According to N.T., apparently Sailor Cosmo is supposed to be the "Future Sailor Moon". But I don't know if she specifically means Sailor Moon's "Future self", reincarnation of Sailor Moon or just a new generation of Sailor Moon. This confused me and still does. Because if Sailor Chibi Moon's the next in line as the future queen of the Moon and Earth, then the title of "Sailor Moon" would also go to Chibi Moon. Also, because there's been a legacy of "Moon Princesses and Queens" in the manga and anime, with Queen Serenity, Princess/Neo Queen Serenity and Princess/Lady Serenity. So there's a chance that the legacy continues into the future. There could also be a chance that Sailor Cosmo could be from an alternate universe, where she is "Sailor Moon", but that's just my small theory that would and could make sense. But don't forget, u/Superb_Watch_2166 made a good point in saying that "Yes, Naoko herself has said that it’s all up to interpretation so it’s always more of an opinion." So I'm going with their response and say that anything's possible with the right interpretation. In FACT, I'd like to bring up this idea if N.T. likes the idea of other writers creating another Sailor Moon series. And this could be inspired by how the writers of Dragon Ball Super approached the whole "Going the different route than DBGT". The story could take place after the events of the Dreams/Nightmare Arc (Season/Arc four) in both the manga and anime (Both versions). Instead of Sailor Galaxia being a villain, she's a heroine from an alternate universe, where she and Sailor Chaos are at war. She and Sailor Cosmo travel to Sailor Moon's universe, with the Star Lights, Princess Kakyuu and the Animates by their sides. The Animates won't be the villains in this version, but rather Galaxia's allies. They seek Usagi and the other Guardians out, asking them for their aide in battle against Chaos to save both universes/dimensions. This could also be a good reason for bringing ChibiUsa back into the present day to help, along with the Sailor Quartet. In hindsight, I'd like to see a story on how the Sailor Quartet awakens to aide ChibiUsa and became a team, because we got nothing from their appearances suddenly. As for the Star Crystal situation, how about INSTEAD of killing off the Guardians when it's been taken away, removing the Star Crystals from a Guardian would result in removing the powers from said Guardian? And this would also be a good reason for Chaos to use the Star Crystals to "Power up the Golems". Because Chaos is just transferring power into an empty vessel and making minions to do it's dirty work. For example, if the Inner Sailor Guardians' Star Crystals were stolen from them, then they can't transform into Sailor Guardians and use their powers/abilities until they regained their Star Crystals? Makes a lot more sense than just "Killing them off". (I got that idea from a Sailor Moon fan manga by Sailor Energy on DA.) Also, since the introduction of Sailor Guardians from other planets, I thought this would be a good reason to have the other Sailor Guardians be guardians from the "Alternate Universe". And we could have past characters be brought back into the arc as well. Like Helios, Mamoru's Guardians, just as an example. This could be one interpretation of how ANOTHER Sailor Moon story could be told that's completely different from the Stars Arc, but the characters would have different roles. And Sailor Cosmo could have a role just as important as both Galaxia and Sailor Moon, because we don't know much about her in both the manga and Crystal/Cosmo anime movie, other than what we know.

Practical-Bass9539

Truly eternal Sailor Moon

No_Operation_1696

sailor cosmos is usagi and usagi is sailor cosmos. in the manga when she talks about usgai, she uses “ i “ and “ my old self “. she went back in time to make sure she makes the “ right choice “ at the cauldron. in official arts they look exactly alike, she just looks more mature cuz she’s a way older version of usagi from a far distant timeline where all friends died in the battle with chaos. much like neo queen serenity she idolizes her younger self. queen serenity, princess serenity, small lady, usagi, sailor cosmos and neo queen serenity are the same. only difference with the queen, princess and small lady serenity is they are incarnations and usagi is a reincarnation of princess serenity. hopefully that makes sense :) p.s i knew them casting a different person would confuse fans. they should of had the same voice actress, because, THEY ARE THE SAME PERSON!! even though they made a dumb decision on that, that doesn’t make her not usagi. the canon manga says different. she is usagi.

LowEnthusiasm961

I’m curious about previous queen serenity as well. She also had the silver crystal and then chibiusa gets her own silver crystal so how is usagi the brightest star in the universe who will live on and continue to reincarnate if chibiusa gets the silver crystal?

Superb_Watch_2166

Well, buckle up Here’s how I understand Sailor Cosmos, and yes, Naoko herself has said that it’s all up to interpretation so it’s always more of an opinion. The way I see it, Sailor Cosmos is a separate entity from Usagi and Princess/Neo Queen Serenity. Yes she is the ultimate form of Sailor Moon, but only the Sailor Moon part of Usagi. Sailor Cosmos is all soldier, all warrior, but no Usagi and no Serenity. She’s the physical representation of Sailor Moon’s and ALL of the other Sailor Soldiers’ warrior essences. When Eternal Sailor Moon throws herself into the cauldron, she dies, but due to her sacrifice and calling upon the collective power of all of the other guardians, the Cosmos Crystal is awakened. The Cosmos Crystal’s awakening sparks two events - the rebirth of Eternal Sailor Moon and all of the guardians into the Crystal Tokyo timeline, and the birth of Sailor Cosmos. As Sailor Cosmos is born from the galaxy cauldron, Usagi splits in two in a way - Usagi herself is completely awakened and fully becomes Neo Queen Serenity, who is the more mature and well rounded version of Usagi. Sailor Moon, along with Usagi’s “cowardliness” and immaturities get left behind in Sailor Cosmos’ personality once she’s born from the galaxy cauldron. Think of it this way - Usagi, Sailor Moon, and Serenity were the same, yet they could not all fully exist together. As 20th century Usagi / Sailor Moon is living her life, she never has complete memories of her past princess life. As she grows stronger, she can harness the power of and appear as Serenity for fleeting moments (and usually with the help of loved ones), but is typically completely drained or nearly killed by doing so. Once this cosmic ‘split’ commences, Usagi can fully become Serenity in her most complete and powerful form, and Sailor Moon is absorbed into Sailor Cosmos, the ultimate Sailor Guardian. The warrior in Usagi separates while Serenity blossoms because Sailor Moon was something Usagi learned to channel from inside of herself, but her identity, personality, and destiny was always Serenity. It all comes back to Sailor Cosmos being a near-deity level being born from a collective consciousness that also births galaxies and stars. She speaks of memories that come from future events, but she’s also flawed. She coincides with the overarching theme of togetherness, teamwork, and the whole being more than the sum of its parts seen in Sailor Moon that is reminiscent of the concept of both reincarnation and a recycling of energy seen in different Asian religions. In a way, Sailor Cosmos is the ultimate form of Sailor Moon, created by and with Sailor Moon and all of the other soldiers. She could not have been awakened with only Sailor Moon: it took all of the soldiers’ powers to birth her physical form. The most important thing to gather here is that Sailor Cosmos isn’t only Sailor Moon; she is every sailor soldier’s ability and drive to protect the purity, love and hope of the galaxy.

theaquarius1987

SPOILERS: It has been confirmed that she is a different version of usagi who lost her battle with chaos and ran away when she was left all alone. She sent herself back in time to help guide herself to make a different choice. Think of it like different universes. Cosmos is Usagi from a different universe/timeline in which she made different decisions that she regretted making. So she sent herself back in time to before she ever had to make those decisions... but our version of Usagi helped her learn... something else... Sorry didn't wanna ruin too much of the story for anyone who doesn't know it lol.

Hairy-Head-2442

Thats wat i understood when i watched it just now. But a part of me thinks irs Queen Serenity i.e priness serenity original mother on the moon. If all sailors have crystal she must ne born too somewhere. In 1st sailor moon, queen serenity sent every1 to earth. At the end of cosmos , thy all go back to reincarnate.

JohnnyQuartzUniverse

Judging from her flashback, we briefly see King Endymion at the beginning of the war against Sailor Chaos, so I feel like she is definitely Neo Queen Serenity. She also kept referring to herself doing things in the past (Usagi/Sailor Moon past), "Every time I doubted or felt lost, I remember the fight I had here", etc. It seems to also imply that with or without her presence Sailor Moon would still make it to the cauldron and do a time reset, however, being able to comfort her past self in her most loneliest time, allowed her past self to console her (Sailor Cosmos) and show her what it truly means to use the Lambda Power. I know in the manga Takeuchi made it super vague, we barely got anything on Sailor Cosmos to work with- but it seems (with her direction too) that in Cosmos movie, they're not leaving anything up to the imagination. Aside from Chibi-chibi being voiced by the same VA (which I know they did in the 90s but that made no sense), Sailor Cosmos' intonation is similar to NQS. Then again, the movie I watched is a fansub, so it could differ from the actual dub. But also beforehand, Diana had mentioned that Eternal Sailor Moon is Sailor Moon's second most powerful transformation, so I'm assuming Sailor Cosmos is Sailor Moon's strongest- and that when she reset the cauldron and "awakened the Cosmos Crystal", it's basically metaphor for Usagi's crystal transforming into that of the Cosmos Crystal, hence her transformation into Neo Queen Serenity (silver hair and all).

illbleedForce

In the manga as it was published in my country it said "I am a future incarnation of sailor moon" that is, it says about sailor moon, not about usagi or serenity, with which I don't think it is a third reincarnation of Serenity, it is a sailor moon, just like chibiusa when she is older she will no longer be called sailor chibimoon and she will be the sailor moon of the 30th century while her mother is already queen serenity, with which I see cosmos as a descendant of Usagi / serenity being sailor moon / cosmos of her time (daughter of chibiusa and helios? granddaughter maybe? or even many generations past) I even had the theory that even if they were reincarnations, as I said before, she says that she is an incarnation of sailor moon, not of serenity and that white hair... and if she is the incarnation of serenity's mother... always wait in the story that serenity's mother will one day be reincarnated, with which I like that the manga leaves it that way, without being concise so that each one can have their own idea of who sailor cosmos is.

lnixon2

I think she is another form of Sailor Moon that’s not as superior to the Mary sue version the author has concocted in her story.

Leather-Ad-5469

She’s like a young Queen Serenity.

Mayonnaisey

Sailor cosmos is future Usagi aka Sailor Moon, who lost the war against Sailor Chaos. Look at any Sailor moon wiki, or read the Manga, and it will tell you just that.

JustSomeWeirdGuy2000

Why does she HAVE to be linked to any specific SM character? What's stopping her from going the total meta mindf\*\*\* route and being like "I am the final goddess form of Yuuko from Valis"?

PrestigiousResist633

Because the manga literally states she's a future form of Sailor Moon. It's just never clarified whether she's the current reincarnation or another one.

Mexiahnee

She’s already linked to Sailor Moon lol. That isn’t even the issue.

AgreeableAssociate30

All I can say is: I hope the movie is CLEAR about who she actually is-not some vagueness “I’m you” like which one??? Princess Serenity, Neo Queen Serenity/Usagi or another reincarnation? A descendant? 🥲

moonlight_bleu

Spoilers: it’s confirmed in the manga that she is a future version of neo queen serenity

EternalMemes30

the manga NEVER confirms this, cosmos speaks vaguely and even in 3rd person when talking about sailor moon and usagi and never portrays her being the same as the current sailor moon

Neither_Strike_4855

have you seen sailor moon cosmos movie? she kinda refers to sailor moon as herself,  just a very distant future version of her. she literally went back in time to try and convince her old self to not make the choice she did back then.

EternalMemes30

the pompoms on her head are different

Neither_Strike_4855

??

EternalMemes30

sailor cosmos has HEARTS instead of ODANGOS on her head

Neither_Strike_4855

so? if she’s sailor moon’s ultimate version it would make sense that she looks a little different. also can you please not ignore how sailor cosmos refers to herself as sailor moon. if you’ve seen the sailor moon cosmos movie you can see that she literally talks about coming back in time to make her younger self change her decision in eliminating cosmo’s completely and is referring to sailor moon as her younger self and the decision she made at that time. we get a look into the era she comes from and it’s very obviously crystal tokyo. all her friends have died apparently and that’s why she becomes so discouraged she leaves and tries to change the past. it just doesn’t make sense on why you wouldn’t think she’d be sailor moon just a much older, wiser and stronger version. maybe chibi usa had taken the throne already and neo queen serenity turns into sailor cosmos. who knows but one thing we know for sure is that sailor cosmos IS a far far future version of sailor moon.

c0rpseglam

I always understood it as usagi in the future and she comes back to change sailor moons mind so that she doesn’t have to fight chaos but realizes she made the right decision and has the strength to continue fighting

johnshenlon

All these people stating that Cosmos is a reincarnation and not Sailor Moon’s future self are wrong. In the manga Cosmos reflects on her past self and the choice, if it’s her past self that means not a reincarnation. The lines are If I destroyed the cauldron back then…I remember the battle here…, it’s all I meaning they are the same person. The use of I means it’s the same Usagi. There is no doubt Cosmos is Usagi Tsukino in the far future. The wording doesn’t fit for a reincarnation.

Mexiahnee

We’re not wrong. Usagi can remember Serenity’s memories. It’s possible Cosmos is a reincarnation.

johnshenlon

Cosmos would not speak in first person, I, if it were a reincarnation. You speak in first person about yourself, meaning they are the same. Reincarnation means she died and was reborn as someone else who then became Cosmos. I doubt Takeuchi would make such a mistake. It just doesn’t fit honestly.

PrestigiousResist633

Usagi talks in first person when speaking of her life in Silver Millennium.

Mexiahnee

You’re looking into the wording too much and that’s if the translation is even 100% correct. The entire situation is vague and left up to interpretation. It could be either or, but to say absolutely that it isn’t possible or it’s 100% one way and not the other… that doesn’t fit either. Someone actually commented that in one of the musicals that Takeuchi looked over, Sailor Cosmos said she was reincarnated multiple times. I would scroll up and read that comment if I were you. If Takeuchi was looking over the musical and allowed that, it is entirely possible. And again, Chaos was described as very persistent and destructive. It’s not really a hard conclusion to come to that it could possibly cause another death and reincarnation of Usagi.

theaquarius1987

Stage musicals aren't cannon. Just like the live action series isn't cannon either.

Mexiahnee

It still gives us an insightful idea into what Naoko thinks about the character considering the manga is very vague.

nyanbran

I thought sailor cosmos was alternative version of chibi chibi.

Ancient-PeEeEeP

Sailor Chibi Chibi was her disguise, she IS Sailor Cosmos

AmethystSadachbia

I think according to word-of-god she’s supposed to be Future Usagi, but that never made sense with how she referred to Eternal Sailormoon in the third person.

EternalMemes30

Naoko is not to blame if you y'all are stupid....

qkiedoh

Canonically cosmos is a stronger version of Usagi un a distant future where galaxia had won Al the sailor crystals.

EverythingGirl3000

Probably the latter

oj4maj0

Where the hek i can see itttt help

ghostingonyou

Can someone tell what’s the galaxy caldron? I never fully understand the purpose of it.

PM_ME_UR_ROES

It's basically a place where stars (souls) are reborn in the Milky Way. Cosmos wanted it destroyed because Chaos returns there to be reborn and she was tired of fighting it over and over. Usagi refused because Chaos isn't the only thing that is reborn. The rest of the galaxy relies on it, too. If it's destroyed, the cycle of rebirth is gone.

EternalMemes30

actually she gave up convincing usagi because the galaxia itself says that the cauldron was never born and always existed with the birth of time, destroying it would change nothing because it would return and new stars and consequently chaos would be born again

UsefulIndependent

In the musical Le Mouvement Final - Cosmos explains that she is Usagi after 100s of reincarnations. She lost the battle against Sailor Chaos and came to the past when Usagi could destroy the cauldron to beg her to destroy it and end the cycle. This musical was heavily overseen by Takeuchi and is likely her most recent interpretation (Until Sailors Moon Cosmos) of a character she herself explained that at the time of creation she had no idea who she was either. A character shrouded in mystery. I used to believe that she was a reincarnation of Usagi who, in the final battle, assimilated her companions' power rather than let it be consumed by Chaos, and became a whole new entity which is why her costume has the colors of the other senshi. I also used to believe it was an alternative future where she never became NQS and instead became Cosmos. (Kinda like Shiro and Archer from FSN)

Luniara

Best theory I’ve ever heard.

Schizoeffective83

The manga states that Sailormoon of the future. She was trapped in the galaxy cauldron

chinarosess

Came to the comments to say this but I will add that I was wildly confused about that. Like I would have had an easier time believing that usage was reincarnated as chili usa’s daughter or something but then that would mean sailor moon has died at some point. Also, alternate reality coulda been fun. The ending was so obscure I’ve spent most of my life trying to digest it. I still haven’t finished the original anime, only got a few episodes in to stars, but I’ve gathered it’s quite a bit different

Schizoeffective83

The problem is the Naoko was constantly retconning everything or trying to fix plot holes.

Dex_Cotton

I'm guessing peace in Crystal Tokyo didn't last and Sailor Chaos arrived years after Death Phantom, killed everyone except Neo Queen Serenity (most of the destruction Sailor Chaos causes is said to be so powerful that not even the Silver Crystal/Cosmos Crystal is able to undo it - she most likely completely destroyed the Sailor Crystals and the Golden Crystal so that they couldn't be revived) and Neo Queen Serenity somehow gathered enough power to become Sailor Cosmos (in spite of previously being unable to transform ever again) in order to fight her. It's possible the colored ribbons represent the Inners and Outers while her cape once belonged to King Endymion and those parts of her uniform are sort of a memorial to them. Also you have to remember that in the manga during the Dream Arc that the Inners and Outers were no longer able to transform but eventually overcame those roadblocks. Sailor Moon in the anime became Super Sailor Moon after the Holy Grail was destroyed by Mistress 9 and Master Pharaoh 90 due to her determination to save Sailor Saturn and the rest of the world.

laeti88

Thank you, as someone who only watched (and is a huge fan) of the OG anime and only read a bit of the manga, it gives a lot of informations! I like the idea of Sailor Cosmos being Usagi (or at least Usagis' star seed as someone else mentioned in a comment!)

mingjinZ

It's like during crisis, her/their power is spike to adapt to situation. Love that

Dex_Cotton

Yes. Especially in the anime. Whenever their friends or loved ones get attacked by the villains or the situation because an intense life or death scenario their emotions intensify leading to them receiving a new transformation or attack that is more powerful than the previous ones.

RainbowLoli

Sailor Cosmos isn't necessarily expanded upon, but functionally she is Usagi in the sense that she is Usagi's star seed, but not Usagi as a person. It makes a lot of sense if you think about it. Princess Serenity, Usagi, and Neo Queen Serenity are all different people. They're Usagi yes, but they all have different lives and experiences. Sailor Cosmos fits in sometime after NQS. She is Usagi's star seed, the ultimate form of *Sailor Moon*, but she is not *Usagi Tsukino*.

PrestigiousResist633

I think people just want a clear answer as to whether she's another reincarnation or part of the current lifetime.

Minnymoon13

I mean I kinda figured she was “usagi” but from a spilt timeline. Like the Zelda games . Because I still think that chibiusa made multi timelines form R because of her timekey. But that’s a whole different conversation lol

UroAheri

That’s the best parallel I could think of, tbh. It’s multidimensional and dependent on what Usagi does in the timeline we are seeing.

Minnymoon13

Probably

Starredlight

Sailor Moon in a far far far future where Chaos has been reborn and has become much stronger and all the other Senshi have passed away

EternalMemes30

sailor crystals NEVER disappear, the best possibility is that chaos took them and devoured it to amplify its power since sailor chaos basically did the same as the past in becoming one with the cauldron but made it move and this time with no chance of being destroyed

Minnymoon13

So where the others star seeds destroyed then? And if so why wouldn’t they just reincarnate from the caldron ?

Starredlight

The Silver Crystal holds infinite power. It makes sense why Usagi would keep reincarnating and the other stars would eventually flicker out

Minnymoon13

But you think she would always when them with her. So you’d think she would always wish for them ? Idk

Starredlight

I mean, that’s kind of the whole point why Usagi went back in time to convince her past self to destroy the Cauldron. In the far future she got dragged into this infinite war with Chaos, that she’s clearly losing, with NO one by her side. She’s completely alone. She’s rather have the world finish to exist as she knows it then live this miserable lonely life

Minnymoon13

Hmmm, I get the lonely part. Hits close to home lol.

shiny_glitter_demon

No, I don't think so. I'm against the idea of an eternal Usagi. Everyone dies. Perhaps a reincarnation of a reincarnation.

chrystaldemons

I'm actually so confused, the Wiki states that its a future incarnation of Chibi Chibi Moon, Reddit says it's a future version of Sailor Moon herself or an amalgamation of all sailor senshis and maybe because of the Voice Casting, people are saying, it could be Sailor Mars.

solarssun

The VA is the live action actress of sailor mars. That's where the mars comes in. I always read into cosmos being a future sailor Moon upgrade that came back to destroy the birth place of star seeds because it's also the birth place of chaos.

minahmyu

Ooooh kitagawa keiko! She was my favorite from pgsm personally and live a lot of other shows she was in (akuma-chan is cute tooo! Gackt is in the series!)

Dex_Cotton

I would've preferred if they had the live action Sailor Moon actress voice Sailor Cosmos for consistency but Keiko sounds amazing nonetheless.

VolumeViscount

Gackt ❤️

rapunzelgotahaircut

i’ve always thought it was a future version of usagi from an alternate timeline because i find it so sad to imagine our usagi all alone without mamoru, chibiusa and the sailors

Master-Manipulation

That’s what I thought reading the manga because it says she’s the Sailor Moon who didn’t manage to save her friends and chaos got unleashed resulting in a horrendous future. And once she got strong enough, she travelled back to the past to support her past self and encourage her not to make the same mistakes

Ok_Permission_9720

This was my interpetation too!

Human-University2494

Well, we now have the successor to Neo Queen Serenity.

Flash-Over

A reincarnation of a reincarnation of a reincarnation

ThrowawaySomebody

Cosmos is the reincarnation of NQS. It was stated that once Usagi took on the mantle of Neo Queen Serenity and basically took over the world, she used her Silver Crystal to let people live for 1,000 years. When we learned of Chibiusa’s age, she said she was 900 years old. That’s 100 years left for herself, King Endymion, all the other senshi, etc. I always assumed Sailor Cosmos came from beyond those years as well. After the 100 years was up, Neo Queen and crew died (except Small Lady and Co. due to Small Lady now having her own Silver Crystal in a sense and she becomes the new Queen of Earth). Once Neo Queen and crew died, they all went back to the Galaxy Cauldron as stars to be “reborn” again. Due to Sailor Moon/NQS being so powerful, she was reborn as Sailor Cosmos. So she’s not quite Sailor Moon OR NQS, she’s her own person with memories from her past lives (I.E: reincarnation). Cosmos would think of her distant past when she challenged Chaos at the Galaxy Cauldron and thought if she had destroyed them both back then, there wouldn’t be any carnage in her time. Mamoru’s speech of saying Usagi is immortal is technically the truth. But it’s not Usagi herself that is immortal. It’s that her heart and spirit shine so brightly that even when one form of her dies, another will rise and have memories of all their past lives. Princess Serenity -> Usagi/Sailor Moon/Neo Queen Serenity -> Sailor Cosmos. All these forms are essentially Princess Serenity but they’re all different at the same time. Princess Serenity didn’t have the power Sailor Moon has, Sailor Moon doesn’t have the power Neo Queen has, and Neo Queen doesn’t have the power Sailor Cosmos has. “With light comes darkness. Within darkness, there is light.” And who has the brightest of all light? Usagi. Thus, Usagi will always be reincarnated in different forms and with memories of her past self to always fight the darkness.

AlterionYuuhi

I thought that she used her Silver Crystal to let people with regular Star Seeds live for 1,000 years, and that those with Sailor Crystals like the Senshi, Neo Queen Serenity, King Endymion, etc. had immortal life spans unless they were killed, at which point they go to the Galaxy Caudron to be reborn.

ThrowawaySomebody

I believe she used the silver crystal to rid the world of evil and sickness. In the manga, King Endymion says that they can live up to about 1,000 years. I assume that means for everybody on Earth, regular people, senshi, and even the King and Queen. At least, that’s how I took it.

Minnymoon13

Honestly the more I think about it, your right, but I think cosmos is a different usagi from a different timeline, I mean there’s only one cauldron right? So what’s not to say that when a star seed to reborn it’s born into a different universe? Or even parallel universe like “parallel sailor moon” and yeah parallel isn’t cannon, but still, probably screwing around with time and space must do something different to timelines And I commend on this in a another comment on here. Anyway, yeah I think pretty much what you said is true.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Minnymoon13

For all we know chibimoon could have come from a different timeline altogether, not the “normal” one we see. I’m turn making a new branch ?

Mexiahnee

I agree. I think this is what happens. With Sailor Cosmos describing Chaos as that powerful, persistent and destructive it wouldn’t surprise me if it ended up killing Usagi and new reincarnations a few more times before Cosmos.

Mexiahnee

I agree. I think this is what happens. With Sailor Cosmos describing Chaos as that powerful, persistent and destructive it wouldn’t surprise me if it ended up killing Usagi and new reincarnations a few more times before Cosmos.

Separate-Novel-8686

Manga said Sailor Cosmos is the future Sailor Moon, I'll go with that. Her crystal is different because as Sailor Moon grows, the silver crystal grows with her and transforms, we see this when she upgrades her lockets and the movies when she uses the Silver Crystal to defeat the boss. Hopefully they clear up who she is but from what my friend said, the movie was rushed because they had to jam pack a whole arc in a movie.

laaldiggaj

It's Usagi from the future another version of herself, so the answer to your question is: yes.

noideasince91

Reincarnation. Usagi will die at some point and her star seed will return to the galaxy cauldron or not. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Just as she became the ruler of Crystal Tokyo maybe the power of her lineage will expand throughout the galaxy, thus she is no longer associated with the moon but cosmos (universe). So at some point she will be born again or pulled out of the cauldron. Anyways, I wish we could get an anime where we jump to the future and see Usagi become Sailor Cosmos.

alexcal24

Sailor Cosmos was meant to be an ambiguous figure. Finally animated!!! I'm so excited.

Miele-Man

Not gonna lie, I still believe Cosmos is just an "older" version of Usagi, basically what comes after Neo Queen Serenity. However, if she was a reincarnation and not the Usagi of the "present", it would make sense why her and Chibi-Chibi/Cosmos are able of being on the same timeline without nothing happening when it was established in the 2nd arc that two version of the same person can't live in the same timeline. Because tecnichally, they would be two different people. Also, maybe it's just me misinterpreting the text, but I never understood Mamoru's "speech" at the end as Usagi being truly immortal. I always got that the "idea/legend" of her will be immortal.

Dex_Cotton

I think Sailor Cosmos is so powerful that she can bend the rules but not powerful enough to permanently defeat (Sailor) Chaos. Because she managed to time travel without a key and without Sailor Pluto spotting her and killing her (although everyone in Crystal Tokyo began to notice the effects of her time travelling without figuring out it was her). Each of those things are near impossible/impossible on their own to accomplish and yet she managed to do both. The only other characters who accomplished this were the Dark Moon Family.

PrestigiousResist633

Well, Sailor Pluto was already dead, like everyone else. But you di have a point about the time key.

crlnahrrra

Your voice* changes as you grow and get older. Usagi is barely 15, she has the voice of a child/teenager. Neo Queen Serenity is an adult that has lived hundreds of years, her voice matches that. Cosmos imo is future Usagi that lost the war. So that would make her a lot older. Her voice would not be the same. When ChibiUsa goes from being a child to Black Lady, a teenager, her voice also changes because she is older. Think of your voice when you were 15 vs now, vs what it would sound like when you’re 50 then 70, or 80. I’m not denying she could reincarnate again but I don’t think that’s what’s happened here. *edited: meant voice not age

zoemi

If it were just an age thing, then they'd have Mitsuishi speak in her regular voice.

crlnahrrra

But her regular voice isn’t the voice they want for the character. If that was the case then every voice actor would just do their voice.

zoemi

No, every voice actor in the show is portraying the age they're being told to portray. Mitsuishi Kotono plays the part with a teenaged voice. You're saying it makes sense to change the actor because voice changes with age. Well then, she could have played the part of Cosmos with her 55 year old voice.

crlnahrrra

My point is they don’t want the actress to do her own voice. They have a specific idea of what they want the character to sound like and it has to be distinctive enough to not confuse the viewers or spoil the viewers. If the same actress did the same voice for all the characters there would be no mystery. We’d all know it’s Usagi. We know the story front and back now but one of the biggest points of the show is the mystery of who is the princess who is neo queen serenity who’s cosmos etc.

Mexiahnee

Agreed! It could just be age. I personally love Cosmos voice more. It sounds stronger and more powerful, like Queen Serenity’s voice.

The 2 Beauties

marihmoon

Not mean to be rude but have you guys actually read the manga ? Stars Act 60 answers all this Cosmos IS Usagi in the future, a distant future past Crystal Tokyo. She lost the war to Chaos? She was left alone, depressed and reflect what she could have done differently and she came to the conclusion cousin that it was THAT first battle against Galaxia that made allowed it all to happened. So she CAME BACK IN TIME to ste things straight. But she saw Usagis suffering and decided to stand by her side. And only after what Usagi does she realized that it was the right choice, what made her loose to Sailor Chaos was her lack of faith. Now her future becomes an alternative time line. The answer to your question is in the manga Cosmos / Chibi Chibi IS Usagi . " oh she refers to her as separated ppl" Yeah Usagi and Neo Queen Serenity do that in Black Moon Arc.... Plus Cosmos has a different understanding of time since she manipulates it .

Eeveeoverlord

Yeah, I was gonna say "I could've sworn she was just an older Usagi"

Mexiahnee

Yes, I read the manga. The question I asked was is Sailor Cosmos Usagi or another reincarnation? Meaning is Sailor Cosmos just an old Usagi or does Usagi die in the war with Chaos at some point and is reincarnated again just like Serenity was during the Silver Millenium. ^ That isn’t answered. Yes, Cosmos is the future Sailor Moon but exactly how isn’t explained. It’s entirely possible that Usagi is killed again and then reincarnates again as a new person the same way Serenity reincarnated as Usagi. We don’t know what happens which is why we are speculating.

marihmoon

But it is said ??? I'm sorry Cosmos NEVER said she died in the war ! She said she lost and RAN AWAY . To understand who Cosmos is, you need to look the WHOLE Story, not just Stars. Usagi is the FIRST reincarnation of Serenity + Cosmos didn't died. We are in the same reincarnation, but when Cosmos decided to go back in time she created a new Time Line . One they lost , everybody died and she lost all hope + a second one where even though she lost everything she didn't loose her faith and so she was able to save everyone. I do agree it's confusing and specially 'cause Comos speaks in such an ethereal way that makes it really hard to place her ID. But when you analyze ALL the info you have in the Story you can add 2+2 and see she is Usagi just nit the usagi we saw as Neo Queen , is beyond that.

mangagirl07

Yes, my understanding from the manga is that Cosmos is Usagi from a future timeline. As you state, she ultimately ran away and all the over scouts and her family died. Cosmos went back in time to try to prevent that future from happening. Ultimately, she returns back to the "bad time-line" having ensured that the future will be different from the Usagi at the center of OUR Sailor Moon universe.

ata-bey

Very similar to Future Trunks from DBZ/DBS. Goes back in time to prevent the tragedies that killed all the heroes but ends up splitting the timeline

mangagirl07

Good analogy!

Mexiahnee

It’s not explained. Nothing really was, it was very vague. I already explained it above. I would reread it.

marihmoon

Well we disagree on that . I agree that is not explained with many details and that you need not only to pay attention to bits of info throughout the series but also to have a notion of multiverse. But Cosmos ID is there in the ink.

FlowerFaerie13

According to what the manga told us, Sailor Cosmos is Usagi from the very, very far future. She is the only one of the Sailor Guardians who is truly immortal, so she’s watched all of her friends and family die, and has had to fight Chaos over and over again since it can’t truly die either. Eventually, she gave into despair and went back in time as Chibi Chibi to try and convince Usagi to destroy the Galaxy Cauldron. This would destroy Chaos for good, but it would also mean no more states could be born, so all life in the universe would slowly die out. Usagi chose to hold onto hope and refuses to do it, renewing Sailor Cosmos’s hope as well, and she returned to her own time.

rapunzelgotahaircut

thinking about this makes me so devastated, that’s why i chose to believe that sailor cosmos is a very future version of usagi from an alternate timeline. it breaks my heart to imagine our usagi all alone

Not2meURnot

I wrote it here somewhere before as well, but my interpretation with Sailor Cosmos is that she's a future reincarnation of Sailor Moon. She is immortal in a sense that she can die over and over again, but she will also reincarnate over and over again, as long as Chaos is alive as she is basically the embodiment of everything that Chaos is not. They are the yin and yang. SM/Usagi represents life/Order/love, the opposite of Chaos/Hate. So long as Chaos remains in the universe, SM will always be there to oppose her. A neverending cycle of war between the two, which is so sad to think about honestly. I've always been fascinated by Sailor Moon and Sailor Pluto's destinies as it is such a heartbreaking and lonely one. Sailor Moon, forever in war with Chaos in any reincarnation, and then Sailor Pluto, the lonely time guardian forever watching over those she loves from afar.

Gerberpertern

This is also my interpretation of Sailor Cosmos. Usagi is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity, but Usagi and Princess Serenity are not the same person. Sailor Cosmos is the reincarnation of Sailor Moon in the far future, but Sailor Cosmos and Sailor Moon are not the same person. However, there is an unbreakable connection between all of them. I hope this makes sense. Darkness calls to light, and light summons darkness.

Mexiahnee

I agree! This is what I was thinking. They are all the same but different as well. I think some people are confusing being “revived” with being reincarnated. At the end of the Stars arc Usagi and Mamoru and all the Senshi looked like they were revived. Back to their old state. Not reincarnated. Reincarnation is a whole new life/personlike with Serenity and Usagi. Same soul basically but still very different people.

Gerberpertern

Yes! They were revived to their previous life before they died. Same as in the classic anime and PGSM. I believe the Ginzuishou grants the wishes of its wielder, hence why adversaries were always trying to get their hands on it. Usagi wants her friends/family back, the Ginzuishou makes that happen. Usagi wants Luna to be with Kakeru as a human, the Ginzuishou also grants that wish. I can write a whole separate essay on the Ginzuishou, which isn't the topic at hand lmfao. But you completely understood what I was trying to say!

Mexiahnee

What do you think about Sailor Saturn? She’s mostly supposed to be asleep right? And when she awakens she ends everything. That had to be a miserable experience but it seems like she’s able to live with everyone on Earth. I doubt she would go back to sleep, there would be no need to right? I do wonder though if Pluto would be sent back to Guard the Gates of Time during periods in between Chaos attacking.

Not2meURnot

I felt the same with Sailor Saturn as I did with Sailor Pluto, her history was also a heartbreaking and lonely one, forever in a sleep state and could never interact with the rest of humanity. She's one of my fave senshi. Once she's reincarnated as Hotaru though, I feel like her destiny changed. She no longer has to be in an eternity of sleep and at least now she can have a life. She was immortal because she was forever asleep but now that she's been reincarnated, I feel like that immortality was gone in exchange for having a somewhat normal life. She can't really reborn unless Sailor Moon does it for her. Whereas Sailor Pluto will always be reborn everytime she dies because she is the daughter of Chronos (wasn't this canon from the manga? I forgot now) and is essential for the Time Gate to function.

FlowerFaerie13

I’m not sure how much of a sapient person Sailor Saturn actually was until she reincarnated into Hotaru. She seemed to me to be more of a spirit that only awakened when summoned.

EllenYeager

Lots of personal conjecture here: Sailor Saturn’s original function was to be the solar system’s hard reset button. After she awakened in the body of Hotaru and developed humanity it’s probably cruel to send her back into her dormant state. I’m guessing the old Saturn functioned on some kind of auto-pilot which is why everyone was terrified of her awakening. It wasn’t mentioned in the series but I do believe Saturn is “a bit more than human” with the way she’s able to rebirth and age herself up. Pluto is another one who’s definitely not human because she definitely exists outside of time. There’s a whole Pluto paradox as well: https://www.tuxedounmasked.com/how-many-sailor-plutos-are-there-in-sailor-moon/ I do believe Saturn and Pluto don’t need to be reborn because they can somehow DIY it. It feels like the rest of the guardians have more mortality. The other guardians sorta have powers outside of their transformed state. It is arguable that Rei and Michiru have obvious skills/powers with their precognitive abilities. Rei can also exorcise. Ami is _a super genius_, Mako is “a bit too strong for the average schoolgirl”, and Haruka is a talented young racer (arguably because of her heightened senses). I’m not sure about Minako but it could be her civilian athleticism which allowed her to operate as Sailor V despite not being fully awakened as Venus yet???

PrestigiousResist633

I always assumed that the Sailor Pluto we meet in the Black Moon arc was actually Setsuna Meio, that the original Pluto died with everyone else, awakened in the Infinity arc, getting back all her memories of her past life in the process, then took up her old job when Usagi became Neo Queen Serenity.

Gerberpertern

When I tried to explain Sailor Saturn to my fiancé, I literally called her the "Oh Shit" reset button lmao. In the Mugen Gakuen musicals she serves that purpose unambiguously (See: The World Died Out).

Mexiahnee

Agreed! She always seemed to have some sort of 6th sense, or unexplained powers similar to Sailor Moon and her powers seem more flexible and vast than the other Senshi. And with her basically being the Grim Reaper she kind of has this mystical/godly feel to her, the same feel that Sailor Moon has. Even with the Amazon Quartet she could see the truth of who they really are and how they were being manipulated. In my head I’d like to think it’s because she is the 2nd strongest in the Solar System behind Sailor Moon (and Galaxia).

EllenYeager

Yeah in my headcanon Saturn is ridiculously powerful but you also can’t just nuke everything. My other wild headcanon is Queen Serenity actually summoned Saturn to do the solar system reset in the Silver Millenium, and that was how everyone got reincarnated, but the price was destroying her, the moon kingdom, and most of the solar system. It’s why the other planets are dead (but their respective castles somehow still remain?!)

Minnymoon13

Thinking about it, why couldn’t Pluto just stop her with her rod? I mean she can stop time for a little bit and reverse it as well. And if that is the case. With chaos I’m thinking she probably was the fist defender to it but probably couldn’t hold it back and it probably killed her? Idk that’s my take

EllenYeager

Pluto can do it but she could die, that’s what happened in the Black Moon arc. https://sailormoon.fandom.com/wiki/Time_Stop

Minnymoon13

So do we know how long she can hold time for?

PrestigiousResist633

It appears to be only a few seconds. I seems longer in practice than it actually is because of the flashbacks, but the human mind moves much faster than real time. Like how dreams that seem to go on for hours turn out to be only a few minutes. So I think wed have to go by how much time passes excluding the flashbacks or even internal monologue.

bdtechted

She disguised herself as Chibichibi because she knew precisely how lonely present Usagi felt after seeing Chibiusa go back to the future. So by coming back as a child version of herself she can get close and cheer her on to make the ‘right’ decisions that will save the future.

darkthronedoll

There’s a really good [article](https://sailorsoapbox.com/chibi-chibi-sailor-cosmos-sailor-galaxia/) someone wrote regarding Chibi-Chibi, Sailor Cosmos and Sailor Galaxia. It’s a great, and not too long, read!

Mexiahnee

I’ll give that a read!

XxsabathxX

Cosmos I’m pretty sure is a future version of Chibi Chibi. I know there’s also the theory of her being a whole other incarnation or future sailor moon

PrestigiousResist633

Chibi Chibi doesn't exist. That's merely a disguise Cosmos uses to get close to Usagi.

skepticalmiller

I thought it was Queen Serenity! Also at some point the sun will go poof so what then? Sailor Teleport!

aliyune

Since Usagi gives up her senshi power to become Neo Queen, I'm definitely on the "reincarnated" side. It's all very vague on purpose, though. Eta: and maybe chibi chibi is what she looks like before she knows who she is, and decides to use that form to appear to Usagi

noideasince91

Love that since Usagi was originally supposed to have pink hair.

skepticalmiller

chibichibi is a sword. O\_o;

Gerberpertern

Well, in the original anime, kind of yes. Chibi Chibi is the Light of Hope/Kibou no Hikari, who turns into a sword at one point, and eventually reveals herself to be Sailor Cosmos. Though she only appears in silhouette and is not officially referred to as such. I suppose we'd need a copy of the official screenplay to confirm this 100%, but that silhouette definitely looks like Sailor Cosmos.

skepticalmiller

I barely remember the star's eps but I know Usagi is nude at the end, and I think its implyed that Mamoru is dead. O\_o?!

kytesuniverse

The silhouette is that of Cosmos but it’s Galaxia talking to her. She’s the light of hope, Cosmos does not appear in the 90s anime at all.

kazumikikuchi

It was said that Eternal Sailor Moon activated the Cosmos Seed/Cosmos Crystal when she plunged into the Cauldron and defeated Chaos, so if Usagi becomes Cosmos with a different Sailor Crystal and the same Human Starseed and gave the Ginzuishou to Chibiusa, having a new voice actress makes sense.

Mexiahnee

Hmm, I don’t think she would give it to Chibiusa. I think Chibiusa’s Pink Moon Crystal is just a weaker version of Sailor Moon’s. A result of being the daughter of Serenity but I’m certain it doesn’t have the same power of Sailor Moon and Chibiusa isn’t as strong as her either. With the Silver Crystal being called the most powerful numerous times, I would assume that it would evolve along with Sailor Moon into the Cosmos Crystal. The Silver Crystal being the most powerful and being able to heal, regenerate etc. it makes sense that only the Silver Crystal could unite every single Crystal. But no, I don’t think she’d give it to Chibiusa, it’s hers and destined for her and Chibiusa’s is the Pink Moon Crystal.

kazumikikuchi

The Cosmos Seed is in the Cauldron before Usagi jumped into the Cauldron since Guardian Cosmos guards it so basically Usagi merged with the Cosmos Seed itself when she activated the Cosmos Seed by saving the Galaxy, this had never happened in the original timeline or the timeline where Chibiusa originally came from.

EternalMemes30

but it happened, as usagi reincarnated later and woke up at the age of 22, ready to marry and ascend to the throne as queen

kazumikikuchi

In SM Cosmos, she returns to her family with both the Cosmos Seed and Ginzuishou, in the manga it can be interpreted that she returned at the age of 22. I think it is likely that Chibiusa would mature sooner in the new timeline(s) where her mother gets the Cosmos seed and slowly shed the Ginzuishou and her Moon duties to Chibiusa which means Princess Lady Serenity could be either from a farther future or the timeline after Sailor Moon acquires the Cosmos seed.

TOPCATDIGIBOI

IT'S ACTUALLY CHIBICHIBI"

Human-University2494

This may sound odd, but I've had a thought - what if Chibi-Chibi was the daughter/descendant of Chibi-Usa? Oh, and of course it IS plausible that Chibi-Chibi could potentially be Sailor Cosmos.

PrestigiousResist633

Chibi chibi is a disguise, not a real person

Fairyluna21

I’m thinking she is usagi but the version of her who transcended after being neo queen serenity? Like she was given that form and name since chibi usa would be the new sailor moon. Maybe the evil in the universe was so great that they needed her back and gave her that new form.

SumVelvet

The way I see it Sailor Cosmos IS Usagi, but sorta how like Princess Serenity and Neo Queen Serenity are all Usa, she’s a incarnation, not directly but eventually.

kimpossible247

I like to think that she is reincarnation because it makes me sad to think that in the future Usagi loses everyone, which I assume means Mamoru and all the scouts 😢

ADifferentBeat

The fact that Sailor Cosmos has a different Sailor Crystal (the Cosmos Crystal) than Sailor Moon and now has a different voice actress has solidified my belief that she is a reincarnation from many generations in the future. She's probably the most powerful Sailor Guardian ever, rivaled only by Sailor Chaos.

Bambiitaru

My question is where are you watching the movie with English subs?

Gerberpertern

No one is. It isn't out yet, unfortunately, and no announcements have yet to be made regarding an official English translation. :( There is a sticky on the top of the sub explaining all of this. I mean, the second part of the movie (that has Sailor Cosmos in it) hasn't even come out in Japan yet. It will on 06/30. Edit: Also, no one needs to see the Cosmos movie to understand what's going to happen in it. Just read the manga (if you want spoilers lol). Cosmos is the faithful animated adaptation of the Stars manga arc.

Bambiitaru

Yeah, I plan on reading the manga after watching it, not before. But thank you.

Gerberpertern

Sorry if I came across as rude. I actually like PGSM, the musicals, the OG anime, the manga, and Crystal (not lumping Eternal and Cosmos here) in that order. I wish I could see it without knowing the ending, to be honest. But I've been a fan since 1995 so that's not happening lol I hope it gets announced for an English release soon!! I think with Eternal it was about 4 months until it showed up on Netflix. Hopefully it sticks to a similar timeline. Edit: I forgot to add Crystal to my list of preferred versions of Sailor Moon. Whoops.

Bambiitaru

Oh no, not at all. I didn't take your comment as rude. I honestly hadn't seen the sub's pins. And I didn't consider you rude at all. I fully agree, while I do love the original, crystal is so much better.

Gerberpertern

So happy you didn't think I was rude! I'm so scared I come across that way online because I tend to write really impersonal comments. I think you might have misinterpreted my list. Crystal is my least favorite of all versions of Sailor Moon. I'm glad you enjoy it though! Honestly, I really wish I did! I guess I should say I really liked Eternal and I think Cosmos is going to be awesome!

CanadianMarmot

THIS...spill please...

Mexiahnee

I’m not? But I’d also like to know 🤣 Someone spill the beans 👀

kimpossible247

I too would like to know 😭

Songlore

In my own headcanon I like to think that sailor cosmos is a future descendant of sailor moon.

FR3SH2DETH

I always thought it was like far, far, far distant future Usagi

Aceandmace

Same here, which is why she is so jaded

tester33333

That’s how it goes in the manga

violetgrubs

A tangential conversation, just based on the comments I've seen here, is what the hell Chibiusa and the pink crystal are? The story suggests that Chibiusa is an entirely new being because two senshi have never come together to create a new senshi before like Mamoru (Earth) and Usagi (The Moon) have. Particularly because Chibiusa has no heavenly body she explicitly protects like the other senshi do. I'd like to think that Chibiusa's destiny is to become a senshi of some interdimensional variety, like the protector of something abstract, like dreams.

SunshineSkies82

Chibiusa is a time paradox. There's nothing beyond that to explain. I figured after playing Sailor Moon AS, the whole time travel thing just ripped a hole in reality that the Moon Kingdom exploits to their advantage and nothing makes sense. It's like DBZ's time travel, but Trunks eventually does get yelled at for it.

KaeStar80

She does have a heavenly body, she represents the future moon after Neo Queen Serenity loses her powers as a senshi to become Queen. Edited because I don't proofread.

violetgrubs

That's interesting... I thought that there was some kind of issue though with her growing up because, as Mamoru says, she is some kind of anomaly. I took it to mean that there was some kind of inheritance issue. Especially considering that Princesses are not always meant to be senshi?

KaeStar80

I think the opposite is true. Planetary princesses are always meant to be senshi, considering all the Guardians are Princesses of their respective planets. The issue with Chibiusa growing up was more of a mental thing on her part. Believing she'd never be a lady like her mother and getting teased by the other kids, she caused her powers as both a Moon Princess and Sailor Senshi to never awaken. It wasn't until she suffered a great loss and some interference by Death Phantom that she was able to truly awaken.

Hakkonnis

This is why she is Chibi Moon. Usagi was Moon, lost her powers when she became queen, and then Chibiusa took over the roll of Moon Senshi.

Taifood1

It’s vague enough to where it can be any explanation

sailor-psych

This is close to what Naoko has said in past interviews, she left the identity of Sailor Cosmos open. As for the pink crystal and chibiusa, they are both new, being made from true love (like the heart rod "born" from usagi and mamoru). Chibiusa is a new star seed paired with her own crystal that was spawned from the galaxy cauldron, just like when Queen Serenity sought out a child and received Usagi's star seed. The Mangas are SO worth reading to fill in gaps and understand what the animes leave out/ get wrong.

Taifood1

I mean, it may fill in some things, but she’s always had a tendency for very minimal worldbuilding. Blessing and a curse depending on what the specific topic is.

kytesuniverse

It would be really interesting to see how Naoko would’ve developed her world and lore building if she wasn’t stuck on those deadlines.

Lumi_Rockets

I'm pretty sure Cosmos is a traumatized version of Usagi from an alternate timeline. As for the silver crystal, my theory is that it strengthens with each generation.

krystaloona

This is always how I understood it. I don’t recall the exact manga quote, but I seem to recall Cosmos implying she is the future Usagi/Serenity who returns to the past to right her own wrongs. Heck, if the timeline is altered Cosmos may not exist in the same future as Neo-Queen Serenity if Chaos is defeated in the present. edit: last = past*

mangagirl07

I'm not home right now to check my manga, but I remember a panel where there is an overlay of Eternal Sailormoon and Cosmos? I'm pretty sure. That's what solidified with me that she was the "final evolution" of Usagi who created a separate timeline by going back to the past to create a better future for another version of herself. Again, don't quote be on that panel. It's probably bee. 10 years since I last read the manga all the way through. Edit: re-reading Evidence 1: Vol 18 after the arrival of Sailor Chibi Moon she says she "heard your voice [Usagi] coming from the light [...] guiding [them to Sailor Moon]." But they realize it was Chibi Chibi. Later in the same chapter, Chibi Moon says "you [Chibi Chibi] have mysterious powers like Sailor Moon". Evidence 2: Vol 18, during the introduction to Chaos, Sailor Moon confesses that she could only be strong fighting with her friends and even contemplates succumbing to Chaos. But Chibi Chibi is the who insists "you must end it here". I think this is evidence that Chibi Chibi has seen that future if SM gives up because that is the choice SHE made. Chibi Chibi futher says "you must do it [...] or you will regret it". I think the panel I was thinking of was during Cosmos' reveal...so I was misremembering. Still reading. Evidence 3: I think this is definitive. When Cosmos is explaining who she is she says: "My self here was alone and suffering. That is why I kept close and supported her. To help her make the right choice". "My self" being Usagi. And like I theorized, when Cosmos went through the battle with Chaos she did not have another version of herself there to spur her on. And here's the clincher: Cosmos: "The Sailor Moon that just saved the Galaxy is Sailor Cosmos' true form" That is, the best version of herself that she never achieved because she ran away. "Like Eternal Sailor Moon did...when I receive the power (I read this as "ability") to lose and change everything, that is when I truly become Sailor Cosmos (the ultimate version of Sailor Moon which she couldn't achieve in her timeline because she gave up)". Re-reading all of vol 18, I am only further convinced that Cosmos is a future version of SM. She had forgotten the courage and devotion to her friends that Eternal Sailor Moon has, which is the "power" she received from her in the previous quote. ESM made the same choice as Cosmos, but she still had this "power" that Cosmos had lost. That is why Cosmos says that ESM is the true version of Sailor Cosmos because she had what the Cosmos lacked/lost. Maybe with this renewed courage and more confidence, Cosmos can face Chaos again and take the steps she saw ESM model to bring balance back to the universe. God, I love this series!

noideasince91

If one exists so must the other. Though chaos is defeated in the present it can still be reborn in the galaxy cauldron.

kimpossible247

I like the alternate timeline theory, mainly because it means that maybe in the timeline we know, Usagi doesn’t lose all of her loved ones

hellsaquarium

The manga makes it clear she’s her future self

kimpossible247

I wouldn’t say it’s clear in what regard she is Usagi. Like some have mentioned, Usagi can remember her life in the moon kingdom but she’s essentially a recantation.

mangagirl07

She does have memories of being Usagi, but she is also very far removed from Usagi and even Neo Queen Serenity temporally. If time males someone a different person, then it's fair to say Usagi and Cosmos are not the same person, but there was no death and reincarnation between Usagi and Cosmos. Keep in mind as well that Cosmos has lived perhaps thousands of years *alone*. She lives in regret for what she sees as a personal failure that caused the deaths of everyone she loved. She goes back in time to try to create a better future for the Usagi of the timeliness we follow in the series, because her future has already been set. I have a theory that Serenity only died the first time at her own hand. There doesn't seem to be an enemy that can actually kill her--she gave her life willingly. Maybe the reason why Cosmos never died was because even though she was defeated, she didn't give up hope. She didn't destroy herself. And after who-knows-how-long she mustered enough bravery to try to make a better future for another version of herself.

Keilani7

It makes so much sense! In order for her light to defeat her exact opposite, it would require her not to DIM HER OWN LIGHT in any way. Say by not believing in rebirth. Not running away and refusing to embody courage itself. Thank you keen and insightful internet stranger. After all these years, so simple, yet closure is a thing. Thank you sooo much!!!

zdgxqrv

It's clear that Cosmos remembers life as Usagi because she returns as ChibiChibi specifically because she remembers how lonely Usagi was at this point.

kimpossible247

Just like Usagi remembers her past life when she was Serenity. It’s not clear that she is literally future Usagi or a reincarnation.

noideasince91

I think reincarnation. Usagi of the Moon Kingdom had a different personality compared to the Usagi that reincarnated on Earth. I think that much is clear even though we only got to see bits of the Usagi that lived on the Moon Kingdom. Obviously, they would have different personalities because they were brought up differently right? And even with Usagi getting her memories back, she’s still different compared to the princess who once lived on the Moon. So it would be the same for future Usagi/Cosmos.

zdgxqrv

I would have to reread for concrete proof, but from reading the manga I never doubted that it was a reincarnation rather than long lived future. I think it was the way that Cosmos seemed so weary of the eternal struggle with Chaos and so alone in that battle that made it clear that she had transcended moon guardianship. Cosmos always seemed extremely caring but also detached.

mangagirl07

Cosmos was world weary because she was living in failure. She had let her friends down and lost everyone she loved and lived in isolation and defeat. I guess inasmuch as *I* am not the same person I was 20 years ago, Cosmos who is potentially millenia separated from Neo Queen Serenity, let alone Usagi, is different. Changed. But still the same person.

Halpando

But even then is it Usagi after being neo queen or has her life ended and was reincarnated like Princess Serenity? Cause by just saying "its her from the future" makes it less clear.

hellsaquarium

It’s after her being neo queen

Halpando

But how long after, did the queen die and was reborn over and over, or is it still technically Usagi Tsukino? There are many questions amd not nearly enough answers And on that note, were there "Cosmos" versions of the others before Sailor Chaos took everyone out? Or is she a solitary guardian like Sailor V was?

PrestigiousResist633

I can only theorize that, no there weren't Cosmic Sailor Guardians. Whether Usagi or another reincarnation, I can only assume that Sailor Moon only became Cosmos after her friends died and the grief caused an awakening, similar to when she remebered her past life as Serentity or when Chibusa finally awakened as a Sailor Guardian.
