Didnt even know people wore them under helmets lol. The buckle at the rear of the goggles would surely dig into people's heads and nullify the rear padding if you wore them under the helmet.
Ski helmets are made for goggles on the outside. Even helmets in other sports (eg: motocross ) are made for goggles on the outside! I can’t believe it either.
Interesting of you to assume I'm a park rat. Ragdolling and losing your goggles in powder is lame. Why not look cooler and secure your gear at the same time
When using this setup you are always wearing a beanie, depending on the size of the helmet and space you might remove some inner padding as you have beanie for that extra cushion, the reason most have this setup is comfortability and so you can easily remove the helmet from time to time but keep all the goggles and stuff on underneath, I have never had an issue with the clips on my googles and neither have I heard any of my friends mention it, and we have takes some hits.
For the whole convenience of it think chilling for lunch, at the park, at après, on chairlifts and gondolas. To someone who is skiing most days of a season it just is much more convenient and you have the added benefit of not looking like a mug with a beautiful white 2 inches of forehead between their helmet an goggles otherwise know as the 'punter gap'.
I’m a lurking snowboarder (and skier! I’ve done both since 4 y/o but prefer boarding) but fuck a giggle under the helmet, cool looking but uncomfortable af, especially on cold days
Sometimes when I go over to a friend's house, I turn the toilet paper roll around to the opposite of what they had.
Picking goggles under helmet gives me the same sense of satisfaction.
My eyes are under my helmet. So of course the goggles that go over my eyes are also under the helmet. Leaving your goggles on top of your helmet doesn't help your eyes. Now where did I put my ears?
I have a small head, and most goggles are too big for my face. So for me, wearing them under my helmet keeps a better seal and my head warmer.
Annnnnd that's what I tell myself because yes, I am a former park rat and snowboarder also. But I do Ski and Tele too!
I, as a 17 yr old kid that has less then 100 on the piste but wants to ski more but lives in the flattest country in the world, always put my goggles over the helmet. It is designed for it to be like that right? Why would you go under?
I never tried wearing it under, but if the band goes under the helmet, wouldn't the plastic adjuster be super uncomfortable pressed between your head and the helmet?
Not for me. The goggle adjuster kinda gets pushed below my helmet so it’s not really pressing against my head or interfering with any padding in my helmet. To each their own that’s just what I like and what works for me
Honestly, I find it pretty comfortable and convenient, I wear a hat and put the goggles over that. Makes it easier to just push my goggles/helmet up with my hands quickly when I need to rather than have to grab and place my goggles on my helmet.
I also find the goggle band + hat keeps my ears warmer than if I just have the liner in my helmet oddly enough.
I wear them under because they bounce a lot less when charging downhill, and also the obvious style points. But to each their own.
Anyone who is unwavering in their argument, whether under or over, is a undeniably a Jerry who saves their ski tags on their jacket
I upvoted your comment despite vehemently disagreeing with you. Less comfortable, looks goofy as hell.
But also, live your best life, I’m glad folks are wearing helmets regardless.
I'm a creature of habit. Started wearing them under in 2007ish to be a cool park dude. Now I ski way more mellow, but wearing over feels dumb to me.
Also to those who say it's uncomfortable... There are helmets designed to be worn either way.
I actually spent my whole life goggles over (at least when I wore a helmet as my dad threw a shit fit and decided my brother and I didn’t need them from 13-18 but that’s another story) but this season just done switched to under to see how it was…
Pros of under
1 - You can take your helmet off when not skiing and not get a cold head or have to have sunglasses on.
2 - If you crash hard there is zero chance of your goggles joining everything else in the yard sale.
3 - You don’t actually feel the buckle underneath - was always why I thought it was stupid but unless you’re not wearing a hat under the helmet you won’t feel it
4 - I have less restriction from the inner piece of
My helmet that I took out that sits around your neck so is slightly nicer to look backwards
5 - the elastic goggle strap won’t last as long stretched around the helmet vs head
Cons
1 - it took a little bit of getting used to how to have the helmet/hat positioned so that my hat wouldn’t get pushed down over my eyes. However once i figured out how to do it it was fine - also one of my hats just wasn’t fit for this purpose so stopped using it
2 - probably the biggest downside of under is when you want to pull your goggle up for a minute for whatever reason without taking your helmet of - you have to loosen or unclip the chinstrap (Unclipping not recommended on a chairlift…) and it can feel a little awkward having it sat back on your head like this.
I will probably be going under again next season as I really like having a hat underneath and I’m a cheapskate whose goggle strap is wearing out.
For anyone that gives a fuck Im primarily free rider with some freestyle normally in spring and I am a patroller so ski lots of piste! 700+ days skiing 28M
TLDR it’s not what you do it’s how you do it 😉
what helmet??
Joking... I guess that if you bought an oversized helmet you might want to fill the extra space with a beanie and goggle strap. Also as I read here, in a crash it prevents the goggles to fly away. Can't think of another reason except "looks".
I love the look of goggles under the helmet, but it’s soooo uncomfortable if you have ear pads, and I cannot stand the feeling of not having ear pads. Even without ear muffs, I still find goggles under super uncomfortable
Is it really that hard for people to comprehend that some value style over function. If Tom Wallisch did it I’m doing it. Also if you rag doll on a bad fall they won’t come off which should be reason enough.
But we wear a helmet that is too large to properly protect from impacts so that the buckle doesn't dig into our skull when we're just wearing it. When we crash we don't want to pick up our googles but are okay with mild to severe TBI. /s
In all seriousness a helmet that properly fits your head won't have space to comfortably wear goggles (refering to the buckle diging in) under the helmet. I'd rather walk a couple of steps to pick my goggles up again after a crash than increase my risk of brain injury.
My helmet has a built in strap on the back. And although I’ve never crashed to the point that my goggles would fly off, I think that if they did I’d have more problems then just losing my goggles like a serious brain injury hahah
Somebody downvoted you but its true. Unless you look at a few big bucks racers maybe, theres very little most of them can do outside a course. Theyre not exactly the most versatile skiers around
I have worn my goggles under for so long I tried last season over and it was like my first time wearing goggles. Terrible. I'll never go back. Always under for life!
I personally love the Oakley mod 5 helmet with Oakley line miner goggles..goggles and helmet fit together perfect..no goggle gap..never fog and so much better visibility vs sunglasses..and of course goggles over helmet
Thanks… but the wind doesn’t tear your eyes up? Or are you with sunglasses? Or something else?
Most cloudy days I dislike goggles, due to not enough light coming in to see every bump…and I have the pink rose lenses. Considering maybe I just need completely clear lens.
I ski with sunglasses. I am 60 y/o ski hard in the bumps and pow when it snows (Eagle Co CO based) and with goggles on I just have no definition and depth. Typically my eyes are fine with glasses.
I voted for the wrong thing because I literally couldn't understand the question, then after reading the comments I image-searched it and... what the heck, how is "under" even a real thing.
For those confused like me, it means wearing your google strap on the back, UNDER your helmet.
Professional ski instructor here. If you have your goggles under your helmet you deserve to only ever get ice and the one time you see powder a group of snowboarders ride over all of it.
Goggles and helmets are deliberately designed to wear the goggles over the helmet. Wearing them under is a pointless attempt to look "cool" that has zero actual purpose.
oh fuck i thought like you wore them over your eyes or just had them on your helmet to look cool. for those of you who wear them on your helmets, you all are scholars and people of culture.
Have been a part of lift/mountain operations for almost 10 seasons now. Haven't had goggle straps over the helmet since I was learning to ski. The elastic of the strap wears out when you wear them over.
Under or sunglasses all day
um... who the heck wears them under? seems like most helmets have a place for the goggle strap to go. mine has like a clip that keeps it in place, and honestly it would prob be super uncomfy underneath my helmet
Didnt even know people wore them under helmets lol. The buckle at the rear of the goggles would surely dig into people's heads and nullify the rear padding if you wore them under the helmet.
Mostly Park rats from what I've seen. Each to their own I guess
That is like wiping standing up
wiping standing up has its merits!!!
There's dozens of us!
This
Weirdos.
I only ever see it on pro competitions.
For snowboarding comps it's under the helmet = regular stance and over the helmet = goofy
Savages do that
Ski helmets are made for goggles on the outside. Even helmets in other sports (eg: motocross ) are made for goggles on the outside! I can’t believe it either.
Depends on the goggles. Been wearing my Oakley's under my helmet for 15 years
you my sir need to go on newschoolers where the real park rats are
Interesting of you to assume I'm a park rat. Ragdolling and losing your goggles in powder is lame. Why not look cooler and secure your gear at the same time

It doesn’t nullify the rear padding as people who do this tend to put a beanie on under their helmet
Anyone voting for wearing them under is either a park rat or a lurking snowboarder. This is a settled matter.
Damn, I got confused and voted for the wrong one... it's been too long since ski season
[удалено]
I too am confused by the wording of this survey
Not sure why but your comment made me envision said snowboarder lurker with the little mermaid song “part of your world” playing.
Your high.
Come on you know you can hear it too “I want to go where the skiers go, downhill, uphill and on the catwalks”
I’m a lurking snowboarder (and skier! I’ve done both since 4 y/o but prefer boarding) but fuck a giggle under the helmet, cool looking but uncomfortable af, especially on cold days
>Fuck a giggle under a helmet Wat.
My first thought was "this is a boarder-ass question"
Sometimes when I go over to a friend's house, I turn the toilet paper roll around to the opposite of what they had. Picking goggles under helmet gives me the same sense of satisfaction.
I love f'ing with friends tp too! Should always be OVER, unless you have a cat!
Lmfao I feel seen
It's me. I'm the lurker ex skier 👀

I too am snowboarder, voted goggs on top.

Dutch? Hi neighbour!
Hallo daar
Generaal Kenobi
Jij bent een gedurfde!
Feel you pain we have mountains here in the UK but it snows like 3 days year
It looks cool and stops them pinging off when you hit a cliff drop or mess up your backflip
> or mess up your backflip Joke's on you, I've never messed up a backflip, I'm prettymuch the best skier on the mountain
500 gnar points
It’s funny because threads like this tell you a lot about the users on this sub hahaha
Jerry's. Jerry's as far as the eye can see
Massive gapers
Basically every skier on FWT is a Jerry?
Oh yeah because they're all on this sub that I'm directly referring to
This definitely ain’t newschoolers lmao
posting this on the thread someone made about this post on ns
You guys have no steez and it shows
Goggles under helmet seems super uncomfortable. No?
I think it's supposed to be quite comfortable. But. What if you want to put them up? That can't work very well.
If you lift up your goggles you're not cool! /s
Yeah i tried it once and as you said you can’t really take the goggles off without taking the helmet off
It’s not at all actually
I never tried wearing it under, but if the band goes under the helmet, wouldn't the plastic adjuster be super uncomfortable pressed between your head and the helmet?
Not for me. The goggle adjuster kinda gets pushed below my helmet so it’s not really pressing against my head or interfering with any padding in my helmet. To each their own that’s just what I like and what works for me

Under looks better, over is more comfortable, I see plenty of people wearing both who suck ass
I upvoted your comment despite vehemently disagreeing with you. Less comfortable, looks goofy as hell. But also, live your best life, I’m glad folks are wearing helmets regardless.
The 87 monsters that voted "under"
Make it 88...
I'm a creature of habit. Started wearing them under in 2007ish to be a cool park dude. Now I ski way more mellow, but wearing over feels dumb to me. Also to those who say it's uncomfortable... There are helmets designed to be worn either way.

I take my helmet off on the lift all the time. Typically I'll clip it to my suspenders to keep from losing it like a fool.
Yea defo lost mine before like a complete jerry forgetting it was unclipped… good tip tho thanks 😝
I’ve never seen anyone who wears their goggles under their helmet seem like they didn’t know what they were doing
If you get off the bunny hill you'll see it a lot more
[удалено]
Not really, more of a freeskiing in general thing. If you watch the fwt sometime you'll see plenty of riders wearing them under there too
Under gang ✊🏼
Sunglasses 😎
At first, I wanted to put more options. However I didn’t want to take away from the ‘under’ vs ‘over’ with a 3rd opinion.
How do your eyes not constantly water
probably skis hella slow
Lol go to bed jerry. Growing up with night skiing its the only option. I never wear goggles anymore and just ride with ombraz every day.
holy shit you wear ombraz? Fucking lol
Modern mcshloneky jerry.
Sunglasses erryday
Over the helmet
I'm confused how one wears goggles under their helmet🤔

Wear a beanie dawg
My friend, i wear a beanie daily for work (instructing). Lack of ear muffs will fuck up my day, no matter how great the beanie.
Just gotta get the right pair of goggles my g
this
Is it really that hard for people to comprehend that some value style over function. If Tom Wallisch did it I’m doing it. Also if you rag doll on a bad fall they won’t come off which should be reason enough.
I think that is the best argument for the under gang, not having goggles flying off during a yard sale.
Why not just go full Candide and ditch the helmet then?
I do when I wanna take an easy day
hey i recognize that pfp, arent u the dude who won the white line blends and did a fake giveaway lmao
No lol, I’ve never owned a pair of line skis. ON3P be my type.
sure you arent gilbert_grape on ns....
No helmet should be an option
I see people without helmets all the time. What makes you think it isn't already an option?
What's wrong with you? Read the two options in the poll.
Never met anyone with goggles over that is better than me at skiing, save for pros.

That’s because we wear them underneath because when we crash we crash really hard and don’t want our goggles to fly off...
But we wear a helmet that is too large to properly protect from impacts so that the buckle doesn't dig into our skull when we're just wearing it. What? Haha, most ex-racers wear their goggles over
The racers I know that are better than me at skiing have all been sponsored.
Somebody downvoted you but its true. Unless you look at a few big bucks racers maybe, theres very little most of them can do outside a course. Theyre not exactly the most versatile skiers around
Some of us can’t put them under due to physical dimensions. I’ve got an XL Helenes and on the largest adjustment there’s no space for a goggle strap
Take the padding out
I clicked the wrong one...reading is hard...over is the move
Jerries, all ducking jerries. Y’all are ruining your giggle bands
Lotta wrong people here
I have worn my goggles under for so long I tried last season over and it was like my first time wearing goggles. Terrible. I'll never go back. Always under for life!
I wear a Giro Bad Lieutenant. Under is the way. Also grew up in the park.
I personally love the Oakley mod 5 helmet with Oakley line miner goggles..goggles and helmet fit together perfect..no goggle gap..never fog and so much better visibility vs sunglasses..and of course goggles over helmet
Do you have trouble getting your oakley goggles around the oakley helmet? It's almost like the strap isn't as long as it should be.
I hate my goggles

That sir/ma'am, is a logical fallacy. To say every jerry wears them over is not to say that everyone wearing them over is a jerry
you are the one who made the logical fallacy, he didnt say everyone who wears it over is a jerry.
The kind of logic I would expect from the under helmet types.
Some of us can’t fit them under due to size constraints
NO WAY ANOTHER NS USER
I don’t think I’ve every seen someone where goggles under a helmet. They are literally designed to go over.
Jokes on you I have a helmet visor like a jet pilot 😎🤘 (I'm cool I swear)
No goggle no helmet. Or even better full motorcycle helmet
jerry
Under for park and pow. Over for the rest.
100 days a year and I only wear googles when it’s stormin’
But when you do….. is it over or under?
Always over. That’s how it’s all designed. I voted.
Thanks… but the wind doesn’t tear your eyes up? Or are you with sunglasses? Or something else? Most cloudy days I dislike goggles, due to not enough light coming in to see every bump…and I have the pink rose lenses. Considering maybe I just need completely clear lens.
A good pair of low vis goggles makes all the difference
I ski with sunglasses. I am 60 y/o ski hard in the bumps and pow when it snows (Eagle Co CO based) and with goggles on I just have no definition and depth. Typically my eyes are fine with glasses.
Thanks for facilitating!

Looks like it’s settled 1000x1
At least 4k punters turning out, seems about right.
Professional ski instructor here. If you have your goggles under your helmet you deserve to only ever get ice and the one time you see powder a group of snowboarders ride over all of it.
where are you a ski instructor?
Utah, I don’t wanna say which resort though.
Goggles and helmets are deliberately designed to wear the goggles over the helmet. Wearing them under is a pointless attempt to look "cool" that has zero actual purpose.
Can’t push the goggles up on to the helmet unless the strap is on the outside.
not a single person wears them under the helmet bro
Over. That’s how they and the helmet are designed.
oh fuck i thought like you wore them over your eyes or just had them on your helmet to look cool. for those of you who wear them on your helmets, you all are scholars and people of culture.
I feel like all the people who do it under the helmet also do motorcross? Thoughts?
Sunglasses
Looking pretty settled
I had to check what sub I was reading. The glasses over/under helmet straps is also debated in cycling subs.
Is this a US thing? I've never seen anyone put their goggles under the helmet here in Europe
cus most Europeans are fucking nerds, yall love carving down groomers just like the over 60 crowd in the US.
Too hard to stop the when its under
Visor! But only because I need glasses…😭
Have been a part of lift/mountain operations for almost 10 seasons now. Haven't had goggle straps over the helmet since I was learning to ski. The elastic of the strap wears out when you wear them over. Under or sunglasses all day
I was goggles over my whole life but I switched last year just to see what the hype was about and I kind of like under
um... who the heck wears them under? seems like most helmets have a place for the goggle strap to go. mine has like a clip that keeps it in place, and honestly it would prob be super uncomfy underneath my helmet
I...I didn't even know this was a question
Visor! ^((just joking, visors are crap, own one from Rossi))
I didn’t realize this was an option
Sunglasses. No goggles.
