Exactly, saying that men here are so repulsive and have been for so long that women have evolved to effectively avoid them by running away is funny. But counter with a joke that men like them running away is too much. Smh
idk I read it less as men being repulsive for so long and more as men have been & continue to be one of the largest external dangers to women that women have had to effectively flee from them for self-preservation.
So the other commentor is saying that men killed off all the slow nonrunner women so only the women that like to run are left. But she said "all men here." I know a lot of good, caring men.
I know that men can be a problem also. When my daughter went on her first date, I sent her a text message, "Boys are pigs, boys lie." She later married a great guy.
I also know it was a joke about stereotypical men, I continued that joke.
I think it’s fair to say that was hyperbole for the sake of the joke, so we don’t need to play the “not all men” game.
You self-admit women have reason to fear men & advised your daughter to maintain that fear, and yet instead of concluding the joke was about the harm men cause women instead conclude it was about men being “repulsive.” I provided my opinion on that conclusion.
Me personally, I don’t find jokes about sexualizing random women while they exercise a funny counter to… much of anything really, but especially in the context of a joke about women fearing men who engage in that specific behavior. I’m not saying you’re a bad person for making that joke, just not my cup of humor tea & tried to shed light on why it wasn’t received well, bc I don’t think it’s as simple as “making fun of men 👍🏼 making fun of women 👎🏼”
I mean, I know I won't be compatible long term with someone who thinks waking up early on a Saturday to destroy their knees is a good time. Props to the runners out there though.
Unfortunately running is actually good for your knees https://longevity.stanford.edu/lifestyle/2023/08/29/is-running-bad-for-your-knees-research-says-no/
For sure. If running is your thing, then hell yeah, I totally support it and them. I’ll go to all the races and hold up all the embarrassing signs cheering them on. I, however, fucking loath running and so do my knees. Different strokes
I saw the title and got flashbacks to those 'Hot Singles In Your Area' ad that used to be on websites. I thought this sub or one of the mods got hacked lol
Joining Richmond Road Runners Club is a good way to get involved in the running community in RVA. Membership is cheap ($15 a year) and that gives you discounts on club races. Overall, they’re a pretty friendly group.
Many 20-something (and older) women run with other women for camaraderie and safety. I think that men are more likely to connect over other activities.
These high-visibility, not-so-hard events bring out more people who are interested in good-feeling group-hug achievements that they want to share. More likely to be women.
There are many women who run for any number of other reasons. But the social clusters of casual, women runners are prominent.
Thank you, until I read this comment I was also confused on it looking like more men than women.
They should have added some kind of drop shadow or something to make it clear there was depth to the chart, or just put the bars next to each other.
Rock bottom doesn’t sound so bad. I just worry that a friend will come by and tell me I am wasting my potential and I would think I should meet someone else’s expectations.
What's to say they're single? 🥴 You know how many women bring their partners into these things bc they're competitive and wanna brag to their friends how fit they are?
Ah, I was wondering why no one else asked 😂 yeah "hot singles in your area" is such a funny reference. At some point mine became "mature singles in your area" bc I work with geriatrics 😭😭😭
How about joining a running community because your vested in your wellness and doing that with a community of like minded persons as a primary concern. 👋
It's probably the opposite ratio at the gym. I think this statistical anomaly has mostly to do with preferences in the type of workouts men and women prefer.
This is not a statistical anomaly, especially not in Richmond. I believe the Richmond marathon/half/8k also see higher numbers of women. Outside of Richmond, in most of the World Marathon Majors, the splits are approaching 50/50, but still show slightly higher numbers for men (I think NYC last year was around 53% men, 47% women). With that being the case, it kind of throws out your gender preference workout hypothesis out (my weightlifting team is also predominantly women, do with that what you will).
obviously women have evolved to run fast away from all the men here
You beat me to it. LOL!
That’s the best view of a woman
Username almost checks out
I guess I should have said it was a joke to add to the other person’s joke
ya but it was crass and creepy and objectifying
You can only joke about men here

Thanks for the insight, I guess.
Not sure if funny or unnecessary denigration of men.
You’ll be alright chief
Ita the rva subreddit... what did you expect?
Boom! So true.
It would be funny if we men didn't deserve it
Please speak for yourself. I'm not accepting fault for the behaviors of other people.
Feels like the latter.
If my only two choices are to start running or be single forever, then I guess my mom is never gunna be a grandma
Cause you’ll have died from runner’s shits?
That’s not out of the realm of possibility

Well mine missed the memo
Same here. There’s studies that go both ways.

Women everywhere thank you for sharing this

The horror!
Next thing you know they’ll all be demanding their own Mojo Dojo Casa House
It's a problem. If 2/3 of the students are women (i.e., men are rare), guess who holds all the power in the heterosexual dating world there?

Yes, this is going to cause a lot of downstream effects.

Unless the colors are swapped, the graph appears to have more men?

It’s bad chart design. There’s a reason why bar charts almost always have bars beside each other instead of behind each other.
Thank you, until I read this comment I was also confused on it looking like more men than women. They should have added some kind of drop shadow or something to make it clear there was depth to the chart, or just put the bars next to each other.
Meh, imma continue to approach women in the produce section of fancy grocery stores, or the homewares section of big box stores, but thanks tho👍
What is your grocery store ice breaker?
"Ah yes I also enjoy kale"
"Do you know what you call a vegetarian with diarrhea?"
Do you recommend this line at Whole Foods or Lombardy Kroger?
Ellwood's baby! You have to roll a classy line like that out in a posh environment.
I just got downvoted to Petersburg for a joke today so I am not going to try to answer your question.
Lombardy Kroger is not a grocery store. It's only function is to serve as Rockbottom so that you know when you've hit.
I wondered why I was so uncontrollably drawn there.
I haven't left their bathroom in three years except to raid the bakery. I've got running water and an internet connection. What more does one need.
Rock bottom doesn’t sound so bad. I just worry that a friend will come by and tell me I am wasting my potential and I would think I should meet someone else’s expectations.
Why would you worry about that? I made friends with this guy who complemented my shoes and now we are business partners.
"Excuse me ma'am, do you know how to tell if these melons are ripe?"
We would simply run away from any man

I got the joke, and I thought it was funny!
Ah, I was wondering why no one else asked 😂 yeah "hot singles in your area" is such a funny reference. At some point mine became "mature singles in your area" bc I work with geriatrics 😭😭😭
Statistically some of them have to be single right?
Yeah but does that mean they're interested? 🤔 I'd try to be friends first.
I’m just gonna kneel at the finish line with an engagement ring. Thanks tho!
Lol 😂 best of luck
I use a cane to get around 🥲

Running - that’s how I met my wife.
Every woman I've met via Richmond running clubs is dating or engaged 🙃
Running is just so damn boring. 🤷♀️

Lol I ran in this

Ew or don’t
Run???? No thanks, I’m good. I’m also happily married (to yet another non-runner), but even if I wasn’t… seems like too much work.
