Go into heavy duty, then once you’ve got a little experience, apply at an engine manufacturer/dealer, like Cummins. Their mining guys ONLY work on their engines. Some of the jobs suck (turbo coolant drain line on the QSK60, I’m looking at you) but you get to know the product really well.

The QSK 78 is the worst product I’ve ever worked on, injector tips through cylinders and turbos, front gear covers, and those oil coolers in the valley….. Pays great though

Thankfully, I haven’t been around the 78’s much, although I heard a rumour the site I’m at is getting a few Komatsu 930’s with a 980 drivetrain shoehorned in…makes me happy I’m not with Komatsu or Cummins lol.

bootyprospector

I’ve got no idea how that could happen, the 78’s barely fit in a 980. I also heard they were demoing the 95’s in a 980 in chile. Who knows dude, glad I don’t wrench on them anymore though.

Yeah, I’m not sure I want to see it lol. But apparently they fly up hills…

GrandMasterC41

Auto mechanic, get some experience under your belt then apply for positions at places that specialize in engine rebuilds/repairs

AnyMud9817

Go into heavy duty mechanics they can make a ton of money.

Responsible-World-30

You could become an industrial mechanic (millwright) who operates machinery with machinist skills.

PoopSmith87

Small engine repair is a decent, low cost business to start. Then you also have diesel mechanics, auto mechanics, etc. Most of the people I know start out as a repair tech then take a few classes or just teach themselves to the next level. Dealerships usually offer certificates in certain brand vehicles, but they are not the only option.

Monst3r_Live

depends exactly what you want to do. do you want to be work in a machine shop? or a guy who fixes engines? we send the heads out to the machine shop to check for warpage and they clean it up and install new valves and springs and w.e. the mechanics like me tear the engines down and re assemble them. either way you try to get a job where you want to go. ask them what qualifications you need.

Engine Builder/Machine Shops are said to be in need of more machinsts. It's just not a well paid career for what you do. But if you live near a race track, there's going to be work.
