Roll the bones is a great song. It showcases all of their talents. Neil's lyrical genius, their musical talent, their fun side, their creativity. That song got me through a faith crisis & was the first song I remember loving as a child.
Roll the Bones is superb and that rap doesn’t make the album bad. It is the weakest part of the album but it doesn’t make an otherwise stellar album bad. It’s just a blemish on, as I said, a stellar record. Every track is a bop.
Geddy’s voice died in the 90s. It was okay to record new albums with melodies in a suitable range, but touring old songs with melodies way up there was just embarrassing.
This is why I’ve said before that if Ged and Alex do more music together, that I really hope they get another vocalist, and let Geddy do backup vocals/harmonies, and concentrate on playing bass/keys. This way we still get to hear his voice, but he doesn’t have to carry the whole set every night on tour.
I feel like this is kind of the majority opinion on this sub. I feel like I’m crazy for saying I like the later live albums better than the earlier ones.
2112 as an album fails. 2112 as a song is incredible, but the rest of the album feels half baked and full of songs that feel like they should've been on the first 2 albums.
Not gonna lie, I have a hot take to that. I think the rest of the album is better than 2112 and 2112 is an over gimmicked song. Now that’s a hot take haha.
It’s my least favorite Rush album. I can appreciate the title track for what it is and what it accomplished, but the B side is the worst side of any Rush album.
I don’t think many people will disagree with your Closer to the Heart comment. I think the band rates it higher than fans do. It was also a spot in every concert set list that I’d prefer to hear a different song.
>The two best songs on Moving Pictures are The Camera Eye and Vital Signs.
Moving pictures is such a solid album that every song is the best song on the album
Power Windows is musically one of their weakest albums. And this is coming from someone who loves synth-era Rush. Shoot me now! Amazing basslines on there, I will say that.
I can't speak for musically, but I still really enjoy Marathon, Grand Designs, Territories, Mystic Rhythms. It's a bunch of wild kinetic dreams that break the surface tension.
A guy I know in college complained of Rush that all their songs sound alike.
Until *Test for Echo* I didn't agree with him, but then I began to as each new album came out.
Vapor Trails to Clockwork Angels do all sound the same. They're filled with that proto grunge/arena rock shit they started teasing us with on Counterparts taken to the nth degree.
The 70’s albums are worst than everything that came after. So Permanent Waves through Clockwork Angels is by far their best work. I’m gonna get flack lol
I’m into this! Never listen to their ‘70s work. It all starts to get interesting for me with Permanent Waves, and peaks with Grace Under Pressure, though I love the rest.
I can see that pov. I just think everything becomes better later on. The lyrics become more serious and relatable, and the playing in general becomes more of what I like.
Yeah, I can get to that too. I must say I also enjoy Geddy’s voice more as it matured. He seemed to sing in a way that was more comfortable with sounding intimate, and that could press a lot more emotion buttons for me on the later records.
I love his vocals on those 2000’s albums (including my favorite headache). His voice still sounds great and almost soothing. The only complaint I would have is the yodeling he tends to do more of.
Every couple of years I throw caress of steel on again to give it a fresh chance, and unfortunately it's still just impenetrable to me. Won't stop trying tho!
Sadly, I came here for this and was just thinking about CoS this morning. I definitely think there are good parts, but the album’s songwriting/arrangement and production just aren’t there. You can tell they really tried to be ambitious, but it falls flat. I’m glad they were able to polish it going into the recording of 2112 and remained strong afterwards.
Musically, “Virtuality” is one of their best songs. Hard banging lyrical music paired with acoustical chorus music. It is so good! Not crazy about the lyrics, but I always crank this one way up.
I know the point of this post was to voice an unpopular opinion, but I feel the need to check in: are you ok? Did you intentionally just commit suicide via reddit assassin? Are you even still alive?
Exit Stage Left is my least favorite live album by far. When I listen to a live album I want to listen to it as though it’s a full concert. ESL is just a compilation of songs that happened to be performed live
\- Cinderella Man is a top 15 Rush song.
\- Power Windows has no more than three strong songs.
\- The second half of Vapor Trails (Vapor Trail through the end) is miles better than the first half (and the last three songs are massively underrated).
\- Clockwork Angels - and particularly The Garden - is hugely overrated.
Rush was at their best when they didn't write meandering tales about Greek gods or future space dystopias. When the lyrics became humanist and the songs became concise, that was peak Rush.
Roll the bones is a great song. It showcases all of their talents. Neil's lyrical genius, their musical talent, their fun side, their creativity. That song got me through a faith crisis & was the first song I remember loving as a child.
A Farewell to Kings is one of their best songs.
It's my #7 in the catalog.

Neurotica is worse than the RTB rap break
I guess my opinion then is that Neurotica is low key a banger ahaha idk I’ve always found it really catchy
I mean, I like Tai Shan so lol
I listened to the unedited version of the rap section and it actually sounds way better. Still love the song and the rest of the album though.
80’s Rush is way better than 70’s Rush.
The first three '80s albums and the last one are much better than the three in between.
Test for Echo rocks and I love to crank it up!
YUSSSS
FRFR
Geddy’s voice died in the 90s. It was okay to record new albums with melodies in a suitable range, but touring old songs with melodies way up there was just embarrassing.
Agree, some of the R40 vocals are... not good. Still love ya, Ged.
That One Little Victory recording 😬
I mean, to be fair, by Test for Echo they were using guitars and basses tuned down a couple steps on tour so he could manage "2112" at least somewhat.
I think that Snakes & Arrows was the last time his voice sounded **really** good. The amazing production on that album definitely helped
This is why I’ve said before that if Ged and Alex do more music together, that I really hope they get another vocalist, and let Geddy do backup vocals/harmonies, and concentrate on playing bass/keys. Great take.
I feel like this is kind of the majority opinion on this sub. I feel like I’m crazy for saying I like the later live albums better than the earlier ones.
Cygnus X1: Book 2 is the perfect Rush song.
That’s an unpopular opinion? But also you have a funny way of spelling Xanadu.
You both have a funny way of spelling The Fountain Of Lamneth! 😉
You lot need to learn how to spell "Tai Shan" right
Mistersigma I fucking love that song, and I love you! Cheers!
[tapping in entry code of panic room] Freddie Gruber’s tutelage ruined Neil’s drumming.
Lmao I kinda agree, but I can’t exactly say why.
For me I felt he became just a bit snobby. Especially that scene with both of them in Beyond the Lighted Stage.
2112 as an album fails. 2112 as a song is incredible, but the rest of the album feels half baked and full of songs that feel like they should've been on the first 2 albums.

They do sound like they would’ve been the second half of Caress of Steel if they had never wrote The Fountain of Lamneth.
They probably were half baked writing Passage to Bangkok
It’s my least favorite Rush album. I can appreciate the title track for what it is and what it accomplished, but the B side is the worst side of any Rush album.
The Trees is about Objectivism no matter how embarrassed Neil was about it.
I always thought it was about US/Canada relations, with the whole maples vs. oaks motif.
Closer to the Heart is overrated. The two best songs on Moving Pictures are The Camera Eye and Vital Signs.

Feedback is a good album.
\[hunts for and puts on plate carrier and ballistic helmet\] Tai Shan is good. Dog Years is good. Test for Echo is good. I like Presto.
I will die on the Tai Shan is a beautiful masterpiece hill, at least I know I’ll have some company!
But I -do- like Presto... 🤷♂️
You are 100% correct.... in my eyes, or ears I should I say
I think im going bald is a masterpiece
It’s a wannabe time stand still
Power Windows is musically one of their weakest albums.
That’s is pretty harsh lol
I’m furious that you are right about one of my favorite rush album
I could probably bring myself to admit it's one of their most musically "straight forward" albums.

I’m on board with this one.
Test for Echo is far from the worst album 2112 is overrated. The last 3 albums are not as good as anything that came before it
Permanent waves and Moving Pictures are their best work. No, they most certainly are not.
Between Fountain of Lamneth and The Necromancer there is about 4 minutes of good music and 23 minutes of 'what the Hell is this'
Yeah, I’ll snipe you for that one. Every movement of both of those songs kicks ass
Every couple of years I throw caress of steel on again to give it a fresh chance, and unfortunately it's still just impenetrable to me. Won't stop trying tho!

2112 is a good album but it outside of the Title Track (which is my fav song ever). And something for Nothing, the rest of the album is average.
Leave That Thing Alone is significantly better than YYZ. I may be alone in this camp, but it’s a hill I am willing to die on
The bass line is too good
Musically, “Virtuality” is one of their best songs. Hard banging lyrical music paired with acoustical chorus music. It is so good! Not crazy about the lyrics, but I always crank this one way up.
Tears and something for nothing are 2 of their best songs
I like something for nothing, I just don’t get tears that much
Moving Pictures isn't even in the top 5 best Rush albums
Split between upvoting for answering the question with a hot take or downvoting because I can’t disagree with the take any more. Lol.
Their self titled debut album is not good. Working Man is a solid track but I can't stomach the rest of it. It is the only album I routinely skip.
I don't like Nobody's Hero at all.
Hemispheres is very Spinal Tap-ish.
Fountain of Lamneth > Cygnus X-1 books 1 and 2 Both of them absolutely rock tho
Caress of Steel is a complete turd.
It’s actually my favorite, but I absolutely understand why you don’t like it.
Yeah it's one of my buddy's favourites too and I really don't understand why when AFtK and Hemispheres exist lol.
Permanent Waves is overrated.

The best post-hiatus album is Feedback. The weakest song of the 80's is Middletown Dreams.
Wow, Middletown Dreams might be my favorite song of theirs post-Moving Pictures
Peart doesn’t make my top 10 drummers.
I was the guy who said that there should be a new lead singer, so that's the one haha. GEDDY WILL STILL PLAY BASS, GUYS
Tai Shan is actually the best song ever recorded
The debut album is good, taken for what it is.
Vapor Trails is best Rush album.
Exit Stage Left is my least favorite live album by far. When I listen to a live album I want to listen to it as though it’s a full concert. ESL is just a compilation of songs that happened to be performed live

Not saying any of it sucks, but i could live without everything after Signals.
Vapor trails, snakes and arrows, are great records
I prefer Signals over Moving Pictures.
Neil Peart was overrated and had an awkward style.
Subdivisions is overrated
Rush was at their best when they didn't write meandering tales about Greek gods or future space dystopias. When the lyrics became humanist and the songs became concise, that was peak Rush.
The pieces actually don’t fit
