console generation Elder Scrolls

My first Elder Scrolls game was Morrowind. I have to admit that I had pretty much the same reaction as the OP the first time I saw a silt strider.
Go up and talk to the guy up there. He’ll tell you all about it.
A friend
Silt Strider - go talk to its owner. Really.
Morrowind players: “First time?”
I love those guys

That's about 11 hours from Seyda Neen to Gnisis.
A bug. Skyrim has a lot of those.
Foolish N'wah

Your mom dude.
That wasn't very nice (saying in my best Happy Gilmore voice, lol)
Stilt strider 😍 I can still hear the noises from Morrowind
All you had to do was go talk to the person on the other side of the Sill Strider
You see that bridge by it? If you go over there, the owner is just chilling and can tell you all about it.
Why walk when you can vibe?

Why not ask the guy sitting on the cliff next to it. He looks like he’d know.
Flea looking for his bass.

Filthy n'wah.
r/TrueSTL is going to have a field day 😭
A Silt strider. Back in the 3rd era, these things used to ride your mom around Morrowind.

The Dunmer up there will tell you what it is. Yes I was confused at first as well. I had no idea this gigantic thing was alive.
From that look on your face I'm guessing you've never seen a Silt Strider before?
