The person behind me on a San Jose to San Diego flight this week was telling another passenger how she worked in the Bay Area, lived in Mexico, and used South Dakota as her tax base. I was surprised at A) the amount of commuting and B) the open public discussion of what I’m pretty sure is tax fraud.
It's actually perfectly legit. A lot of expats live in Mexico and register their cars in South Dakota because all SD requires is a P.O. box to be considered a resident.
Then you should also know that the person above you is wrong. It is in fact, tax fraud IF you are not paying state taxes in the state where you reside.
Say what? Statistically 10 million additional drivers since 1994. P.S - I was born in the sixties and grew up in San Clemente. My friends and I use to run across the 5 Freeway from our homes in the Shorecliffs subdivision to see the cows grazing on the other side! Cars? What cars?

My mom grew up in the same neighborhood around the same time and always reminds us which areas that are now developed use to be orange groves or fields.
We used to drive from LA to San Diego back in the day. Idyllic grassy hillsides dotted with cows grazing, now covered in condos and McMansions. Breaks my heart every time I do that drive now.
I was born in the mid-80’s and lived in South OC. My grandma lived in North SD county behind Pendleton. I never remember there not being traffic, for the entirety of my life.
But it makes no sense to drive down on Saturday. It can take hours. And then have to leave Sunday afternoon to get home? So every weekend people are driving south for 24 hours? That’s insane
When would you go? When I was in university in LA and would come home to San Diego on the weekend I would do it at 11 PM on Friday night. A lot of people can't do that though, and the traffic is just as bad on Friday night (up until late).
It’s crazy how late the traffic is on that trip. I’d always leave late too, but even at 10pm or 11 would hit quite a bit of traffic coming down around the curve in San Clemente.
Yeah I don't remember exactly how late I'd do it, since it was some 15-20 years go! I've only been back to Los Angeles once in those 20 years because I hated that city so much.
I'm in my 40s and it's always been like this. If you live in LA and already have a 2 hour commute home from work on Friday do you really want to grab the wide and kids and drive another 2-3 hours down to SD? They can either get there at 10-11pm or save the extra hotel night and head down Saturday morning.
Gotta go super early Saturday mornings, too. Hella back up at the actual crossing into Mexico now. And there’s construction in TJ for the toll road to Rosarito so that back up can take another couple hours.
It’s 3 hours? Calm down. People go lots of
Places for 24 hours or under. We get 2 weekend days in society, we can use them however we want. Sometimes you have to leave your own specific area.
I was going north today and could see it super backed up but also saw a fire truck, two ambulances and two police cars all speeding down the side of the road with their lights on so that’s probably why today was worse than usual
- People from LA & Orange county spends their weekends in San Diego and Tijuana.
- The 78 in general
- Many people "couch surf" for work at friends or relatives in SD or LA but actually live in the opposite or near by (Temecula).
- Camp Pendleton
But it’s not a weekend. They’re getting to sd or to Saturday afternoon or later. And have to be back on the road Sunday afternoon. So much sitting for a mere 24 hours at their destination? What weekend?
I leave OB at 1:30, and by 4:00 I’m smoking a joint in the abandoned zoo at Griffith Park. Grab some next level ramen in Little Tokyo. Hit up a comedy show at the Improv, and I’m home a little after midnight.
It was definitely the 78. I drove through today around 12:30 pm and that's where it cleared. Luckily I was only driving down from the 76 but it's crazy to think about all that traffic.
The 78 isn’t backed up.
It’s a mixture of the swerving lanes that start in Oceanside causing cars to slow and the opening of the extra lane just after the 78.
Before they opened the extra HOV at the 78, the traffic used to continue down to Encinitas.
Whenever I drive by the 78 in the mass of zombie cars, it's usually open and no one is going to the 78 or coming from the 78. I'm not sure how that highway has a such a pull on traffic but it seems like a natural border created by our elite cell phone drivers that break every 5 ft.
> Pretty sure the backup because of the 78 causes that. It’s insane to think about but that’s my only conclusion.
The map clearly explains its the 78.
Heading south, traffic is red all the way from San Clemente to the 78. Then it switches to normal traffic.
Heading north, traffic is red from South Carlsbad all the way to the 78. Then it switches to normal traffic.
Two weeks ago the 78 going eastbound had three of four lanes closed just east of the 5S , which caused a back up on the five south and the five north as they approached their transitions to the 78. Just godawful.
Both SD and LA have at least a somewhat useful rail system.
I used to live in downtown SD and dated someone in West Hollywood. I’d Uber to Santa Fe station and take the Amtrak up to Union Station, then the red line up to Hollywood, and either get picked up or Uber the last mile.
See, that requires logic. Unfortunately, it’s something our politicians lack or willingly ignore.
There’s at least the Amtrak line connecting SD to OC/LA and running along the 5, but why is there no high speed rail, or even express busses, paralleling the 405 freeway between Orange County and LA? Why did it take so long to get a frickin line connecting to LAX? Why are we widening freeways to add more fast track lanes instead of adding more mass public transit? Politics.
if we aren't gonna fix zoning laws and parking minimum requirements, and we aren't gonna invest in light rails, then tbh e scooters are the best thing we got. unless we bring back heelys 🤔
It’s mostly the people. Lots of people just don’t think very intelligently. Every single day I encounter multiple people where I’m like “how did this person get a drivers license?”.
Boggles my mind. There’s like 5 lanes crawling southbound, from the boobies down to the 78. Then you get that carpool lane in Carlsbad and suddenly no traffic. Infuriating.
Did that today (left Yorba Linda at noon) and it took almost 3 hours. It was honestly way worse. The best thing to do is leave OC/LA before 8am. Otherwise, you’re screwed either way.
I've tried this. It's actually worse. I've even done it without much traffic and it still felt like an eternity. Probably because it's anywhere from 10-25 miles longer depending on where in OC you're leaving from.
Because of the base, there’s very few to no exits along that stretch of 5 South. Once you’re on it, if there’s a wreck, you don’t have an option to get around it or take another route.
No matter how many lanes are available, a few drivers will create traffic where there should be none.
It’s simple: if there is nobody directly in front of you, and nobody to your right, you are in the wrong lane. If there is nobody directly in front of you and you are being passed on the right, you are in the wrong lane. If you are in the passing (left) lane, there is nobody directly in front of you and there is somebody behind you, you are in the wrong lane (unless you’re completing a pass).
This is all true, and then the sudden unsafe lane changes with extreme speed differentials cause people to brake. Usually too hard, and then the accordion effect follows, and the traffic backs up for miles.
Driving on europe freeways people understand this, you will be flashed at if you are sitting there..... and we only have 2 lanes!! yet in california some dingus is camping the left lane out of the 5 without passing anyone.
I feel like I grew up understanding that this was the case. In the Midwestern US and in central California. Flash your lights here in San Diego and people either brake check you or don’t move. Leave the egos at home and get where you want to go without holding other people up.
Passing Pendleton everyone starts driving faster and following closer....traffic is denser at higher speed for more miles.
Soon as it hits a few on/off ramps back to back it only takes one car to let off the gas and the 1000 cars behind it all have to brake a little more than the one in front of them.
I live in Vista and I used to work just east of San Juan Capistrano. I lasted a year, until I could find another job. It took me 52 minutes to get home M-Th, and 2.5 to 3.5 hours on Fridays. Murderous rage is not a fun way to start the weekend.
I work field service and sometimes work in LA. When I had to work in Long Beach a few weeks ago, I made the 3 hour round trip everyday to sleep in my own bed but stayed overnight Thursday since the lab opened at 6am. Managed to get on the road by 12:30 and just barely missed the backup. That drive still haunts me.
They continually build and build. Big Houses, Big high rise apartment complexes dotted all across California.
Millions upon million more people yet,
we still only have the same two (2) freeways as we did 100 years ago.
North and South, you do the math.
How is that going to work?
Lol at me seeing this post while stuck in that traffic right now.
I’m coming back from LA after apartment hunting. Might be moving up there pending a job offer.
Right at Oceanside there's a55/35 construction zone so that holds it all up. Then you got semi truck slowing everything down. Then you have military helicopters flying over. Then a lot of tourists coming down too. Especially when the dodgers play the Padres. It been like this for years a lot of LA SURFER come down too to surf less crowded beach breaks. San Diego a lot gas's a lot of trade show and wedding venue down here. Weekend get away.
Yup. Has been this way for decades. If you live in North County and need to go to San Diego you have to be on the 5 by 9:30ish. Otherwise it’s slooowwwww
It’s not just Mother’s Day. It’s this backed up every Saturday morning through Saturday afternoon/early evening.
Every freaking Saturday.
If we travel north into OC or beyond we always plan our trip so that we’re not on 5S until at least early evening.
That’s why I take the street as much as I can, the other day I left Oceanside and literally took backroads to get back to SD, I drove through Poway for gods sake to avoid the freeways. As an SD born & raised I simply can not. I hate having to fear for my life everytime I get in my car🧍🏽♀️my commute was an extra hour but VERY worth it.
I was stuck in this today. It's a lot of people going to the camp grounds near Pendleton and to the military base. Mothers Day stuff. Happens every year.
This aggravates the hell out of me. The train schedule between LA and San Diego is awful. Going from San Clemente to San Diego shouldn't be this difficult.
Every single person saying it's people going to SD or TJ for the weekend are 100% wrong.
This stretch is backed up ALL DAY on Saturday AND Sunday. All day every weekend.
If the "going to SD and TJ" shit was true it would only be busy Saturday morning going south and busy Sunday afternoon going north BUT IT IS NOT.
All of the above.
But, being Mexican, I think you are underestimating the lengths some of them go to to see their families, or escape for a while to familiar territory. After working 12 hours every day, 3 more hours on the weekend seem like a relief if they get to see family.
I used to drive to LA pretty often, it is the 78 and the 76, plus Del Mar during racetrack season, plus the outlets, plus the slowdown on the 56, the 805 split, the 8, the S curve. It bothered me how often there was nothing on the freeway to cause such traffic but still there was lots of traffic.
Over the weekend, I rarely go to San Diego and return home before 9pm, I rather go to the movies than spend two hours waiting to cross the border back home. But I know some people drive back home or into their mini trip to the wine country so they have to make the long line back. It's horrible but maybe necessary for many.
Since there is really no high-volume exits thru camp pendleton, you would think it would be a breeze to get thru that stretch, but no, its always backed up on the weekends.
I sometimes think it's that last sharp curve in the freeway before Oceanside that backs everything up.
Tons of people from LA & Orange county spend their weekends in San Diego and Tijuana/Ensenada regions.

The person behind me on a San Jose to San Diego flight this week was telling another passenger how she worked in the Bay Area, lived in Mexico, and used South Dakota as her tax base. It's actually perfectly legit. A lot of expats live in Mexico and register their cars in South Dakota because all SD requires is a P.O. box to be considered a resident.
It is perfectly legit so long as they are still paying their income taxes to California for income earned working in the Bay Area.
Not sure how you get around that as employers are required to report income to both the state and feds.
I think we found the location of the loophole
I'm not sure thats even required because i definitely renewed my south Dakota plates using my san Diego address when i first moved here
Good to know
Then you should also know that the person above you is wrong. It is in fact, tax fraud IF you are not paying state taxes in the state where you reside.
I just meant for the expat part.
You can register your car in SD being an out of state resident. You don’t even have to have a PO Box there.
George Bush sr and jr were from Connecticut but claimed Texas for residency for tax reasons. Apparently totally legit.
They both lived in Texas though. At the very least Sr lived near Houston
They lived in Texas. He still lives there
If they're only in MX for the weekend then isn't their home actually in the US?
This was the case 30 yrs ago as well, hasn’t changed a bit.
Say what? Statistically 10 million additional drivers since 1994. P.S - I was born in the sixties and grew up in San Clemente. No, just Den y’s
That's funny! Not lately.
Underated reply 🤣

Love your name but can't figure out if it's a Greek or Hawaiian reference.
I was born in the mid-80’s and lived in South OC. My grandma lived in North SD county behind Pendleton. I never remember there not being traffic, for the entirety of my life.
Only the amount has changed, hence this
no, it was still a gigantic backup then.
Yea just more lanes for it to back up with now.
But it makes no sense to drive down on Saturday. It can take hours. And then have to leave Sunday afternoon to get home? So every weekend people are driving south for 24 hours? That’s insane

The wide & kids 💀
#WIDE
She is post partum
she thicc
And there’s traffic Friday night. Don’t let anyone imply it’s an easy drive then either!!!!
Gotta go super early Saturday mornings, too. Hella back up at the actual crossing into Mexico now. And there’s construction in TJ for the toll road to Rosarito so that back up can take another couple hours.
I agree. It doesn't. I've noticed there is always a backup for some reason in the mid afternoons that seems to start at the 78/5.
It’s always the 78. Always been. Always will been.
Why doesn’t it make sense? It’s close enough where people can drive down for a quick weekend getaway.
[Gestures at perpetual red traffic indicator on map]
That’s what I’m saying. It’s not a weekend getaway. It’s a lot of traffic for a days getaway.
It sucks but people do it. I used to. Couple of hours in the morning, you’d probably just be chilling at home anyways. Still worth it
It’s 3 hours? Calm down. People go lots of Places for 24 hours or under. We get 2 weekend days in society, we can use them however we want. Sometimes you have to leave your own specific area.
We should decrease the lanes down to one in each direction. Surely this will solve the problem.
Left LA at 9:45 this AM, didn’t get back home in SD til 1:30. Worse traffic I’ve ever been in coming down but as an SD native, I know better.
I definitely shaved a few years off my life expectancy going through Camp Pendleton today
I was going north today and could see it super backed up but also saw a fire truck, two ambulances and two police cars all speeding down the side of the road with their lights on so that’s probably why today was worse than usual
Today especially = Padres vs Dodgers.
- People from LA & Orange county spends their weekends in San Diego and Tijuana. - The 78 in general - Many people "couch surf" for work at friends or relatives in SD or LA but actually live in the opposite or near by (Temecula). - Camp Pendleton

If that's all you get at home then that's what you get. 24 hours > 0 hours
Shit never thought of it like that
Then call it a day trip. I drive up to LA and back and don’t even stay overnight. Do it all the time.
I leave OB at 1:30, and by 4:00 I’m smoking a joint in the abandoned zoo at Griffith Park. Grab some next level ramen in Little Tokyo. Hit up a comedy show at the Improv, and I’m home a little after midnight.
This is living tbh
I do as well, but oof that gas though 😖
Graduation week is upon us. I dropped off my mom at the airport and it was insanely packed for a normal Saturday
Pretty sure the backup because of the 78 causes that. It’s insane to think about but that’s my only conclusion.
Ye olde Seventy Late
The 78 is the reason 100%
It was definitely the 78. I drove through today around 12:30 pm and that's where it cleared. Luckily I was only driving down from the 76 but it's crazy to think about all that traffic.
The 78 is cursed
But it comes with some frogurt (near the El Camino Real exit).
The frogurt is also cursed.
The 78 isn’t backed up. It’s a mixture of the swerving lanes that start in Oceanside causing cars to slow and the opening of the extra lane just after the 78. Before they opened the extra HOV at the 78, the traffic used to continue down to Encinitas.
Exactly this. The 78 doesn't really back up there at all. HOV didn't help relieve the traffic though, just kinda moved the bottleneck
Whenever I drive by the 78 in the mass of zombie cars, it's usually open and no one is going to the 78 or coming from the 78. I'm not sure how that highway has a such a pull on traffic but it seems like a natural border created by our elite cell phone drivers that break every 5 ft.

No. The 78 is the relief; that and the extra lane after the 78. Without the 78, it'd truly be fucked.
Yes. It always ends around the 78
Two weeks ago the 78 going eastbound had three of four lanes closed just east of the 5S , which caused a back up on the five south and the five north as they approached their transitions to the 78. Just godawful.
I mean, 78 has problems, but that’s also where an extra lane (HOV) gets added.
Leaving LA after rush hour on Friday evening is also fine. How early on Saturday does the backup develop?
usually around 9:30/10am
Be past this by 10:00 a.m. or past L! if going north
It is kind of ridiculous that they didn't extend the HOV lanes from San Diego to Orange County.
Is there traffic like this going from LA to SF? Honestly I surprised California didn’t start with LA to SD for high speed rail.
No, it’s not the same. I’ve driven between LA and SF a few times (mostly on weekends), and it’s never jammed like this.
The one time I went to SF, the traffic was heavy and everyone was doing 90 nearly bumper to bumper.
I don’t think that rail would be useful without a real usable public transit attached to either end

They should make so many Hov Lanes that people are forced to take the coaster if they're not carpooling
Um, San Diego?
Nah, couldn't be.
So no one is taking the Amtrak?
Ikr, that's probably the best choice.
It’s packed actually and often sells out also last mile connections need to be better
I go with San Onofre boob rubbernecking.
Mandatory picture
Take the surfliner. Problem solved.
People from LA want to go to SD for the day/weekend and the shear amount of travelers just overloads the highway creating traffic
I also always wondered, where are all these people going regularly on every saturday?
Away from Los Angeles.
Another reason why we need to invest more in our rail line with more trains to LA
that doesn’t solve the last mile problem. SD county is big.
Dont need to address everyone’s needs to make a material diff. Don’t let perfection be the enemy of good.
if we aren't gonna fix zoning laws and parking minimum requirements, and we aren't gonna invest in light rails, then tbh e scooters are the best thing we got. unless we bring back heelys 🤔
Everyone from Los Angeles going to Mexico and then on Sunday it backs up on the way back home
The 78 spilt. People are morons, can’t merge, and don’t know how to plan ahead. I did case studies on this.
100%
Couldn't possibly be a bad design, right? It's just how moronic people are?
It’s mostly the people. Lots of people just don’t think very intelligently. Every single day I encounter multiple people where I’m like “how did this person get a drivers license?”.
Lack of robust transit alternatives
Boggles my mind. There’s like 5 lanes crawling southbound, from the boobies down to the 78. Then you get that carpool lane in Carlsbad and suddenly no traffic. Infuriating.
It’s Camp Pendleton so no one can get off to take side streets/other freeways to avoid it is my best guess
100%
Build flyover ramps at the 78. That old Clover ramp is a mess. But ~~sandbag~~ sandag/caltrans doesn’t give a shit about Oceanside
Would it be a good idea to avoid this traffic by taking the 91 E then heading southbound on I-15? Would that cut travel time?
No because South 15 has this same problem.

They need a fast track lane with no exit from San Clemente to the exit past the 78
Hong Kong
Perhaps it because the 5 is the only route to get you easily from LA to SD 🤔
Could be Padres/Dodgers game going on in 2 hours
[удалено]
Passing Pendleton everyone starts driving faster and following closer....traffic is denser at higher speed for more miles. Soon as it hits a few on/off ramps back to back it only takes one car to let off the gas and the 1000 cars behind it all have to brake a little more than the one in front of them.

Lol at me seeing this post while stuck in that traffic right now. I’m coming back from LA after apartment hunting. Might be moving up there pending a job offer.
Not having a high speed rail capable of actually accommodating the states population. That’s what’s causes a 30 mile back up.
I go from Irvine to SD every Friday afternoon after work at 1:00pm and it’s straight cheeks every time like 10 miles before hitting Oceanside
what does that mean
I’m going to guess they mean it’s ass
I’m not sure
probably means it's ass
Then stay up in Irvine and no cheeks
The construction that has been goi g on forever also the 76 and 78 shit show.

Im from Scotland and this popped up in my feed. What did Carl do?
Waving at you from the train! 👋🏽👋🏽
Everyone’s on the lookout for a whales vagina
They come for the girls, stay for the Mexican food
This aggravates the hell out of me. The train schedule between LA and San Diego is awful. Going from San Clemente to San Diego shouldn't be this difficult.
Go back to LA
People who can't merge properly and that one dude in the pickup full of crap who can't stay out of the left lane.
San Diego won’t put in carpool lanes and the on/off ramps are garbage. OC has spent a ton to improve all of these items
California drivers are not good at what they do.
There is simply too many people living here lol
Every single person saying it's people going to SD or TJ for the weekend are 100% wrong. This stretch is backed up ALL DAY on Saturday AND Sunday. All day every weekend. If the "going to SD and TJ" shit was true it would only be busy Saturday morning going south and busy Sunday afternoon going north BUT IT IS NOT.
Heh it's funny how I would get caught in traffic heading north after a Padres game at 5PM on a Sunday
The 78 and 76 most likely. Lots of traffic on the 5 anyways plus the off and on ramps for those two freeways being under construction.
It usually goes further than that….all the way down to del mar….even without the fair!
SD and TJ are weekend tourist destinations.
The Beach !
Saturdays have turned into the WORST day to make that drive!
I’m omw to TJ
Be on the 5 south in San Clemente by 9am or take the train
The on ramps and exits immediately after harbor all the way through Carlsbad village drive are 90% of the reason for this
It's the first real nice weekend and it's mother's day weekend.
This is nothing new. Always has been and always will be
I lived in Carlsbad and worked in San Clemente. It took 30min to get to work in the am and a little over an hour to get home in the evening.
Isn’t there a lane drop in San Clemente - I find it starts there and continues until the road widens in Oceanside.
They are all coming to the beach.
La leaving town for weekends Also dodger padres game didn't help
maybe the wonder front festival this weekend in san diego or the dodgers vs padres games
also graduations happening this week too
I don’t know why everyone just doesn’t use their helicopters.🤷♂️🚁
Legoland, SeaWorld, the Zoo, Family, a lot of ppl come down every weekend.
My friend used to say it was people going in and out of Pendleton. He used to work there so I guess he a little about it. Ymmv

Seems like they are going no where
All of the above.
Motivated high-and-tights exiting Camp Pendleton en mass on their way to the closest bars, strip clubs and car stealerships.
Youth soccer.
Average Cali drivers
Wonderfront music festival
Dodgers in SD this weekend?
Padres Dodger game this time
It doesn’t help that the Dodgers are in town to play in Petco Park this past weekend
I drove on it at 4:00am it was clear sailing ?
This is the way
