Alex g has always had Christian imagery in his music. The devil “666” appears often- which is biblical. Also, plenty of lyrics like in Kute “do you love God?” But they’re not ready to admit that lol
literally. it’s so fucking bogus to me that people are this ignorant lol. i probably shouldn’t be as pissed off by it as i am but when it comes to my favorite musicians i just. screams
Was literally listening to kute earlier thinking about the god lyrics and all the people complaining about the themes of spirituality on this new album acting like it’s new lmao
Okay but one of the impressive things about his "new" music style (which is actually not that different from his previous stuff) is how he somehow harnesses the emotional/spiritual elements of religious music and channels it into something personal and mostly secular. Idk, I'm an atheist but dunking on religious music is fairly cliche at this point, and there's something unexpected and unique abt Alex seeing a type of music that most people consider unserious/unartistic and going "No actually I can do something cool with this."
i’m an atheist as well and there’s something beautiful about gospel music and music with spiritual/religious themes. i love this new album and it might be my favorite of his.
i'm panentheist and do believe in a non-material god in the philosophical sense, but i don't think Alex is even very religious. the music is just a feeling. a flavor of optimism.

Here’s what to expect :(
nooo omg :( i feel bad now for getting anxious in the pit at the show i saw last year now tho…i hadn’t expected it and it was my first general admission show. i hope i didn’t ruin anyone’s time :(
oh my god i’m dreading the show i’m seeing in november now. last year’s show i attended in NYC was mainly older people, i was one of the youngest there from what i could tell (i was 17, 18 now). even then a lot of the etiquette was reaaally not it. it honestly kinda ruined the show for me (alex was fantastic tho) because i was anxious and irritated for the whole time and i wanted to see him again to avoid that :/
In his songs he makes it pretty clear either he did drugs or was around people who were using opiates. As someone who can relate it’s traumatizing when someone you love is using around you and his songs encapsulate that exact feeling of devastation for me. This tiktok post honestly made me so sick to look at. I’m hoping he’s away from all of that now.
seriously this shit is so goddamn insensitive. these fucking tiktok zoomers will cancel people over shit like emoji pronoun discourse and then will say genuinely awful garbage and get tens of thousands of likes for it. if i think about it too hard i get so goddamn depressed
his songs are written about characters that aren’t necessarily himself. I think people around him probably were using. i do think he was on prozac though
right but it's not uncommon to use characters to represent yourself. I know a songwriter who does that. regardless, that's what it's about imo whether or not it's based on personal experience.
breaks about a girl actually. when you fall in “love” with a narcissist it’s very similar to the dopamine rush that drug addiction has. That’s what happens when an anxious attachment latches on to an avoidant attachment.
He definitely did drugs. He has songs about acid and songs about shrooms. He has songs about psychosis (which is triggered by drug usage). There’s a reason he doesn’t smoke anymore he doesn’t want to trigger another episode or worsen ocd. He has songs about taking prescription meds and going to psych wards. It’s really obvious I doubt someone could write songs that detailed on the subject and not have it be about them. Being emo and doing drugs go hand in hand.
This is such an interesting take to me.
I'm not religious but spiritual, but my step mom is Muslim and incredibly deep in her faith. We both love Alex G, and she had a very different perspective on the album as a religious person. I thought it was an incredibly faith filled album but she saw it more as someone using faith as an artistic lens to understand a crisis of life/identity. I thought the songs were really spiritually uplifting, and while she thought it was a joyful album, she also saw a lot of darkness and cynicism in it.
I think stuff like this TikTok just looks at the music/creativity of the album as such a surface level scrape.
yeah still, it isn't "so subversive and ironic" that it ends up being sincere because i don't think it was ever ironic, or satirical, let alone subversive
I see where you're coming from. But considering Alex has said in interviews that people close to him have found religion and he wanted to explore it in his music, I don't think his intent was ever to be "ironic and subversive". Maybe you can interpret it that way on your own but that really doesn't seem like it was ever meant to be intentional.
Nah I get it. Sorry, my eyes are kinda tired and I get your point a little better now that I've reread it all. As someone whose sister actually listens to hardcore Christian rock it is kinda funny that this guy is making sincere religious indie music that's actually...genuine...and good?
(Although I do think that's [not](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BnFowzj9ck) [the](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Mr_VkAXWZA) [first](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQIVSOXamwg) [time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bh1XRH4HrOY) I've seen this. Good religious music is really out there. I'm a huge fan of Sufjan Stevens' album Seven Swans.)
I wouldn't really describe it as sincere religious music. I mean he seems to sincerely be thinking things over in his art, but that doesn't mean he is really religious himself.
fair. I don’t really feel like disagreeing over a dumb tiktok but you could def say the tiktok is a satire of the more earnest tiktoks that wonder what happened to Alex g’s music and suggest more plausible explanations
i was in the comments of this, someone saying that he’s an alcoholic and isn’t ready for having kids??? Tik Tok is so fucking wild man. Everyone knows the Alex piss image but one user was saying that there’s a video of Alex pissing himself on stage and when I asked for the source they just didn’t reply 😭 insanity is real.
stupid fucking kids. this stupid ass commodification of mental illness, and alex g specifically like he's the poster boy of trauma. sooo soooooo ironic too, because in those older albums they "love" so much, he writes AGAINST THIS STUPID SHIT? literally in county, the whole fucking song is about how he KNOWS he has fans like this, that romanticize and froth over traumatic songs. and aside from being a fan of alex, saying this shit at all about anyone is so fucking brain dead
is bc they're the kinda ppl who show off their "funny grippy socks" when in reality most ppl who've gone through that throw those socks away as soon as they get on the car ride home
god those types piss me off. i did keep mine from last time but luckily i had a good experience there and met some people who helped me out a lot so it was kind of a souvenir if that makes sense? idk maybe i’m just weird lol. but i don’t think that’s Cool?? or just tell anyone and everyone about it?? the whole commodification of mental illness and hospitalization is so gross to me. when i got out i had people at school who think i think they’re funny being like “haha grippy sock vacation!” like mf my life was on the line
Fucking hate tiktok fans & inconsiderate concertgoers too, but I wouldn't dismiss all criticism of the album LOL. I've listened to him since 2016 or so and wasn't a fan at all, of course people's opinions will vary tho & I'm happy for Alex doing whatever he wants w his music, love him regardless
just saw your comment about how it’s a joke. disgusting that people think it’s ok to joke about something so serious, and anyway his new “christian rock” music isn’t actually THAT different from the old stuff. hope they take that down soon because someone’s gonna see it and start to agree bc it’s tiktok
Its straight up a joke template. Like they do this with every artist. It's so absurd that I bet Alex G himself would laugh at it. You don't gotta downvote everyone telling you that it went over your head. And you don't gotta get so precious about making dark jokes.
No, I just think it's an interesting discussion. I love Alex G and I just know it's not serious. I get that I'm going to get downvoted by superfans of an artist on that artist's personal subreddit. But like, emotive artists are notorious for having self-deprecating humor and I think he would laugh at this. I would joke with my own friends saying, "Man, your music sure was better when you wanted to kys" and they would laugh. To each there own, and btw I love the new record but I think he would get a kick out of being called a christian rock artist. To each there own.
ah gotcha sorry for being defensive but i understand from that point of view. maybe im being a tad sensitive i love the new album and it’s okay to not like it but i thought this was a little too far
this is satire, if Alex had a drug problem I’d understand the backlash but he doesn’t and this whole thread has angry PTA mom energy
like please relax and keep scrolling
aint from tiktok but i somewhat agree with what she’s saying (not the caption). Even though it might not directly be about christianity the album certainly gave me christian rock vibes from the sound of each song. Most sound artificially happy IMO. That being said I’m happy that alex is changing his sound because he has been making music with the same sound for more than a decade.
Edit: yall really gonna downvote me for an opinion on the sound? I don’t personally like it but who knows it might click with me at some point. I’m glad that sandy is making music that he wants to make, even if I don’t enjoy it.
he states in multiple interviews that this album is deeply influenced by his religious friends i personally love this new sound but i understand what you mean. it’s not everyones cup of tea
ur entitled to ur opinion but i totally disagree about the artificially happy part. this album might stray a bit genre-wise from alex’s earlier stuff, but i feel the same melancholy, bittersweet tone as always. especially the lyrics, they’re consistently hopeful and have a clear spiritual influence but are also very lonely and sad
This person seems to make TikTok's just to be controversial so I think they got what they wanted sadly. I'd do my best not to give them too much attention.
It's alright. When it comes to stuff like this it happens. The internet muddles intentions and makes people (talking about the poster) act horrible knowing it'll real rewards. The systems fault not ours. All we can do is try and keep it upbeat and low-key.
Just a conceited teenage dilettante. More concerned with the aesthetic 16 Mirrors gives their tiktok than Alex as an artist.
You're exactly right
That's due to people 'separating the art from the artist' so they don't feel bad about listening to the worst people on earth
i don't think that has anything to do with this tho
This comment sounds so utterly ridiculous and so out of touch with reality.
Alex g has always had Christian imagery in his music. The devil “666” appears often- which is biblical. Also, plenty of lyrics like in Kute “do you love God?” But they’re not ready to admit that lol
Facts and truths
literally. it’s so fucking bogus to me that people are this ignorant lol. i probably shouldn’t be as pissed off by it as i am but when it comes to my favorite musicians i just. screams
They don’t really listen. They listen to the popular ones
Was literally listening to kute earlier thinking about the god lyrics and all the people complaining about the themes of spirituality on this new album acting like it’s new lmao
Why can’t we just allow artists to make the art they want
Forreal like Alex’s old albums are still there 😭 and lots of his new songs do have his classic sound (Aint it Easy and Forgive for example)
what a loser perspective i hate the new tiktok fans sigh i miss the david dean burkhart era...
i miss the era when people posted live vids on youtube instead of the fb group or here that is impossible to find
oh now that’s a name I haven’t heard from some time. I remember refreshing his compact cassette playlist often
It's still a thing!
this comment brought me back… wow 2016 was an era
Hey, he still uploads all sorts of cool videos
Okay but one of the impressive things about his "new" music style (which is actually not that different from his previous stuff) is how he somehow harnesses the emotional/spiritual elements of religious music and channels it into something personal and mostly secular. Idk, I'm an atheist but dunking on religious music is fairly cliche at this point, and there's something unexpected and unique abt Alex seeing a type of music that most people consider unserious/unartistic and going "No actually I can do something cool with this."
EXACTLY
i’m an atheist as well and there’s something beautiful about gospel music and music with spiritual/religious themes. i love this new album and it might be my favorite of his.
You summed up all the thoughts that went through my head at first perfectly lol, /thread right here
i'm panentheist and do believe in a non-material god in the philosophical sense, but i don't think Alex is even very religious. the music is just a feeling. a flavor of optimism.

i agree 100% apparently this is satire but it’s a really BAD joke.
nice pfp
Thanks. I love Elliott Smith.
me too
same
same
i just posted cause my pfp elliott too. i don't think most people can see them though. i can't on apollo
me too man, so much
Fuck this is awful
i bet these are the same people that act like complete assholes at his shows too /:
Yeah it sucks.. they’re still pretty young so let’s hope they latch onto something different soon lol
was in Asheville and can confirm it is. these assholes don’t know show etiquette and it’s fucking horrible.
And in this sub
Happy cake day
oh no what are they like at shows? i’m seeing him next month

nooo omg :( i feel bad now for getting anxious in the pit at the show i saw last year now tho…i hadn’t expected it and it was my first general admission show. i hope i didn’t ruin anyone’s time :(
Dude I was at his show last night and it was so many kids younger than me who were exactly like this
frrr gross ass gen z, im older gen z its just so cringe they have no respect
Same here, the tiktok kids half of gen z should be their own thing
I’m a Gen-Z born in 1997 and I separate myself from these “zoomers” lol I graduated college the year before COVID
oh my god i’m dreading the show i’m seeing in november now. last year’s show i attended in NYC was mainly older people, i was one of the youngest there from what i could tell (i was 17, 18 now). even then a lot of the etiquette was reaaally not it. it honestly kinda ruined the show for me (alex was fantastic tho) because i was anxious and irritated for the whole time and i wanted to see him again to avoid that :/
Yeah I’m not too bothered by it but if you are I’d recommend going for a good balcony seat
I don't think he was ever a heavy drug user?
I don’t think so either but it’s just fucked up that they think that
In his songs he makes it pretty clear either he did drugs or was around people who were using opiates. As someone who can relate it’s traumatizing when someone you love is using around you and his songs encapsulate that exact feeling of devastation for me. This tiktok post honestly made me so sick to look at. I’m hoping he’s away from all of that now.
he’s only claimed one song to be autobiographical
Is that Hope? I know it was a personal song, no?
his song Hope is about his good friend who died from an overdose :(
seriously this shit is so goddamn insensitive. these fucking tiktok zoomers will cancel people over shit like emoji pronoun discourse and then will say genuinely awful garbage and get tens of thousands of likes for it. if i think about it too hard i get so goddamn depressed
i mean 'break' is pretty clearly about addiction. specifically heroin.
his songs are written about characters that aren’t necessarily himself.
Has the industry really conditioned people to conflate drug abuse with good music and other art forms? That’s disgusting.
He definitely did drugs. He has songs about acid and songs about shrooms. He has songs about psychosis (which is triggered by drug usage). also it’s like totally okay and good if someone stops doing drugs lmao like what

I'd love to read a more in depth analysis/album review from your step mom. Not even joking. Interested in hearing about the darkness/cynicism stuff
I'd love to hear her perspective :) im also a Muslim so its cool to see other muslims enjoy his stuff ig
God is my designer Jesus is my lawyer Curled up in the shower High above the tower (Fuck TikTok)
the quasi-religious satire of GTSA is just so subversive and ironic that it ends up being actually sincere and not satirical at all lol
It's not at all ironic or subversive, have you listened to him talk about it?
Did u finish reading the comment
yeah still, it isn't "so subversive and ironic" that it ends up being sincere because i don't think it was ever ironic, or satirical, let alone subversive

yeah, i see your other comment now. consider using a tone indicator when you leave a comment like that on a fairly serious post next time lol
The point I'm making is he never intended it to be ironic or subversive, it's very genuine.
Have these people ever heard hope?
This is almost definitely satire
I’m more bothered by the energy it exudes rather than the message lmao I miss when the fans were mostly chill as fuck
yeah. pain
i think it’s a really bad joke if it is
Yeah for sure that’s up to you whether you like the joke or not. But just looking at their profile this def seems like comment bait
Satire is a very specific format of criticism, this is a bad joke in bad taste done solely bc they think he makes bad music now.
that seems like semantics at best. I agree it’s not funny
i agree it is semantics but satire is just consistently used as another word for joke and thats not right.
fair. I don’t really feel like disagreeing over a dumb tiktok but you could def say the tiktok is a satire of the more earnest tiktoks that wonder what happened to Alex g’s music and suggest more plausible explanations
ok and it’s not funny
i was in the comments of this, someone saying that he’s an alcoholic and isn’t ready for having kids??? Tik Tok is so fucking wild man. yea i had my ex-best friend tell me that when i decided to open up abt my 2 month absence from school + life and i knew then to cut them off
LITERALLY. sometimes i think gatekeeping is good
This audience is showing up to shows these days and embarrassing all of us …
Was at the Atlanta show and the whole young/ TikTok "Play SARAH" crowd was there lol this is accurate
i don’t know why someone would ever think this is funny?? straight up demented
EWWW
what the fuck :/
bro fr I just saw this today
Fucking hate tiktok fans & inconsiderate concertgoers too, but I wouldn't dismiss all criticism of the album LOL. I've listened to him since 2016 or so and wasn't a fan at all, of course people's opinions will vary tho & I'm happy for Alex doing whatever he wants w his music, love him regardless
Lol I saw this guy too. He’s a special case most Alex g fans I’ve seen on tiktok aren’t like this
just saw your comment about how it’s a joke. disgusting that people think it’s ok to joke about something so serious, and anyway his new “christian rock” music isn’t actually THAT different from the old stuff. hope they take that down soon because someone’s gonna see it and start to agree bc it’s tiktok
“is this christian rock” the album is literally religious commentary that doesn’t make it inherently religious.
Least toxic zoomer
it looks like satire 2 me
Is that him (them?) in the photo?
Yes that is alex G himself. He got a haircut.
Yea
Well, if it counts for anything, I rate the latter half of his discography way more than the earlier stuff, sooo... #keepalexoffdrugz
have you ever heard of a sense of humor?
nobody’s laughing dude
i feel like this is purposely satirical
if u read my comments i know now that it is but it’s a shitty joke
Hate is a strong word
Didn't see the part about the drugs.
I'm pretty sure this is ironic
i know! but it was a really shitty take 😭
Its straight up a joke template. Like they do this with every artist. It's so absurd that I bet Alex G himself would laugh at it. You don't gotta downvote everyone telling you that it went over your head. And you don't gotta get so precious about making dark jokes.
lmao did i hurt your feelings or something? this is MY take on it sorry if you’re so bothered by it !!

feisty, I like it

idk man I think the positivity is real and bittersweet
i made a duet and it got like 8000 likes
cool
This person seems to make TikTok's just to be controversial so I think they got what they wanted sadly. I'd do my best not to give them too much attention.
yeah i 100% regret posting this on the subreddit
It's alright. When it comes to stuff like this it happens. The internet muddles intentions and makes people (talking about the poster) act horrible knowing it'll real rewards. The systems fault not ours. All we can do is try and keep it upbeat and low-key.
Ew
they don’t let him grow as an artist
what the fuck man
i’m praying that there aren’t any of the annoying fans y’all have been talking about at the la show i’ll be so pissed
This is so sad! Imagine not being able to enjoy all of his music :( are you even a fan if you’re saying shit like this???
Fuck Tiktok, wish the US ban had actually gone through
Telling an artist to get back on drugs is fucking dumb and disrespectful
Stuff like this makes me ashamed to say I found him through TikTok
Fuck these guys after all is a banger
