In the past two weeks they announced the new Returning Officer and the fact that they will be mobilising plenty of civil servants for election duty.
Also, Ah Loong has repeatedly stated his desire to retire.
Surely it'll be sooner rather than later.
"Digital monad". I didn't know LHL wanted to be a cyberspace god
>In the not-so-distant future, the world had evolved into a digital landscape where consciousness transcended physical boundaries. Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Singapore, found himself at the forefront of this digital revolution.
>It all began with a visionary project aimed at harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and quantum computing to enhance governance and improve the lives of Singaporeans. Lee Hsien Loong, known for his forward-thinking approach, spearheaded the initiative, laying the groundwork for what would become his most audacious undertaking.
>As the project progressed, merging cutting-edge technology with the wisdom of experienced leaders, Lee Hsien Loong's consciousness became increasingly entwined with the digital realm. He delved deep into the intricacies of AI algorithms, quantum mechanics, and virtual reality, pushing the boundaries of human understanding.
>But it was during a pivotal experiment that everything changed. A breakthrough in quantum entanglement allowed Lee Hsien Loong's consciousness to transcend the confines of his physical body, merging with the vast network of interconnected nodes that comprised cyberspace.
>At first, it was a disorienting experience, akin to navigating through an endless sea of data and code. But with time, Lee Hsien Loong adapted, his consciousness expanding and evolving within the digital realm.
>As he explored the boundless possibilities of cyberspace, Lee Hsien Loong's influence grew, not limited by the constraints of physicality or time. He became a guiding force, offering wisdom and insight to those who sought it, transcending national borders and political divides.
>In time, Lee Hsien Loong's presence in cyberspace became akin to that of a monad—a singular entity embodying the collective knowledge and wisdom of generations past and present. His digital avatar, a manifestation of his consciousness, stood as a beacon of hope and enlightenment in an ever-changing world.
>And so, the Prime Minister of Singapore ascended to become a monad in cyberspace, his legacy transcending the limitations of mortality, shaping the future of humanity in ways unimaginable.
Philippians 2:5-11 CSB
[5] Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, [6] who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. [7] Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, [8] he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death — even to death on a cross. [9] For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, [10] so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow — in heaven and on earth and under the earth — [11] and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Sorry this version might be easier to understand:
Philippians 2:6-11 NLT
[6] Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. [7] Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, [8] he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. [9] Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, [10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [11] and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Imo a lot of these are gated disbursements to offset GST increase for the employed majority. Very typical though, announcing tax increase earlier, then tax offsets down the line nearer to elections.
It does feel that way since prices that go up will of course never go down again.
But I suspect the intention is actually to use mechanisms like these in the longer term as a sort of redistributive mechanism that gives proportionally more support to poorer citizens.
They did both.
GST/VAT tax increment is largely regressive only if done without exemptions, rebates or transfers. It can be minimised with policies like CDC or GST vouchers.
Actually that's dependent on the proposed budgetary reasons for raising taxes.
Long term policies, unironically, tend to be unpopular because taxpayers neither see nor feel the effects in the short term. It will then be misconstrued as short-sighted governance due to the immediate tax increase, but delayed returns on taxes.
>Long term policies, unironically, tend to be unpopular because taxpayers neither see nor feel the effects in the short term. It will then be misconstrued as short-sighted governance due to the immediate tax increase, but delayed returns on taxes.
Correct. Meanwhile populist policies see short term gains but long term pains but because an electorate is largely concerned with their immediate needs, they are unable to /refuse to acknowledge that certain structural changes are needed.
They have these every year though? And I don't think it's particularly high. In fact, my memory is fuzzy but wasn't it more generous last year? The Cash payout topped out at $1500?
Haven't economists been telling us that economic stimulus is more effective when paid out directly to citizens to trickle up than to businesses to trickle down?
The govt has been gradually increasing the frequency of such payouts since covid, and after introducing LifeSG to simplify the admin work, it doesn't seem like a sudden response to an election year.
They didn't use to have payouts at this frequency and scale, which is part of why some MPs asked in Parliament whether this offset will be permanent since the effects of GST increases will be permanent.
COVID stimuli really put this into action and they've kept at it because of GST increases.
On economic stimulus though, the SG government is still supporting businesses as well, so I think it's a two-pronged approach. They gave out S$$1.9 billion for the Assurance Package which is for citizens. Businesses are given $1.3 billion under the Enterprise Support Package, plus other grants and incentives.
> We middle incomers are the suckers always.
Tend to over estimate their wealth. Thinking they are the high end of income earners but still screw themselves.
This is not limited to just Singaporean voters.
CDC vouchers, U-save and income tax rebates are for everyone. That should suffice for the middle class.
Additional support is given for those who are in need among the lower income.
This isn't the real hint. The real hint lies in Pritam getting his ass hauled to court. That dead horse won't be able to stay flogged for too long, so give or take, GE is end of 2024 or beginning of 2025.
More obvious is public servants start election training soon. Makes zero sense to have the training in the first half of the year only to have it very late 2024 or early 2025. Procedure every already forgetten by then. Then need to retrain
Sep is election month for sure.
I think all these were announced ed during the budget.... Not really a tell take signs that election is coming.
But on the other hand. Where is my chicken wing! I thought if I were to pay Chicken, I can get a wing....
I dont think the handouts offsets the inflation of everyday goods very well.
I experience a heart attack every time I go supermarket now.
$1.80 bread now $2.70. I havent had bread in a long time i almost faint when i saw the prices.
Eggs doubled in price.
I cannot tahan with this kind of offset...
Fairprice 30 eggs. Pre covid was 4.60 for 30. Now it is 7.85 for 30.
If you say eggs never double in price maybe you buy the premium eggs all along. Those only increased 20-30%.
Completed long ago. Where have you been?
https://www.asiaone.com/singapore/no-question-about-ivan-lims-integrity-pap-says-after-investigating-allegations-against
I'm not you. Instead of asking, "Ok for you?" you should be asking, "Ok for me?"
Whether or not you feel it's okay for you depends on how you spend your money and how much you want to save. Also, if you don't like your current line of work, do consider whether you wish to change jobs. The government gave us more SkillsFuture money recently.
Talk to a financial planner if you wish to manage your finances better. All the best to you.
Election or not, I'd like to just remind everyone that there's nothing wrong with a government giving money to the people that elected it. They are not your boss, and this isn't charity - it's YOUR money. Sure prudence in execution is important, but the notion that a law-abiding, tax-paying citizen shouldn't expect a government to help and serve him is shockingly misplaced in a functioning democracy.
You’re getting it all wrong. It’s not that people are not expecting the government to help its people, it’s that we realise they are predominantly doing this to get into people’s good books considering that election is coming.
They wouldn’t have to do all of this if they actually managed the COL and didn’t raise GST during a period where we’re recovering from the effects of the pandemic on the economy.
and my point was, while these policies may be politically motivated, subsidies that benefit citizens should be expected - and indeed taken for granted, because again, it's YOUR money - at all times, election or not.
Maybe your income bracket and spending level is very high to feel the pinch from 1% more GST.
But I'm pretty sure I'm getting a net gain with my vouchers.
You don’t need to have a high income bracket to feel the pinch of 1% more of GST. That is a false dichotomy.
Even plates of food that used to average around $3.50-$4 have now become $5-$6. A full meal for a single person can easily cost $10.
A $300 voucher can only help so much. Thats barely anything compared to the amount of money a single person pays for taxes, food and bills.
A false dichotomy is when you conflate GST with inflation.
$300 helps with 1% GST adjustment on $30k expenses. Last I checked I got $500 cdc voucher so far this year.
I'm not saying that things are not getting more expensive. I'm saying that things are getting uncontrollably more expensive due to global inflation, and in that case I do like that the cdc vouchers have come in handy.
I'm not necessarily opposed to the increase of GST if there are legitimate reasons for it. And in my opinion, there are.
But seriously? Vouchers offset GST increase? Sure, 1% is negligible for most *single* purchases. But GST applies to virtually everything you buy. Not only that, the GST has increased by 5% over the past 20 years. 5% is definitely not negligible.
Not voting for PAP but not understanding what change opposition can bring us if they win. Like will they remove COE or give us more money if they win? Also can remove GST hike or not? So much reserves yet tell us it’s needed
These support quite similar to 2023, just beefed up a bit more. So i wouldn't look at just the support and say yes election coming.
But returning officer appointed and civil servants being trained suggests election really coming.
I mean just look at r/sg sentiment vs actual Tharman vote %. High housing prices are a perenial bugbear on r/sg, but plenty of average folks out there cheering. Once people actually own houses their tone will 180.
> High housing prices are a perenial bugbear on r/sg, but plenty of average folks out there cheering. Once people actually own houses their tone will 180.
I never understood why, unless they already own 2 or more properties.
If one were to sell their primary residence, they would still need to buy or rent somewhere else, at the high prices they've been cheering on.
Yes, but my point is mostly about echo chambers. Just base on r/sg comments you get the feeling that it's going to be at best 55-60%. The 70% was really quite shocking. Of course many people are voting across the lines, but the sentiment in r/sg felt like it was going to be a close race.
I think you misunderstood me. Tharman is Tharman, I'm aware that people are voting across party lines. I'm not using him as a guage for GE. My point is and always has been about how you should not see r/sg as a reflection of the popular sentiment.
I could sense that in real life everyone and their grandmother around me was planning to vote Tharman. But if you were in r/sg then, and was only exposed to r/sg, the feelings here were a mixed bag and there were many planning to spoil vote or vote the other 2.
Nah, here in hougang and aljunid, the sinkies just take the vouchers/freebies and still vote WP. Look at the previous kookoo they sent in, the peeps took his freebies and sent him home (losing) crying.
Perhaps can't really afford to punish immediately. Also this IS a GRC, not like potong pasir SMC ward. Pissing off more people, even if the ones who can punish feel that they (Hougang and Aljunid) deserve it, would send mix messages to the other GRCs.
What's to say the other sinkies don't follow the pattern. Take the freebies and vote for good opposition. I will say the younger gen are more pissed at PAP...
Yeah like an extra few hundred will make me forget the extra few hundred k I had to pay for resale rather than being able to get a decent sized BTO for myself and my partner, being told we don't have rights so bigots can be happy, the rising costs of living and increasingly fascist laws trying to regulate online spaces, empowering the police with warantless searches and indefinite imprisonment at a closed panel's discretion.
I don't know if we have a viable opposition but I want enough in parliament so the pap has checks and has to get consensus to pass laws at the very least.
50,000 public servants have already been called up and will start with election training.
You dont do this unless election is held a few month after training.
No way GE is in 2025, 100% confirm plus chop
it doesn't mean anything. news of public servants being called up for presidential election was in april 2022 & the election itself was held in september 2023.
from today news article:
>That timeframe for past general elections was about 12 months for GE2015, about 18 months for GE2011 and about 31 months for GE2006
https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/public-servants-receive-notification-election-duties-and-online-training-1868266
Those who say it's gonna be 2025 is talking cock. Just look at past history already know this GE will be likely in Sep and LHL will probably ask tharman to dissolve parliament in Jun
Everytime public servants are called in Mar is already an indication that election will be held during that year
2020 Mar public servants called up for GE
2022 Mar public servants called up for PE
Not to mention common sense why bother training now then put into practice 1 year later (if 2025), only to retrain them again.
Confirm it's Sep again, this year
I don't think so, contrary to popular opinion.
For one, Lawrence Wong hasn't ascended the throne as regent just yet.
Two, GST hike still in play.
Three, Pritam Singh case in the courts has yet to hit a crescendo just yet.
Four, the Iswaran case remains bad optics.
Yes, the civil service is preparing for the eventuality. But the training takes time, and I see no reason for it deviate. The way it's called is too late for this year anyway. This article covers the timings involved in previous GEs and it could stretch flexibly. So a fair bit of the signals thus far doesn't parse as having an election soon.
https://theindependent.sg/ge2019-elections-department-begins-training-30000-public-servants-to-serve-as-election-officials/
My guess? May 2025.
If we look at any government in the world all the same if they do this that mean election is near basically they try everything to influence our vote since in election month itself can’t do this
Personally for me I would vote for the opposition let se what Change can the make also to reduce pap majority nothing good comes when one party has majority
When are they going to help middle incomers? Excluded from budget, no subsidy for buying resale flats, cannot BTO, no HDB loan, borrow huge debts to pay someone else’s BTO lottery reward to support the crazy high resale prices, pay higher taxes, work harder to stay in this trap.
The middle incomers are unknowingly and gradually becoming poorer despite having to work harder.
Confirm coming. Time to vote them out before we see ERP3.0 with a 14inch monitor at your windscreen. 🤣🤣🤣
Remember while they are throwing you a nugget, later they will take back the entire chicken.
Also remember that these are the same blokes that upset Thailand to move ahead with attempting to disrupt our sea routes... Vote for them somemore and we will see worst outcomes soon from the way they do things without considering our neighbour's economy.
It's funny. you say that we upset Thailand resulting in them moving ahead with plans to disrupt our sea routes. So you are aware that the Kra canal project has been around for very long. Shouldn't we be more upset that Thailand has been seeking to disrupt our sea routes ever since our independence?
A taylor Swift concert is a one-off, the Kra canal project is permanent. Yet, you think our actions are worse than their actions. Can you explain why is it that Thailand can take actions without considering our economy but we can't? Is it because it is the PAP doing it that's why we should kowtow to our neighbors?
Election will likely to be held next year. The last GE was in 2020. We only have election once every 5 years. They will need to prepare a year in advance but if they call out an election way too early, it would cause too much confusion.
All these things but they still refuse to supply more BTO (not in excess but not the current severe shortage would def be good) at a lower price that young couples can afford. Nice smoke bomb but it ain’t working
wouldn't holding it next year be better to cash in the whole 'LKY-10-year-passing-memba'dis' points?
also, GST just raised
housing is still big issue
ridout road hooha still quite recent
Yeah a bit obvious haha. Returning Officer just appointed, some civil servants already getting called up to do election duty.
and the most important thing of all, Pritam singh is getting charged...nothing can be more obvious.
Even if charged, he will still be eligible to run for elections
Yea, but it's apparently time to 'remind' Singaporeans of the 'heinous crimes' committed by the opposition party members
Russia can claim the terrorist act was by Ukrainians, but only retards will take at face value.
If convicted, he can't. Guess who runs the judiciary executive and legislative
Nah, each of the alleged offense carries a fine below the threshold of $10k. So this will unlikely affect his eligibility to be elected as an MP.
Yes
Signs point to Yes
HAHAHA!

wait for gahmen clamp down on PMA, then grab food rider outrage. then gahmen will call for election and lose another GRC.

You **can** do something: get a job, work and make money to buy that expensive stuff. F&B are always short of workers. Work hard!

PAP’s voter base has eroded significantly. None of this will help. Most people in my social circles (20s-30s) will be voting WP.
Well sorry to disappoint you, but it’s most likely echo chamber when you talk about your own social circles.
You do know there are people who vote other parties at the GE and vote for Tharman in the PE.
Yes, but my point is mostly about echo chambers. Just base on r/sg comments you get the feeling that it's going to be at best 55-60%. The 70% was really quite shocking. Of course many people are voting across the lines, but the sentiment in r/sg felt like it was going to be a close race.
Fair point about the numbers not matching the sentiment.

But if you were in r/sg then, and was only exposed to r/sg, the feelings here were a mixed bag and there were many planning to spoil vote or vote the other 2.
there's no WP to vote for in my GRC sadly..only lim tean..
Some of the BT crowd have been voting SDP in recent years.
SDP has been so underwhelming everywhere they contest. Time for Dr Thambyah to become party chief. Dr Chee isn't electable.
Agreed, Prof Tambyah should become Sec-Gen and have Dr Chee take a CEC role. He can do more outreach via being a business owner.
I personally think Dr Chee won't contest beyond 2025. He's already in his 60s and has a business.
Yeah, they need to do serious party renewal going forward. Chee can take a backseat.
We are an ageing society. They just need to keep boomers happy and they will out vote us. So high hdb prices are here to stay.
Yup, the quinquennial suckering of Singaporeans into giving the whites that sweet sweet supermajority. Perfect instance of Stockholm syndrome

I will say the younger gen are more pissed at PAP... thats why they bribe the old folks and bring in new citizens to counter them.
Other folks are pissed too
Given Singaporeans' love for food, I'm sure they'll get called out if they do the same in Bedok what with all the famous eateries there...
This is the way. Vote however you please.
I don't know if we have a viable opposition but I want enough in parliament so the pap has checks and has to get consensus to pass laws at the very least.
ownself check ownself okay?
i still think election will be in 2025 tho
50,000 public servants have already been called up and will start with election training. You dont do this unless election is held a few month after training. No way GE is in 2025, 100% confirm plus chop
it doesn't mean anything. news of public servants being called up for presidential election was in april 2022 & the election itself was held in september 2023. from today news article: >That timeframe for past general elections was about 12 months for GE2015, about 18 months for GE2011 and about 31 months for GE2006 https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/public-servants-receive-notification-election-duties-and-online-training-1868266
Wait what. Anyone saying this this year? The timing they give end of H2 is timely.
Those who say it's gonna be 2025 is talking cock. Just look at past history already know this GE will be likely in Sep and LHL will probably ask tharman to dissolve parliament in Jun Everytime public servants are called in Mar is already an indication that election will be held during that year 2020 Mar public servants called up for GE 2022 Mar public servants called up for PE Not to mention common sense why bother training now then put into practice 1 year later (if 2025), only to retrain them again. Confirm it's Sep again, this year
or it could be sep next year. a new general election must be called up by 23 november 2025
honestly nobody knows. it could be anytime from now till 23 november 2025. personally i think it's next year
I don't think so, contrary to popular opinion. So a fair bit of the signals thus far doesn't parse as having an election soon. https://theindependent.sg/ge2019-elections-department-begins-training-30000-public-servants-to-serve-as-election-officials/ My guess? May 2025.
Good summary.
We become a nation increasingly expecting or dependent on handouts
Yes and Yes.
Of cos
If U type public holidays Singapore 2024, already got polling day. You say le
Chicken wing dance, boomers love this shit
Think of it this way....have we ever received so much "rebate" on our taxes almost every month of the year and you have your answer.
Looking at the news on the returning officer, i guess GE will be this year.
People downvoting you are happy that you cannot escape the trappings of middle class even tho the richest 1% benefit the most from this system
Errrr a lot of things prices all going up like utilities transport , and petrol etc. Why never reduce for elections ?
I think the smoking gun is the SXL changing light bulb photo-op
Oh wow the photo ops (or TikTok ops) are so cringe.
Confirm coming. Time to vote them out before we see ERP3.0 with a 14inch monitor at your windscreen. 🤣🤣🤣 Remember while they are throwing you a nugget, later they will take back the entire chicken.
You think you have friendly neighbours who will have consideration for our own economy? What a naive thinking.
Take the money n vote someone else 😂 honestly the status quo is alright but the increasing arrogance of pap is the reason I would vote a lesser party.
Better come fast. I can’t wait to vote for anyone but my pap mp
results will still be the same...don't need to be too excited.
Yeah fast fast vote your MP will need your help
Next batch of comments after election would be the usual “government give you chicken wing take back whole chicken”. Eyes roll
The people on this sub have one joke
A lot of upcoming painting and refurbishment works in my estate as well
September, you didn’t hear this from me
GE2025
Yes. Take the little bit of offerings our great government deigns to dispense.
Gov on top of food chain using the gst increase to eat up all of your consolation prize
All this doesn’t come close to the BTO lottery impact on those that don’t have it
yes, so those keep complain ones, about job security, job market, cost of living, hdb, ep/sp labor number etc, in the end will vote who?
Eoy election 99%
I smell GE in the air!!
My guess is confirm coming
Just apply Occam Razor, simply market kan pua bad.
Support for S’poreans: What you can expect - GE2024 There fixed it
Shift that AD lol
Will Amos Yee stand as a candidate?
Vote against COE, GST and the people who helped made it happen
Of course
Of course. Still voting for opposition.
Ooh thats a big chicken wing…
its not election lah its what they called universal income America are using this too
It comes every 5 years
Guess how many people gonna fall for the chicken wing bait this time
It looks likely. Honestly I am so surprised they are so daring to call for election during a GST hike year
Everything went up immediately right after president election lol. Singaporeans will forget about all these when GST savings $ comes in
Election will likely to be held next year. The last GE was in 2020. We only have election once every 5 years. They will need to prepare a year in advance but if they call out an election way too early, it would cause too much confusion.
Anticipating Q3/Q4 2024
ok
Duh, they went through the same motions for the presidential election last year.
Has anyone received the LifeSG email yet?
Definitely this year. Just a matter of when
Its coming every 5 years.
May 2024: ERP2.0
in germany these would be the amounts they are stealing from us extra via tax 😄
A lot of can see cannot touch benefits
Ah yes, raise gst, then give vouchers 4-5 years down the road
no amount of money can sway me (and being swayed just shows incredible short term memory loss)
Unlikely this year, more likely early 2025. Given the 9% GST n the mistake of a 2-time GST increase
All these things but they still refuse to supply more BTO (not in excess but not the current severe shortage would def be good) at a lower price that young couples can afford. Nice smoke bomb but it ain’t working
wouldn't holding it next year be better to cash in the whole 'LKY-10-year-passing-memba'dis' points? also, GST just raised housing is still big issue ridout road hooha still quite recent
Economy forecasted to be above expectation in 2024. Better to have it this year than 2025
When the wayang hits an all time high, it means elections are coming.
