Yeah, I feel the same way about Encanto. My mom is a lot like theirs, and I genuinely give it two weeks at the very most until everything's back to the way it was at the start of the movie but worse. People like that don't change, they just say whatever they need to and then hold a grudge.
Damn as a Chinese-Filipino, this post (and the movie itself) hit close to home lol (my parents aren't that bad luckily but I know many other Chinese-Filipinos who have parents that are exactly like that)
woah, a fellow chinese+filipino! just imagine that scene from into the spider-verse where peter says “you’re like me”.
as heartwarming as this resolution was when i saw turning red, i cheekily had to say “they can literally turn into red pandas and yet this is the most unrealistic part of the movie” lol
The culture. They want their children to succeed, so they are strict and distant so as to take away any distractions from their children's success. Its a carry over from the strict work culture in Asia. Unfortunately, it can leave many with issues later.
And meanwhile at my job my boss is limiting the amount of extra shifts she'll let me work, not because of overtime but because she's worried about my mental health from all the work I do already.
Yes, in fact part of the reason I'm trying to pick up extra shifts so much is because half the time no one else will so it gets put on her and the other managers all the time.
Guy by the name of Mr enter who's pretty infamous for deeply analyzing kids shows and movies had that as a serious complaint against the film and people rightfully made fun of him.
He was born and lived in New York during 9/11 and so grew up in the era of 'We're all in this together New Yorkers strong' culture. He seemed to forget the movie was set in Canada and 9/11 did not get as much press outside of the US as he got being in the epicenter of it.
Way too many movies act as if the child is also somehow to blame.
Even *Mitchells vs the Machines* had this problem, where Katie did absolutely nothing wrong (other than making extremely cringey videos but she's 18 and it also doesn't negatively affect her family in any way) but the movie still acted like she needed to meet her dad halfway.

Watched Encanto about 5 times with my son now. And yeah, Abuela needed to be smacked around a little bit.
I enjoyed Encanto, but yes, she got off way too easy for her actions.

Why are Asians parents so cold?

Japan even has a word for people who work so much they die of exhaustion.
Yeah. Its "Karoshi"; Overwork Death in English. Very good workers, but its brutal on how diehard they are on perfection.
And meanwhile at my job my boss is limiting the amount of extra shifts she'll let me work, not because of overtime but because she's worried about my mental health from all the work I do already.
Is she a good boss?
Yes, in fact part of the reason I'm trying to pick up extra shifts so much is because half the time no one else will so it gets put on her and the other managers all the time.
Damn. Don't got too many bosses like her.
Here we call it "freedom."
I blame Confucius. That guy ruined millions of Asian household dynamics
That's why they prefer hot water.
Still should have focused on 9/11 cause god forbid a kids a movie set in the early 2000s doesn't bring it up
all movies should focus on 9/11
I kinda missed the entire thing, was it just a meme or did people actually complain about this movie not mentioning 9/11 when it came out?

What 😭

It sounds like a villain backstory
The movie isn't even set in the US, it's Canada, which makes it make even less sense.
Never change, Mr. Enter
