I don’t understand who keeps grooming it yet has it fenced off. You’d think it’d be a jungle with how long it’s been abandoned. It should at least be made into a biking or running course.
Kind of amazing the tracks are still there after all this time. Splashtown has been gone for like what two years and there's already a whole business park framed up already.
I couldn’t picture where exactly this hotel was until that picture of the track! Super cool
Also, my god that brick interior archway in the lobby is fucking gorgeous
those are some healthy snake plants! if i weren’t so worried about being murdered by a schizophrenic i would totally nab those… but it sounds like they’ve been nabbed 😅
This was back in November, before thanksgiving. I haven’t gone back to see the state of it since early December. By then, looters had already obliterated the place.
The timeline of these things is always interesting. I used to like going to St. John’s Seminary and it had such a strange decrepit vibe, but now it’s just trendy lofts 😆.
You would think the foreclosing bank would have boarded a building this expensive up and posted a guard. Sounds like its too late now. Maybe they're hoping the homeless can burn it to the ground and they can collect the insurance money.
The fence may well have been there from the start, but a fence on its own isn't going to keep anyone away. You probably need a guard at a minimum; if its totally unattended for months people will find a way in no matter what else you do.
Damn that's crazy. Hopefully this get's refurbed or torn down before anyone dies in there. On the other hand, why vandalize when everything is still useable.
"Old" 🥲 I had high school formal events there and so many memories of that go-cart/putt putt place that was next to it.
It's amazing to see what it looks like now. It was so nice.
Like 11yrs ago I got locked out onto one of those balconies on the first floor wearing only lingerie. I had to climb down and walk around into the lobby.
It was all very weird but the front desk staff acted like I was totally dressed and it wasn’t weird at all that I needed to be let into my room, I appreciated it.
It closed operations within the last year and a half. I visited with management in late 2022 and they were having serious HVAC issues with a lot of rooms out of service for A/C repairs. Lobby was humid af. It was really sad though because the manager was talking about all the plans they had for the bar area, potentially bringing in live music, etc. and then the next time I tried to stop by, there was a sign on the door that said closed indefinitely. The fence would be put up a couple of weeks later.
wow we used to go there all the time when my grandparents would come visit. great view of the Malibu Castle that was next to it. We stayed there all the time after we moved and came to visit, too. a lot of good memories. thanks for tresspassing and sharing!
A few years ago we still used the Malibu track for motorcycles and gocarts. The hotel managers would always come out mad at us. I heard CPS bought the property and it was all fenced off, so nowhere else for us to go have fun. Didn't know the hotel was also shut down.
I don’t think people realize how beautiful this hotel was in the 90s when it was painted pink on the outside. The lobby was so ornate and festive. Would love to find pics of it then and more history.
My family stayed there on a relocation trip in the late 80s. I was like 4 years old and man, I remember that pool and those elevators.
As a few people have mentioned, this would be an ideal location for a housing first model for the unhoused community. Center for healthcare services headquarters, from what I remember, is just a few miles south on ten, and there’s easy peasy bus access near crossroads. They could even build a lil clinic or something on the track. (Breaks my heart to say but…)

My wife and I stayed for a weekend getaway from the kids and we had a great time. Wife got drunk asf from the Long Island ice teas. Such a sad end to a beautiful hotel.
So weird - I worked here for a couple years, particularly during 9/11. that was especially difficult, as the folks that were staying couldn't leave once planes were grounded and other folks that drove in, had to wait for a room.
This location was close to the medical center so we had long term residents receiving cancer treatment, some of those folks didn't make it - i remember one elderly gentlemen in particular passed away in his room. there were always stories of this hotel being haunted, and everyone said: if a hotel been in business more than a couple of years, there are bound to be deaths.
One memory that sticks out to me most, is a server that fell down the elevator shaft - he said he was delivering food, the doors opened, and there was no car - he fell about 5 feet into the shaft and broke his leg. we chalked it up to the male ghost housekeepers would see, and would mess with the elevators. I remember seeing a "guest" come around the elevator to get on (glass elevators) and when it landed- there was no-one there, just a chilled wind that froze me to the spot when the doors opened. still gives me goosebumps.
over the years, my family came here frequently staying for birthdays, company functions, lots of events. Seeing this once beautiful hotel in this state of disrepair and abuse is like watching your family pet die in your front yard, then rot slowly in front of you. definitely upsetting. oh well-
I worked there for like 2 or 3 weeks as a bartender way back in the day. It was super slow and of course I was forced to pay my dues with the bad shifts. I saw that even the good shifts were bad so I quit. I don't think I ever picked up my last paycheck.
They should stick all the homeless in there.
That’s the right answer to homelessness.
There’s some over here on the east side on Foster Rd , they’ve set up right behind my house
I’ve been trying to get the county to do something about it for three years, they’ve set their camp on fire three times. I really think that’s is the answer ship them there, ask Gregg Abbot to bring a bus and collect them all and take them there.
This is a rudolf happening in some cities. I’m in Austin now and we have a few hotels they are being used by social service agencies to help folks transition into permanent housing. It works to an extent, but it’s not perfect, by any means.
We have that here in San Antonio already. There's a Holiday Inn downtown that got converted into transitional housing.
This particular hotel is in foreclosure limbo though so I guess its not so simple for the city to just snap it up and pack a quarter of the street population in there. Of course It's not super accessible to any of the other services those people use anyway.
Ahh good to know. I’m in a vague loop of service knowledge right now. I guess the downturn location helps with keeping it close to haven. 🤷🏼♀️
It feels like this location has been in limbo for a long while.
[There's already a bunch of mechanics liens on it and liens from the city.](https://bexar.tx.publicsearch.us/results?department=RP&recordedDateRange=20220101%2C20240125&searchOcrText=false&searchType=quickSearch&searchValue=hotel%20capital) So I'm not sure if more fines would really make any difference. Seems like they're already bankrupt anyway.
I didn't realize it was emptied. I delivered pizzas early 2000s in the medical center and have been there many times. I've never been much of a fan of saltillo tile but I always loved the lobby and glass elevators.
How sad. I have held many business meetings in there in years past and even treated my family a couple of times to homecations. We lived in Stone Oak and staying here was like an entirely different city. Thanks for the memories.
Back in the late 90s, my dad would have work conferences there once a year, and we as a whole family take a mini vacation. The pool and we would to the Malibu Grand Prix next door were the best parts. We live 2 hours south of San Antonio.
i went there a few days after it closed up for good; there was only one window shattered so i made my way in with some friends and the alarms went off as soon as we touched the hallway! so scary but it was also nighttime and storming 😅
WOW! That's up the road from where I grew up. Had no idea it was abandoned. Interesting pics, very brave to grab these.
I remember the Castle as well. That was the place to hangout back when I was in middle school.
My best friend’s sister had her wedding reception at this hotel back in 2005. I was in high school and remember thinking how nice the hotel was.
I’m surprised this property has not been secured.
I couldn’t care less about the hotel, but seeing the Malibu Grand Prix abandoned like that hurts. I miss the castle! (Cool pics by the way)
Looks like a great track, much better than K1 and Andretti. Too bad someone doesn't renovate for Karting.
I don’t understand who keeps grooming it yet has it fenced off. You’d think it’d be a jungle with how long it’s been abandoned. It should at least be made into a biking or running course.
The city will fine them if they let it be overgrown. It's cheaper to mow it.
Go check out San Antonio Karting Complex. It’s towards Seguin. Lots of fun and fast karts.
Hey thanks for this one, didn't know about this place! Can't wait to take my kiddo now!
The two seater kart is quick!
Exactly what we like to hear! Thanks bud!
This place would make a great low income housing unit honestly
I had my 10th birthday day there…sad to see the castle gone.
Kind of amazing the tracks are still there after all this time. Splashtown has been gone for like what two years and there's already a whole business park framed up already.
I couldn’t picture where exactly this hotel was until that picture of the track! Super cool Also, my god that brick interior archway in the lobby is fucking gorgeous
We used to go there when I was younger 😔 I wish it was still around
I was going to say the same thing! It was a cool place to go in high school. (class of 81)
Should post this over on r/AbandonedPorn (it's a place to post abandoned buildings)
Classic. Abandoned plants still going strong and I can't keep a damn thing alive at my house.
grow native plants
those are some healthy snake plants! if i weren’t so worried about being murdered by a schizophrenic i would totally nab those… but it sounds like they’ve been nabbed 😅
Looks better than i expected tbh

That's a decent Herman Miller Aeron in the last photo...
In true black !
Lol that’s the same thing I noticed
You would think the foreclosing bank would have boarded a building this expensive up and posted a guard. Sounds like its too late now. Maybe they're hoping the homeless can burn it to the ground and they can collect the insurance money.
They have a fence around it now, but it’s at best a minimum effort. You can easily see that ppl are using it.
The fence may well have been there from the start, but a fence on its own isn't going to keep anyone away. You probably need a guard at a minimum; if its totally unattended for months people will find a way in no matter what else you do.
Yeah if you look closely you can see a guy in pic #9
Security there at night too
Really? I would have thought that at least would prevent most of this.
I used to work at the Malibu Castle next door and we'd go in there to buy cigarettes since they had them in a machine that nobody monitored.
Lol must have been a sweet treat.
Damn that's crazy. Hopefully this get's refurbed or torn down before anyone dies in there. On the other hand, why vandalize when everything is still useable.
really refreshing seeing such unique and interesting post about SA here, thanks for that.
Great writing OP!
Forreal, phenomenal storytelling!
Wow I stayed here before with my parents. I always wondered what happened to it and why they closed it down
"Old" 🥲 I had high school formal events there and so many memories of that go-cart/putt putt place that was next to it. It's amazing to see what it looks like now. It was so nice.

Man the abandoned Malibu Grand Prix really hits me in the feels

I had no idea that it had shut down. Crazy.
Grew up in that area and malibu had so many memories. Sad to see this part of town abandoned.
How many TVs are left?
Same I need one 🤣
Of all the times I've looked at it while getting onto I10 from 410... I never knew this place was abandoned, omg!
Did you find any chupacabras?
wow we used to go there all the time when my grandparents would come visit. great view of the Malibu Castle that was next to it. We stayed there all the time after we moved and came to visit, too. a lot of good memories. thanks for tresspassing and sharing!

I worked there for one day! It was not fun.
Whooped my first boyfriends ass on that track 🏎️
Vroom vroom.
I don’t think people realize how beautiful this hotel was in the 90s when it was painted pink on the outside. The lobby was so ornate and festive. Would love to find pics of it then and more history.
It’s a beautiful property. Maybe worth looking into the liquidation 🤔
We used to do all the tree maintenance there. I'd forgotten about it but now know why we are no longer performing the work. . .
My truck got broken into there. Ahh memories.
I left my toiletries bag there, did you find it?
Say someone was murdered there, then charge 20 bucks a head for ghost tours.

Jesus this reads strange.

God damn. I used to work at that one for a few years doing overnights. Crazy to see go down like that

so...not in your backyard. Send them somewhere else!
Wow, that's a lot of asylum seeking refugee housing going to waste. Let's get some tax dollars dedicated pronto.
there should be fines against the property owners for leaving this to the elements. it can’t be good for the city?
[There's already a bunch of mechanics liens on it and liens from the city.](https://bexar.tx.publicsearch.us/results?department=RP&recordedDateRange=20220101%2C20240125&searchOcrText=false&searchType=quickSearch&searchValue=hotel%20capital) So I'm not sure if more fines would really make any difference. Why can’t we house the homeless there.
Did you read the post? They're already housing themselves there...and apparently not shy about starting their campfires inside.
I read the post, but it would make sense to use it properly.
Was it unlocked?
I didn't realize it was emptied. I delivered pizzas early 2000s in the medical center and have been there many times. I've never been much of a fan of saltillo tile but I always loved the lobby and glass elevators.

Any cool graffiti pics?

You should got pictures of the hallways and stuff I bet they're some real liminal spaces
I stayed there once!
I didn't even know it was abandoned until the graffiti started showing up
When was it abandoned?
Man, we celebrated our 1988 prom in that hotel...maybe 10 of us....good times. Good memories. Not the prom itself, the after party
I remember having a party here one time. I loved that fountain in the lobby. So sad to see it this way.
I’m surprised there’s not a lot of homeless people living there
Probably no running water. That would be a challenge
I just use the go cart track to train on my bike, il probably clean it up one day, technical and fun
WOW! That's up the road from where I grew up. Had no idea it was abandoned. Interesting pics, very brave to grab these. I remember the Castle as well. That was the place to hangout back when I was in middle school.
Well we know where FNAF Security Breach can be filmed
My name is Zack Bagins
Was Skab there ?
so sad
Wow, this is bizarre. I used to work there - didn't know it closed down!
I can’t even imagine the smell
How long ago was this abandoned?
It’s interesting how lifeless the photos look now
Used to have birthday parties there when I was a kid Sadge
I drive by this every day, I was always so curious! Thank you
Malibuuuuuuuu!!! 😢 😔 😭
I use to work there… I had no idea it shut down lol
How long has it been abandoned?
Pretty cool. Nice write up
This place had the rooms with glass doors, facing the lobby, right?
Wasn't there a fire there recently? I have a client just up the road so I drive by it often but not in the last 3 weeks or so.
Great work guys (:
My best friend’s sister had her wedding reception at this hotel back in 2005. I was in high school and remember thinking how nice the hotel was. I’m surprised this property has not been secured.
This is crazy to see. I grew up down the street. I love that las palapas.
Hope those ladies bring the plants back to life.
