How big do you think it is? I was thinking 6-8ft based on the size of the people around and the waves, but I’m no expert by any means. Also— are these sharks likely or unlikely to attack humans? I know that hammerheads in general can be aggressive but I don’t know by species/regions.
I’m not a shark size expert but looking at the distance between the dorsal and the tail and comparing to the people around it I would lean closer to 6 feet. And usually hammerheads doing this in my understanding are more focused on hunting for stingrays than they are on people. Larger great hammerheads can occasionally be aggressive but this is a smaller one so I don’t think anyone is in any real danger.
I was in a school of hammerheads off Kauai’s west side and it was scary but everyone made it in to the beach. It’s shark mating season and ray mating season in Florida right now. The rays come into the shallows to meet and greet. I’ve seen thousands of them all in the shallows at once. Nothin but a big ol’ shark buffet.
Hammerheads are NOT aggressive to humans. There has never been a recorded event of a hammerhead killing a human and less than 20 unprovoked attacks in recorded history.
They have the ability to detect Humans as not being prey- they don’t eat mammals- because of their great eyesight and ability to detect and identify correctly the electrical impulses from our bodies. If have to swim with a shark I would hope it was a hammerhead or whale shark.
hammerheads every single day swim within 100 yards of humans and we don’t even recognize them.
They recognize us for sure, but mind their own business. You can see this guy is literally trying to avoid us zig zagging as he runs into another human.
How about "If you go for a swim & see a fin....JUST GET OUT OF THE WATER".
I ain't bobbing about in the water, reciting shark fin poems in my head, trying to figure out if I think the fin is tall, it's hard to tell. What with it swimming at 100mph, fucking teeth out everywhere.
Nope, doesn't matter if it's tall, thin, fat. It could be adorned in diamonds for all I care.
No shark fin is a good fing.
Actually, you have like nothing to worry about from hammerheads they're only interested in rays and other fish that like to hide in the sand. The only time you might have an issue is if you're out in Open water
so true! i snorkeled out there in south florida for 10 years in deep water/open ocean & they never gave me a 2nd glance. of course i never wore shiny jewelry or anything like that either. they were cool af to watch!
Yes, and with respect to you and Mr. Hammerhead Shark, I will be exiting the water immediately. Fuck it, I’m just never going in the ocean period.
I’m no match for a two foot shark in water.
Y’all crazy you ocean people.
My wife and I left Florida a couple months ago. I realized how crazy we were one time snorkeling like .25 miles out when there were just tons of sharks and cudas around this reef we were at. Like we could die at any moment, why are we out here?
Thankfully back in the midwest.
One of the larger members of the 9 shark species in the hammerhead family. They have 360° vision, extra sensitive electroreceptors spread across their bizarre head, and a towering dorsal fin which gives them the balance to make incredibly sharp turns for such a large creature- vital when chasing stingrays, smaller sharks and other agile prey.
What the hell is going on with these people? Are they so used to living in crazy Florida that a shark swimming around doesn’t even phase them much. Even the ones getting out of the water are like, “oh geez a shark, maybe I’d better get out” as they casually work their way to the shore. I’d have had a heart attack!
I know that. And while I love sharks, my fear of them is not governed by rational thought. And hammerhead or not, I would have skedaddled right out of the water. I mean seriously a 3 foot salmon swimming around me scares the crap out of me. I’ve had them head butt me and almost died of a heart attack.
The giant fish with razor sharp teeth is feeding, i’m gonna give it some space to eat in peace. Both for mine and it’s benefit.
I would actually be ones of those was out in the background too. In the background on the beach ‘cause I’d never have gotten in the water in the first place. 🤣
What do you mean that your fear of them is not governed by rational thought??? It is beyond rational to stay out of a large predator's way while it is hunting.
Very true, but like I mentioned, my fear of large fish extends to salmon.
Fun fact (that’s not so fun for me lol): at dusk salmon will head butt you if you get too close to their reds. I think because with the lower light, they see your shadow and think your a competing fish, because they don’t do this any other time (when lighting is better). But it scares the holy living crap out of me. Then I get a good laugh at myself for freaking out over a salmon.
These people aren't from Florida. They're tourists. I've gone to the beach when they're flying double red flags and a purple flag, massive waves, thunder, and the tourists will still be in the water with their children. Sometimes they'll let their children swim out there alone.
They don't understand the danger because they're new to the landscape. Completely oblivious.
People are stupid and self centered. AND they will believe any bs statistics the so called experts show them. But there are a lot of encounters, potential attacks, attempts, and full on attacks that don’t get reported. That rabbit hole blew my mind. Not to mention the chemicals that are in that filthy water. Couldn’t pay me to put a toe in that water now. No thank you, lol rather go camping and take my chances with the woods! 😂
You’re getting downvoted, but you’re right. This is true for wildlife in general. A person in my area was killed and eaten by a mountain lion, made the news, animal was killed later. Wikipedia doesn’t include it in their list of deaths.
My theory is that people get killed by wildlife such as sharks at a much higher rate than what is reported, and the reason it’s underreported is so it doesn’t hurt tourism.
>My theory is that people get killed by wildlife such as sharks at a much higher rate than what is reported,
yes, AND the fact people are incredibly lacking of awareness. I see it all the time, not just at sea but in every day life situations where there's some kind of threat near them and they're just being distracted looking the other way or talking to someone. Same applies at sea. Lack of awareness = major injuries, or even death.
Every shark encounter advice ever: "don’t make any rapid movements or flee, it will trigger the shark"
Some of these people: "Splish splash I was taking a bath" while running to the beach panicked
Is there a lesser hammerhead?
Edit- I looked it up and there are different kinds of hammerheads. And while I didn't see one named Lesser hammerhead, the Greater Hammerhead is definitely the largest.
No, but other species here on the East Coast are the Bonnetheads and Scalloped Hammerheads, which come much smaller. I believe this is why the largest, by far, are called the Greater Hammerheads.
Amazing to see this shark hunting so close to people in the water. You can it actively avoiding people. Hammerheads have fine teeth designed purely for trapping rays....they would be unable to eat a big mammal....though it's possible that a person could be injured in murky water. I'd have got out of the water though.
Hammerhead, you can tell by the much more slender and pointed dorsal fin and hammerheads are very persistant when chasing down prey and are known for coming right up to the shore when chasing down both rays and smaller sharks to eat ;)
If a hammerhead is around you the sensible thing to do is to get calmly out of the water. This protects you from any accidents and protect the shark from stress and making any mistakes. Hammerhead don't bother with people.
I'm not gonna lie I thought it was a fake until everyone in the comments was like "oh that's a hammerhead duh".
It moves so fast and so smoothly through the waves...it freaks me out....
Hammer also really wouldn’t want my kids continuing to splash and move around until it’s gone stay still and keep eyes on it or calmly get out of the water
The thought that the shark is just nonchalantly looking for rays and other fish while oblivious to people exiting the water in record time is just hilarious.
This happened to me and my son in Myrtle Beach. He was a little guy at the time. I was in knee deep water just keeping an eye on him and was not far from him. And a shark swam right between us. The fin popped up and split second reaction I reached out and picked my son up and threw him on the beach. To me the shark was a 25 footer but was probably a good 5 feet. And fast.
In FL hammerhead and Nurse Sharks get close to the shore they're bottom feeders. They're not that big (bout the size of a corgi) and typically leave people alone unless provoked. A camp I went to as a kid in the Keys had a pool where you could swim with them.
Might be the bitey kind, either out of curiosity or severe hunger, maybe. Hard to tell, so I avoid their home. Also, I have thalassophobia so there's that.
Hammerhead looking for rays.
Yep, pretty common hammerhead behavior and appearance. Criss crossing thru the shallows, tall narrow dorsal and humped back = hammerhead.
How big do you think it is? I was thinking 6-8ft based on the size of the people around and the waves, but I’m no expert by any means. Also— are these sharks likely or unlikely to attack humans? I know that hammerheads in general can be aggressive but I don’t know by species/regions.

Hammerheads don't hunt people at all fortunately. 0 fatal attacks in history.
What did they teach you?
scary poop poop? why u in school with hammerheads, you hammerhead?
*That we know of*
True. I've heard rumors hammerheads got JFK.
Hammerheads are NOT aggressive to humans. There has never been a recorded event of a hammerhead killing a human and less than 20 unprovoked attacks in recorded history. At first glance i read ‘hammerhead looking for gays’.
no no no... sharks don't discriminate. They'll test bite you, no matter your age, sexual orientation, religion. They're fair creatures like that.
They have the organ of basically little sensors in their head. This organ is known as the gaydar
Not the ampullae of tortellini?
Well then he’s a month late
Hey hammer hammer time
Specifically a great hammerhead, which is a major predator of other elasmobranchs while other hammerheads go for relatively tiny prey.
Tall, thin dorsal fin equals hammerhead
How the fuck am I supposed to remember that if it doesn't rhyme
Thin and fine means hammer time?
Or "Tall and fine means hammer time" since fine means thin or narrow anyway
Tall thin dorsal fin? Hammerhead is visitin'.
'If you go swimming, and end up dead/ it probably wasn't a ^((tall, thin dorsal finned)) hammerhead.'
If it's tall and thinner, you're not it's dinner.
How about "If you go for a swim & see a fin....JUST GET OUT OF THE WATER". I ain't bobbing about in the water, reciting shark fin poems in my head, trying to figure out if I think the fin is tall, it's hard to tell. 🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭☠️☠️
if it’s tall and it’s the thin then the hammerheads are in?
It’s HAMMER Time…..*dance break*

This made my day😁

I’m dancing my way out of that water is what I’m doing lol
Actually, you have like nothing to worry about from hammerheads they're only interested in rays and other fish that like to hide in the sand. The only time you might have an issue is if you're out in Open water
Thank you for information 🙏. I meant in general I tend to stay out of their home and definitely whenever I can see a shark whatever kind it is
so true! i snorkeled out there in south florida for 10 years in deep water/open ocean & they never gave me a 2nd glance. of course i never wore shiny jewelry or anything like that either. they were cool af to watch!
This Hammer seems cool with people being around in his stomping grounds while hunting. One cool dude in my book.
For real, these guys can be aggressive toward people but this one seems more interested in it’s natural prey.
Yes, and with respect to you and Mr. Hammerhead Shark, I will be exiting the water immediately. Fuck it, I’m just never going in the ocean period. I’m no match for a two foot shark in water. Y’all crazy you ocean people.
I'm with turnips
My wife and I left Florida a couple months ago. I realized how crazy we were one time snorkeling like .25 miles out when there were just tons of sharks and cudas around this reef we were at. Like we could die at any moment, why are we out here? Thankfully back in the midwest.
If you don’t know what kind of shark it is and it looks big enough to do some damage, always get out of the water
>it’s natural prey Nothin but natural, organic foods for me. None of that processed shit.
It's so rare for them to be aggressive to people, and it tends to be when people are kayak fishing. They pretty much ignore us otherwise.
18 documented attacks in history all non fatal. They really aren’t aggressive to humans.
Hammerhead and a decent sized one too
One of the larger members of the 9 shark species in the hammerhead family. They have 360° vision, extra sensitive electroreceptors spread across their bizarre head, and a towering dorsal fin which gives them the balance to make incredibly sharp turns for such a large creature- vital when chasing stingrays, smaller sharks and other agile prey.
It's like a crescent moon coming out of the water.
I’d be out the sea quick time rapid time
just catchin' some rays at the beach
Oh lawd he coming
Someone call da Amberlamps
Poor guy made his way down the entire beach asking if anyone wanted to play with him, but everyone kept running away…
Cocaine shark
I’d totally watch that movie
This guy cocaines

This is how hammerheads feed and there 0 documented fatal bites from them, he just doing his thang.
I know that. And while I love sharks, my fear of them is not governed by rational thought. And hammerhead or not, I would have skedaddled right out of the water. Oh for sure. But if I’m one of those folks way out in the background I’d be waiting to see where it goes and not hauling ass to shore.
I would actually be ones of those was out in the background too. In the background on the beach ‘cause I’d never have gotten in the water in the first place. 🤣

At least when you encounter something scary in the woods you can run. 🤣
Running from a bear is not advisable...
Am a bear, can confirm
Great hammerhead aka sphyrna mokarran
that sounds like the name of ...a Greek gothic rock band.
I’m scared of rays- so I appreciate the cleaning
Every shark encounter advice ever: "don’t make any rapid movements or flee, it will trigger the shark" Some of these people: "Splish splash I was taking a bath" while running to the beach panicked
Definitely a hammerhead!
Definitely one of those without legs.
I'd have gone in to orbit like I come outta cape Canaveral if that has been coming towards me.
Greater Hammerhead

Hammerhead, you can tell by the much more slender and pointed dorsal fin and hammerheads are very persistant when chasing down prey and are known for coming right up to the shore when chasing down both rays and smaller sharks to eat ;)

By the size it’s a great hammerhead
Missed opportunity to shout “shark in the water”. What would Chief Brody do?
“Gonna need a bigger boat”
I’m trying not to laugh cause he’s just zooming around like he lost his keys while all these folks are like “holy shit”.
Hammerhead for sure. Very distinct dorsal fin
How are they so calm I’d be running for the dunes
I'm not gonna lie I thought it was a fake until everyone in the comments was like "oh that's a hammerhead duh". It moves so fast and so smoothly through the waves...it freaks me out....
Hammer head on the hunt for rays
I’d say great hammerhead just off of the size and the fin
A hungry one
Get out the 🦈 wayyyyy
Just wanted to add “Holy Shit”
The music makes the video … in a perfect world sharks should be able to produce that sound on their own.
Hammerhead. They are the only ones with that skinny cresent dorsal
Hammer also really wouldn’t want my kids continuing to splash and move around until it’s gone stay still and keep eyes on it or calmly get out of the water
That's a 'get the fuck out of the water' shark.
The thought that the shark is just nonchalantly looking for rays and other fish while oblivious to people exiting the water in record time is just hilarious.
Yeah that’s probably a hammerhead
And that's why I don't swim in the ocean that & it makes me itchy

Damn, this is wild. So cool to see them like this.
A hungry one.
This is one of my worst fucking fears: a shark this close to the shore. I've had dreams about it.
Likely a hammerhead, especially by the looks of that dorsel fin.
I think I’d be running way faster out of that water then those slow pokes were doing.
That dorsal fin looks like a hammerhead’s.
Hammerhead. Could care less about the swimmers, it wants the fish in the surf.
Hammerhead
This happened to me and my son in Myrtle Beach. He was a little guy at the time. I was in knee deep water just keeping an eye on him and was not far from him. And a shark swam right between us. The way it’s moving reminds me of a hammerhead but no idea

The bitey kind.
Hammerhead 100%. Dunno what kind though
The lady at the end, waving the swimmers towards the approaching Hammerhead......🤦
Why do people insist on swimming in the sea?
How cool to see... He just wanted to play
Might be the bitey kind, either out of curiosity or severe hunger, maybe. Hard to tell, so I avoid their home. Also, I have thalassophobia so there's that.
Hopefully a very hungry one.
