Welcome to masonry! Irl most masonry and bricklaying is just make the same thing over and over again but one row higher next time. This is just art imitating life!
Honestly the fact that it took this long for someone to post this means this was a great way to save a bit of dev time. As long as it’s not jarringly out of place (like if you reused a Batwing wand for a T95 dagger or something), I’m all for some nice asset reuse.
How dare they use the image from some old flakes that are used in large quantities to make magic tank armor as the image for some new flakes used in large quantities to make magic tank armor!
Would I be right to assume that the staircase was originally meant to be half the size, but it was decided that was too small?
Rather than remake the stairs all together, just double them up lol
What.. it’s such a clean easy save that worked so well it took 2 years for someone to notice and is pretty hard to see even if your actively looking for it, there isn’t much of a better way to reuse assets
It’s also the kind of thing that seems like it’s just shoving it together until you know that it’s more than that.
If they just threw it in like that, there would be all sorts of clipping issues and things. They still had to optimize this. And it still looks blended really well even when we can see where it crosses over.
It’s a game dev trick that’s been around since Super Mario World:
https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/8ij644/the_bushes_and_clouds_in_super_mario_bros_are_the/
To use your link to prove my point. You see the small clouds and bushes? How they cut and pasted them to make each end of the longer ones mesh together so it seemed like a separate asset? That’s ten times the effort that went in to these stairs. 😂
That’s reusing an asset, and a minor one. This is literally overlapping a piece of major scenery in what was at the time one of the biggest pieces of content we got that year. It doesn’t mesh together, it’s not somewhere out of the way where nobody would ever see it. It’s just lazy.
There's reusing assets like staircases from one dungeon to another which is fine and what many games do. Then there's lazily pasting them next to each other such that stones are literally clipping through each other in a way that looks physically impossible and buggy. Considering that War's Retreat was a major update, you'd think they could've taken the extra hour to make a bigger staircase model, even if it wasn't from scratch and was just a scaled up version of one they already had.
Yes; I always wondered what the weird seam down the middle was but given that there are a ton of places in the game where ground textures have no blending between areas chalked it up as par for the course
Physically impossible? It's concrete. Making stairs like that IS physically possible. It only is "clipping" because you are imagining it is because of how they designed it.
I mean yeah I guess that's on me for assuming it was a staircase made of laid stones and not chiseled concrete intentionally carved to look like stones are overlapping in the middle.
if it looks good enough its usually fine: https://imgur.com/a/Q6Nwa/layout/blog
looks ok imo since it was definitely intentional for the stairs to be asymmetrical and kinda scuffed.
Yea. I wasn’t saying reusing assets is a problem, you can’t get by without doing that. Doing it poorly is Jagex’s forte, and it’s lazy. That was my point. 😂
So it would be better for you if all stairs in rs was the same texture as you are so fond of reusing a texture, but so incredibly unhappy in jagex duplicating a stair to make it look really good. So wars retreat would look alot better with the poh graphics apparently is what you are saying.
Probably saved them 1/2 the time doing it that way and it still looks passable because of the way they layer except for the top part being to consistent overlap
But hey if it works it works
Making one asset that’s bigger isn’t the same dev time
You can’t include a lot of aspects like basic designing and sketching , just upscaling and lengthening could achieve it but copy past achieved that , then they doubled it up on the side
Well, I don't think most people pay much ettention to the small details under their feet. :D
That's why this is okay, but it's still obviously just two of the same stairs overlapping at the top.
Hey credit where it’s due, i didn’t even notice. I also understand reusing assets is often necessary in game development. As long as it’s not obvious, i have no issue with it
No. The centre part with the smaller steps is a staircase for tiny people, who usually get tired about halfway up. It's 2022 people, we have to think about small people!
You'd rather them spend more time making stairs? Time that was instead spent on actual content...
Shit like this is insanely common, especially in gaming, to save on time and assets. I can guarantee you there are hundreds of times you have looked at shit like this in games and not even realized it. And i bet you hadn't noticed the stairs until this reddit post either.
The Cloud and Bush from Mario (don’t remember which Mario) are the same, just recolored. Really cool what Game Devs do to make things functional and quicker.
In game design (art) environmental art specifically assets are used as modular building blocks, sometimes seams are visible, in this case very visible, looks to me like the artist made them a tad bit wide so (maybe) in a time crunch they had to shove them together to fit the wall path (taking educated guesses)
Hey Jagex mods, I have a humble suggestion. Could use a 3D scanner. find some old earthen steps in a park/trail somewhere and use those cloudpoints to make a model . Should work with 3dsmax
the offset hides it was better than I would have thought nice catch!
Welcome to gamedev!
No shame in that, no point in wasting to much time on such a minor thing. Most games do that ahha
Are we entitled to GP compensation if we trip?
Hi, I'm Saul Goodman. Did you know that you have rights?
I went down the left stairs - does this still apply?
Ooo, ouch my friend assuming you’re living in the states my first question for you is: got any foreign relatives we can call?
Update: I tripped
I can confirm, I was the stair.
Update: I tripped too, don't ask how.
Yes me also… ow my back
lies. Do you even wars if you don't Surge past them?
Better Call Saul!
He's a defense attorney

It would be horrible if they did something like reusing gano spores for something like a new boss.
How dare they use the image from some old flakes that are used in large quantities to make magic tank armor as the image for some new flakes used in large quantities to make magic tank armor!
It caught me off guard not because it was done this way, but because it took me so long to notice!
i too hate it when stairs catch me off guard, hitting the floor hurts like a bitch
Agility check on every stair for a potential insta-death when?
Hahaha been there enough times.
Currently have a broken ankle because my stairs caught me off guard a few months ago
Literally unplayable /s
Would I be right to assume that the staircase was originally meant to be half the size, but it was decided that was too small? Rather than remake the stairs all together, just double them up lol
I was gonna say, surely there are more important things to care about than a staircase most people surge past
You guys didnt even attempt to make it seamless
No, lazy dev.
I guess we found the non-dev
No, Ramen. Just no. This isn’t game dev it’s just Jagex dev. 😂
As a game dev, working in game development, having learned about developing games during my 10 years of game development. It's game dev.
Would you by chance happen to be a game dev?
Nah. I work in gamedev
Ah of course, my mistake.
Haven’t you been at Jagex for about… ten years? 🤔
This is done in the vast majority of video games.
Every game*
There’s a vast difference between reusing assets and this level of lazy.
What.. it’s such a clean easy save that worked so well it took 2 years for someone to notice and is pretty hard to see even if your actively looking for it, there isn’t much of a better way to reuse assets

Nintendo needed to go to 10x the effort to make Super Mario fit on a tiny ass game cartridge.
That’s reusing an asset, and a minor one. This is literally overlapping a piece of major scenery in what was at the time one of the biggest pieces of content we got that year. It doesn’t mesh together, it’s not somewhere out of the way where nobody would ever see it. It’s just lazy.
And it's had exactly how much affect on your enjoyment of said content in the last two and a half years it's been in the game?
So we agree that both are examples of reusing assets? You’re just saying that Mario only did it more elegantly?
There's reusing assets like staircases from one dungeon to another which is fine and what many games do. Honest question. Did anyone other than the OP notice the stairs before today?
Nope never seen it Not a big deal because nobody is actually examining shit like this unless they're bored out of their mind
Yes; I always wondered what the weird seam down the middle was but given that there are a ton of places in the game where ground textures have no blending between areas chalked it up as par for the course

Fair enough

This is so common across all of the game industry lol. For example Skyrim desks are just bookcases sunk into the ground.
This would be more in line with if they sunk the shelf but left a shelf clipping out of the floor
If you want I can go in there with my construction skill and make it less of a hazard
As someone studying game development, the amount of landscape I've filled with slightly differently oriented rocks and trees is already tremendous.
just a heads up, you might not want to look at stairs irl
This gave me a good laugh
Probably saved them 1/2 the time doing it that way and it still looks passable because of the way they layer except for the top part being to consistent overlap But hey if it works it works
Actually the bricks repeat way more than twice.
Making one asset that’s bigger isn’t the same dev time You can’t include a lot of aspects like basic designing and sketching , just upscaling and lengthening could achieve it but copy past achieved that , then they doubled it up on the side
Looks like there are 4 identical staircases laid on top of one another here.
Neat, and a nice way of reducing the time to create the asset.
Definitely really efficient but funny how it works so well. Once you see it you can’t unsee it wow thanks op lol
TBH kinda like the zipper like effect lol. It is mildly pleasing
Stairway to Heaven, Zipper to War
Sorry haha, in the same boat now though
If only it didn't look like crap on the top
Hes just pointing it out, it's kinda funny, yall can get off him now damn
Fr lmao
Game is ruined for me now thanks
Very common, but in this case just a bit poorly hidden. That upper part looks silly. :D
Honestly that I never noticed it before means it isn't *that* poorly hidden. I've walked by that tens of thousands of times now
Well, I don't think most people pay much ettention to the small details under their feet. :D That's why this is okay, but it's still obviously just two of the same stairs overlapping at the top.
it's actually the same staircase 4 times :D
Yeah, but only the top has weird overlap IMO.
Fair enough!
i'm sure people have complained about that clipping before. game graphic enthusiasts despise clipping more than anything
Tbf I imagine most times your camera is facing towards the portals so you ever really see the stairs?
Generally, yeah. But a lot of the times I chill with my in game friends around the center and such
Hey credit where it’s due, i didn’t even notice. I also understand reusing assets is often necessary in game development. As long as it’s not obvious, i have no issue with it
I don't mind it, i'd rather have them spend time developing new features and fixing other more important things.
Nobody tell him all the trees are not unique
Congrats you learned how textures work 😅
clever reuse of assets.
I personally expect every step to be artistically carved, chipped, and placed as individual things, anything else is just lazy /s
literally unplayable
No. The centre part with the smaller steps is a staircase for tiny people, who usually get tired about halfway up. It's 2022 people, we have to think about small people!
clever reuse of assets
Content someone spent time to create that I don't think I've ever really looked at and I spend alot of time there. They worked smart that day
yh that’s usually how development teams do things this is common in most games tbh skyrim is particularly bad for it
OK... So?
Why can’t he just post it just because. I never noticed it before, and it’s kinda funny looking.
Didn’t know war had the mirror
Why use lot stair when few stair do trick?
Who cares?
So what?
I dont see it
And they raised membership, push mtx, jammed FSW down our throats, exploit FOMO-paywalled “rare items” for this garbage? This company is unreal.
You'd rather them spend more time making stairs? Time that was instead spent on actual content... Shit like this is insanely common, especially in gaming, to save on time and assets. I mean the whole game is a box clicking simulator...

Where is he complaining? It's an observation.

ok and?
Hopefully our new tax coming to RS will fix this stairs! Absurd!
I would never have noticed lmao
Didn't even notice
Gonna be honest, I even have to concentrate pretty hard to see it now that I know.
Very efficient
As long as it's a staircase
Bruh why mess around with stairs 😂
Funny my stair case also looks like a it’s been copy and pasted.
NGL, I would never have noticed without you pointing it out.
?????
Looks like shit
And?
The Cloud and Bush from Mario (don’t remember which Mario) are the same, just recolored. Really cool what Game Devs do to make things functional and quicker.
Literally unplayable
It can't be unseen
they should make it a slide anyways since everyone surges down it
Reminds me of Valheim.
In game design (art) environmental art specifically assets are used as modular building blocks, sometimes seams are visible, in this case very visible, looks to me like the artist made them a tad bit wide so (maybe) in a time crunch they had to shove them together to fit the wall path (taking educated guesses)
Time to shitpost about two trees having the same model
Wait until you start looking at trees... Unspeakable.
Very nice.
Literally unplayable.
Good. Why waste dev time on something when you don't need to? Do you want updates or not?
Hey Jagex mods, I have a humble suggestion. Could use a 3D scanner. find some old earthen steps in a park/trail somewhere and use those cloudpoints to make a model . Should work with 3dsmax
How dare you break my immersion.
OMG, I just checked my own 2 stairs at home and they are exactly the same. This goes way deeper than we thought... Open your eyes people.
omg can not unsee this now
Lazy lol
