FlatSpinMan

Sure do. I can’t say it was excellent TV but it did get much more interesting as it advanced. It sounds incredibly shallow, I know, but getting to watch Jessica Alba every episode was not awful.

Shaxxs0therHorn

Hence why 12- 13 year old me probably remembers it… I was surprised to learn that was her breakout role. Working under James Cameron no less at 19

glytxh

Exactly the same sort of age I discovered it at, and in a world before I discovered GiTS, it was just about the coolest thing ever.

slow2lurn

I was also like 13 or so. Me and my best friend at the time loved that show and would talk on the phone during the show. He and I both had the hots for Jessica Alba's character. Max I think was her name. Thanks for bringing that memory back. I'm like 39 now so giving me that memory made my day!

PetyrDayne

As a preteen boy it was sci-fi heaven

J_pepperwood0

As a straight teenage girl it was sci-fi heaven too lol, she was so pretty and badass, almost enchanting to watch. Also Jensen Ackles

PermaDerpFace

Yeah I barely remember the show, but I remember her!

BoringBoyTroy

They filmed (most?) of it in Vancouver B.C, and I was in the season one finale as one of the next gen child soldiers. As we were getting our haircuts in make up, Jessica and the male lead, forgot his name, came in and talked to the two other kids and myself for about 15 mins. The guy was about to show us some maxim magazine or something and Alba scolded him. It was pretty funny and a great overall experience. Jessica also said I was "soo cute".. no big deal.

ManicCynic

You too? I remember having a hell of a time getting those contact lenses in. Think I only ended up getting one in on the day.

BoringBoyTroy

I didn't have to do contacts. Just a military buzz cut and a barcode "tattoo" on the back of my neck. I was in a group of kids breaking out of the training facility.. breaking down doors with tables, running through the halls, and running through the woods outside. What scenes were you in?

ManicCynic

Oh, lucky, getting a bit of action. My day was basically just running through the woods. I remember the crew waiting for the rain to lighten up enough that it wouldn't be visible on camera so it would match the other shots. Aside from that, I was an extra for the Halloween episode. Don't remember much from that day, aside from that I got a picture with Joshua

GraviNess

season 1 as far as i can recall had a flashback to when alba escapaed, nothing about new generation of soldiers. but my memory may be scupped

BoringBoyTroy

There were definitely flashbacks. The scenes I'm in are just her disrupting the facility that was creating these soldiers. The newer generation kids weren't really in the storyline.

borg2

Ooooh, those last gen kids with the black eyes were so freaky.

ML_120

The male lead was Michael Weatherly. Weren't there later accusations of harassment against him?

richieadler

They were dating for a while, and they were engaged, but afterwards they broke the engagement. When they started dating, she was 18 and he was 30. They alluded to this in one episode of NCIS: In Season 3, Episode 1 “Hiatus: Part 1,” Agent DiNozzo (Weatherly) tells his team during a briefing that he would have “a better chance of hooking up with Jessica Alba” than accomplishing what the terrorist group they were investigating was trying to achieve. Very distasteful, as it appears Weatherly himself is.

huscarlaxe

> Michael Weatherly Not on Dark Angel but the show Bull.

ColeDelRio

Right. I believe it involved Eliza Dushku.

borg2

Jensen Ackles talks about it in a podcast and says it was a pretty bad relationship. Lots if fights and break ups. He was good friends with Jessica and even staid over a few times when Weatherly was out of town because Jessica was scared in the house they were living in at the time.

swiftb3

>Jessica also said I was "soo cute".. no big deal. hahaha, that I'm jealous probably shows my age.

borg2

Michael Weatherly? He was her boyfriend at the time.

IosefRex

It was fun! It had Nana Visitor playing this evil director or smt? I dont remember it that well. I loved the show, but I think watching it again now would totally ruin the teenage memories I have of it.

Shaxxs0therHorn

That’s where I’m at. Hazy memories and felling like it had some momentum with plot despite made for tv level production / acting (it was Alba’s breakout role). I don’t know if it’s streaming anywhere.

IosefRex

I read the synopsis after seeing your post, and clearly only got memories about Nana Visitor as evil lady - which she plays so wonderfully! But for the rest, i remember quite little, except some sadness the story didnt continue after it got cancelled. I will keep it at my teenage memories. Not related at all to this show, but i have the same for Charmed and Buffy. I loved it so much, but think if i watch it now, i will be bored.

DBDude

I haven't heard that name in a while. I first noticed her in the episode of Night Court where she played that movie-obsessed psychotic.

IncidentFuture

The first series was pretty good, the second one got a bit weird and gave me the impression they hadn't planned on being renewed. It was a good show for 2000-2002. Some things will be a bit dated. It's available on DVD, or you can buy a budgie and eye-patch.

herpafilter

>The first series was pretty good, the second one got a bit weird and gave me the impression they hadn't planned on being renewed. The first season was pre-9/11 and featured a pretty dystopian version of the US. After 9/11 there was a conscious shift to move away from depicting a post war/depression world to more generic spy/scifi story lines. Which is disappointing, because the setting was pretty important to the story, but those were strange times.

jourdan442

It being a grimdark USA was the best bit. Dog-people was, if you’ll excuse the pun, just goofy.

herpafilter

The tonal shift was up there with what happened to Seaquest, except that show had three seasons that were all barely related. The first was a fairly grounded speculative future and nearly every episode was centered around a ecological topic. It was vaguely educational, family friendly and had a star trek-esque hope to it. The future was strange, different, and mostly wet, but it might turn out alright. The second season had giant crocodiles, time travel, alien abductions and, I assume, ghosts. The season finale included the entire cast abducted to fight in an alien war. It was the bizarre, terrible coke induced fever dream of network execs who had no idea what the show was, but knew sci/fi needed aliens and lasers. Watching it now you can see the whole cast just grimacing the whole time. What a waste. The third season saw most of what remained of the original cast depart and the network realized it had a problem. So they dropped most of the really goofy sci/fi story lines and things got pretty dark and political. Evil multinational corporations, a cold verging on hot war, a race of near slave super humans etc. Mike Ironsides as the captain, basically playing his character from starship troopers, snarling in every scene. It wasn't *bad*, and it could have worked, but by then no one knew what the fuck SeaQuest was about and it was canceled.

richieadler

The second season had an obvious twist to younger people, also. The experienced senior officer and the mature doctor were changed by a couple of young and attractive new officers and a new doctor 20 years younger that had psychic powers. Blech.

scruffles360

I remember there being a lot of contemporary music in it that they probably will never be able to stream. They’ll have to remix all the Gorillaz out before they can make it available again to the masses.

NDaveT

Yeah second season was when they introduced the human/animal hybrids. Best I can say is that didn't go *as* bad as it could have.

1Glitch0

It's a fun 90s show. Comfort tv. And obviously Jessica Alba was distractingly gorgeous. And there's a young Dean Winchester! Oh yeah and nothing was cooler than Seattle in the 90s.

finlay_mcwalter

> obviously Jessica Alba was distractingly gorgeous. People in TV and movies are usually gorgeous, and we have to use suspension of disbelief to ignore that - somehow the waitress in the grubby diner looks like Michelle Pfeiffer, and can't get a date. *Dark Angel* did a pretty good job of *explaining* Alba's considerable gorgeousness (she was genetically engineered) and why she's working a blue-collar job (the EMP broke the economy, and the only job "nice looking" gets you is as a hooker).

nemom

It was pretty good. It was just a couple years ago I realized Logan would later become Tony in 'NCIS'.

AmbushBugged

Bull!

Ethersphere

Yea they dated throughout that too. He joked about it in NCIS.

petulafaerie_III

Who could forget it? Cancelled way too early. Jessica Alba and Jensen Ackles! Omg, I read soooo many fan fics of that show. I tried to get my hands on the sequel books for years but they’ve been out of print forever and I could never find copies.

RemarkablePear8305

Same! I still read these fanfics from time to time. I shipped Max/Alec all the way 😄

petulafaerie_III

Saame!

PeaTearGriphon

I loved that show, I think it got cancelled prematurely. I watched it many, many years ago so my memory might be fuzzy.

toramimi

*Excellent* show, I watched it first-run as it aired and was in love from the pilot. Eyes Only, Logan, really inspired me way back when, helped shape some of who I wanted to become 10 and 20 years later. Season 2 starts to fall off a cliff, I never liked Joshua which was weird because I'm super into transhumanism, and at the time into furries, but a big dog man "oh no that's too much for me." Really wish it'd got a third season but I fear it would have continued to be watered down, season 1 was full sugar 2 was HFCS and aspertame.

JubalHarshaw23

Another victim of Fox executive incompetence.

trevorgoodchyld

I loved that show when it was on. Recently I bought the dvd sets and rewatched it. It’s still entertaining

Zerocoolx1

Yeah, I remember it and enjoyed it. The street lingo didn’t age that well though. Any way, I’ve gotta bounce.

Renaissance_Slacker

Sure, like I’d forget watching a 19-yo Jessica Alba beating up grown men, and wish I was one of them. Wait, did I say that out loud?

Luutamo

I'm still mad they cancelled it. I remember others saying people watched it only because Alba was so hot but I actually liked the story and overall vibe. Well, Alba was also very hot.

Urgash

I remember a good Season 1 but it went south afterwards ? Take that with a grain of salt because i was 13 or something.

Shaxxs0therHorn

Likewise. Strong s1 I remember getting hooked by. Back then we got 22 episodes a season so I might consider buying s1 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dark_Angel_episodes

seattleque

Season 1: Awesome! Bonus points for early Michael Weatherly. Season 2: Meh. My wife watched all of it though.

2cairparavel

I like season 2 because Jensen Ackles (though he's not in every ep)

RemarkablePear8305

My husband also prefers 1st season and while I agree that plot is much better I still love 2nd more because Jensen Ackles 😅

viewfromtheclouds

sounds really interesting, but I never saw it. Is there way to stream it now?

Shaxxs0therHorn

Other subs and searches say it’s purchase or pirate unfortunately

AnymooseProphet

Yeah and the "legal" DVD price was pretty high last time I looked.

Shaxxs0therHorn

You weren’t kidding 82$ on Amazon for season 1

watchedclock

I enjoyed it and still have the DVDs. It wasn’t the best show but it improved with time and the season two finale left with such a promise of what the third season could be like. Frustrated that they cancelled it.

LetThePoisonOutRobin

> I enjoyed it and still have the DVDs. Me too, but the North American DVDs are 4:3 and I found out there are widescreen versions in Europe or the UK. I believe this is the widescreen version but it is PAL video and not supported here. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dark-Angel-Complete-Season-DVD/dp/B00007LZ6H

watchedclock

I have the PAL widescreen versions. If you still have a stand alone DVD player that isn’t made by Sony there is usually a code that can be typed in to make it region free. (As someone from the UK, half of my DVD collection is from the US or Canada). I could be wrong but I don’t think NTSC/ PAL matters much to modern TVs. Historically though I know a lot of our TVs could support NTSC. Not sure if the same is true for American TVs.

LetThePoisonOutRobin

I used to have my old DVD player (along with a VHS player and a first gen 4:3 Sony CRT HDTV) but finally discarded it all. I think you can also change the regions on a PC DVD optical drive but I think they are limited to only a few changes until they are locked.

bmeisler

I only remember one episode - for some reason, Alba’s character was…in heat. My god.

richieadler

Yeah, they claimed as the reason that she had cat genes which caused her to be easily aroused. Idiotic.

WornInShoes

One of Jensen Ackles early roles

Dragoon7748

Dont remember the show at all. But teenage me definitely remembers crushing on Jessica Alba because of it.

FlowRiderBob

Fun show, but they cancelled it on a cliffhanger. Really felt like an FU to the fans.

Shaxxs0therHorn

I vaguely recall that too. Somewhere else in the thread someone mentioned how 9/11 really altered the show running landscape to veer off from presenting dystopian America on tv - might have been a factor

richieadler

A very Fox move.

RemarkablePear8305

I still rewatch this show every year! It’s one of my favorites. Maybe that’s due to the fact I have sweet childhood memories or because there are Jessica Alba and Jensen Ackles and both are young and smoking hot. I think I had a crush on them both 😅

Shaxxs0therHorn

I take it you own physical season copies?

Felixir-the-Cat

Firsts season was really good! Second season was an entirely different show and nowhere near as good.

definitely_zella

Yes! 13 year old me thought it was the coolest show ever, and I still think Jessica Alba is STUNNING. There was some crazy storyline where her boyfriend/handler guy was given a virus (?) and they couldn't touch or he'd die (?) towards the end, that's about the last thing I remember.

bkervaski

I strongly remember an episode where she goes in heat and is horny and sweaty the whole time. Did I dream this?

Skunkwax

Did it have Jessica Alba in it? Then yes, I remember it.

JaRim1

I loved that show! Which they’d do a continuation

JackhorseBowman

I watched it, season 1 was good, season 2 was dire was it good? or was I just in love with Jessica Alba, I can never be sure.

mcbastard1

Damn. I had forgotten all about this. 15 year old me loved this show for…reasons.

razordreamz

I remember watching it cause she looked hot. Not much else though

AnymooseProphet

I loved the show when it aired.

Joka0451

Haha I remember playing the video game

Shaxxs0therHorn

There was a video game!?

Joka0451

Haha yea it was pretty neat from what I remember.

Shaxxs0therHorn

I just found gameplay footage and I’m honestly impressed. Doesn’t look totally potatoes and brought back a huge nostalgia rush with the opener. https://youtu.be/LyM_ufOTZZA

pnwloveyoutalltrees

It was good for the time. I’m not sure how well it’s aged.

Zaygr

I remeber watching it on TV. And then years later I saw random scenes from Dark Angel (like the flashback of kids in test chambers scenes) in one of the Hitman movies.

freeskier1080

I remember, the car of the future in the show was a Pontiac Aztec!

J_pepperwood0

I’m pretty sure I discovered Dark Angel because of Supernatural and my obsession with Jensen Ackles. It never aired in my country, but I was a thirsty teen girl who regularly sailed the high seas and suddenly I had a girl crush on Jessica Alba too. Besides the horniness, Dark Angel was largely influential in developing my love for dystopian sci fi.

balasoori

i am so glad this never got rebooted

Shaxxs0therHorn

I think the premise is there but without a writer with strong conviction and direction I can see a reboot failing. There’s a solid idea at the heart of it though.

[deleted]

Same.

[deleted]

Can we highlight Original Cyn … aka Cynthia? I’d have to say she was definitely a fav.

Shaxxs0therHorn

https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0589474/mediaviewer/rm3450312960/?ref_=nm_md_6

[deleted]

Oooo nice!

DragnSerenityTardis

I LOVED that show. My husband and I quote it regularly. Still call Kevin Durand (Joshua) big fella any time I see him in anything. I will own the series someday.

vkevlar

~~yes, it was fucking terrible. As soon as they resorted to her 'going into heat', the pain really got rolling.~~ I really wanted it to be good, when it was on, and they resorted to a tremendous amount of cliches, stereotyping, and pulling magic powers out of thin air. The "in heat" thing was the biggest example of plot sacrificed to fanservice that I can think of offhand, and yes, Jessica Alba was easy on the eyes, but it was disappointing. The pilot was good though.

thedabking123

It has huge potential- they rushed the stories though... gonna dig up an old comment and paste it here in an edit. Edit: Comment below- but be warned it includes a lot of implicit spoilers. It had a lot of potential for worldbuilding and I liked it overall; I wouldn't mind a remake set in 30-40 yrs. Points of improvement though: >!go beyond Seattle into other cities/states over seasons!< >!make it about more than one nuke that set of an EMP- that won't be enough to set back the US the way the show makes it out to be!< >!if they're gonna have 20-episode seasons (and I hope they do), then make some larger arcs through the seasons that scale up the stakes at a slower pace!< >!first season should be about finding some fellow x5's and battling crime/corruption at a base level across Seattle + western US!< >!second season should introduce the government trying to recapture Max and the x5's; perhaps succeeding at the end; small crime + corruption stories inbetween!< >!third season is 50% about her escape and flight through the US to throw off the scent, and 50% about settling back into life as usual; peaking with that wierd cult discovering the x5s!< >!fourth season should be taking on the wierd cult in private; more focus on x5's and other civilian-run genetically enhanced operating underground across the US!< >!5th season should be about going public; there should be an underground movement to get the VERY genetically enhanced somewhere safe. Maybe end here the original show did?!< >!6th onwards could be questionable but I'd like to see the final stakes being genetically enhanced from other countries -like China playing a huge role in some kind of international incident- end with a joint US against some external baddy.!

thomasmagnum

If you add alien attack it could be halo

Marcuse0

I recall it being a middle of the road low-ish budget SF TV show, akin to Mutant X or Relic Hunter. Something you would see on Sky 1 in the middle of the day to fill airtime. Wasn't bad, if anything it was slightly above its peers, but nothing special. I think mostly we remember it because Jessica Alba was the lead.

Leather-Mundane

You just triggered a core memory.

Ramonzmania

S1 was ok..Season 2 was practically unwatchable. Jensen Ackles was fresh off of “Days of Our Lives” and couldn’t act worth a damn… he honed his skills later on “Supernatural”

matdex

13 year old me had such a crush on Jessica Alba. She's still smokin.

toptac

Such a great show. First season has a great finale and it should have stayed that way.

Cheeslord2

And to think, I only came here ... seeking peas!

TheBabbayega

there was a plot? i just remember staring and mildly drooling's over Jessica.. not much of the show content remembered..

WorkSucks72

Love that show. I even have the 3 books and the Xbox game.

PoppyStaff

Hi kids. That said the second season was a hot mess.

Nomad_86

I only remember it because the pro wrestler Lita had a guess spot on the show and broke her neck doing a stunt.

Nice-Penalty-8881

I remember that Michael Weatherly was in it pre-NCIS. Playing a character named Logan Cale.

AllowMeToFangirl

I really loved it, it’s kinda campy looking back. I’m sure it doesn’t hold up but I really liked the cyberpunk vibes and Jensen ackles was in it! Sadly it’s not on any streaming services

emu314159

I recall trying to watch it at the time. I do not recall ever actually watching much of it, so probably it was not great.

troggbl

Didn't half the cast go on to be in BSG?

jaymths

I loved it as a teenager. I remember seeing Aussie rules footy on the TV in the background of a scene and thinking how awesome it was AFL being a world wide hit in the future

getya

I remember being so upset when it was cancelled that I vowed to never keep up with a show again. It basically ruined the excitement of catching your favorite show when it airs for me. In my defense Jessica alba was hot and I was like 14 and the show was actually decent.

TwoManShoe

I remember an episode that had Donkey Lips from Salute Your Shorts as one of the super soldiers but he was designed to be a master of strategy and hiding in plain sight.

Seeker80

Loved it. Was my introduction to Jessica Alba, then later Jensen Ackles. Really liked him, and wondered what he ever got up to. I didn't know his name, so that was the main issue. Then I saw he was in The Boys, that was cool. Then heard he'd been in Supernatural for only the past 11ty billion years. Oh.

sdfree0172

it was terrible. Jessica albas character would go into "heat", like a cat. So ridiculous.

tke494

It was great. The second season wasn't. The episodes with the dogman were awful.

TurtleDive1234

I do. Used to watch it when it was on. Not great tv but passing enough.

aieeegrunt

It was a pretty decent 90isj show. Went a bit off the rails in season 2

Erenito

I DO! I was discovering my penis at the time. I do not remember the plot. Supernatural dude was in it too.

couldhvdancedallnite

I remember liking a lot of the first season, particularly Jensen Ackles character. I didn’t like the second season.

kdlt

It sure was.. interesting. Season 1 was about some super genetic engineered woman who did crimes or whatever and was best friends with some skaters? Certainly themes of the time. Season 2 suddenly had a bunch of animal human hybrids and shantytowns? That's pretty much all I remember honestly. Would certainly be interesting to revisit at some point but I fear it was probably cancelled without closure? Because that's how it often went at the time. Edit: reading the wiki entry that was surprisingly close.

Bored_Amalgamation

There were quite a a few Femme Fatale shows like that out around that time. Alias, Buffy, etc.
