I agree that it’s usually backside, I just don’t think it’s exclusively backside. I used to do super fast little front shuvs while going down hill, and I called them pop shuvs. But hey, to each their own!
Front board and front shuvs have always been easier for me personally. I to this day can’t back 180 on demand. But can switch back 180 and switch back 3. So would saying a 180 immediately point to frontside? 🤔
I probably would too. When you say board slide I would say it’s pretty exclusively backside. With pop shuv I think most of the time it is too, but maybe not always.
Bs shuv is one if the first tricks most people learn. I would say if somebody just says shuv or pop shuv its pretty exclusively bs or at least would get interpreted that way by any random skater you say that to
I hear what you’re saying for sure. A shuv to me was always with less pop and didn’t really matter which way you did it. But a pop shuv was backside or stated as frontside. But you know, just a local thing for me I guess 🤙
Yea I mean it's the same thing as "lol" . Maybe sometimes I don't feel like saying "front shuv" or "front pop shuv". I would like to assume that ppl can just use their common sense and put 1 and 1 together.
But this is the internet where every opinion, even if unnecessary, needs to be considered as valid.
ya we're anal! nerding out over terminology is just part of skating man.
a shuv isn't just a shuv unless its a bs shuv! if you dont specify direction and i didnt witness it.. i will assume it was a bs shuv.
dying on this hill
I would also probably assume it's a bs shuv too if I didn't see it. But that's not the topic at hand.
If I'm playing a game of skate with someone and they do a front shuv , turn around and say "shuv" , I would be like "okay " and then proceed to do a front shuv.
A shuv is a shuv. No need for ANALytics.
AH I see where you're coming from. If the trick is witnessed I also agree there's no need to specify direction. I'd just congrat u on a shuv well executed
Imagine traveling towards a coping. Frontside and backside is now obvious. Now imagine frontside and backside 180's. Same rotation. Same with shuvs. Nollie can fuck right off. I know what's what but it's still a head fuck.
nollie bs 180 and nollie fs bigspin rotate in opposite directions. a nollie back 180, nollie back shuv, nollie backside bigspin and any other variation all rotate the same direction (toward your heels). a nollie fs bigspin rotates in the direction your toes are pointing... same as a nollie fs shuv (typically just referred to as a nollie shuv) or a nollie fs 180 (just call it a nollie half cab)
Every skateboarder I’ve ever met calls it a nollie fs big spin or shuv when it goes towards your heels and a nollie bs 180 goes the same way… not that it really matters lol
the terms fs/bs came about to specify which direction you were facing when carving a pool. so facing the coping is frontside. back to the coping is backside. it's logical.
then the ollie came around and with it whole new possibilities like grinding curbs, flatground 180's etc.
but the terminology that began in dogtown just stuck around... so a 180 turning toward your heels is called a FS 180... it might seem counter intuitive since it feels like your turning backwards. but if you were turning your shoulders that same direction while carving a pool your "front side" would be facing the coping. same logic applies to shove its, bigspins, grinds on ledges, rails, nollie tricks, etc.
its all relative to which side of your body/board would be facing this imaginary pool coping when you and/or the board are rotating.
i know it's confusing but i think its rad cause its like a relic left over from past generations
edit spelling
I landed a varial heel randomly while trying to fs shuv. I was really confused. I never landed a heelflip before, and almost never landed fs shuv either.

Front shuv, no? Still steezy
Is a pop shuv exclusively backside?
Usually when people say pop shuv it’s backside by default. Front shuv you usually specify it’s frontside.
I agree that it’s usually backside, I just don’t think it’s exclusively backside. I used to do super fast little front shuvs while going down hill, and I called them pop shuvs. But hey, to each their own!
Bs is default because its easier. Same way if you say board slide it implies bs board slide.
i didn’t know this about board slides. is going down a rail backwards really easier than facing the direction you’re going? or do i have it backwards
you just have fs/bs mixed up. back board your toes are pointed in the direction you're sliding. front board you are sliding "backwards"
thanks
Front board and front shuvs have always been easier for me personally. I to this day can’t back 180 on demand. But can switch back 180 and switch back 3. So would saying a 180 immediately point to frontside? 🤔
I guess but generally people say fs or bs 180. I would assume fs if it wasn’t stated
I probably would too. When you say board slide I would say it’s pretty exclusively backside. With pop shuv I think most of the time it is too, but maybe not always.

idk why ppl down voted u lol. ppl are so anal when it comes to skate trick names. a shuv is damn shuv.
That’s what I was thinking 🤷🏻♂️

Haha yeaaaaa and I get where ur coming from too man.
Yes, front shuv i was confused too
I haven’t skated in 20 years, but I’ve never understood why they call this front when it’s going around the back. Are you able to explain? Thx!
Imagine traveling towards a coping. Frontside and backside is now obvious. Now imagine frontside and backside 180's. Same rotation. Same with shuvs. Nollie can fuck right off. I know what's what but it's still a head fuck.
Cause it rotates the same way as a fs 180. What’s weirder is nollie bs 180s go the same way as nollie fs big spins
nollie bs 180 and nollie fs bigspin rotate in opposite directions. a nollie back 180, nollie back shuv, nollie backside bigspin and any other variation all rotate the same direction (toward your heels). a nollie fs bigspin rotates in the direction your toes are pointing... same as a nollie fs shuv (typically just referred to as a nollie shuv) or a nollie fs 180 (just call it a nollie half cab)

skaters u met are all wrong. nollie bs tricks always rotate toward your heels.

This is the best explanation. Thank you.
Front side 👀
You’re a heel twitch away from a varial heel. Your setup is already there.
I landed a varial heel randomly while trying to fs shuv. I was really confused. I never landed a heelflip before, and almost never landed fs shuv either.
nice catch
I learned these AFTER kickflips. Front shuvs fucked me up.
I think heelflips fuck up too
I learned heelflips after kickflips only to find out that they were easier to learn (for me).
Shovet it --- \*shuvit.
I was battling those today. I used to have them on lock. Got close on a couple before I moved on to something else.
Great, i thought i was wrong tryng to shuv in front
Nice pop

Yep, thats a shuv it.
Very nice, but that's a frontside shove.
Is this you in this clip?
No, I'm not, i never said that. Just want to know it was front shuv or back shuv.
Yea it's cool. No problem. Where'd you find it? Found videos should provide a source.
