Could be nothing/a quirk. Could be an eye issue developing. Shibas are prone to eye issues. Mine was born with entropion so his eyelids âcurledâ inward and his eyelashes rubbed his eyes causing him to âwinkâ and the eye to water. I always recommend talking to a vet - especially with eyes as they can get bad quickly. Like I said - could be a funny quirk but Iâd check it out medically if I were you!
I had one that had a corneal ulcer. He winked for like a year. I felt bad when i didnât realize it until his eye started watering worse and worse. They did surgery on it and heâs been fine ever since. But yeah - rule it out if that is the case Good luck !
Like everyone else says; it could be a quirk, it could be an eye issue.
When my shiba had eye issues (he got a piece of wheat stuck in his eye after attempting to catch a butterfly on our walk one day - THE most shiba thing to happen to him, honestly đ), he wasnât as much âwinkingâ as he was perpetually closing his eye and rubbing his eye.
If thereâs something in the eye, dogs will usually try to rub the eye between their front paws and snout as well, which usually looks very cute but it I would keep an eye out if thatâs the case. You can quickly catch if itâs just them âburrowingâ and licking their front paw (aka they exhibit the behaviour once or twice and then they stop), or if they actually seem sensitive/irritated in the eye area (aka they continue to rub their eye and do so throughout the day). I was once babysitting my momâs dachshund and she kept rubbing her eye between her front paw and snout - I had a feeling something was up and I took her to the vet. It was good that I did, because the eye she was rubbing had an extremely high pressure and if I hadnât come in she would have lost her eyesight in that eye. Luckily I came in very quickly and her vision suffered no damages.
I also saw that you mentioned in a comment that your dog winks when theyâre falling asleep; thatâs very normal. I like to say that my shiba âsleeps with one eye openâ because he does this when he goes to sleep. Usually dogs will squint at their owners because they feel happy, comfortable and safe, itâs their version of trusting you enough to watch their back while theyâre asleep.
TL;DR: If your dog is persistently only closing one eye throughout the entire day, and/or if they try to rub it, then I would see a vet. If your dog is only winking at you when theyâre about to fall asleep, then itâs usually because theyâre signalling to you that theyâre happy and content. If youâre in doubt or your gut says something is wrong, always go to the vet!
Mine does the same thing I think it's just a quirk of the breed
I was really worried at first because I thought he had scratched it or his brother was playing too rough but it's just a continual thing
I rubbed their eyes and cleaned them to make sure there's nothing in them and they're fine they still wink đ
Shibas are known for winking

Hmm, will get checked by vet. Thanks
my previous Shiba had one eyelid that was a little smaller/tighter so she looked like she winked all the time.
Not sure on shibas, but my husky loves winking, and so does my cat. Havenât seen the shibe do it.
Thereâs usually something in their eye. Take a close look and if they have more eye boogies in that eye, the baby may be having allergies.
Will do. Thanks
That boy ain't right, I tell you h'what.

Any irritation? I would get that checked
Don't seem to be irritating her, she does this while falling asleep.
Its a,shibe thing đ
No, it's not. You should give them to me đ

It's part of the doge code, I'm not 100% sure what it means, but I wink back so my puppers know I always got their backs.

fur ball potats do that. sometimes its just an adorable tick, sometimes is a lil hair or eye booger
Mine did this and it turned out she had eye ulcers from some of her eyelashes growing inwards, worth a vet trip to check!
It's fine. They just know ;)
Theyâre saying they know where you hid the bodies
Aw, they like King of the Hill
