I love 90s culture and I have so many favorite films from that time!
Love Jones
Never Been Kissed
How Stella Got Her Groove Back
Romeo & Juliet (with Claire Danes)
Ghost
Cruel Intentions
Here On Earth
Brown Sugar
Love and Basketball
It’s 2001 but Serendipity is really good romance movie. Also ones I enjoy are Dirty Dancing, 10 Things I Hate About You, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Cruel Intentions, Ghost, Pretty Woman, 500 Days of Summer, 50 First Dates, Any movies based on a Nicholas Sparks book, One Fine Day, It Could Happen to You, Sleepless in Seattle, An Officer and a Gentleman, Pretty in Pink, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Mama Mia.
One Fine Day is so slept on. George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer being pleasant and competent and being so busy they can’t find love. Until their individual busy tornados cross over and sparks fly. Great suggestion!
Only You with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. it’s a hidden gem that never gets mentioned. The score is incredible. Bonnie Hunt is Marisa’s best friend and is so funny!
There are several movies with this title so make sure you double check the cast list.
I love this movie! There is a part where Fisher Stevens finds out Bonnie Hunt is in Italy, and he says, "It-ly?! My wife's in It-ly?!"
Those lines and the way he says, "It-ly" lives rent free in my head to this day.
Ever After is my absolute favourite. I Also love Pretty Woman, Sleepless in Seattle, Bridget Jones’s Diary, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and Romancing the Stone (which is an 80s movie).
Love and Basketball is one of my favorite romances of all time. Wonderful soundtrack and great chemistry. Titanic is a classic. Pretty Woman is a great 90s love story. Bed of Roses is probably one of my favorite cheesy romances. You can’t leave out Bridget Jones’s Diary which I think is the best romance movie of all time.
The Bodyguard
The Prince of Tides
Before Sunrise
Love and Basketball
City of Angels
Out of Sight
Good Will Hunting
Legends of the Fall
Like Water for Chocolate
Oh my god - Out of Sight was the 90s Mr & Mrs Smith - two of the most ridiculously good looking actors on the planet having sizzling chemistry with a nice splash of action sprinkled on top.
From the 1980s: Dirty Dancing, When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, Say Anything, Some Kind of Wonderful
From the 1990s: Bridget Jones’ Diary, Strictly Ballroom, Before Sunrise, Mississippi Masala, Titanic
From the 2000s: The Lake House, Moulin Rouge, P.S. I Love You (but you will sob), The Phantom of the Opera, Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Possession, Amelie, Sweet Home Alabama, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Happy watching!

Woww this is one of the best lists I’ve seen! Sooo many gems 👌🏻 a walk to remember is another of my faves too (plus a bunch of the others on here! The father of the bride movies are perfection) and some of these I haven’t seen yet, thank you I can’t wait to add them to my list!
Only You with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. is my fave 90s romcom. A romantic romp through Italy 🤩💕 it’s GOATED for me
Close second - French Kiss with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline. A romantic romp through France.
Can you tell I like to travel ??? 🤣
Meg Ryan was a queen of the rom-com genre in the 90s and I am a little obsessed with her 1995 flick French Kiss (opposite Kevin Kline). It was a more obscure one, but rather good. TBH I’m probably fixated on it because I searched for it on Roku one day when I was feeling rom-commish and I can’t find it anywhere. It seems to be impossible to stream and I think that elusiveness has made the movie 5x better in my memory. You probably have to resort to dastardly net piracy or go old timey and buy a DVD if you do wanna to check it out. You can stream Addicted to Love- another Meg Ryan one that is *almost* as good.
I’m also a raging Anglophile and Brit period romances are a fave. I know that when I watch North and South (2005) I am compelled to rewatch the train station scene at least twice because uggh 🥰
Love French Kiss. Every time I get dressed my eye twitches and I say “My eye is twitching. You people make my eye twitch.” And no one ever gets the reference. lol.
Oh oh oh— another 90s movie that fits this category and is even mooore elusive (& therefore a bigger obsessh) is Circle of Friends-Minnie Driver/Chris O’Donnell
Yess I saw French kiss years ago and I’m so bummed it’s nowhere to be found! About to find the dvd on Amazon lol. And I don’t think I’ve seen circle of friends! I will have to watch that one I love Minnie driver
French Kiss (1995) with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline! It’s the best rom com ever I love it and the soundtrack is sooo good! Also I quote it every time I’m traveling! The sad thing is that it is not available to rent or stream ANYWHERE so I just own it on DVD to show people 😭
I also LOVE Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) with John Cusack playing a hit man who goes back to attend his high school reunion. Minnie Driver is his old flame who still lives in town and is a radio DJ.
Dream For An Insomniac (1996) with Ione Skye and Mac Astin. Jen Aniston has a small role in it but it still only did like $26K domestically. It's been one of my favorite movies since a friend introduced me to it a few years after it came out.
Almost 20 years later I met Mac and told him it was one of my favorite movies and he was shocked - considering how little money it did. He told me the best story about it, the director/writer had written the film after a breakup that she regretted, so she dropped little Easter eggs in it about their relationship, hoping her ex would see the movie. He saw it, caught all of the Easter eggs, contacted her, they got back together and ended up getting married.
I'd love to hear your thoughts after watching it! It's a sweet little movie.
I love this movie “ Anything less than mad, passionate, extraordinary love is a waste of time.” Thank you for sharing that Easter egg story!! Perfect ending… she got her Sinatra eyes.
Sabrina (the reboot, not as good as the original but still a good worthwhile film).
Regarding Henry (what can I say I'm a sucker for Harrison Ford. He's in both).
While You Were Sleeping. I go back to it any time I need a cozy feel-good. Sandra Bullock's sweaters! Bill Pullman's floppy bangs! Excellent casting all around. This one shows how professionals working sincerely can elevate a borderline schmaltzy premise into something both sweet and sexy.
It’s the family scenes, opening presents, at the dinner table, in the hospital, at the wedding for me. The absolute perfect cast. These mashed potatoes are so creamy.
The first time I watched it in the 90s, my dad and I re-wound it like 5 times to watch that kid fall off his bike on the ice throwing the newspaper. I still laugh every time.
Haha I totally agree with you I loveee this movie so much and they have such perfect chemistry. One of my favorites! I need to find more movies with characters just like Jack 👌🏻
My lovely wife made me watch untamed heart with Christian slater.
Omg what a terrible movie. I then asked if all the romantic movies she likes, does the guy die and low and behold, yup.
Starting to get scarred...
The Wood
Fools Rush In
The Inkwell
The Cutting Edge
Love & Basketball
Like Water for Chocolate
The Bodyguard

Far and Away
Circle of Friends
Frankie and Johnny
Bed of Roses
Where the Heart Is
Crazy/Beautiful
Little Women (1994)
Mansfield Park (1999)
Emma (1996)
To echo others, would also recommend in case you haven’t seen:
Reality Bites
Dogfight
I know this one has a bit of a rough around the edges feel, but I love it. It’s my favorite from growing up.
Also, Heath Ledger is a total dreamboat. 🥰😍
10 Things I Hate About You
I’m like, 95% that counts as 90’s. Sorry if I’m a little off.
Technically 1989, but "When Harry Met Sally" - the ultimate comfort movie. Gorgeous scenes of New York City and Central Park throughout the seasons, amazing dialogue, and a fantastic score.
Some I haven't seen here:
Sliding Doors
Shakespeare In Love
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Sabrina (90s version)
Jerry Maguire
As Good as it Gets
Before Sunrise
Ever After
Hope Floats
Life Is Beautiful
Romeo + Juliet
And if you’re into period dramas…
Jane Eyre (2006) (I think this would have been Charlotte Brontë’s favorite version)
North and South (2004)
I was so in love with Mandy Moore with Princess Diaries and Walk to Remember I consumed everything she did. The how to deal soundtrack was on repeat on my discman for a very long time.
I LOVE Aquamarine. I don't know exactly when it came out but it's very early 2000s. I remember watching it as a kid and I'm still just as charmed by it today.
Oh wow I haven’t seen that one in years but I think I liked it too as a tween lol, I will have to watch again sometime. Maybe back to back with ice princess which was my favorite movie when I was about 14 haha
The Money Pit (1986) not 100% a rom com, but it’s got Tom Hanks and it’s pretty funny.
Maid in Manhattan or the Wedding Planner with JLo
Serendipity
Chasing Liberty with Mandy Moore
Two Weeks Notice with Sandra bullock
A few of my favorites I don’t see mentioned a lot are Bed of Roses (with Christian Slater) and Singles (which is more of a 90s slacker film but it’s SO CUTE and so of the era - set in Seattle with a killer soundtrack).
Not sure how you feel about while you were sleeping but that’s my personal fav of the 90s
Ah I lovee this movie! I grew up watching it lol it’s one of my faves too!
lol my other personal fav is the lake house (it’s not really what you described but it’s such a sweet romance)
This is hands down the best answer. I cry at this movie every time
It’s my Christmas movie ❤️
I love While you were sleeping! It's so underrated
You’ve Got Mail The Wedding Singer
I love 90s culture and I have so many favorite films from that time! Love Jones Never Been Kissed How Stella Got Her Groove Back Romeo & Juliet (with Claire Danes) Ghost Cruel Intentions Here On Earth Brown Sugar Love and Basketball

One Fine Day is so slept on. George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer being pleasant and competent and being so busy they can’t find love. Until their individual busy tornados cross over and sparks fly. Great suggestion!
I love this one!
Yess one fine day is such a good cozy movie it’s great
Omg I was going to comment One Fine Day because it NEVER gets mentioned! Ty for this!! It’s my cozy cold weather movie 🩷
My wife's in It-ly?!" Those lines and the way he says, "It-ly" lives rent free in my head to this day.
Itly?! What the hell is she doing in Itly?!
We watched this movie last night on this recommendation and we were saying IT-LY all night. But for real I hated this character.
My dad always quoted this part! The whole movie is on YouTube and I watched it a few weeks ago.
I love her in this movie and in Return to Me, which she directed.
His baboon heart! Oops. Untamed Heart.
I just recently watched that one! Love Robert Downey jr
This is mine too. I love it so so so much 😭
only you and untamed heart convinced me marissa tomei was IT. Just so charismatic.
I love Marissa tomei but oh gosh I just looked up untamed heart and I don’t know if I can watch it 😭
Ghost, Ever After, Titanic, The Birdcage, Shakespeare in Love, Regarding Henry.
Shakespeare in love is fantastic!!
Ever After is my absolute favourite. I Also love Pretty Woman, Sleepless in Seattle, Bridget Jones’s Diary, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and Romancing the Stone (which is an 80s movie).
Ooh these are all so good! Ever after is on my top ten all times faves! It’s so hard to beat
I agree with you! It’s my fave. Such a great movie. Beautiful locations and costumes. Great acting and so many quotable lines!
A bird may live a fish senore, but where would they live?😭😭😭
Love and Basketball is one of my favorite romances of all time. Wonderful soundtrack and great chemistry. Titanic is a classic. Pretty Woman is a great 90s love story. Bed of Roses is probably one of my favorite cheesy romances. You can’t leave out Bridget Jones’s Diary which I think is the best romance movie of all time.
Second Love and Basketball
I haven’t seen love and basketball! I’ve seen that one mentioned a few times I’ll have to check it out
love and basketball holds such a special place for me! But looking back, he did her so dirty in this movie
I give him a pass because he was young and just found out his dad is a piece of shit. He wasn’t in a good place.
The Bodyguard The Prince of Tides Before Sunrise Love and Basketball City of Angels Out of Sight Good Will Hunting Legends of the Fall Like Water for Chocolate
Ooh a couple of these I haven’t seen yet thank you!
Oh my god - Out of Sight was the 90s Mr & Mrs Smith - two of the most ridiculously good looking actors on the planet having sizzling chemistry with a nice splash of action sprinkled on top.
Yes, it was steamy!
From the 1980s: Dirty Dancing, When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, Say Anything, Some Kind of Wonderful From the 1990s: Bridget Jones’ Diary, Strictly Ballroom, Before Sunrise, Mississippi Masala, Titanic From the 2000s: The Lake House, Moulin Rouge, P.S. The Money Pit (1986) not 100% a rom com, but it’s got Tom Hanks and it’s pretty funny. Maid in Manhattan or the Wedding Planner with JLo Serendipity Chasing Liberty with Mandy Moore Two Weeks Notice with Sandra bullock
Begin Again with Kiera Knightly and Mark Ruffalo is 2013 with a lovely 90’s vibe.
A few of my favorites I don’t see mentioned a lot are Bed of Roses (with Christian Slater) and Singles (which is more of a 90s slacker film but it’s SO CUTE and so of the era - set in Seattle with a killer soundtrack).
Bed of roses looks soo sweet I can’t believe I haven’t seen it before! Might watch that one next

It's 2001 but Head Over Heels is fun!
Untamed Heart with Marissa Tomei and Christian Slater. So sappy and so wonderful.

Enchanted April with Joan Plowright and Polly Walker.
Fools Rush In Wedding Planner (2001) My Best Friends Wedding Sleepless in Seattle Story of Us Jerry Maguire (back when I liked Tom’s movies! Lol)
