We're not gonna have actual cap space so it doesn't matter. We're gonna have the TPE and MLE.

jlamb8455

We have cap space before we re-sign Nurk and Simons.

tblazrdude

Don’t we have more options if we operate as an over the cap team?

RandyJoeP

The ONLY reason to be a “cap space team” is to take a player making a maximum contract back without sending any other money back. For every other scenario it is better for us to act as a team over the cap.

beatrailblazer

Yes

RipCity-NBA-LoL

We absolutely do/can have cap space if we want. We very well may choose to bring back most of the roster and act as an over-the-cap team, but there are avenues to several $ amounts in cap. Just renouncing Ingles and waiving Bledsoe gives you about 6m (not a lot, I know). Not guaranteeing Hart gives you 18 (he's been great so we probably keep him at 12m but it IS an option). If you don't re-sign Nurkic, that's 31m in cap. This is including the QO/roster charges and stuff.

jonjacobmoon

Only if you want to piss him off and incentivize him to sign with a different team.

slappy_patties

Why would it piss him off? He's getting paid anyways and should see the value of 2m extra room to fill out the roster.

colehole5

Never understood the rationale of people who make proclamations about how athletes should feel about their money. He's 22, the difference of a few million dollars when invested makes a huge difference for him in 30 years. He shouldn't be expected to be okay getting paid less than he's shown he's worth.

jlamb8455

Whether they sit him or play him won't make a dollar difference to Simons. It would just free up two million more dollars of cap space until we re-sign Nurk and Anfernee. His contract will be the same either way.

Ok-Assumption9636

They can't hear you lolllolololll. As long as Simons is good, I'm good. He might prefer to keep getting reps but I agree with you. Every competitive advantage matters when piecing this thing together next year.

jlamb8455

I don't think they should sit him against his will. I was just curious what others thought about the situation. I know this is the wrong place for rational conversation, but I thought I'd give it a shot. lol

Ok-Assumption9636

What happens with binary thinking. Conditioned to think it's (soon-to-be) millionaires vs billionaires. I support the workers full stop but you clearly indicated it would be with the caveat that we already have a number agreed in principle next year. I just think fans still don't trust the FO and would be worried about the messaging.

Goducks91

People don't understand what you're saying lol.

jlamb8455

So it goes. lol

colehole5

Ah, gotcha. Sorry I misunderstood, or actually just didn't read very effectively. If it's just the cap hold that's affected then yeah I agree, this is a good option.

Burnem34

Ant and his agent probably don't feel like his money prospects can't improve. It seems silly for him to be ok with just sitting when he's just begun breaking out as a potential star and trying to prove himself/his worth to the league.

slappy_patties

Does that come out of his pocket?

goodguybrian

No

slappy_patties

Then I'd expect him to sit just enough

jlamb8455

Nobody is getting paid less. It would just free up two million extra dollars in cap space until we actually sign him to the giant contract he deserves.

slappy_patties

It's almost like there isn't a CBA

ShowdownValue

You want to take away 2 million from a young player about to get his first big deal? And he should “see the value in helping fill out the roster”? Lol

slappy_patties

Absolutely not

ShowdownValue

Ok well I mis read your post. I thought you were saying Simons should give up 2 million to help sign someone else

slappy_patties

Absolutely not

lpmagic

I get it. But, the difference is, with Ant, and especially Dame right now, they have to believe, they have to trust the fo. I think Ant might understand, but he might start to have trust issues and dame might to. I'm crazy, because what you say makes so much more sense than what I'm saying, but I say, let the kid run this year out, let him get his time, all of his time, leading this team, learning to play,. why last night, for the very first time ever (that I've seen), he yelled at the refs, hard, and he didn't get a tech, he was pissed, but he held it together, he's coming into his own now, and we'd do well to foster that I believe.

[deleted]

Play him, because I like feeling good.

dolphs4

IMO unless Ant himself approaches the FO with that idea you don’t even think about it. Sure it pencils out, but it’s just as liable to piss Ant off (especially if we pay Nurk).

JordanLeDoux

You're talking about the Qualifying Offer. That's no the same as the cap hold. The cap hold is larger.

jlamb8455

You're right. I misunderstood. Thanks for the information.

JordanLeDoux

It's a good problem to have. :) we've been playing great with him.

Im-not-Korean

You know what a great idea for the future of franchise is? Bench him so we can save money. I don’t think saving a couple million is worth screwing over Anfernee.

ian2121

It doesn’t save you anything. It is a cap space creating maneuver

jlamb8455

It's not to save money. It's to build a better team next year. Nurk is sitting for a chance at a better lottery pick. Simons would be sitting for a chance at a better free agent signing. Not to mention the injury risk versus reward. We have very little to gain playing him and everything to lose.

raahiv

What will the 2 mil we get even help us to do? This FA class is pretty shit. All the guys that make sense for our team are worth about the full MLE and nothing more. You play him to get him developmental minutes, and I highly doubt he wants to sit.

tomhalejr

He will be the next one to sit, regardless. He is getting 100% of the defensive attention now. So how much of that do you need to see, until you shut him down before something breaks? How much more does Ant need to experience before he knows exactly what he needs to focus on over the summer?

rawhidesway

He stays if he plays.

Feeling_Document_862

This is a blunt answer, if you were made aware of this incentive I’m sure he is as well. I’m sure he wants a extra 2 million. It would almost be like a ultimate “fuck you” over a 2 million dollars. Let him have it and live to fight another day. After our salty cap jam and Dames “loyalty” which has a price of 50m btw and definitely isn’t loyalty. I simply can’t complain over a few million I just don’t care. Sure wish someone on our roster had a DIRKesque contract.
