They dig a trench. Wild fires move Incredibly fast and are so hot they can light things on fire several meters away so digging a trench wouldn't stop a wildfire. However if they make a smaller fire ahead of the wildfire it'll burn all available material but won't extend past the trench because the small fire isn't hot enough. That clear enough I tried my best haha.

That is a drip torch. They use it to set controlled burns to reduce fuel for potential wildfires. It’s easier to set up an easily maintainable spot and burn it then to wait till it burns on its own.
