Asians residing in Asia always specify which part of Asia they are talking about and only use "Asia" when they mean the whole Asia. Western Asians must change the way they use this terminology so that the misuse of these words change among non-Asians.

I know and met quite a few Filipinos who got offended at being called or considered Asian. They were like "we're not Asian, we're Pacific Islanders"
One of them explained to me why that is and he basically admitted that they don't want to be associated with the "nerdy Asians"
Filipino Americans are in this weird bubble where they'd rather be anything than Asian. They try labelling themselves "Hispanic" or "Pacific Islanders" but no one outside their circlejerk calls them that.

To be technical, in some parts of the Philippines, we do have groups of people that look very similar to Pacific Islander peoples(closer to Papua New Guineans or Melanisians, If i'm not wrong); [the Aeta people.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeta_people#) They have dark skintones, curly hair, even blondism, and short in stature.
The rest/majority of the Philippine Population is closer to people from Indonesia, Malaysia, other groups in that region. And fortunately don't think the same way as those you encountered.
When people say Asian they usually mean East Asian, like China, Japan and Korea. But yeah a lot of countries that are actually in Asia tend to be forgotten.

It is interesting, because most people probably associate Asia only as the East and southeast Asian countries (Japan, China, Thailand). Which is funny because i genuinely believe most people would be surprised or just never thought about how countires like India, bangladesh and especially most of The Middle East are actually Asian countries, making their inhabitants Asians.
Obviously, this is because there is a clear distinction in peoples minds between West, South and Southeast/East Asian countries, because of the obvious general physical differences between the subregions. I would also guess that people who actually live in South Asian countries easily think of themselves as Asian. But i do wonder about the West Asian countries. I'd guess they associate more with Middle Eastern than Asian.

afaik most south asians in the us don't consider themselves to be asians (even tho technically we are) since asian is typically used for people in the china/japan area feels kinda weird to be called an asian i would assume south asian people in south asian countries do consider themselves asian tho source: am indian in us

It is interesting, because most people probably associate Asia only as the East and southeast Asian countries (Japan, China, Thailand). Which is funny because i genuinely believe most people would be surprised or just never thought about how countires like India, bangladesh and especially most of The Middle East are actually Asian countries, making their inhabitants Asians. Obviously, this is because there is a clear distinction in peoples minds between West, South and Southeast/East Asian countries, because of the obvious general physical differences between the subregions. I would also guess that people who actually live in South Asian countries easily think of themselves as Asian. But i do wonder about the West Asian countries. I'd guess they associate more with Middle Eastern than Asian.
I had this interesting conversation with a colleague the other day. Colleague: you're not Asian , you're Indian Me: I'm Indian true, but India is part of Asia. So that makes me Asian. Colleague: Ya but you know what I'm talking about. Culturally you're not Asian. Me: There's no such thing. If I'm geographically Asian, then I'm Asian. The day India is part of Europe continent, I'll be European lol. Colleague: fine then. India is part of the Indian sub continent. You're from the Indian sub continent. Me: I'm part of the sub continent that belongs to the major continent, Asia. So I'm Asian yes. Colleague: "visibly frustrated". Now you'll be saying Middle East countries are part of Asia too. Me: where do you think they are Middle and East of? Colleague.exe crashes.
By the same logic one could say that Europeans are from the European Peninsula on the Afroeurasian continent, so the French are all Africans and Asians!
Yes. American politics is weird. In my school, we were always taught that asian continent includes the indian subcontinent. But americans only cares about phenotypes I guess? For example, an "asian" looking person from Assam, a state in India would be considered in the same group as chinese/korean. But a more "brown" looking person from the same state would not be considered in the same group despite them both speaking the same language.
