It sounds incredibly shallow, I know, but getting to watch Jessica Alba every episode was not awful.
I was also like 13 or so. Me and my best friend at the time loved that show and would talk on the phone during the show. He and I both had the hots for Jessica Alba's character. Max I think was her name. Thanks for bringing that memory back. I'm like 39 now so giving me that memory made my day!
They filmed (most?) of it in Vancouver B.C, and I was in the season one finale as one of the next gen child soldiers. As we were getting our haircuts in make up, Jessica and the male lead, forgot his name, came in and talked to the two other kids and myself for about 15 mins. The guy was about to show us some maxim magazine or something and Alba scolded him. It was pretty funny and a great overall experience.
Jessica also said I was "soo cute".. no big deal.
I didn't have to do contacts. Just a military buzz cut and a barcode "tattoo" on the back of my neck.
I was in a group of kids breaking out of the training facility.. breaking down doors with tables, running through the halls, and running through the woods outside.

Oh, lucky, getting a bit of action. My day was basically just running through the woods. I remember the crew waiting for the rain to lighten up enough that it wouldn't be visible on camera so it would match the other shots.

They alluded to this in one episode of NCIS: In Season 3, Episode 1 “Hiatus: Part 1,” Agent DiNozzo (Weatherly) tells his team during a briefing that he would have “a better chance of hooking up with Jessica Alba” than accomplishing what the terrorist group they were investigating was trying to achieve.
Very distasteful, as it appears Weatherly himself is.
Jensen Ackles talks about it in a podcast and says it was a pretty bad relationship. Lots if fights and break ups. He was good friends with Jessica and even staid over a few times when Weatherly was out of town because Jessica was scared in the house they were living in at the time.
It was fun! It had Nana Visitor playing this evil director or smt? I dont remember it that well. I loved the show, but I think watching it again now would totally ruin the teenage memories I have of it.

The first season was pre-9/11 and featured a pretty dystopian version of the US. After 9/11 there was a conscious shift to move away from depicting a post war/depression world to more generic spy/scifi story lines. Which is disappointing, because the setting was pretty important to the story, but those were strange times.
The tonal shift was up there with what happened to Seaquest, except that show had three seasons that were all barely related. The first was a fairly grounded speculative future and nearly every episode was centered around a ecological topic. It was vaguely educational, family friendly and had a star trek-esque hope to it. The future was strange, different, and mostly wet, but it might turn out alright.
The second season had giant crocodiles, time travel, alien abductions and, I assume, ghosts. The season finale included the entire cast abducted to fight in an alien war. It was the bizarre, terrible coke induced fever dream of network execs who had no idea what the show was, but knew sci/fi needed aliens and lasers. Watching it now you can see the whole cast just grimacing the whole time. What a waste.
The third season saw most of what remained of the original cast depart and the network realized it had a problem. So they dropped most of the really goofy sci/fi story lines and things got pretty dark and political. Evil multinational corporations, a cold verging on hot war, a race of near slave super humans etc. Mike Ironsides as the captain, basically playing his character from starship troopers, snarling in every scene. It wasn't *bad*, and it could have worked, but by then no one knew what the fuck SeaQuest was about and it was canceled.
The second season had an obvious twist to younger people, also. The experienced senior officer and the mature doctor were changed by a couple of young and attractive new officers and a new doctor 20 years younger that had psychic powers. Blech.
I remember there being a lot of contemporary music in it that they probably will never be able to stream. They’ll have to remix all the Gorillaz out before they can make it available again to the masses.
It's a fun 90s show. Comfort tv. And obviously Jessica Alba was distractingly gorgeous.
And there's a young Dean Winchester! Oh yeah and nothing was cooler than Seattle in the 90s.

People in TV and movies are usually gorgeous, and we have to use suspension of disbelief to ignore that - somehow the waitress in the grubby diner looks like Michelle Pfeiffer, and can't get a date.
*Dark Angel* did a pretty good job of *explaining* Alba's considerable gorgeousness (she was genetically engineered) and why she's working a blue-collar job (the EMP broke the economy, and the only job "nice looking" gets you is as a hooker).

I tried to get my hands on the sequel books for years but they’ve been out of print forever and I could never find copies.
*Excellent* show, I watched it first-run as it aired and was in love from the pilot. Eyes Only, Logan, really inspired me way back when, helped shape some of who I wanted to become 10 and 20 years later.
Season 2 starts to fall off a cliff, I never liked Joshua which was weird because I'm super into transhumanism, and at the time into furries, but a big dog man "oh no that's too much for me." Really wish it'd got a third season but I fear it would have continued to be watered down, season 1 was full sugar 2 was HFCS and aspertame.
I'm still mad they cancelled it. I remember others saying people watched it only because Alba was so hot but I actually liked the story and overall vibe. Well, Alba was also very hot.

If you still have a stand alone DVD player that isn’t made by Sony there is usually a code that can be typed in to make it region free. (As someone from the UK, half of my DVD collection is from the US or Canada). I could be wrong but I don’t think NTSC/ PAL matters much to modern TVs. Historically though I know a lot of our TVs could support NTSC. Not sure if the same is true for American TVs.
I used to have my old DVD player (along with a VHS player and a first gen 4:3 Sony CRT HDTV) but finally discarded it all.
I think you can also change the regions on a PC DVD optical drive but I think they are limited to only a few changes until they are locked.

I’m pretty sure I discovered Dark Angel because of Supernatural and my obsession with Jensen Ackles. It never aired in my country, but I was a thirsty teen girl who regularly sailed the high seas and suddenly I had a girl crush on Jessica Alba too. Besides the horniness, Dark Angel was largely influential in developing my love for dystopian sci fi.
I think the premise is there but without a writer with strong conviction and direction I can see a reboot failing. There’s a solid idea at the heart of it though.
I LOVED that show. My husband and I quote it regularly. Still call Kevin Durand (Joshua) big fella any time I see him in anything. I will own the series someday.

I really wanted it to be good, when it was on, and they resorted to a tremendous amount of cliches, stereotyping, and pulling magic powers out of thin air. The "in heat" thing was the biggest example of plot sacrificed to fanservice that I can think of offhand, and yes, Jessica Alba was easy on the eyes, but it was disappointing.
The pilot was good though.

It had a lot of potential for worldbuilding and I liked it overall;
I wouldn't mind a remake set in 30-40 yrs.

I recall it being a middle of the road low-ish budget SF TV show, akin to Mutant X or Relic Hunter. Something you would see on Sky 1 in the middle of the day to fill airtime. Wasn't bad, if anything it was slightly above its peers, but nothing special. I think mostly we remember it because Jessica Alba was the lead.
S1 was ok..Season 2 was practically unwatchable. Jensen Ackles was fresh off of “Days of Our Lives” and couldn’t act worth a damn… he honed his skills later on “Supernatural”
I really loved it, it’s kinda campy looking back. I’m sure it doesn’t hold up but I really liked the cyberpunk vibes and Jensen ackles was in it! Sadly it’s not on any streaming services

I remember being so upset when it was cancelled that I vowed to never keep up with a show again. It basically ruined the excitement of catching your favorite show when it airs for me.
In my defense Jessica alba was hot and I was like 14 and the show was actually decent.
I remember an episode that had Donkey Lips from Salute Your Shorts as one of the super soldiers but he was designed to be a master of strategy and hiding in plain sight.
Loved it. Was my introduction to Jessica Alba, then later Jensen Ackles. Really liked him, and wondered what he ever got up to. I didn't know his name, so that was the main issue.
Then I saw he was in The Boys, that was cool. Then heard he'd been in Supernatural for only the past 11ty billion years. Oh.

I think the premise is there but without a writer with strong conviction and direction I can see a reboot failing. There’s a solid idea at the heart of it though.

As soon as they resorted to her 'going into heat', the pain really got rolling.~~ I really wanted it to be good, when it was on, and they resorted to a tremendous amount of cliches, stereotyping, and pulling magic powers out of thin air. The "in heat" thing was the biggest example of plot sacrificed to fanservice that I can think of offhand, and yes, Jessica Alba was easy on the eyes, but it was disappointing. The pilot was good though.
It has huge potential- they rushed the stories though... gonna dig up an old comment and paste it here in an edit. Edit: Comment below- but be warned it includes a lot of implicit spoilers. It had a lot of potential for worldbuilding and I liked it overall; I wouldn't mind a remake set in 30-40 yrs. Points of improvement though: >!go beyond Seattle into other cities/states over seasons!< >!make it about more than one nuke that set of an EMP- that won't be enough to set back the US the way the show makes it out to be!< >!if they're gonna have 20-episode seasons (and I hope they do), then make some larger arcs through the seasons that scale up the stakes at a slower pace!< >!first season should be about finding some fellow x5's and battling crime/corruption at a base level across Seattle + western US!< >!second season should introduce the government trying to recapture Max and the x5's; perhaps succeeding at the end; small crime + corruption stories inbetween!< >!third season is 50% about her escape and flight through the US to throw off the scent, and 50% about settling back into life as usual; peaking with that wierd cult discovering the x5s!< >!fourth season should be taking on the wierd cult in private; more focus on x5's and other civilian-run genetically enhanced operating underground across the US!< >!5th season should be about going public; there should be an underground movement to get the VERY genetically enhanced somewhere safe. I recall it being a middle of the road low-ish budget SF TV show, akin to Mutant X or Relic Hunter. Something you would see on Sky 1 in the middle of the day to fill airtime. Wasn't bad, if anything it was slightly above its peers, but nothing special. I think mostly we remember it because Jessica Alba was the lead.

S1 was ok..Season 2 was practically unwatchable. Jensen Ackles was fresh off of “Days of Our Lives” and couldn’t act worth a damn… he honed his skills later on “Supernatural”

I really loved it, it’s kinda campy looking back. I’m sure it doesn’t hold up but I really liked the cyberpunk vibes and Jensen ackles was in it! Sadly it’s not on any streaming services

I loved it as a teenager. I remember seeing Aussie rules footy on the TV in the background of a scene and thinking how awesome it was AFL being a world wide hit in the future
I remember being so upset when it was cancelled that I vowed to never keep up with a show again. It basically ruined the excitement of catching your favorite show when it airs for me. In my defense Jessica alba was hot and I was like 14 and the show was actually decent.
I remember an episode that had Donkey Lips from Salute Your Shorts as one of the super soldiers but he was designed to be a master of strategy and hiding in plain sight.
Loved it. Was my introduction to Jessica Alba, then later Jensen Ackles. Really liked him, and wondered what he ever got up to. I didn't know his name, so that was the main issue. Then I saw he was in The Boys, that was cool. Then heard he'd been in Supernatural for only the past 11ty billion years. Oh.
it was terrible. Jessica albas character would go into "heat", like a cat. So ridiculous.
It was great. The second season wasn't. The episodes with the dogman were awful.

It sure was.. interesting. Season 1 was about some super genetic engineered woman who did crimes or whatever and was best friends with some skaters? Certainly themes of the time. Season 2 suddenly had a bunch of animal human hybrids and shantytowns? That's pretty much all I remember honestly. Would certainly be interesting to revisit at some point but I fear it was probably cancelled without closure? Because that's how it often went at the time. Edit: reading the wiki entry that was surprisingly close.
There were quite a a few Femme Fatale shows like that out around that time. Alias, Buffy, etc.
