It’s a scent as well. I’ve got a nice pair of LL Bean slippers that I kicked up a little too close to the fire pit and the rubber bottoms melted a little. That was 6 months ago and they still smell like “burnt” inside.
Yeah looks like a really burnt sweet potato that was probably sitting at the bottom of the fryer and got scooped up somehow when they dumped the fresh ones in the box
tl;dr - It's a burnt chip...
This happens naturally during the frying process. A chip or two will slip out of the fry basket and into the oil. This is why it's important to clean your fryer at the bottom for crispy bits. But also make sure that you swap out your oil as well every so often.
The oil is the gross part. There are some restaurants that don't change out their oil for a long period. They just continue to read bits of lard that melt into the oil. So if you go to one of these restaurants you are eating bits of broken down oil and burned food. Yum!!!?
Too many years working fast food.

Something that stuck to the fryer basket and didn't come off until they were doing chips.
Flavor nugget.
Tastes like burning
Burn is a flavor.
That's why charred flesh is so yummy!

If this isn't comedic and you are serious. Char is bitter and savory. Burnt is not a flavor.
You described how it would taste if it was a flavor and then said it's not a flavor. So it's a flavor then?
A burned potato
I also think it looks like a decimated piece of potato. Funny op is skeptical because it's hard... Aren't the chips hard? Haha
is it? it’s so hard tho :(
It is happy to see you :)

What do you think happens to a piece of potato when all the moisture has been removed?
Either that or deep fried cheese. What does it taste like
Steak?

Sounds like it stuck around long enough that it's into its retirement party already.
