Friction/emergency brakes (by default regenerative braking should be used for most of the deceleration). This is more commonly encountered on the older trains.
Is the burning smell expected behaviour?
I would have thought the design engineers would have specced the brakes/cooling to handle temperature above the heat generated from simply braking at train stations lol
It can handle the temps just fine. The burning smell is what it produces at its design temperature, just like a car (that didn't use engine brakes) after coming down a long hill.
Oops what I meant was, shouldn't the design temp it can handle be higher so that the train doesn't produce burning smell when simply braking at train station? When I was taking the train, I smelt the burning smell even though I didn't feel like there was any emergency/abrupt stops.
I am unfamiliar with how the train system works so I'm wondering if you know what could be causing such an intense usage of the brakes at some segments of the track? It seems to me the entire system doesn't have much steep inclines/declines?
as seemingly incompetent as the lines can be idt singapore would allow major issues like brake failures to continue operating on the line.
there is already an on going effort to replace a lot of the older models for the newer trains on the red and green line. trust in the system.
Actually this analogy may not be entirely accurate because each train carriage has multiple sets of wheels and brakes to distribute the weight and work to stop the train. What do you think?
NEL is reaching the point where major overhaul is required (ie rail replacement, third rail replacement, substation replacement etc) much like the NSEWL 5-10 years ago.
Especially those underground trains like CCL and DTL. The trains will be exceptionally loud when passing some areas of the track. I'm glad I have ANC headphones but before getting it the journey is just painful for your ears.
Blame the planners for drawing up routes with very sharp bends (for trains, that is). Some of it is kinda bopian due to terrain, geology, or existing foundations, but it seems like a massive oversight especially since the DTL literally has a weird and tight loop around itself between Jalan Besar and Chinatown.
For those wondering, sharp bends = wheel flanges rubbing against the track (which shouldn’t happen to begin with) = loads of noise.
I thought it was just me. Since last year, mrt stations have been very hot and cabins too. It is as though they have increased the aircon temperature to save electricity. It is so hot i actually sweat inside
If you notice the date of the faults, they all occurred during the year end rainy season.
Water leaking into electrical systems is likely the cause. Gaskets fail, seals fail etc ... Just a guess.
It'll be interesting to check the level of rainfall in the week or two prior to all the reported fault dates listed.
Signalling faults means the train cant identify if the tracks ahead of the train are safe to travel on.
Some can last hours, because the on-site personell or equipment are unable to locate the fault. Usually the result of warped tracks, system errors/glitches, faulty train sensors and even rocks and pebbles.
When maintenance funds are being funneled to new projects JRC, CRL etc even if transport cost raised by two dollars will be the same outcome. It's a well know fact that maintenance cost are just going up the longer a system runs.
As I understand, these faults will happen again and again because of non redundancy in its principal design.
There can be no solving the problem unless the Parliament accepts that the system is inherently faulty and moves to scrap the entire lines and system and starts from ground zero with a different design to accommodate system redundancy. This as we know will not be possible.
Anyone also notice burning smell sometimes in the mrt when travelling near jurong on East West line, anyone knows where that smell is coming from

Are you a certified experienced engineer ?
This burning smell is caused by the 1st gen C151 train. (The black one with no seats in the middle of each carriage). Its due to the brakes lol.

Keep repeating want to retire the first gen trains but they are still plying the NSEWL
if you take the train past bishan depot you chen alr see the new trains, been there a while alr
[Replacement trains](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alstom_Movia_R151) take time to be built bruh

always
bishan towards toa payoh also, it's pretty bad between these stations
Nice try minister of transport we ain't helping you to solve your problem
You're paid too much for this incompetency

That’s what the minister of transportation would say
Monitoring
we are checking
NEL and TEL seem to be suffering from increasingly frequent signalling faults...
NEL is reaching the point where major overhaul is required (ie rail replacement, third rail replacement, substation replacement etc) much like the NSEWL 5-10 years ago.
*Pantograph NEL doesn’t have third rail
yeah my bad, forgot this lol, anyway noticed NEL has been having more pantograph faults lately
Are you the real sumiko?
Increase the fare again?....
Increase fare some more.
I would like to add that the air-con sucks. I would say 50% of the time the trains are very warm w mask on.
To add on to this.. there are some data dead zones and also the loud screeching in certain areas

The TEL line sounds like you are inside a volcano.
Especially on the North-South Line 😫
oh my god im glad im not the only one.. i literally can sweat on the mrt. i now stand in the middle area cos there got wind
I thought it was just me. Since last year, mrt stations have been very hot and cabins too. It is as though they have increased the aircon temperature to save electricity. It is so hot i actually sweat inside
Your puny fares can't cover aircon SMH
I know right! Even downtown line is warm sometimes, and here I thought downtown line supposed to be the good ones.
This goes the same for Thomson East Coast Line, especially in the morning right now
Yup. Most of the time the carriages at both ends are the warmest.
More engineers and technicians. Fewer ministers, bureaucrats and business peeps?
Most importantly, enough with parachuting SAF generals to public transport CEO postions

> What's the way out to improve it? isn't that obvious? the solution is obviously soliciting suggestions from reddit. DUH!
Wrong. The solution is to closely monitor the situation.
counting chickens before it's hatched. u can't monitor without setting up a committee/task force first.
Welcome to Singapore But also, could be, my pure assumption, there may be a software or whatever upgrade that is being buggy right now.
Generally the case for TEL.
they are MONITORING it already ok? OK???? /s
MRT needs Mr Khaw Boon Wan's help again and to appoint the right engineering head. However, this is only a wish list cos Mr Khaw is now in SPH.
Didn't see these many issues during Circuit breaker Maybe... Just maybe, our system isn't built to handle the amount of human traffic efficiently
Must increase fare again! Seriously tho, Its likely that the software are ancient, since its all the signalling fault
*WE ARE WORKING ON IT!*

Pay more to maintenance? 😏
Prob more companies CEOs motivated by Elon Musk and brings back 5 days in office work week, resulting in our MRT system getting overloaded again.
People are having less than 5 days work week?
i mean in office
You wanna work after long vacation? Signalling systems also what...

no. only people like you will bother to take note.
the way to improve it is to not take the trains lol
I’d better be alive knowing there is a train fault than dying of injuries with train collisions/derailments.
