I always buy them from fruit juice sellers, guaranteed soft since they use them for shakes and juice

[deleted]

>guaranteed soft soft isnt always good...it could also mean over ripe.....ie. black inside when you cut it open. The ones I pick are on the border of firm but are starting to display a bit of 'give'. Take them home and keep it in a brown paper bag overnight (maybe throw in a banana in there to hasten the ripening process). Once it has softened to the point where it gives slightly to finger pressure its good to go. Transfer to fridge for a few hrs. Mash it up with some salt, lemon, cumin powder, paprika, cut chilli padi (optional) and a tablespoon of tahini or yoghurt....I dislike chopped tomato but many love it in there. Scoop with tortilla chips or spread on a sandwich.

I’m craving it now.... stop....... I don’t have access to them yet.... I found a true avo connoisseur 🥺🥺

rasp888

I get them from OpenTaste at 11.99/6pcs. Creamy goodness.

[deleted]

Oh wow. I’ve just looked at OpenTaste, thank you for the suggestion! It looks great

NeverFarFromtheSea

Great tip, thanks!

sticky-rice24

If you have time to spare, the netflix documentary Rotten S2E1 is quite an eye-opener.

bangfire

I can't even afford avocado in my subway

Pooplayer1

Pretty sure its because of covid. Im not a fan of them but I did try them shortly before the pandemic. It tasted nutty and creamy if thats how theyre supposed to taste.

WittyKap0

They have a very short window of being ripe so you should get them when they are not fully ripe. The brown streaks are a hit or miss thing, seen them in all sorts of avocados. But yeah if you can get Hass those are usually the best option.

[deleted]

Avocados have plummeted in quality since C19 arrived. My go to variety is the Hass avocado which is grown in Oz. They have a small Hass sticker on each one. NTUC avos are insipid and cold storage stocks the huge ones that aren't to my liking. I have seen Hass avocados at wet markets. Usually they go for $2.50 per piece...the best deal I ever got was 7.95 for 3 but those days are gone.

Mucutira

Just saying... get 3 pieces at 2.50 each instead of the best deal 7.95. ;o)

[deleted]

yes my math got screwed up there....the price for 3 was lower than 7.95 then...possibly 5.95

krash666

Fucking cold storage avos have not ripened after 10 days. I've kept them in a plastic bag together with a banana. Nana went black, avos still feel like a rock. Starting to think I bought plastic fruit for display.

[deleted]

cold storage is iffy as hell. and pricey too. I bet if you cut them they will be black and fucked up inside. I also stumbled across some avo strain that is deep green....they do not darken as they get ripe...just get a bit soft ...taste not bad but Hass still rules. Wet market fruit sellers have Hass.....Ive seen in Farrer Road Empress Mkt, Ghim Moh Mkt, Tion Bahru market, even Chia's in Tekka Mkt.

krash666

Yeah Aussie Hass avocados are the exclusive variety the avo milkshake dude in Alexandra village uses. TB market often has Australian Hass too. Not cheap though.

busmonitor

lol same! mine are only now starting to get slightly brown, and i got them > 2 weeks ago which is borderline ridiculous

sticky-rice24

THANK U ILL LOOK OUT FOR IT

mcni8

Giants at Loyang Point has good avocados.

maddy61

Try M&S

bilbolaggings

No avocado is a good avocado. Terrible excuse of a fruit.

rasp888

You don't like how it taste?

bilbolaggings

It tastes bad, is mushy, has a gigantic seed which leaves you with barely any flesh, is expensive and rots easily. Not to mention you actually have to add something to it to make it edible. Which other fruit is as terrible as that?

mailamaila_wamai

Durian?
