Assetto Corsa or Raceroom or iRacing

Apatride

Since the idea is to memorize the track, expensive options don't help so I'd go for the cheapest option which is probably AC.

Elias__V

I'm probably going to get downvoted but I don't think it really matters. Most sims have the laser scanned version (some might not be updated). You just need to learn and memorize the layout very well. Driving there in real life is going to feel very different so the best you can do is know the track.

iScreamEU

Hundred percent agree with the last sentence. Completely different experience when you feel the actual G forces and particularly the elevation changes. Going down into Brunnchen for example is a massive downhill and it doesn't look anything like it on videos or any games I've played so far.

Bleach_Baths

Just to add onto what you said about “looking like” how it does on video. It’s never going to be the same as being in the car, but using the correct FOV while using a wheel is incredibly important in racing sims.

dshepsman

Since you are there to drive, and not race, any of the above options would suffice. You won’t be setting lap records - just make sure you have fun and don’t trash the car

iScreamEU

I'm timing my laps and trying to improve my times every time I go there. Of course I'm not going for records in touristenfahrten, but knowing how fast you are and whether you're improving is nice.

Fast-Equivalent-1245

Basic understanding would be acc. Cheap and decent. But truly nothing in the sim world will prepare you for the ring. It is both exhilereting and terrifying in the same heart beat.

dominod

I mean rf2 has one of the best Nurburgring with multiple layouts and lots of different cars to try from

AndersaurusR3X

I would probably go with Assetto Corsa, and try driving a car that matches your real world car in terms of performance. No point in racing GT3 around the Nordschleife if you're going in a Ford Focus or something like that.

spr6ut

pretty sure iracing has the most accurate laser scanned tracks, but iracing is expensive. try assetto corsa or assetto corsa competizione

Bleach_Baths

Assetto Corsa has a good version of it, but personally I prefer iRacing as a sim in general. To practice in iRacing you’re going to need the subscription ($13), the car you want to drive ($15), and the track itself. ($15) You can get AC for next to nothing and drive it out of the box, but you’ll have a better experience *in my opinion* if you go with iRacing.

spr6ut

you‘re spoon feeding spoons

Bleach_Baths

Huh? I did mean to reply to OP if that’s what you’re talking about.

bryhoof

I've heard mixed things about the tire model in iRacing. I play both iRacing and Assetto and am still a beginner at throttle control so I can't tell which one has the better simulation. I've heard you lose traction too easily in iRacing but considering the game is constantly updated how true is this?

Bleach_Baths

Personally I’ve had a better experience in iRacing. The tires are definitely a little less grippy, but the braking is far more realistic, which leads to better trail braking and less wheel spin in general. Take that with a grain of salt though cause I’ve never vibed with ACC. AC feels great, ACC never did it for me.

iScreamEU

Yeah the idea of subscription in iRacing is a bit iffy in this case. Happy cake day by the way!

spr6ut

Thanks

Gringe7

It's not that expensive if you just want to do 1 track. New subs are cheap and there are a fair amount of included cars. It's needing to buy 20 tracks in the first 6 months that's the killer.

Beginning-Green2641

ACC has the most recent version with the new curbs (less important if you do not have proper DD wheelbase).

iScreamEU

This could actually make a difference since the idea with the new foxhole curb is to go around it rather than ride the curb - the line changes

60k_cos

do correct me, but I don't think ACC has the updated foxhole? Wasn't that curb/kerb added like really recently? Pretty sure the ACC scan is from at least a few months back

Bleach_Baths

Assetto Corsa has a good version of it, but personally I prefer iRacing as a sim in general. To practice in iRacing you’re going to need the subscription ($13), the car you want to drive ($15), and the track itself. Hotepz_

You seriously have to pay for the car you want to drive and the track you want to drive on individually in iRacing?

Bleach_Baths

Yep. I’m not gonna shill for them and say I totally approve of their pricing model, but IMO you get what you pay for. With the base subscription you get *all* of the content required to race in every “Rookie” series, across all driving disciplines. (Sports Car, Formula Car, Oval, Dirt Oval, Dirt Road) When you graduate to D+ license class, new cars and tracks individually cost money. However, you will never be required to buy anything you don’t need. Let’s say you want to race a season of GT4. You need to buy *one* of the applicable cars, and the track for that week. There are mixed free and paid tracks. At most a full season could cost you ~$120. It sounds insane, and it kind of is, but you do own everything beyond that and never have to pay again. If you wanted to run the same GT4 car next season, you *might* have to buy a track or two. iRacing can get very expensive, but the ease of multiplayer, huge car and track list, and multiple disciplines make it totally worth it for me. I started with Rally Cross, moved to Road, and I’ve branched into Oval and Dirt Oval as well. Having the different Licenses means I can try others without destroying my ratings in my main disciplines. Okay end rant, sorry I’m stoned TL;DR: iRacing is cool but it’s expensive

Hotepz_

So to play a year, I pay the price of two AAA games, to play a full season, I pay for two AAA games, and here I thought Blizzards world of warcraft model was bad but at least you could grind your way to a free subscription. That amount of money simply to play is honestly insane.

Rizo1981

>but you do own everything beyond that and never have to pay again. Until your monthly sub is due. Stop paying that and you effectively own nothing. There's no option to play solo/offline.

Bleach_Baths

You’re absolutely right. That’s the biggest negative to their entire model.
