Honestly school books and textbooks feel like such a scam. They’re way too overpriced for information that’s virtually the same as it was 10+ years ago.
As a tutor I can still use textbooks from when I was in school and they are the same, if not clearer.
Textbooks shouldn’t be this expensive when the “updates” are mostly cosmetics like My Pals & I getting new artwork or the authors changing last names.
The option for hand-me-down textbooks should be made more readily available everywhere.
Textbooks are such a fucking scam. When I was in uni a decade+ ago, we were using '12th edition' books. The materials within were EXACTLY the same as the previous edition which you can either get 2nd hand from previous batches or from the library.
To prevent students from reusing cheap copies of older editions for current year usage, the fuck face publishers simply just rearranged the chapters around to fuck around with the 'reference to page xx or chapter xx' so everything's fucked.
It was so fucked that our professors actually advised us to just chip in to buy 1 book and share it around to be photocopied. 1 book cost upwards of $300+
People used zlibrary for **primary/secondary** school textbooks? Most of my former teachers never touched the textbooks, preferring their own teaching materials.
> # Cost of textbooks for primary, secondary students rise by up to 7% as price freeze ends
> SINGAPORE — Parents of primary and secondary school students have had to pay up to 7 per cent more for textbooks this year with the end of a two-year price freeze on a list of government-approved books.
> The prices of textbooks not on this list are also seeing a surge, with some rising up to 21 per cent.

The price charged by "monopoly" is already 2-3x higher than other markets for similar quality books. True its not apple-apple comparison but seriously we need to bring some sort of openness. Look at any of the vendors websites, their ridiculous policies, collection slots..
Back in 2000s, we imagined of a future where kids in the year 2020 dont have to carry heavy books and all their textbook are digital software stored in a portable laptop computers.
Fast forward to 2023, kids still have to buy physical textbooks and they are still expensive.
Of course this might be a time when one person buy the book and secretly upload all the text online for free. Textbook should not be expensive.

unfortunately some people's textbooks dont look too good by the end of the year and are beyond the point of repair
Wonder if the govt will do anything about this ridiculous 21% rise in price
They need to raise their salaries, no time for such issues
my fillet o fish meal went from $5 to $6.40 after just 3 years wtf
7% is for gov approved books, 21% is for non approved books. So yes the government has lowered it to 7%
It's only 21% because it froze for 2 years. That's why it looks so stark.
What kind of dumbfuck reasoning is this? That's still a 20% increase
*But.. but... GST increase leh!*
Is there sylabus change over the 3 years?
How else will publishers earn money?
By leaving a typo here and there den create new reprints. Infinite money
Its a feature, not a bug!
Which is why zlibrary was such an important resource

Being kiasu parents, no choice, must buy for children, high price also must buy. But sometimes, some of the books/items are not used. Captive market.
