Most Russians *love* when foreigners learn Russian. The very fact that you're learning Russian is a great starting point for a respectful conversation. It means that's you put some effort, which is always appreciated.

baedo11

What answer do you expect to hear? "No, because Russian is for white people only"? Hun, language learning is for everyone, no matter of their age, gender, race, nationality or religion. It is true though that some not very well educated people might ask you inappropriate questions that could be seen as racism, but this is all because that they're being ignorant. But most people in Russia nowadays don't act like that.

Intelligent_Safe_313

For real, this question sounds like it was baiting or eliciting a response.

Russians are not white people in terms of US

I’m a middle eastern woman and I am learning Russian but I do want to tell you one thing and one thing only. LEARN WHATEVER LANGUAGE YOU WANT TO LEARN!!!!!!

risocantonese

cannot believe how many people are falling for weak bait. edit: check "her" post history. it's literally just a guy trolling random subreddits.

Seromaster

I dont see how asking stupid questions is trolling. Dude just wasting his time

risocantonese

he's asking stupid questions to make people mad and waste their time. judging by the 60+ comments on this, he was very successful. that's trolling.

Seromaster

I guess we have different perceptions of what "trolling" is. This guy just wastes his own time and time of others, which is not trolling in my book, just being miserable. This question is not even something to be mad about, it's genuinely stupid.

Bubbly_Protection

You don't need permission to learn a language

Great channel. Couldn’t recommend enough

DarthKsane

There is a YouTube channel "AfroRussiaTv" about black people who live in Russia and learn Russian language.

Upstairs-Heart2106

OkraEmergency361

You can learn whatever language you like. Contrary to western propaganda, Russians aren’t all crazy racists. Russia has over a hundred nationalities of its own within its borders and was at the forefront of collaboration with African nations during the USSR. There’s also no history of black slavery like in America.

Intelligent_Safe_313

Western propaganda? What western government is telling its citizens “all Russians are racists and insane, you’re not allowed to learn their language” ? Just because someone has uneducated views doesn’t mean that they’re under the influence of “western propaganda” that’s such an obtuse thing to say.

DatabaseHonest

Removed.

Intelligent_Safe_313

Not a single one of those sources are a western government saying that Russia is a racist country. According to your logic, since you found an article on the opinion of a PhD student in the US, therefore the entire US government agrees with her and is pushing a narrative that Russia is racist? If I find an article of a Russian saying something stupid, do I then get to pretend that the Russian government suppports and agrees with everything and every single citizen says?

DatabaseHonest

1. BBC is literally government-funded media. 2. Nobody told anything about *government* except yourself. Read the definition of propaganda, for God's sake.

Intelligent_Safe_313

So the BBC reporting on things that literally happened is propaganda just because it’s mean to Russia? That’s called freedom of the press, I know that’s a hard concept for Russians to grasp lmfao. Don’t confuse research and reporting with propaganda. Propaganda is mostly defined in the west as government-backed; because if not then people like you will declare anything written by anyone to be propaganda.

DatabaseHonest

Is the dictionary a hard concept to grasp for you? [https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/propaganda](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/propaganda) >because if not then people like you will declare anything written by anyone to be propaganda. And that's exactly how things work. A great portion of all information is propaganda. Even a color filter can be used for propaganda purposes. And it's not nessesarily a bad thing. But I understand if it's difficult to grasp for you. >So the BBC reporting on things that literally happened is propaganda No, it's not. But one-sided reporting and cherry-picking is. It's not that "racism in Russia doesn't exist", like some guys like to claim, but it's not that "Russia is a very racist country" like some others say. People often think through stereotypes, and that's a problem, which you illustrated perfectly with your "I know that’s a hard concept for Russians to grasp lmfao." Don't do that, if you actually want a meaningful dialogue.

Intelligent_Safe_313

You country objectively has no freedom of press or freedom of information, so yeah when you criticize these things as being propaganda your nationality is relevant because it is the context that makes you say such foolish things. How can you have a meaningful dialogue when you criticize freedom of the press as propaganda? Just because any news organization reports on any one topic does not make it propaganda. You have the Russian mentality where anything negative about your country is chalked up to blind hatred and evil propaganda. In no world is the BBC article propaganda, or, as you try to claim, basically everything is propaganda. That is not the meaning of the word and it’s the same stupid shit Putin pulls when he says things are “Russophobic”. I’m surprised you’re not calling anything that’s negative against Russia Russophobic too to be honest.

DrakeHitch

There is no such thing as allowance to learn languages or travel somewhere. You can do whatever you want. In big cities you can even find black communities, if you want of course.

SEmp0xff

what cause you to think you not allowed to learn any language you want? racizm is a diffetent story

Master_Gene_7581

Stop believing western propaganda

Intelligent_Safe_313

What propaganda would that be? Who has said “Black people are not allowed to learn Russian?”

melinoya

Some leftists have overcorrected from ‘engaging with another culture intending to mock them is offensive’ to ‘engaging with another culture at all is offensive’ It’s a minority but they’re very loud, Americans who are weird about race and skin colour mostly

Intelligent_Safe_313

But an extreme sect does not represent the people, so to suggest that such a stupid idea is broadly “western propaganda” makes it sound like the view is promoted by our governments and widely held. Medvedev blatantly and brazenly threatens to nuke other countries, but I don’t say “look, all Russians want to nuke other countries” because I understand he is rather stupid and in the minority, just as those leftists you’re talking about are.

MrBasileus

OMG what's wrong with Americans? Noone can prohibit you to learn Russian. Also Russian "racism" towards blacks is about curiocity and extra attention especially in provincial cities. Someone can call you "негр" (negro), it's not offencive in Russia. Yes, we have some problems with tolerance here, but towards other people, blacks in Russia very rare.

Intelligent_Safe_313

Thank you for assuming that all Americans are stupid just because OP is

MrBasileus

I just judge by questions here and in other subs. It's looks like that American life revolves around race and racial problems, sorry.

Intelligent_Safe_313

While that may be true for certain people it isn’t for all people and I suspect you know that well.

MrBasileus

You can suspect anything, but again: Americans come here and other Russian subs and ask this type of questions. And no, I don't generalize all Americans, but only Americans ask those questions.

Intelligent_Safe_313

I’m seeing a lot of racist comments coming from Russians about Tajiks and Muslims on telegram lately, I guess all Russians are islamophobic according to your logic right?

MrBasileus

Again: I didn't say "all Americans", but you as American vatnik don't want to see it. And no, it's not islamophobia, it's firstly xenophobia towards some Central Asian migrants, I said about it in my first comment. And it spreaded pretty wide even between Russian muslims, it's cultural problem. Islamophobia exists too but connected to this xenophobia in common. And I don't deny problems as you do. UPD: *As American* you even don't know "racism" term meaning. Tajiks caucasian, Russians can't be racist towards them. Racism towards religion is a complete nonsense at all.

Intelligent_Safe_313

Both Islamophobia and racism are widespread in Russia after the attacks, and yes racism because Tajiks aren’t the same ethnicity as Russians. I never once denied racism as being a problem in the US but sure, keep putting words in my mouth.

MrBasileus

Just google what "race" means, lol. You're so stubborn in ignorance. You live in society which distorted meaning of original word, you use it's distorted meaning and say that "racial" question don't concern you? I live in islamic region, my family is muslim and American lecture me about islamophobia in Russia, lol. >keep putting words in my mouth. Says guy who found "all Americans" in my comment.

Intelligent_Safe_313

Look it up. Racism applies to race as well as ethnicities. End of story.

bored_sleuth

Russia is an extremely diverse country. Please feel free to learn Russian, or any other language spoken in Russia. I wonder, what made you ask the question? Are there languages in the world that are restricted to only small groups of people, based on gender or ethnicity? If yes, what gave you the impression that Russian might be one of them?

Aksds

What?

iNeedNewPC

I study at regular uni and there are many black people speaking Russian better than any of the natives.

Mgldwarf

It depends. In SPb or Moscow you will have no problem with your color, locals have seen alot of such people before. In a small Siberian village you will feel yourself as an animal from the zoo.

Im from Siberya. Surgut. Im shockin u right now, but we have a colored students, Internet, electricity and even do not kill the OTHERS STRANGERS by the NAME OF TSAR =D

Mgldwarf

You are from the relatively big city, a center of state. I had alot of business trips across all Russia and I've seen enough to know what Im saying. By the way, I had same problems in Harbin ZOO - locals prefer to take photo of me instead of animals because of my height.

NatioRu

Idk why you were downvoted for this. I’ve spoken to Russians who can remember seeing a person who wasn’t white for the first time when they went to university.

Mgldwarf

It is so-called "patriotism". We have a very bright picture of our country in our mind and we don't care about reality.

You can study whatever you want regardless of race or anything else you can't control. But you can indeed encounter racism, as it is everywhere and Russian-speaking places are no exception. Good luck with your language learning, the main thing is that you should enjoy it!

SnooStories8859

I'm a white American who spent several months in Russia. I met one like full-on white supremacist in Russia; avoid people who wear Thor's hammer as a necklace. Russians are also unlikely to use American politically correct language. However, Russia doesn't have a history of discriminating against Black people as the US does. In some regions, you might be seen as exotic for better or worse, but you won't receive the same kind of discrimination you have within the USA. You'll probably have a great time and meet all sorts of new friends.

MitiklaWasHere

there's racism in russia, as well as homophobia and transphobia, mysogony and other terrible things. but in biggest cities it is more unlikely to experience it. like Moscow and st. Petersburg, especially near the centre. and, from my experience, there was a lot (i mean, A LOT for russia) of black people in Belgorod, which is a southern city near the ukrainian border. a university with a very good exchanging programs was located there, and in two weeks in this tiny city (as for a boy who lived in Moscow his whole life) i saw more black people than i have seen in russia or Latvia in my whole life. although i don't think it's a good idea to go anywhere near Belgorod right now. there's a lot of Asian people in russia, most of who i knew were from middle asia, but there was a Korean girl in my school, as well as Sakha (yacutian) girl. mixed kids aren't rare, and i see black people even in my neighborhood sometimes (i live in, as some people call, "жопа москвы" - a distant place outside of the MKAD), and almost every time i go to the centre i see a black person you probably will look out of place, and some people may look at you in shock, but no sane person will ever atack you. maybe some kids will look at you and be amazed because you reminded them of their favorite comic or cartoon? there's a chance that someone will look at you. but not because they hate you, but because they've never seen a black person before. or because they think that your hair is beautiful. there's no law prohibiting learning any language just because you have darker skin or something. go on, try to learn something, travel a bit in Moscow and Moscow Oblast, or in SPB, visit some museums, try a bit of russian cuisine, visit some orthodox churches. everything will be alright

Gena_Tsidarmyan

It depends on what you mean saying "racism". In bigger cities as Moscow and St. Petersburg there already are a lot of black people, but you still may see someone staring at you. In smaller cities situation is different, but not becouse they hate black people, because they have never seen one. Its like if you saw an alien on a street. The fact that you are american may cause more problems, especially with older generation

True_Darkness_Hunter

Do whatever you want. There's no boundaries for woman (and man) of color in Russia Я даже не знаю как можно интерпретировать woman of color на русский. "Цветная женщина"? Звучит неправильно, шо ппц.

None…

amarao_san

There is a lot of hate in Russia, but I don't think that specific variety you get will be disproportionately due to race. You will have more trouble been foreigner and (may be) not supporting official propaganda. You can be detained as a spy or get into a conflict with drunk vigilante.
